Abigale Tate, 24, has lost her father and husband in the Civil War, and now General Sherman is about to invade Savannah. She feels despondent and cynical. She attends a black church and is enthralled by the reverend, a free colored man. They have a furtive affair, which ends when she meets a Yankee major. Along the way she is beset by a teenage sister who has no boundaries in seeking love, a stalking German immigrant, and an outlaw brother who is hunted by the very man she hopes to marry.
There are a lot of type os. There is misspelled words. Seems the family wasn't portrayed as happy the son came home. They didn't seem upset when he died. I liked the main character at first but then found some bigotry. The characters not very developed.
Very interesting read . The Tate-Gordan family, intriguing. Also Polly and Reverend Simms. The brother misguided mixed up feelings even reflected in today's Society in some parts of our Country today.
A story based on characters living in the confederate part of the US during the Civil War, toward the end of the war. The novel intertwined factual events and people into the storyline.
