Welcome to the Third Novel in The Reemergence. Baby Astrid and the magic that she is grows older, and around her all things ancient awaken, changing the modern world, and not always for the better. Abe Fellows--recent graduate of Quantico and newly minted agent of Tapper--is sent to London to investigate a series of bizarre mutations that seem to have been infected by an arcane virus. All creatures great and small flee the waters of the eastern Atlantic, fleeing panicked and mindless to escape an unknown threat that comes from an unknown place and time, and Fyelrath brooks no assault on her domain. The dragon of water joins Abraham in his hunt for answers as threats emerge from the city as well as the deep. And it's only a matter of time before the eldritch threat rises up from its slumber, and consumes Earth. Again.
I am the creator and author of Tesser: A Dragon Among Us as well as Elmoryn's The Kinless Trilogy, Colony Lost, Adrian's Undead Diary and the Darkness of Diggory Finch.
I've gone to a LOT of college. I've got a Business degree as well as a Psychology degree, and I've done the full program at the school of hard knocks. I've been a printing press operator, bouncer, purchasing agent, bodyguard, customer service representative, mental health counselor, and more. I can write about weird shit because I've done weird shit. Trust me.
I call the wonderful state of New Hampshire my home, but I love to travel. I love to read, write, play role playing games, miniatures games, video games, and Magic: The Gathering. When I find the time to be active, I like to hike, play basketball, and play football. I am married to a wonderful woman, and together we have two wonderful daughters.
Sad to say that this is my least favorite book in the series so far. I thought Ambryn was okay because it was at least coherent until the ending when it felt rushed. Fyelrath lacked focus and reasoning. Often, I questioned a character's purpose in a scene. Why are they here besides being a side character until the very end? I thought the ending was worse than Ambryn; it felt unfinished. Fyelrath herself didn't have as much charm as Tesser or Ambryn, which I understand could be because of her lack of interaction with humans (at least from my perspective). I asked a lot of questions, received very few answers, and left feeling confused. I will say this, though: I listened to the audiobook. I didn't mind the new narrator (not as good as the original, but still decent), but I think that I could have had a better understanding of the book if I could go back and read the text myself. Let's hope that Tesser: A Father Enraged goes back to the roots and charm of the Reemergence series.
So far, I'm sad to say this has been my least favorite of the series. Tesser is my favorite so far, but I think Ambryn probably had the best and most solid plot. Fyelrath left me confused and feeling like the author left a lot of the plot and detail in his head. I still intend to follow the series, but I feel like the history and backstory of the dragons and who they are needs to be fleshed out some more. I'm afraid the books will make less and less sense without more explanation and detail.
It was OK. I think the problem is that building these novels around the seven dragons means that there is a real lack of tangible threat. Because the dragons are pretty much omnipotent its hard to take any threat to those dragons seriously.
I also think that the only reason Chris Philbrook established the fact that two of the lead characters were WoW players was so they could use the phrase "Leroy Jenkins" as they charged into the final battle.
I also love the twists and spins that Philbrook has done with both the Dragons and the creatures of each book. This remains true for this book, Abraham and Fyelrath definitely take center stage and shine, but the attention given to the story of the antagonist is also very engaging.
While I always enjoy Philbrook's writing, this one was beyond exceptional. I couldn't bring myself to step away from the story, far too often for getting anything else done.
