As the Drought of the Century hits the United States, legendary creatures appear on Earth: Dragons. Like one of the famous commercials says: “Thanks to advancements in genetic engineering, Dragons are finally out of myth, and in your local pet stores!” From playful Outbacks to unpredictable Jade Tangs, these little dragons usually don't burn much, they love fruit and don't molest young virgins. But they are still monsters, and Jack Ports knows this very well. He sells all kinds of varieties in his Flight Garden, including the most dangerous of all: the American Mustang, a species of battle dragon created by a failed experiment of the U.S. Navy.
Dumped by his fiancee before the wedding and short on cash, Jack just wants to put his life back together, but after a colleague mysteriously disappears, he finds himself with a dragon egg of unknown origins. Set on raising it, Jack discovers that the egg contains a Primus, the First Dragon of a new species, whose genes hide a secret that many men are looking for.
Sci fi and fantasy writer. I currently live in Milan, Italy, where I wrote three more novels and a book of poems, which still have to be translated into English. I keep poetry in my heart and philosophy on my tongue (unfortunately, the brain is empty). I am a star lover and a cosmist philosopher, the last of my kind.
Action-adventure science fantasy which I think was trying to be a science fiction thriller complete with obligatory action girl, car chases, shootouts and Japanese gangsters.
Protagonist Jack Potts gets paid $3000 by his 'friend', an egg seller, to pick up a million dollar egg only to be attacked and the egg container stolen. Except he finds the egg was not in that container at all and Jack has a new dragon.
Decently written - I understand this was translated to English - and not a bad story if you like action/thrillers, but I'm sorry to say I don't. There was much left unexplained, in the last quarter I felt some of the action scenes were shoehorned in and I would have preferred if the book had spent a little more time developing the characters. However, this was an undemanding, unobjectionable read.
Anyone who knows me knows I rarely do dragons. The only exceptions are when the story is not set in a fantasy world (the only other one I read was by Heidi Peltier, Eyelids of the Morning, I think it was called). This book was set in a relatively normal future earth where dragons have been genetically engineered to remain small and sold as pets. Jack is a dragon breeder who isn't just in it for the money. He genuinely cares about his dragons. When an unidentified dragon egg ends up in his care, curiosity gets the better of him and he hatches it, and that's where a whole heap of trouble starts. There is some moderate bad language (that gets worse if you happen to understand or choose to look up the comments in French from Jack's business partner) in this book and a fair bit of violence but the story is compelling and I was gripped, sometimes with fear for those dragons, all the way through. Prepare to shed the odd tear. A very unique story and one I'm glad I took a chance on. There were some typos which I found slightly irritating - the whole word mister was used with a small m before surnames rather than the usual abbreviation of Mr. Probably because I think this was translated for the author, but the story more than made up for those.
Do you like dragons? Do you like adventure? Do you like real-world humor? Do you like love stories?
This is the book for you.
Okay, so this is my favorite kind of book in the way that it reads. I don’t mean the way the plot develops, or anything like that, but the voice of the author, the FEEL of the book. It is written in the first person, which really means I’m referring the voice of the character. I’m poor at describing this, but the way this book reads feels real. Though impossible ‘fantasy/science-fiction’ things are happening, and you know it’s impossible, it just feels real. The main characters thoughts, reasoning, reactions all feel REAL. Not like a valiant hero, or anything movie like. No. Reading this book, you find yourself just nodding along going ‘yeah, no, I feel you. I would totally do the same thing,’
Moving on from my gush about the writing style, everything else about this book is great. The dragons are unique, but still very traditional and extremely fleshed out. They are fascinating, and I am dying to read more, and learn more about these creatures in this world. The setting is familiar, but still somewhat exotic. The characters are real, and interesting. The plot is less than predictable, and the flow is perfect.
The only negative thing I have to say about this book is that it was too short. And I only say that because I’m greedy. Nothing about the book felt rushed, or unfinished. I just finished it took quickly, and find myself I love with these dragons, and wanting more.
Have you ever wanted a pet dragon? Even if you’ve never thought of it before, you’ll probably want one after you read The Dragon Seller by F.G. Ferrario. It’s not quite sci-fi and not quite fantasy, but a fun mix of both set in our same, but very different, world.
Set in the not-so distant future, a drought has swept across the United States and dragons exist. Yes, scientists have figured out how to create and breed small, pet-sized dragons and you’d better believe they’ve most likely replaced dogs as man’s new best friend. (They have also created pet unicorns, but honestly, they’re pretty boring compared to dragons and are mostly owned by little kids)
Jack Port raises and sells dragons in Idaho. From the snooty Pink French dragons to the wild and unpredictable Mustangs, Jack is an expert in all things dragons. He knows how to deal with the most cantankerous of winged beasts, and his huge, domed dragon habitat where his dragons reside is a literal dragon paradise, divided into sections and filled with each dragon species preferred fruit trees.
But with the knowledge and connections about dragons comes danger. Where there’s money to be made with a new commodity, there’s going to be a seedy, criminal underworld dealing with the new profitable product on the market- only the products now are dragons.
Through a secret drop off for a friend gone very, very wrong, Jack comes into a possession of an unusual and one of a kind dragon egg and this is where the adventure really begins/takes off. From gangsters to the government, Jack and his fellow French dragon colleague and a newly acquainted female botanist from a nearby university (who also happens to be very, very pretty), are now on the run for their lives and for the life of this never before seen species of dragon.
The story is fun, swiftly paced, with action, bad guys, and man-made but quite real (in this world, anyway) dragons (lots and lots of dragons!). The author takes the dragons from magical and mystical beings to real, scaly beings with lots of personality (ranging from super sweet to “stay away from this dragon unless you want to be burned to a crisp”).
You could, of course, compare The Dragon Seller to Jurassic Park but The Dragon Seller is an original story set in a world all of its own. The sections of the dragon manual, which describes the different dragons of this new world through Jack’s seasoned knowledge and appreciation and are scattered throughout the book, is a stroke of fun brilliance, as we’re able to to explore the different breeds and their origins.
While the cast of characters are fully fleshed out and entertaining, the real stars of the book are the dragons, especially one certain unique fellow, who will fully steal your heart and honestly, steals the entire book.
I've had this little book in my queue for at least 2 years, and now I am sorry I waited so long to read it.
I've had a love for dragons since I was a child, but after reading the series "Dragon Riders of Pern" by Anne McCaffrey, I fell head over heels in love with then. But I've not really read anything since that series that touched my dragon-loving heart, until now. "The Dragon Seller" is a wonderful story of a man with a true and sincere love for his dragons, and the things he will go through to care for and protect them.
Yes, it's a fantasy tale, but love is love regardless, and this was just a delightful story from start to finish. If you enjoy "dragon" tales, and have passed over this little gem, let me assure you, you are missing out on a real little treat.
What happens if someone is able to gene splice and create a dragon? Ferrario's dragons are funny, quirky vegetarians. Jack is an average guy, a veterinarian with a lifelong love of dragons who can't stand to see any animal abused. He's no super hero, but he finds himself embroiled in an adventure he never wanted. The story is delightful, the dragons are fantastic, and I look forward to more of Ferrario's books.

I have read The Dragon Seller multiple times, and I love it just as much as when I read it the first time. And now there is a prequel!
In near future America, genetic engineering creates little pet dragons.
Jack keeps, breeds, and sells dragons. Small, vegetarian, fruit-obsessed dragons. Until one day an unusually valuable egg is left in his hands, and what comes out of it is rather bigger.
This is a fun story and an easy read, decently written and well-edited. The dialogue punctuations looks weird to me, but I have seen this style advocated and it is used consistently, so I assume it is deliberate.
Not much science fiction content apart from the dragons — which are fun, and not too cutesey. Overall, an enjoyable adventure which will appeal to dragon-lovers.
Though labelled as Book 1, this is a standalone story.
This was really really good. The idea of tiny little dragons appealed to me. I also really enjoyed the whole idea. Genetically modified future dragons? I dunno. Cool. The story was solid and I really liked Jack. It's funny to me, I often get annoyed because every book seems to be part of a series...but then I find a stand alone book and I'm mad because I want more! :)
Well written, easy to follow in general other than some travel elements, an interesting new twist on dragons origins and development! The characterization of both the people and the creatures made the story engaging. Loved the details about the dragon development beginning to end which was so well thought out it really gave the fantasy feature credibility. The only drawback was there was a bit less drama than it might have had. All in all, it's a good read for fantasy fans looking for a new dragon concept.
This is the kind of book that made me love self published books. We get new kind of ideas and stories where the author has more freedom to flesh it out how they like it. Vegetarian dragons who have a bond-like relationship to trees and loyal like pets, so cool. It is a fast paced, easy to read Urban fantasy with likeable characters. Some questions remained unanswered, which is fine by me, but I hope there are more books in this setting.
I love how the story narrator at times is the main character, as if he is writing his memoirs and adding commentary, and other times, most of the time, the action just flows. I also very much enjoyed the notes and the dragon descriptions throughout.
The story about the dragons, where they came from, and their impact on humans is excellent and a bit unique! I thought this story was excellent!
Love a good dragon book and this is one of those. It would be wonerul to give it a 4.5! The strong language makes it difficult to recommend for the young YA reader (even though the majority of them probably engage in its use when away from adult authority, or not). Having the story set in the USA was a refreshing aspect that kept me engaged from the beginning. I have to admit that I'd love to read a sequel! Keep on writing!
This book was very entertaining with a great plot. I've read lots of books about dragons and this one was quite different. The story takes place in the not so distant future with scientists able to create Dragon eggs with a variety of species introduced in the storyline. I hope that there may be more stories from this author about dragons.
Fantastic story about dragons and a human who loves them. Really believable and wonderful. Recommend to any one who likes dragons. My sympathies were all with the dragons.
That book about Dragon that held my attention. I would recommend it to anyone who likes dragons. Well plotted and we'll written.
I enjoyed this book. Halfway through the book I realized the author had me convinced their are indeed dragons. He explains each species in detail and soon you have a picture of it clearly in your mind. It takes a really good writer to convince you dragons exist and we all know there is no such thing as a dragon. Right?
I was hesitant about taking time to read this book, it's not my usual choice. But am I ever glad I did! Wow! Excellent story and characters! You feel like they are real and somewhere out there someone is selling dragons! I loved the dragons! Each personality and the descriptions,, such a good story! I couldn't put it down! Loved it!
I loved this book! A very engaging story full of wit and heart from beginning to end. I would never have thought someone could write a realistic story about dragons living and interacting with us in modern society, but here’s the proof!
I dare you to read the first three pages. (I expect you will be hooked just like I was!)
I've read many, many dragon books. Some really great one, some really boring ones. This story line is unique, fun, and entertaining. It is NOT juvenile, like many I've mistakenly purchased. It is also not like a 'GoT', where you have to memorize 125 main characters. I love how real the characters are, the setting is also a surprise. Do yourself a favor, read this one!
Pretty good sci-fi. The book takes place in an America which has been suffering through a drought that has lasted for many years. How that helps the story is anybody’s guess. Other than that it held my interest throughout, and got downright exciting toward the end, if somewhat improbable. Ah, sci-fi. Well worth the read.
I have always enjoyed dragons, ever since I was little. So generally read anything that has them as a character. The author has come up with a new and unique way of looking at dragons. Dont be fooled about the pet dragon line. This is above and beyond that. I am just sad there isn't 5 more books waiting for me. Please write more soon.
I enjoyed this book because it was so different. It's a quick read and catches you immediately. I now want a pink Dragon.!! Loved the characters, and style of writing is excellent. My first F.G. Ferrari book, and I will be looking for more.
Superb background of science interwoven into a thrilling story. Similar to the Heinlein story about a boy and his "pet" but with adults and a sweet love story. I hope Ferrario has written many more stories.
I really enjoyed reading this book! This is the first time I've read anything from this author but I will be looking forward to more. I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves dragons.
With swoosh and a swoop this book takes off and doesn't come down until the end. Read in a single day, I found this to be a very good read and look forward to reading further by this author.
I'm always a little hesitant with free books; they're usually disappointing from the start or I hate the ending. But this was a great surprise -- Good story all the way through; even the footnotes are interesting!
Ignoring grammatical errors, I thoroughly enjoying immersing myself in this ingenious look into Ferrario's world that includes Dragons....what a joy!!! This writer brought dragons back to life for me and I am so pleased....Thank You!!!
I liked the whole writing style, fly on the wall commentary, point of being there kept me riveted to the pages. Did not want to stop reading. Story telling has just made a come back.
Adorable fantasy with dragons, grabbed my interest and held it. The majority would love to have a dragon pet and love the dangerous ones the most, too bad it's just a fantasy
