The Vale of Three Wolves: Elements of Wrath Online, Book 2
Written by: J.A. Cipriano, J.B. Garner
Narrated by: Joe Hempel
This is an audible book I requested and the review is voluntary.
I haven't read the first book but I didn't feel lost. The book caught me up well. This book was a none stop action and full of creatures and suspense. Max and Kayla MUST finish this trial within the time limit or they lose their characters. Max and Kayla also are growing in strength, togetherness, and maybe more. Meanwhile, in real life, there are challenges there that both have to work at.
The narrator was awesome with the many voices, especially with Max's sister that has a mechanical voice, great! The narrator really increased the tension, excitement, and passion into the story!

This was a solid entry into the LitRPG genre.
A failing for me was... the first half of the book. Pretty dry, didn't really care about much going on, didn't care for the game world OR the real world.
However, in the second half, I can't analyse what or why, but I started enjoying the read.
Personally, I don't much care for stats and the way most litrpgs do combat, and I believe that if you do enjoy those things, then the first half of the of the book would be perfectly palatable.

I really liked the idea of the ingame filter, that was a nice touch, and I totally want to steal it for all future books of mine.

One minor niggle for the second half was the real life side of it. Now, I actually liked what was going on in the real world, no issues with that, but the whole "Your charity should keep doing things for me for free because wahh wahh wahh" didn't sit well with me. The main characters are guilting a charity? m8 wot? Weird.

Verdict: If you like LitRPG, read this book!

It was Meh

[MINOR SPOILERS]

This book can be summed up in one word, meh. Nothing happens that won't be covered in the third book. We already knew Kayla and Shale will get closer, we end up bumping into Crysta offline and finding out what happened to her Promised, as for every other problem that wasn't solved in book 1… they were all left dangling with no progress whatsoever. So if you were hoping that more money was made, rivals would appear, deals would be made, or heck the arm being finished… nothing.

The whole book is minor subplot so Kayla and Shale get to make out and be really in love instead of just mildly obsessed with each other. Great. Everything that happens in this book can be summed up in book 3 in a paragraph or two and the stuff that can't, like the new gems, will probably be covered in several pages in book 3 next time he fiddles with his gems.

If you have time to waste, go ahead and read this book. I have lots of time and found myself falling asleep constantly during this book. So if you want to skip this book that's fine because you're literally missing nothing that won't be in Book 3, nothing is resolved minus the first real kiss. My review messed up and deleted itself 3 times but I kept trying to post it despite having to rewrite it over and over because I wish I had known before wasting my time reading this book! Like book one had pacing and tension problems but this one just expounds on them times ten.

On the plus side, no real typos or grammatical issues. Which was nice for this genre.

I have to say that the Vale of Three Wolves is everything that a squeal should be in a series with only a few small diversions.

Overall, the story picks up and develops every character from the first minus one and continues without missing a beat in a logical way. The real life and in game developments by Max are believable and hooked me from the start in a way the first book didn't. Whether it was the fact he was already established or not, I found myself not caring why. The major problems that I had with the first book were mostly dealt with in this volume. My only real disbelief was the hero speech made in the Vale by Max, but it was easily brushed aside. I enjoyed seeing him grow as a character into a leader and start to stand up for himself and those around him. More importantly, there isn't a real cliffhanger, which is something I've come to enjoy in a series. Yes, there are lingering wants at the end, but it's wrapped up in such a way that I can wait for later this year.

Despite being almost 400 pages, I blew through it in the span of five and a half hours. At first, I thought that it was a short story to tide me over until Crystalfire Keep in what I assume will be the fall. When a story can flow like that, your hopes really only go up for the next in the series. I, for one, cannot wait for the next section of the story. I'm curious to see where this pair will continue to go with the story.

Whether you use Kindle's lending or buy it, if you liked the first one, you'll love the second one all that much more.

Max and Kayla are back in Elementalis and their budding friendship hits its first hurdle. The AI filter in the game protects the gamers from identity theft, but it also prevents them from forming more meaningful relationships. Luckily there's a rare quest for the Ring of Promise, an artifact that allows two players to reveal more about themselves to each other, if they can pass through the trials. Max and Kayla embark on the quest, but they face the deletion of their characters if they lose.

This is book two in the Elements of Wrath Online, a series that has impressed me so far! The story just flows, and I was hooked through the whole thing. To say this sequel is about the quest for the Ring of Promise oversimplifies what it is. Max and Kayla are fighting not only the enemies in game, but their own doubts and insecurities about their friendship.

As always, I loved the glimpses we got of real life. The fact that Max is fighting in game to earn money to help with medical expenses makes his struggle more important than just leveling up. We also get glimpses of the future in the 2300s after climate change and limited resources altered the real world that are interesting.

The narration was awesome, it fit the tone of the book perfectly. Joe Hempel performed subtle character voices that never pulled me out of the story. I requested a copy of the audiobook, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review. I can't wait for the assault on Crystalfire Keep!

The second book in a LitRPG series that was a good read. It switched from real to the game but was easy to follow. Found myself rooting for Max in both "stories" (live and the game). Although heavy in gaming speak it was easy to follow the gaming aspect even though I am not a gamer. I received a free copy and I honestly enjoyed the story as it was well written in the LitRPG style and the light romance interesting. Some scenes were a bit funny too.

Max and Kayla embark on an epic journey, no one has ever been able to accomplish. In order to return back to the gaming world in whence they came, they need to complete the trials and defeat the enemies of the pristine holy land. Subsequently, there is a time limit and if they do not meet the objectives they could lose their chance and characters as well.

So, this is more of a romance book more I prefer. While The Vale of Three Wolves is certainly a fitting title, this book better fits the 'Ring of Promise' than the first, as it's the entire plot of this book. Still, the writing and world are solid enough, so while my enjoyment of this book is around 2 stars, I gave it 3 as someone more into romance would probably enjoy it.

My third read from authors J.B. Garner & J.A. Cipriano and the second in the Elements of Wrath Online Series. Very enjoyable read, especially for fans of FRP and so much more, as good as the first book was this is even better. So good I can't wait to delve into the next book in the series. I especially enjoyed the narrative talents of Joe Hempel.

Can't wait for the next one.

I don't want to wait to see what happens to Kayla and Max. I never thought I would get hooked on what a lot of people would say was a kids book. The real life in this book is also an escape for the reader.

Nicely Done

A nicely crafted and edited sequel to the first book, focused this time almost exclusively on Shale and Kayla. We get to see gaming mixed with some romance, and we also get a closer look at the players behind them. Recommended.

One sitting read

This flows easily and swiftly from the previous novel. Max's growth and the growing bond between him and Kayla are engrossing. Excuse me now as my legs have fallen asleep as I have not moved since picking this up.

I can't help but feel that this should have been written and marketed as a young adult series and that there was a missed opportunity there. It seems like a perfect fit. Either way, another good installment and it does a decent job of playing with the genre's tropes.
