Through the lens of political poetry this collection focuses in on what is behind the structures that form modern society.
By dissecting ideas around what constitutes a 'good life', barriers such as patriarchy, unsustainable economic ideologies, climate change etc, begin to become more visible. As they highlighted the glaring realities of inequality reveal themselves in stark contrast to the billboard facade that promised us freedom and democracy.
Poetry, could appear to be an easy write. After all what is difficult about listing a few meaningful words together? "I can write a shopping list, so poetry is going to be a doddle," says the potential poet. The story teller can hide behind their story; a bad writer can get away with it if the story is great. But a poem? It has to speak volumes in usually less words than a short story, sometimes only a few lines. It has to have rhythm, music. The poet's language has to be broad so that there little repetition. The poet has to be seen to be in control. Camille Barr with her collection 'Behind The Facade' succeeds on all these counts. I've had the collection a short few days and read and re-read. Poets would appreciate this work, non poets could learn how to appreciate poetry from this work. Recommended. If you are in France, Europe in June 2018, Camille, let me know.
Starting from the beginning, when Ms. Barr introduces herself in a very unusual way, she started to touch the hearts of the readers not just by emphasizing the importance of connection but to the extent of narrating one of the powerful things a human can have, its control to its own thoughts, its freedom to be what it wants to be in this life.
One of the things I find interesting in the book is that it produces beauty from the human experiences through the flow of the words, their rhythm, and their souls. The way the author combined different elements like imagery, alliteration, and such things that produces the harmony in words makes it a masterpiece.
I also like the mix of emotions that it is not focused on one but on the variety of feelings a human can have in his/her lifetime and how it catches its readers with the beauty of life despite the ugliness of certain realities especially that it tackles about the social and economical systems. This is also one thing that made the book create a greater connection to the readers thus building the connection the author firstly created through her passion.
Being a lover of poems, I find Behind the Facade really refreshing and definitely a must-read!
"Behind the Facade," which I won via Goodreads Giveaways, shows poet Camille Barr's views of the world around her and how she reacts to it. It is beautifully written in free verse (my favorite) and I commend her on her imagery and for sharing a part of herself with the world that most people tend to keep hidden. I have a great appreciation for poetry because it requires the writer to be honest and the reader to think, two musts Barr accomplishes with ease. Well done, and well worth the read!
I received a mobi.file copy of this book from the author through a giveaway she had on LibraryThing.com, and the following is my honest opinion.
Being the successfully voracious book reviewer, I am, I love to read a wide variety of genres; and from time to time, I’d like to add some poetry into the mix, which is why I’d enter the giveaway for this.
When we think of poetry, we usually think of romance. We think of the thought provoking messages it’s endeavoring to communicate to our hearts and minds. When we look at a building all we can see is its outside, its façade, and hiding all of the complexities which is lurking behind it. What the author, Camille Barr, I feel has attempted to do in this book of poetry is to give us a combination of these two.
Ms. Barr in writing her poems apparently wants her readers to peel away what we see/hear regarding the world around us and reveal to ourselves what is actually there while we look through the rose-colored glasses we’re wearing. She wants her readers to accomplish this intention by reading these poems and then contemplating on thought-provoking messages written between the lines regarding all the rhetoric we’re the victims of seeing/hearing from our so-called helpful political figures. She wants her readers to contemplate on the reality of our so called helpful economical/social systems which had been originally created to help all those less unfortunate than we are, but which is no longer the case since its complexities have merely added barriers in fulfilling that original noble idea.
The somewhat cynical style of Ms. Barr’s writing I believe, is the only way she has to get her readers to use their minds and realize those wonder thought-provoking messages her poetry contains, which is why I’ve given her and her book 5 STARS.
A thought provoking book of poetry from a new talent, revealing what lies behind the facade of politicians' rhetoric, and behind our social systems which were designed to help those less able, the poor, the disenfranchised and the disabled.
Most of these were created long ago in a time which has now passed, and their evolution does not reflect today's reality. In fact much of what was designed to help is now guarded by 'gatekeepers', whose sole role it appears is to make it much more difficult to access the help that is needed. Camille brings our attention to what is and what could be, Lyn
This book is written by someone who loves language and loves the exploration of that. It's thought-provoking and evocative. If I'm honest, the social conscience was a little too much for me - I felt like I was being guided to feel a certain way and in a way I wanted to find my own path. It definitely does promote thought and questioning however and I look forward to re-reading; I feel it has a depth that warrants returning to!
I have just finished reading this beautifully penned book of poetry - I know that I will return to this book to re-read it. I was caught up in the beautiful imagery and the underlining messages in each poem.
I loved the poem titled Not Perfection on page 38 the words really resonated with me.
Beautifully written poetry that expresses both the beautiful and ugly side of life. Its brutally honest and thought provoking with underlying messages of encouragement and hope.
This book was a pleasure to read and i was left with some beautiful imagery and a pondering mind.
Behind The Facade is an amazing book of poetry! These poems touched my heart. I have read this book twice. Thank you Camille Barr for giving me the chance to read you poems. I love them!
This book of poetry is one of those books that has so many hidden gems of wisdom, that you can read it again and again. It reveals many of the truths behind the facade of our social and monetary systems as well as shining a light on the inequality caused by these systems/policies.
