Dr. Marie Wilson is a scientist on the verge of a breakthrough. She has come to Montana on the eve of a blizzard to prove her small, portable solar panel can generate electricity even in the harshest environment. But when four men invade her remote cabin with plans to kill her, she knows she’s in trouble.

Ex-Special Forces soldier, David Quinn, has had enough of danger and death. All he wants is to be left alone on his Montana acreage to pursue his dream of being a beekeeper. But when his old mentor convinces him to help retrieve a stolen solar panel, he thinks it will be a simple job. But the moment he sets eyes on Marie, he knows their assignment is all kinds of wrong.

Together, they escape. Chased by a businessman with unlimited resources, a gunman and a corrupt police force, they are thrust into the frozen Montana landscape. Can a cynical soldier and a naive scientist learn about love and trust in order to survive?

I devoured this book in 24 hours so it's safe to say I really enjoyed it! Dr Marie Wilson has spent seven years of her life working on a breakthrough scientific experiment: a portable solar panel that is based on plant technology. If the prototype she's made works, it could change the world. She's in a remote cabin in Montana, testing the prototype to make sure it works in extreme cold.

She finally has some interest after spending years being shunned as a pariah in the scientific community, thanks to her ex who stole her previous idea and patented it as his own. Her millionaire father won't give her a cent, so she's reached out to everyone she can think of and finally has another scientist interested. However, what Marie doesn't know is that there is a group of people known as The Syndicate who stand to lose a lot if her technology is validated, and so they arrange for her prototype - and her - to disappear.

David Quinn is ex-Special Forces and he's part of a motley crew trying to track down a thief who stole something from his mentor, but when he arrives at the destination he finds a terrified woman who swears the invention is her own. After the goons he's with make threats to harm her, he realises something is very wrong and helps her escape. When David overhears something he shouldn't, he realises Marie was not the only target. They then spend several long days playing hide and seek with the people trying to kill them both.

What was refreshing about this book is that unlike most romantic suspense books, both the protagonists and the reader know the who and why from the very beginning. It's all about the chase, and the sizzling attraction between David and Marie that won't be denied. He thinks he wants to live his days along on his property, and she thinks she can't ever trust a man again, but it turns out they're both wrong... they just have to live long enough to realise it.

It was clear the author had done her research about the scientific sub-plot and there was some amusing banter that lightened the book in places. If you enjoy romantic suspense, then you'll enjoy this book.

Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.
Renting a cabin in the middle of a snow storm might not have been Marie's best idea, but her solar panel needed testing in such conditions. When four men invade that cabin, saying they need the panel, she knows her life might be over before she got her panel tested. David is one of those four men. He didn't sign up to murder a woman in cold blood, whether or not she had stolen the panel, which he didn't believe. Together they evade the other three men after Marie, they learn just who they can really trust and they hope they can survive the storms coming at them.
Far too long for the usual hangover cure, sitting at 250 odd pages, but this book landed in my queue just as I needed one and I used it as such! Because after 3 very heavy books, this was JUST what I needed.
Told from every major player's point of view, we are fully aware, right from the start, who is doing what and why. There are no major plot twists, no complicated and difficult to follow plot lines, nothing too taxing on the brain. And I mean this in a bloody god way! It was a really easy read.
Aside from Marie and David's story, there is, I think, the laying out of a plot that could follow through the other books in the series. Maybe. Involving Finn, Tim, and Michael, David's street brothers. I might be reading more into this than I should, but thats the feeling I'm left with!
I've read a couple of Kelly's books before. I like how she plots and plans and, most importantly, delivers!
A very well written, but long, hangover cure.

Dr. Marie Wilson is renting a cabin in Montana to test the new solar panel that she has created when 4 men break into the cabin looking for a prototype and a gizmo. The men all work for Marshall Portman, the president of Public Domain Energy. When one of the men, David Quinn realizes the plans of the other men he manages to escape with Marie.

Now David and Marie are on the run and David is accused of kidnapping Marie. With the help of some of David's friends, including FBI Special Agent Finn Callaghan will they be able to keep ahead of Marshall and his men?

I really enjoyed this book and found it full of action from the start to the finish. I loved the idea of such a powerful solar panel that could save so much money and I understood why someone would want to stop the project.

Marie was a tough lady but was definitely in over her head but at the same time she was innocently naive when it came to her father and also why people would be after her. I loved the gradual friendship and trust that developed between her and David and how that gradually led to more.

The relationship between David and Marie was awesome and I loved how strong they were together although I was definitely mad that Marie tried to take certain matters into her own hands!

There was a real cat and mouse style writing to the book and it really kept the reader engaged and super curious on how they would find them. Things made total sense once they were revealed and I liked how everything played out.

This was a great first book and I am really looking forward to more in the series!!

“Sun Storm” by Marlow Kelly follows inventor and scientist, Dr. Marie Wilson, as she struggles to finally have her work validated, only to discover that her portable solar panel may be worth killing for. Forced to escape with a man whose loyalties are questionable, Marie must quickly determine who to trust with her very life, with a fatal outcome if she’s mistaken.

This romantic suspense story is the first book in ‘The Gathering Storm’ series and provides an exciting tension-filled read. There are delightful twists and I liked the way clues are gradually revealed, plus the hero is a war-wounded ex-military man who backs into the role of rescuer but is definitely up for the challenge. I was less impressed with the naivete of the brilliant scientist who can come up with such wonderful ideas yet has no idea about certain major issues in both her personal and professional lives. Many of the secondary characters are almost caricatures but I would definitely be interested in learning more about a certain couple of FBI agents. For me, the mysterious arch-villains seem a little over the top, and although I liked that one of the bad guys got his comeuppance, the scene strayed into territory that felt better suited to a 007 story. Despite these minor irritants, I enjoyed the story and the sometimes madcap interactions between the main characters and I recommend it to anyone looking for an exciting adventure.

Marlow Kelly has some memorable lines in this thriller/mystery romance. The one that hooked me even before I opened it:

*** He rolled his eyes. "Where are my manners? The next time someone's trying to kill you, I'll just politely as if you'd like to get in my truck. Do you want me to curtsey while I'm at it?" ***

I do love some good banter.

This story took off and didn't let up.

Granite City, MT. Dr. Marie Wilson (scientist, mechanical engineering, organic chemistry) had to drive several miles to get to her rustic cabin (highway # 89) as the landlord described it to her.
Professor Hargreaves (Montana Tech, DoE) would soon join her.
It defiantly wasn’t him at the door.
Handsome & Killer were trying to decide what to do with Marie.

Marshall Portman (David’s BMF, Public Domain Energy’s president) had hired Brad “Pretty Boy” Harper (team leader), Alex Paxton (twin) & Shane Paxton (twin) to retrieve a certain stolen item.
Some how Marie had escaped them & was on the run.
A bright orange, compact VW Bug drove up beside her & a voice told her to get in.
It just happened to be David Quinn (twin, ex-US ARMY Green Beret Master Sergeant, PTSD, Afghanistan) again.
David later called FBI SAC Finn Callaghan (Granite City) & said he needed a favor.
FBI SA Callaghan listened to Dr. Wilson about her invention: a solar panel prototype.
Detective Ramirez (Granite City-Elkhead County PD) had some bad news for Dr. Wilson, Professor Hargreaves had been killed in a car accident.
David & Marie hitched a ride with Jake a ORD.
Later he had to push Marie to the floor of the house.
BANG! BANG! Shots were tearing through the walls.
Mac Klein (former state trooper) had been killed.
As they drove off in the Chevy truck it was getting a lot of holes in it also.
It was Pretty Boy Brad Harper & they were sure he would follow them.

What is Marshall (N/A hacker, aka Michael Phillips) up to?
What was Cruz MacDonald (55+, Big Sky News owner) reporting

A very awesome book cover, & great font/writing style. A very well written romantic thriller book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great thriller movie, or better yet a w mini TV series. To be continued. A very easy rating of 5 stars.

Wow. Just wow. This book has it all. Thrills, lots of suspense, romance, very fast paced, a plot line that makes perfect sense, and more twists than a mountain trail. Seriously, this book is everything I’ve been craving in a romantic suspense book for a while now. This book moves very quickly. Don’t even try to catch your breath and be prepared to start it and have the need to finish it in one sitting.

David and Marie are some of the more mismatched people that an author can come up with as a hero and heroine. Sure, we’ve all read the alpha Special Forces hero to the rescue of the naive, sheltered scientist but Ms. Kelly gives them qualities that they didn’t even think they had themselves. Marie does not come off as helpless, just confused. David is the biggest marshmallow and he knows it. He just doesn’t like to admit it to many people. Also, their backstories are powerful and lend themselves to the overall arc of the book and to the relationship.

I wish I could go into the plot with a lot of detail but that would spoil it. Let’s just say that Ms. Kelly sets up the whole story up from the beginning with most of the major players in place. You know the major plot points but Ms. Kelly has a way of throwing you off guard and decides she needs to add a person or two to really shake it up. I’m looking forward to her other stories in this series to further explore that. And yes, I can’t talk about it because, well, you just have to read the book and trust me, you will be gobsmacked. In fact, in some ways, it’s still processing in my head.

I can not tell you how much this book meant to me. It surprised me, left my neck hurting not to mention my fingers wrapped around my Kindle and can’t wait to dive into the next one in the series. Ms. Kelly is just brilliant in her storytelling, characterization and taking the romantic suspense/thriller genre to a whole new level. I can’t believe that I’m just finding out about her and the books that she has written.

Don’t do what I did and find out about her too late. You will definitely be sorry and kick yourself for it.

A really tough book to put down. This is a good thriller with lots of twists and turns. Marie is a child prodigy, a scientist trying to create another source of energy for us. A small mobile type of solar energy. One to help med units, army units, people living in the wild, well many, many things. Enough things to make the big companies nervous enough to make sure she can’t sell it. One of the guys that intends to make sure she can’t sell it was told she stole it and he intends to get it back for his company. David, a decorated soldier, has no idea that a killing is in the planning.

This is a different sort of plot; maybe a little more modern than what you might be used to. Different enough to keep me reading and good enough to keep me guessing a little at who would be good and who would be bad. This is not a book with a huge amount of main characters although there are several characters involved. I had no problem knowing “who was who”, so to speak. I think that’s because Kelly did a very good job with defining her characters. Each seemed to have his or her own unique personality. There is a little romance in this book; not enough to ruin the book for me. It is more romance in the sense of desire than sex (can there be a difference for that).

Sun Storm is Book 1 of a series titled “The Gathering Storm Series”. Marlow Kelly has several books published, all with good reviews.

Dr. Marie Wilson is in a cabin with no electricity and no running water, during a snowstorm, to test her solar panel, her own design that will blow the power grid apart if it's successful. Four men burst into the cabin, looking to take the solar panel and kill her. David Quinn is one of the men, and not down for murdering anyone. They go on the run, the ride of their lives. The blurb looked very interesting, but the book is intense and suspenseful, and even better than I expected - I was up until 3:00 in the damn morning because I couldn't put it down. The action started a few pages in, and never stopped. It doesn't take David long to figure out who's after them, but he has trouble convincing Marie. David and Marie have some amusing banter - she hounds him about swearing and manners. This is my first read from this author, and I'm hoping to read the next book soon.

If you love a good suspense book with police corruption and deceit by big corporations, Sun Storm should be your next read. Marie has spent all her money developing a portable solar panel to help get electricity to underdeveloped villages and countries after natural disasters. Thinking this is a much needed invention, she is unaware of the affect it will have on big companies. David had a rough start in life, went off to the military and now just wants to live on his land and raise bees. When Marie is attacked, David has no choice, but to do the right thing and continuously save her. Intriging story with just the right amount of mystery and romance. I loved David as someone who just wants to be left alone, but can't walk away from doing the right thing.

This book is exciting and wonderfully written. I don’t believe I’ve read this author but the story was so well told that I’ll certainly read more of her books. There’s excitement, adventure and mystery, plus, situations that keep you glued to the book. Imagine street kids finding someone who will give them a home, education and life itself! So many look for that today. David Quinn was one of those kids that went to school, joined the military special forces, experienced wounds as a soldier, and now wanted the quiet life. In his heart, he always protected others and that carried on after his military career. He met Dr. Marie Wilson, a scientist, and I laughed as his life became a challenge. He never knew what she would do or where she would be. I absolutely loved this book and I want more stories like this.

Couldn’t finish it

Great story line with slot of potential but I couldn’t get past the immature and stupidity of the main female character. She’s being shot at and acting like an immature brat. There are too many books out there to read to waste my time dealing with a whiny character and hoping that she becomes more tolerable ...

I like how the author brings two people together that are polar opposites. Each encounters the other and immediately knows they are not for them. It breaks my heart that children had no parents and the others came from affluent parent. The contrast made that the homeless children grew up with better to face adversity.

Engaging protagonists

1. Excellent action/prose, pretty good editing
2. Graphic “romance” type “one-true-mate” theme (overdone and not necessary IMHO)
3. It’s a series!

If the “romance” angle is tempered a bit, I look forward to reading more books in this series.

Four men are hired to recover a stolen solar panel prototype. They track the prototype to a cabin in a remote location in the mountains. The four men have to trek through snow to reach the cabin. When they reach the cabin they barge in on the woman accused of stealing the prototype a Dr. Marie Wilson.

Upon entering the cabin they search it thoroughly but can’t find the prototype. The men discuss where she could have hidden the prototype and after getting a look of Marie the men also talk about what they plan to do to Marie. When one of the men hired to find the prototype, ex-military guy, David hears what the others are planning to do to Marie he wants no part of hurting a woman. David helps Marie to escape the other men. He has no idea what he has gotten himself into. After David and Marie escape he starts to believe Marie when she tells him that she didn’t steal anything that the prototype was her creation.

David overhears his friend and mentor the guy who talked him into taking this job and helping him out he learns that this guy is not the person David thought him to be. David learns that not only are they after Marie but they are after him as well both of their lives are in danger.

They can’t turn to the local police as they have already been bought out and are corrupted. With no one to trust they take to the road but everywhere they go the bad guys are there a head of them. How are they going to get out of this alive? Who can they trust? Wherever they show their heads bullets start flying.

Sun Storm is a very intense and suspenseful read that had me hooked from the first page. It started out with action from the beginning and didn’t let up until the very end. It had me racing through the pages rooting for Marie and David hoping that they were going to make it out alive. The suspense was so invigorating that it keep the adrenaline pumping.

Sun Storm is great introduction into The Gathering Storm series. The characters are all so warm and welcoming drawing you into their lives and making you fall in love with them. You wish that you were there with them to give them a hand. I would love to see more of these characters in future stories.

I would recommend Sun Storm to all fans of suspense or romantic novels with a whole lot of action.

Sun Storm is my first introduction to Marlow Kelly’s writing. It, also, begins The Gathering Storm series. I had no problem having it read in a few hours. The suspense and mystery made me want to keep turning the pages to find out what would happen next with Dr Marie Wilson and David Quinn.

I give Sun Storm four and a half stars. I look forward to the next installment from The Gathering Storm series.

I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

Not only is Sun Storm a wonderful romance, it’s also a great choice if you want something suspenseful.

All Marie wants to do is test her solar panel. It’s exactly that, however, that leads a group of thieves to her doorstep. They claim they’re there to recover the solar panel she stole from a local energy company, and it’s clear they’re willing to do whatever it takes to get it back.

True to its suspenseful roots, Sun Storm jumps into action from the get-go. That action continues through-out the novel, and the stakes somehow intensify from there. Which you wouldn’t think would be possible, considering how high they start out.

At the same time, that suspense is balanced out by everything you’d hope to find in a romance. Marie meets her love interest, but they have some trouble getting together. There’s even a point when you question if they actually will get together. But the couple also has their sweet moments, and, as a reader, you just can’t help rooting for them.
