First day of school. No problem, right? Not quite. Not when school is the Ardent Magic & Alchemy Academy. And you’re a witch. And black magic is forbidden, but it’s the only thing that will save you from a wizard who wants to see you dead.
So this book started out slow, it wasn’t lacking imagination just maybe too much. It drug the story out. I pushed through and continued on and I’m glad I did! At about 70% it got GOOD and it just continued from there! Looking forward to reading the next book.
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring down a lot)
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see 3* differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-) ------------
First time read the author's work?: No (I prefer her Mercy series.)
This was a good read. Wasnt quite what i expected, when i see in the title Academy etc i hope that it talks about what they learn about magic and the ins and outs..what magic feels like etc interactions with other students tests etc but it wasnt like that at all. Have no idea why the title even has the word "Hexing" on it..no one is ever hexed..& dont believe that word even exists in the book, and the topic isnt even mentioned? Bit of a click bait name. Its also told from 3 different viewpoints. It started off ok, but somehow i felt it went downhill a bit..and for some reason i just dont like the main female character. Also found it annoying that when things go wrong, in this prestigious academy..theres not experiences people or leaders around to help..its just a bit sketchy. However have got book 2 in hopes it improves.
Typical magic academy adventure and romance. Two young men and one young woman are thrown together to fight a ruthless enemy who strikes before they are ready. I would have preferred more bonding time and more of the academy routine before we got to the battles. The story continues in a sequel. Typos: Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy! Words and punctuation are haphazardly slapped into print with no attempt at proofreading. There are random extra and missing words and letters;, missing and extra commas, periods, and apostrophes; commas used as periods; and incorrect capitalization of proper nouns. Lay is used for lie, was for were, phased for fazed, struck for strike, flooded for flooding, back for aback, instance for instant.
This was a good story. The characters were given backgrounds and I enjoyed reading their interactions. It had a good plot and was well paced, although I did feel it rushed into the ending a bit. I would've liked to read more about their training and see the relationships develop more before rushing to the climax of the story. I also felt like 21 was a bit old to be just starting training. 18 would have made more sense. If I'd had the next book though I would have gone straight into it.
I would've liked to give it 4 stars. But I kept getting thrown out of the story by all the typos and grammatical errors. There were places where the author started writing a sentence and then changed the structure halfway through but didn't delete what she'd already written. So then I'd get distracted figuring out what she was trying to say.
So very many typos and spelling and grammar and sentence errors. Normally I'd take off 1 star for typos etc, but this just had so many that I had to take off 2 stars. Such a shame as the story really had potential.
If you can't afford to pay a proof-reader at least use Grammarly. Even the free version would have picked up most of the errors in this book.
How I rate the books (the review below): 5 stars - "oh my gosh... Can't stop reading. Just one more chapter. Don't want this to end." I am going to buy another book even if I am frugal. 4 stars - I am going to read another book but there was something missing in it. Still really good. 3 stars - it's okay. I maybe consider to read another book of the series or from this author. 2 stars - the only reason I didn't stop reading is because of OCD I diagnosed to myself. It was hard to finish it. It was not good. 1 star - even my OCD didn't help me to finish the book (that's rear)
I truly didn't expect this book to be good (the book cover weren't appealing and I do judge book by its cover). But because it has only 100 pages, I dig in and oh my... yes!! It was a delight to read it. The main character out of their teens and there is no too much drama. The plot goes smoothly and it's easy to read. I did have annoyance about the meeting of Rori and Brogan but I besides that it was I interesting read.
P.S. I just checked the cover again and if the main character is frost user, why on the cover we see fire?

Very easy to read. Not many characters and actually not much action but it all works! I will read book 2 and probably 3. Never been much for magic but it was interesting. It is always interesting to see how parents screw everything up for their children. Poor darlings left to fend for themselves...But magic solves everything. Read this book.
I quite enjoyed this, I personally don't read this sub genre quite often but I am actually looking forward to reading the reset of the trilogy and seeing how the characters grow and build the relationship between the three main characters. I also enjoy that we get the story from all three of their perspectives and get to really know them and find out their back stories.
A fun read with an exciting world and characters. It was fun, fast paced, and I enjoyed it. It was a short book but still managed to unpack a lot throughout the story I loved the three main characters and it made me want to read the next one. It did have some grammatical and needed some editing but it was still excellent.

I really like the story in this series. It reminds me of a show I was watching that ended after 5 seasons so I’m excited to see what is next! The characters and storyline keep you wanting more. I love the variety of supernaturals and the mixture of fighting and romance. There is some really intense moments and funny ones too. Makes for a great story!!
Wasnt sure what to expect but was completely surprised by how much i came to like this book. Its unique an interesting. A different take on magic that was fresh an easy to follow!!! On to book #2 now!!!
It’s an interesting story, but the plot moved too erratically. I didn’t feel like the characters were developed very much other than Chas (maybe) and I didn’t think any of the characters were very likable. Plus there were so many typos and grammatical errors which was a turn off.
It was so good I couldn’t put it down. I read all day! I loved the story and the characters. They were colorful and diverse. Meeting them was a pleasure. I loved the magic in the book and the diversity in the magic.
Believable characters, lots of action and intrigue. A girl trying to understand her new world and th power within her, two boys struggling to find themselves amidst a legacy both are afraid of failing to live up too. Well written.
Great book! Just wish it was all in one instead of a series ! Don't know when the next one will be free or cheap enough to buy. The characters are good and keep you interested.
Great YA book fantasy book. It was a quick read. Three YA meet up at a magic training center and discover they have all sorts of abilities. I enjoyed it.
If you like magic, fantasy, romance and mystery you will enjoy this book. How a girl who doesn't master her strong magic at the beginning begin with the help of 2 men the strongest magician.
