A great novella action thriller, yes my favourite type of thriller, action, assassins, great action, good pace, a good kick-ass female assassin.

Great location of Venice, it does help if you have been their.

Maggie Baker is formidable fighter even in hand to hand combat. Not only does she take out bad guys with guns, she also kills with knives and bare hands. Trained by a British intelligence called The Unit, a secretive covert group which she has been a member of since the age of sixteen after being helped by her now boss called Bishop.

Once she slips into her new persona called Rebecca from Miami and with her bodyguard, Leon West (another agent of the Unit) she arrives in Venice ready to make a deal to steal the drugs away from the British dealer Peter West. From that point on things go down hill and it becomes questionable whether Maggie and Leon will make it out of Venice alive.

A great read, good pace, good story, a new author for me and have bought the next one in the series and ordered the third out in January 2018.

Not bad, especially for a novella. Lots of action, cool descriptions, and a decent plot. The villains are a little cliche, but again, it's a novella. There's only so much page time.

That said, I expected Maggie to be a little more of a badass. But badasses don't forget they've got a weapon strapped to their ankle when they're in mortal danger. I can't even wear an anklet or toe ring for five minutes without it bothering the hell out of me, but Maggie, THE TRAINED ASSASSIN, can forget she's got a knife strapped around her leg until it's convenient to remember for the plot?

COME ON.

I can suspend belief for a lot when I'm watching an action movie or reading an action-type book. But this just doesn't make sense. There's no way someone with that much undercover/assassin experience would ever forget about their weapon. Just no way.

So, she's either a terrible assassin who can't work under pressure (and if so, why should I continue reading), or the author just wants to rely on manufactured tension, even if it doesn't make sense.

I wasn't crazy about the romance, either, but only because there's not a whole lot of time to do it right. It felt crammed in there, at least the sex did, and I wonder if it might have worked better with more anticipation than actual completion. All it did here was make me question Maggie's abilities even more.

Overall, it was rushed, but it wasn't terrible. I might be willing to try a full length Maggie novel, but I'm not convinced yet.

Sometimes a book lets you down as you feel it has missed a trick and not reached its full potential.
The idea of a modern female agent who had many female identities to call upon to use not so much as cover, but badass characters to exist within criminal circles and have ready access into this nefarious world.
This is a great jumping off point, especially as the location is Italy and the beautiful environment around Venice. A violent incident on a roof top has action and promises much more in this unique location.
What I didn’t get and the part of the story that left me dissatisfied was the romantic relationship; Maggie’s poor tradecraft and failure to act quickly enough when life is in danger.
The saving grace is that this is the start of a new series and the potential here is sufficient to believe that there is scope for this to become an innovative modern thriller series.

7/23, Sigismund’s Column. Warsaw, Poland. Maggie Black (27) was scoping out the target.
Jason Stroud seemed to be enjoying his dinner at the Krolewski Restaurant & Pub (Castle Square).
Mission accomplished.
UK. London, England. Bishop (28, boss) gave Maggie her next assignment.
Carlo Rossi (Italian, husband/widower) dealings in the region of Veneto.

He is an international distributor for cocaine/heroin.
Peter West is part of the food chain also.
Isabella Valentin is Carlo’s PA.
Venice, Italy. Leon Frost & Isabella (40+) met Rebecca Sterling (aka Maggie).
The meeting with Carlo would be at the Palazzina Grassi hotel (Krug Lounge).
Stefano Rossi (Carlo’s son) & Angela Rossi (granddaughter) were also in attendance.
Carlo was assassinated but not by Rebecca.
The shooter was on a boat going down the canal at high speed.

A few days later; Isabella informed the 2 of them Stefano wanted to talk with them.
He was later was assassinated also but again not by Rebecca.
Isabella was next.
Will Leon Frost Rebecca solve this mission?

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one. All thoughts & opinions are entirely my own.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written international espionage thriller book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great international espionage thriller movie, or better yet a mini TV series. To be continued. A very easy rating of 5 stars.

Thank you for the free Instafreebie; Author; PDF book

Not my cup of tea

I would give this a 2.5 rating. I wanted to like it a whole lot more because my daughter recommended it to me and I've been looking for good mystery / Thriller authors. But this fell well short of the mark for me.
1. I was fairly sure who the killer was about halfway through the book. I prefer to be uncertain a lot longer than that.
2. I am not a fan of Ian Fleming and, although this book turns the sexual stereotypes around, it still objectifies one sex over the other. Although the main character and her partner are supposed to be equally successful at their job, the man was just eye candy and nothing more. He didn't seem to have a significant thought in his brain and the author kept referring to his physical attributes. I get it already; he is dripping in sex appeal.
3. I know sex sells books but it was just unnecessary and distracting in this book. I just wanted it to be over so that we could get on with the action and mystery part of the story.
4. While this may not be the author's fault, the editing on the Kindle version was not good.
I really wanted to quit when I felt sure I knew who the killer was but kept with it to make sure. I'm glad it was just a novella so that it didn't take too long. I will not be reading any more of this series.

This is a great introductory book (Novella) and for once the lead character is a hard hitting, and smart heroine. Set in the wonderful city of Venice Maggie has to stop a drug deal at any cost. I really enjoyed this short story and look forward to the next full length novel.

Maggie Black is my new favorite heroine! Smart. Savvy. And not afraid to get her hands dirty. Maggie is one of the coolest spies I've read in a long time, and the Venice setting really comes alive on the page. The winding canals. Rooftops perfect for a daring chase. And the food. Don't read this on an empty stomach or you'll end up raiding your fridge.

Her partner--in more than one sense of the word--Leon is also nuanced and ship-worthy, and I love how he put so much trust and faith in Maggie instead of rushing in to rescue her. There were plenty of twists and turns, that kept me from guessing the true villain, but now I'm kicking myself because there were perfect clues places along the way.

If you like thrillers--and especially if you're looking for a lady spy with heart and a killer right hook--then I highly recommend this book. I can't wait for the first full novel, KILL ORDER, to come out!

Maggie Black is a special agent in The Unit, a British undercover group of highly skilled secret agents who are trained to fight, to kill, and above all, to follow orders. They are exceedingly well trained in disguises and all sorts of espionage. Maggie is a young woman raised in the streets and alleys, as it were, and escapes sure punishment in prison by accepting the deal offered to her: train long enough and hard enough to be excellent in whatever her assignments require, and don't hesitate to bend the law if that is required to achieve completion.

The kind of work required of her mandates mobility and secrecy, so social life can be only surface deep, that is, unless two agents fall for each other. Leon Frost had been one of the group she had trained with years ago. Maggie has a special place in her heart for him, but realizes a relationship between people like them is destined for failure. But then her boss assigns them to the same mission in none other than Venice, Italy. Maggie and Leon must squash a drug war between rival Italian families before their product ever gets to Great Britain.

The Italian government is providing undercover support but Maggie and Leon assume false identities as an American drug lord (Maggie) and her personal body guard (Leon), and are pretty much on their own dealing with the crime families. It doesn't take long for things to go terribly wrong. In fact, there is a real question as to whether either Maggie or Leon will even live to see Great Britain again.

Lots of fast paced action, some surprising double crossing, and an ending that leaves you wondering what is next for Maggie.

The recently published book is available as an eBook and a paperback, so check it out to see what James Bond would be like if he were an agent today and if he were a 28 year old woman!

Maggie Black, a member of the ultra secret Unit, which was developed to take on jobs for the government that maybe no other entity wants to touch, is called in from a job to take on a job to stop a big drug deal between an Italian Mafia Don and a British drug lord. Once she slips into her new persona with her bodyguard, Leon West (another agent of the Unit) she arrives in Venice ready to make a deal to steal the drugs away from the British dealer. From that point on things go down hill and it becomes questionable whether Maggie and Leon will make it out of Venice alive.

Maggie is a new and exiting agent. She is trained to go where a lot of others would refuse to tread. She is sharp and quick witted and good at what she is tasked to do. A well written and excellent new series to look forward to follow up stories from Maggie and The Unit.

Thrilling Action Packed read

This novel is what I've been waiting for. Maggie Black is a sassy kick ass heroine I've been waiting for in the spy world. Too many books are male based and it's so exciting to finally have a female at the forefront of a spy novel. Mcsporrans descriptions of Venice truly makes you feel like you are there.

I cannot wait for more Maggie Black...and now I just have to see Venice for myself too.

Maggie Black is tough as nails and definitely someone who's good side you want to stay on. Starts out on a quiet street in Warsaw and quickly picks up the pace as you travel to London then Venice, where you will soon find The water canals charged with violence and mayhem in his thriller. Mafia leaders, secret operatives and high speed chases will keep you reading as you are pulled into the adventure. Follow Maggie through the seedy underworld of drugs and weapons in one of the most romantic cities of Europe, discover with her who is behind the unlikely hit on the notorious Carlo Rossi. Be careful, just when you think you have it figured out, there's a new twist that will make you rethink everything you think you know. Oh and if you think it will all be wrapped up in a pretty package that leaves no questions...well you'll have to read Vendetta to find out if there are more questions than answers.

Maggie is a bada** and I love it. This story is fast paced and full of action and emotion. I loved the intrigue that comes with a spy/government/assassin type storyline and how the story went to another country. I figured out the true villain before the ending, but I still enjoyed the journey JM took us on to find the individual and how/why Maggie and others worked through the cast of suspects.

I read this book after reading Kill Order which I wish I had not done as some of the characters in this book had a different ending/role in Kill Order. If you have not read any Maggie stories yet read this one before Kill Order! Also this book provides more details about Maggie, Leon and their actual backgrounds which help to strengthen their characters and personalities.

Loved reading more about Maggie, I now have a major question I want answered, an certainly rooting for the Leon and Maggie relationship and can’t wait to see what set of missions they are on next!

Vendetta by Jack McSporran
Maggie Black or whatever name she’s going by in any particular story is the coolest of cool kids. A British ultra secret agency employs special people to perform slightly off the books, read dodgy, tasks for Her Majesty’s Government.

I enjoyed the yarn. It was character rich and the plot was twisty and plausible for the most part. It avoided the over complications some authors often see as necessary to the success of their novel. “Let me show the readers how clever I am, and they'll love me and buy my books,” they say.
Not here. Crisp story telling. Easy reading. I’ll be on the lookout for the next one in the series.

Vendetta is a novella, starring Maggie Black.

Maggie Black is a British covert operative going undercover as Rebecca Sterling, an American, with her on/off-again beau and fellow operative Leon to stop a drug deal before the drugs hit the UK.

With the help of a deep-cover agent, they are able to meet with the head of the drug family where Maggie as Rebecca attempt to push the buyer Peter West out of the deal, thereby stopping the drug transaction.

If it were easy, there wouldn’t be a story. Complicated by the relationship with Leon, who is undercover as her bodyguard, things do not go as planned.

I’m going to try the next one to see if some of the things that bothered me about this bada** operative go away/get better.

Happy Reading!

I absolutely LOVED this book. As a mystery/thriller it had me from page one all the way till the end. Maggie Black is an agent of the British intelligence agency and she is one heck of a agent. In the story, Maggie is sent to Venice to stop a drug deal between two Venetian mafia families. With everything that was going on trying to stop the drug deal, Agent Black didn’t let anything bring her down or stop her.The story is very well written with so much action, mystery, and thrills that you don’t want to put the book down.

As the first in a new series, I’m so glad to have read this and look forward to more in the life of agent Maggie Black.

PLEASE! the blurb said The Mafia, a covert British agency.... it was a love affair in Venice with daring acrobatic events, made by people dedicated to their country but not very well written. That said I read to the end...and that was at 76% of the finished book. Then it was all adverts for the next book, which I shall not be buying. Mind you perhaps the book I read was a freebie, and then I cannot complain too much, but I can complain about the story which was nothing very interesting. I.e. the two agents tied to a post in a canal in Venise, the tied is coming in. When the water reaches her mouth she remembers that she has tied a knife to her ankle... as I said PLEASE!!!

Vendetta by Jack McSporran was a fun, action-packed adventure. The settings were described in rich detail, which allowed me to insert myself into every scene. The protagonist, Maggie Black, was a confident, strong woman, and I look forward to following her adventures in future books.

One of my favorite lines from the story: "... Maggie considered how it would impact negotiations if she stabbed him with her fork."

Well done, Jack McSporran.

Excellent Book !!! High hopes for an equally excellent series.

Jack McSporran has a very smooth and "easy-to-read" writing style. A very good mix of character development, action and interesting attention to detail without slowing the narrative down.

Definitely one of better Espionage/Black Ops books that have come out in recent times. Believable characters and realistic plot lines.

Definitely looking forward to the rest of the series as they come out......

I loved that this was an action packed, fast paced book with a lady as the lead character. Her and her team work to take out the bad guys as needed. While she is tough and can do her job just like any man can, she can still show her feminine side and want to have a life outside of her job. That is not an easy thing for her with her job duties, but she still tries to find the time to spend with her significant other, and that leads to issues all it's own.

This book was hard to put down.

Action from the beginning to end.

Maggie Black is a Bad A _ _ and I love it.
I was reading books in alphabetical order---but I stopped to read the next book which is titled The Witness and I am already on chapter 3.

I like the way the writer describes the city that she is in.

I knew who the baddie was right away---which did not spoil the story.

Yes I am a Maggie Black fan.

If you're keen on cliched writing, hackneyed plots, shallow characters, and the relentless use of greengrocers' apostrophes and dangling modifiers, then you'll love this. If you have even a smidgin of taste, or any feeling for the English language, best to steer clear. I'm not sure what to do with my copy; I hate the idea of burning it or throwing it in the bin, but giving it to a charity shop strikes me as being deeply uncharitable.

This fast paced mystery was a quick read while I waited today. Maggie is a trained operative for the British government. This story finds her working a case in Venice, complete with mobsters and chase scenes and a love angle. The characters are all quite likable and even believable. I look forward yo reading the next.

This book has all the ingredients: interesting characters, suspenseful plot, good writing, and an exotic locale. Maggie Black is an assassin working for a top secret British organization. We meet her as she completes a job and is called in for another. The only thing that keeps me from rating this book higher is some of the actions and events seem just a little too much over the top.

Fun read; sometimes unbelievable; e.g., Maggie’s shooting ability while riding fast on a motorcycle and other exploits. Oh, and the author needs to brush up on boating terms - the front is the bow, the back is the stern, accelerator vs. throttle, gears, etc. Still it was exciting and fun to read. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

The story was good, interesting plot and exciting action. However, this book is in desperate need of an editor. The spelling and grammatical errors are rampant and very distracting, and the writing could be more polished overall.
