Brock Lowell is discontent, even though he’s at a point in his life when he should be thriving. After a recent heart attack, his father has given him control of the Blue Star Ranch, just like he’s always wanted. It has to be wedding-perfect within a few months for his brother’s nuptials. He has the power to implement the programs he’s wanted to for so long.
But the entire process only serves to remind him how alone he is. It would be even better if he had someone to share the journey with. Payton Hanniford has it bad for Brock Lowell. She always has. But he’s always looked at her as his sister’s best friend, meaning off-limits. Drastic measures might need to be taken to change his perception of her.
But maybe the romance in the air will work in her favor…
NY Times and USA Today Bestselling author J.M. Madden writes compelling romances between 'combat modified' military men and the women who love them. J.M. Madden loves any and all good love stories, most particularly her own. She has two beautiful children and a husband who always keeps her on her toes.
J.M. was a Deputy Sheriff in Ohio for nine years, until hubby moved the clan to Kentucky. When not chasing the family around, she's at the computer, reading and writing, perfecting her craft. She occasionally takes breaks to feed her animal horde and is trying to control her office-supply addiction, but both tasks are uphill battles. Happily, she is writing full-time and always has several projects in the works. She also dearly loves to hear from readers! So, drop her a line. She'll respond.
There wasn't anything wrong with the book but I found it boring. There didn't seem to be a plot and everything felt off. Romance was lack-lustre, I mean what 32 year old woman continues to have a crush on a 37yr old man? The hero seemed immature and what was the great pain in his life that made him act out? He seemed to have a good family life. This one didn't work for me at all.
It started out strong but quickly lost momentum. Nothing happened in the middle, the book just stopped moving forward and was just plain boring. Also, I didn't like the dynamics of the romance, with her chasing him and getting rejected over and over again.
The author gives a lot of throwaway lines about these characters that are crazy and make them seem so unlikable. Like she hasn't been with anyone in 10 years, and she wasn't bothered by watching him with the parade of women he dated. He ditches a woman who tries to get more from him than sex, and he's slept with all the women in town but her.
Payton comes off as just plain pathetic which I don't think the author wanted. I think she wanted her to seem strong for going after the man she wanted but wtf was she doing for TEN YEARS? She did nothing to win him for 10 years and then she suddenly chasing after him? Nothing in the story explained why now she was going to go after him. She spends the whole book chasing him, kissing him, walking around in front of him naked, and overall making the moves on him and he keeps pushing her away. The fact she is suddenly so persistent just adds to how pathetic she is. She gets rejected by him over and over during the course of the book. In the 1st scene he even says she's there because she's desperate to get her hands on him and she is! She doesn't waver from her obsession with him.
Brock's one of my least favorite type of characters because I just hate man whores. He's allowed to sleep with the whole town and she's spending her nights at home alone and she doesn't even CARE that the man she loves if off fucking other women . . . . He's not kind, he's not funny, or smart, or much of anything other than handsome so I don't get why she's so hung up on him.
There is also a lot of casual sexism, like Brock being turned off by a woman when he heard she treats men the way that he treats women. He's allowed to love 'em and leave 'em but if she does she's a ho. He's shocked he can enjoy Payton's company because the women he usually dates are so damned annoying and never shut up on dates. Even Payton is casually sexist saying that one of the villains "hits like a girl."
There's not much to recommend about this book unless you are looking for a book where the woman is the aggressor.
1 star. I didn't like it, even though it was well written.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The anticipation for the next Lowell sibling's book increases with each one. Normally you don't know who a future books characters significant other is ahead of time but JM chose to torture us by letting us know who all the H/h were going to be in Forget Me Not.
Brock Lowell is now running the Blue Star Ranch after his father's heart attack. Its a job he's always wanted and is good at but then why is he feeling melancholy and getting into bar fights.
Payton Hanniford has been friends with Brock's sister Cheyenne since middle school and has had a crush on him since she first met him. With their 5 year age difference he never looked at her as anything other than his little sister's best friend. Payton is now both a rancher and EMT and 32 years old and a little tired of Brock not recognizing her as a red blooded grown woman and that there is some sizzling chemistry between them if he would just stop being so stubborn.
Great mixture of western settings and sizzling romance. I loved Brock and Payton but I have been most exited to get Jackson and Emily's story which is next...
J.M. Madden has done it again. Untying His Not is another amazing read from this talented author. Ms Madden has, in just a few short years, zoomed to the top of my favorite author list. Untying His Not is a fine example of why. This book is well-written and loaded with fabulous, lovable characters. Brock and Payton's story has plenty of drama, action, sizzle and humor that will have readers excited to see what happens next. I totally loved this book and look forward to my next book by J.M. Madden. Untying His Not is book 1 of The Lowells of Honeywell, Texas Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
Untying His Not is a spicy and wonderful modern cowboy romance. Brock and Peyton have know each other most of their lives, but she's five years younger and he's always considered her off limits. Peyton has had an enormous crush on Brock for decades. This clever and well written story is steeped in personal issues, keeping these two 'made for each other' people just circling around each other. The frustrations and arguments are brilliantly written and brought me many smiles and outright laughs. The love scenes are sizzling and yet deeply loving. This is a magnificent start to a new series and I simply can't wait for the next story.
This one was a bit blah for me, mostly due to the romance, which was luke warm at best. The way that Brock fought his feelings for Payton got old fast. I could see him doing this if they were barely out of their teens, however Brock was firmly in his 30's, Payton just in her 30's. It's time for Brock to get over himself. The other part that I thought could have been done better was the mischief going on at the ranch. It was barely touched on, not really worth even putting it in.
What I did like was a few conversations that Brock had with Chad, his dad and Payton.
JM Madden is one of my One Click Authors because she never fails to deliver emotional stories and relatable characters. I've reread her "Lost and Found" series so many times, I've lost count. Brock Lowell, the main character in "Untying His Not" is the older brother to Chad Lowell, one of the three owners of Lost and Found Investigative Services. He didn't make a great first impression on us back then, but time has passed, and time changes things. And thank goodness for that!
These days, Brock is in charge of the family ranch. Everything is on his shoulders now, all the responsibility he's been raised for all his life. He's in his prime, he knows what he's doing, and he's ready. So why does he feel like something's missing?
Poor Brock, it seems every time he turns around, something else is going wrong, breaking down, or breaking lose - like the town hotheads at the local bar, or a huge bull from the pasture. Even the crush his little sister's best friend has had on him since she was a teenager.
And poor Payton! The woman has the patience of a Saint, I swear. She's been in love with the stubborn, bull-headed man for most of her life, and Brock's been practically blind to this reality for just as long. The closest he's come to acknowledging her feelings is saying admitting she has a crush on him. He's even convinced that she's somehow about ten or more years younger than he is, when their age difference is actually only about 5 years. (Shakes head in dismay.)
Payton is calm, steady, and persistent when she knows what she wants, and she's willing to go the distance, which is a good thing because Brock really is a lot like a bull: stubborn and hard to move once he's made up his mind. He's so darn sure that he'll ruin his relationship with his family if he tries to date Payton that he refuses to try.
Good thing Payton is in it for the long haul! This is a sweet second chance love story, but if you've read the Lost and Found books, there's and added layer of emotion as well. It kind of feels like redemption and forgiveness; Brock mends not just literal but also emotional fences. Along the way there's humor and tension, as well as a touch of suspense as well - it wouldn't be a JM Madden book without it! I can't wait to see what happens with Brock's sister, Cheyenne, and I'm dying to get to Chad's wedding, too! Brock's call to Chad made me a little teary-eyed, and I cannot wait to see them together again!
As always, I'm left wanting just a little bit more.
I received this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Untying His Not (The Lowells of Honeywell, Texas Book 1) Brock is the man that women want but only one woman will lasso a place in his heart. ByLisa D. Gibbson August 29, 2017 Brock and Payton's story was like a really slow burning fire but only because Brock kept thinking of Payton as his sisters best friend. There were signs that he like her more than he knew. His whole family wanted to see them together before he even realized that she was the one woman for him.
Payton is strong and independent as well as a paramedic. She is the perfect wife for a rancher. After all she owns her own small ranch. She has lusted after Payton for a long time now but Brock kept her in the friends only zone. She decides to take matters into her own hands. Brock won't know what hit him!
Brock is a misunderstood character as as been since we met him briefly in "Embattled Home" his brother Chad's story. He had come a long way to healing the rift between he and Chad since the first book and we found out even more about him in "Forget me Not" and we were introduced to Payton. Brock is a strong independent man who is perfectly capable of running the family ranch and now he has a chance to prove it and get the woman he doesn't know he loves. It's funny how his whole family knew before he did that he loved Payton. Sometimes you just miss what's right in front of you until someone points it out.
This was a fast, fun, sexy read. We meet some new characters whom I would like to know more about. JM Madden always leaves me hot and bothered and wanting to know more about the characters. "Untying his Not" is no different. I enjoyed the book a lot and even learned some things about horses that I didn't know before. I look forward to learning more about the rest of the Lowell's as we move to the next book in the series! Thank you for your review.
Brock and Payton have been dancing around the “off limits” because of being friends of the family. Payton has been best friends with Brock’s sister since grade school, and also been crushing on Brock for as long. Now they are grown adults, but still act as if they are in the school yard. Both stubborn and set in their ways, this is a formula for heartbreak. But when Payton has had enough, will Brock wake up and realize he may be losing not only a friend, but also his chance at true love?
Honestly, I was a little torn with this story. It’s different from other friends to lovers romances I’ve read, and it will get you wanting to punch the hero a few times as well as shake some sense into the heroine. But it’s the realism behind Brock & Payton’s story. There is no perfect romance…no perfect hero/heroine…but there is always a way to fight for a perfect happily ever after.
Would recommend and look forward to reading the rest of this series!
Brock is a tough nut to crack as the eldest son of a rancher. We met him in Forget Me Not as Chad's brother when he and Lora came to visit after Mr. Lowell's emergency. He's strong headed, independent and women love him. But being the oblivious man he is Brock never notices Payton as a woman. She's always been the friend of his sister, this little girl, and definitely off limits. After all these years Payton is tired of being subtle and starts to take a bit of control concerning her intentions towards him. As they work through a bit of trouble on the ranch they become closer. Through the story we meet some characters that will be front and center of their own books as we continue with the Lowells. If you enjoy this series you should read Madden's other books, the Lost and Found Series. I received my copy from the author and voluntarily wrote my review.
Do you need a new Cowboy book boyfriend? Well if you do I have one for you, and if you don't...well, he may become one anyway. Brock Lowell is the stereotypical, way too serious older brother that has trouble taking a break from his responsibilities of helping to run the family ranch. Payton Hanniford is the girl Brock has known most of his life but was so blind he didn't really "see her" until his world gets a little overwhelming and she is there to help him through. I loved everything about this story. You have romance, fun, laughter, action and sexy cowboys....really you can't ask for much more. The start of the Lowell Family series (a spin off from Lost and Found) is off to an amazing start and I cannot wait to get my hands on the stories for the female Lowells as well!
I love J.M. Madden's books, but found Brock and Payton's story slow reading. Payton was a whole lot of sunshine and I really adored her passion for everything important in her life, the obvious being her sensitivity and love for Brock, her best friend, Cheyenne's brother.
As for Brock, I wanted to shake sense into his clueless brain and found it difficult to stretch my mind around the concept that he'd be that dumb. His dialogue didn't seem natural to me so it colored the way I viewed this book. Finally, near the ending, Brock "got it," and the remainder was lovely.
I'm reading this series out of order and just started Forget Me Not. It's great to see a continuation of characters from previous books be included in the new ones. So, I definitely look forward to reading them.
This is the first official book of this new series and it starts off with a bang. I love Brock Lowell, who is Chad's brother, and Payton Hanniford, his sister's best friend.. It was a fast moving story filled with situations that made you feel right at home with this family. Dealing with his Dad's medical issues and trying to run the ranch as well as deal with his own issues keeps Brock busy trying to figure out what he needs to do next. One thing for sure, he's tired of being alone. Learning to look at his sister's best friend as something more than "off limits" is hard for him, but Payton is definitely up to the challange. I loved this story and enjoyed watching them find each other. You'll love this one too so get your's today.!
Oh boy, sometimes don't you just want to take a main character (especially a headstrong alpha male) and shake them until they see sense? LOL, so wanted to do that with Brock when he couldn't / wouldn't realize what he had right in front of himself with Payton. This book was a great first novel in the Lowells of Honeywell series and picked up nicely where Forget Me Not left off. Brock and Payton are a fun couple and I love seeing how characters we've already met continue to develop.
If you love J. M. Madden like I do or just love hot, sexy men, you need to check out this book. I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book and enjoyed every single minute of it.
I loved, Brock and Payton.... Brock and Payton, have been neighbors all their lives. Payton, has had a crush on Brock but he thinks he is to old for her... Payton, has always been there for him.... Brock, starts to notice Payton as a woman. They start to date, in the mean time, there is drama and suspense going on their Ranches. I loved the, Cowboy and western feel to this. I also loved the hot romance between them.
As always, I want the next book NOW!!! I love Ms. Madden books, get this and all her books today!!!!!
I did receive a copy of this book, but I chose to review it. I was under no obligation to do so.....
Payton Hanniford has been in love with Brock Lowell for years. Brock sees Payton as his kid sister's friend. He doesn't want to do anything that would effect their friendship since has been a part of his family's life for years.
When Payton helps Brock out after a bar fight he begins to realize she isn't a kid anymore but fights his feelings with his typically stubborn attitude. The pressure he is feeling to run the family ranch and not being good enough for her has him running hot and cold. Payton has waited a long time for him will her patience win in the end?
Great H/h, good flow and steamy love scenes make this a sure thing.
I've read everything in the LNF series and totally loved Chad and Lora's story. The Lowells of Honeywell introduce us to Chad's ranching family. Brock is the oldest and shoulders the responsibility of running the ranch since his dad's heart attack. Chad has sworn Payton off because she's his sister's best friend and like a daughter to his parents. What he doesn't know is that the whole family has had a pool going as to when he would finally wake up and realize she's his soul mate. I loved watching her untie all his nots about why they can't be together
I love everything Jm Madden writes and this is no exception. She delves deep into the characters, flaws and all, and makes you love them and root for the happy ending. Brock has kept his head buried in the sand for years and hasn't seen the signs that Payton is in love with him. He just sees her as his sister' best friend--a honorary member of his family. But finally his eyes are opened and he's beginning to think maybe there could be more than just a little friendship to this relationship.
First of all I love a happy ending! So this book was a fantastic read for that alone. Also Brock and Payton were great together. I love that Payron was a smart, outgoing , paramedic who was also an experienced cattleman. Honestly Brock was a fool for ignoring her for so long. I really like the way Chad and Brock reconnected and can n ot wait for this wedding! Bravo JM Write On ! Davia. This series is great and so is the Lost and Found and Embattled series. I highly recommend them for great uplifting stories.
She just knows how to make a story make your heart race. The author... she's the one that does it every time. Her words, be they funny, sad, even angry... they make me smile. Your heart hurts with the emotion she pours out every single time. Loved these characters, love where the story is going....
My favorite part:
"Oh, oh, fudge! If you two got together she would be Brock's Candy! Get it? Like Brach's Candy, with the pink and purple logo? Candy corn and… fudge." She laughed until tears leaked from her eyes.
I enjoyed this book and really liked how Peyton was open and honest about her feelings for Brock, and didn’t do the usual romance book scenario of playing games or pretending that she didn’t like him. It was refreshing to have a woman character just acknowledge her feelings and be open and brave and go after what she wanted.
The only thing I will say that I found highly annoying, was the fact that each character used each other’s full names regularly throughout a conversation, which doesn’t actually happen in real life. Other than that, an enjoyable way to spend a few hours on holidays.
I enjoyed Brock and Payton's story. I appreciated that she was willing to not be coy and try to hide her feelings. I liked her strong, independent nature, and her intelligence.
It did take Brock the majority of the book to get out of his own way, but he got there eventually. I also liked that touch of mystery and action that was thrown in and didn't drag out, overwhelming the romance.
I really wish Brock had figured himself out earlier, so there could have been more time seeing how his relationship with Payton evolved.
Seems a lot of people in Honeywell have a running her on how long it would take for Hayden to finally get Brock to notice her. Even though I miss the guys and women from LNF Agency I'm beginning to warm up to the Lowell family. Now that Garrett has let his eldest son take over running the ranch, it's given him time to play matchmaker.
I can't wait until the next book come out Cheyenne and Sheridan's will be just as good as this one.
Love is in the air in Honeywell and when you add one hot brooding Cowboy and his sister's best friend to the mix ..... nope, not giving anything away accept to say a must read!! I truly enjoyed Brock & Payton's journey and cannot wait for the next book in this series!!
I received an Arc for my honest opinion, but loved the book and bought my own as well!
Brock and Payton have known each other their whole life. Payton has been crushing on Brock for years but he has always thought she was to young and his sister's BF.
Finally years later his eyes are opened and he sees Payton in a new light.
I wanted a bit more to this relationship because once Brock finally gave in to his feelings it was over. Still a good story.
4.5 stars! I am a sucker for a brooding hero like Brock. He and Payton are a great match, and I loved how she had no problem voicing what she wanted. When Brock finally gave into the attraction, I loved him even more. Their date was adorable, and I liked how their relationship developed. The little bit of action at the end was a nice change of pace. Looking forward to the next installment!
Brock Lowell is one stubborn cuss who can't see the best thing that could ever happen to him when it's standing right in front of him. Payton Haaniford is one strong, independent womn who knows what she wants and that's Brock. Regardless of the roadblocks he keeps erecting, she's determined to chase him until he catches her.
