Legacy #4

Quinn's Quest

Rate this book

Bethany escapes a crazy doctor’s laboratory, but she’s unable to help Chrissten, the other woman kept captive there. How can she explain to the authorities that during the escape Chrissten shifted into a wolf, and she was kidnapped by the doctor in the first place because she might be part werewolf? Desperate for help and guilt-ridden for leaving Chrissten, her only hope is to find the woman’s twin brother.

Quinn has been searching for his missing sister without a single clue, until a phone call from a stranger rekindles his hope. Something sparks between Quinn and Bethany when they meet, but he doesn’t think he’ll be a good mate for anyone, let alone someone as gentle as Bethany. He’ll help her through the heat cycle she’s going into, but he can’t offer her a future. Of course, fate and biology might have other ideas…

Each book in the Legacy series is a standalone story that can be enjoyed out of order.

Quinn's Quest to save his sister gets derailed by a female in 'heat'.

To be fair, it well may be that I'd have liked Quinn's Quest better if I'd have read any of the other preceding books in the series - because the supporting characters seem interesting and apparently leading man Quinn himself was an appealing side character in previous books and of course if I had read the earlier books, I'd have been happy to see the generous sprinkling of cameos of past pairs.

But I then again I am thinking maybe not, since the story really gets shuttled to the side for all of the sex breaks, and it really seemed to me that considering the situations of the leads Quinn and Bethany, even with Bethany's mating heat coming on, that sex wouldn't have occupied so much of the time that should have been spent on the 'quest' for Quinn's sister Christten.

But the real nail in the coffin for me - and I am a total nut about shape shifter romances - was that I really didn't care for Walters' werewolf mythos: female weres-to-be go into heat and don't actually get to 'take their wolf' unless they are mated by being claimed doggie-style - they can do it it all they want from the front without forming the bond, WTH...? If the female decides to ride out the sexual agony of the mating heat and not accept a claim, she has to wait a year until her next heat but males don't need to be mated to be able to turn wolf - how does that make sense? Oh and werewolves don't just have one destined mate, so all the wolf guys can compete for the female's attentions - which would be okay if more effort is dedicated to developing a love, instead of lust, connection between the leads.

I did finish Quinn's Quest - it allowed me to check off my "Q" for my 2012 A to Z title challenge - but the most telling thing about my reaction to the story is that even being a shifter nut and the kind of person who 'has' to read every book in a series, I am not dying to go back and read the earlier books in the series (though from other reviewers' comments, it sounds like the other books were much better) or to find out what happens between Hank and Chrissten (I might have been tempted though if the mysterious vampire guy was in line to be Chrissten's mate).

Quinn Lawton, half-breed werewolf raised by his human mother, has spent the last eighteen months searching for his kidnapped twin sister. With the secret help of his younger human half-brother (who's a computer genius), he infiltrated the ranks of the Hunters, human men intent on exterminating all werewolves, who he believes have information about his sister's kidnappers. Along the way, he discovered the werewolf who is likely his father, Donovan Brody (a member of James LeVeau's pack), who never knew he existed. Now he's betrayed those Hunters, who love nothing more than vengeance.

Awesome premise for a book, right?

N.J. Walters has been feeding us tempting snippets of Quinn's story over the past two Legacy series books, and I was eager to learn more about this intriguing character. It seemed obvious to me that Quinn's Quest would be the search for his missing sister, hopefully involving forging a relationship with his newly discovered (likely) father, ending with their happy family reunion. Of course some Strikers would be involved, for this is exactly the sort of heroic rescue attempt they were destined to participate in. And I was thrilled to find Quinn working with Chicago's new Haven pack, pleased that more of Isaiah and Meredith's story would be involved.

I read this book in less than twenty-four hours, and it was one of the most frustrating reads of my life. Warning: the rest of this review is full of massive spoilers.

Quinn's quest for his sister is never resolved! Three times he "just" misses her, arriving days, hours, or even minutes too late. This fascinating man with such a compelling backstory fails utterly at the one thing he was supposed to do. If you call a book "Quinn's Quest", it seems to me he ought to complete the damn quest. But to add salt to the wound, we realize by the end that this entire novel is nothing more than a setup for the next one, "Finding Chrissten" (don't get me started on the spelling of that name), where it seems pretty apparent that Quinn isn't gonna be the fella to rescue his sister - Hank is.

Argh!

Instead, Quinn spends his time (and far too much of the book) repeatedly screwing a complete stranger (Bethany) who just escaped the same whack-job kidnapper who's holding his sister, for the sole reason that she's a female going into heat the first time. And despite the fact these two NEVER talk about anything significant or substantial (I'm willing to bet neither of them even know the other's last name), they discover they are in lurrve and soulmates or whatever. In the span of less than a week. Ahem. Unfortunately along the way, Quinn's character became that "hero" I dislike most: violently possessive, obsessively territorial, and convinced he has to protect his precious woman from his bad self, emotionally mistreating her until the very end when he realizes he's being an ass but still deserves to be happy in love.

Bethany, his love interest, is no better. A fellow half-breed werewolf who has no clue what she was until just DAYS ago, the potential for their relationship was firecracker explosive. Walters has already prepared us for how intense the "heat" period is for females, so I get that Bethany was, for a couple of days, a slave to her libido (except Meredith managed to survive years of it, and she was there to help Bethany), and Quinn, as a male werewolf, was "powerless" to resist her perfumy wiles (um, how about you leave the room for a few days, which worked for the other four guys in the house?). But she manages to completely bury whatever trauma she might realistically feel regarding her kidnapping and seems pretty content to play a confused doormat, tolerating Quinn's dumbass treatment of her, caught in the thrall of paranormal-infatuation/soulmate-destiny-found bullshit. In short: the kind of romance heroine I despise.

The story spins its wheels despite an action-packed beginning. The following plot loop repeats several times: Damek the vampire arrives at Haven after closing, with or without pertinent information about Chris' whereabouts, then Quinn spends the rest of the night having sex with Bethany until he and his helpers go out and search for Chris the following day, come up empty, and return to Haven. Talk about phoning it in.

I weep for the wasted potential in this book. Quinn was such an awesome secondary character, I was really looking forward to him being the central focus of a novel, but he turned out to be an idiot. A half-breed bonding with his unknown father, his werewolf heritage (what was his childhood like?), surely would have been fraught with lovely emotion and tension, but this aspect was completely ignored: Donovan Brody wasn't involved in the search for his daughter, never even merited a mention, much less a measly phone call. Quinn's a covert operative recently discovered as a traitor to the Hunter cause, on the run for his life as well as in search of his lost sister - the drama could have been an edge-of-the-seat ride to the end, but nary a single Hunter spat his tabaccy and swore in their direction. The idea of two half-breed werewolves, raised without the comfort and security of pack community, helping each other through a traumatic period in their young lives was a compelling one. Too bad Walters totally dropped the ball and made it all about hormones and sex scenes utterly lacking in real emotional investment. Even the introduction of a whole new threat to werewolf society - a mad scientist who wants to breed his own race of werewolves and genetically enhance himself into one - was a throwaway plot device at best.

I'll read the next book, "Finding Chrissten" (slated release in May 2012) because I do want to see the poor girl rescued. Hopefully Hank can redeem the series, because "Quinn's Quest" was a bust.

I'm frustrated because not much happens in this book beside hot sex. The hero repeats himself he's not good enough for the heroine because he killed nasty people and he let his sister be kidnapped.
There's not much talk about the scientist who kidnapped the heroine and experimented on her. I hope the next is better on this point.

I was completely invested in making sure these two admit their feeling to each other! Everyone around them saw them connect immediately, his wolf knew it, but self-doubt plagued them at every turn. It isn’t that they didn’t have valid reasons for their feelings, but I was so happy when they finally worked things out <3

Bethany Morris had no idea why she’d been kidnapped and at the mercy of an evilly insane doctor and a henchman her equally insane but not evil roommate who’d also been kidnapped and had been held much longer. Chrissten maintains they’re shifters and ensures Bethany memorize her twin, Quinn Lawson’s number, insisting she call if she’s able to escape.

When Bethany does escape, she reaches Quinn at Haven and tells him all she knows. Exhausted, she’s overwhelmed with the mutual pull toward Quinn, the male attention from his Chicago packmates and this world I’d fallen into. The women pull Bethany aside to explain going into heat and the basics of shifter life while feeding and finding clothing for her.

Meanwhile, Bethany and Quinn find their way to mating but not communicating as well as they should. While not part of Isiah’s pack but definitely Quinn’s friends, they were both surprised how willing they all were to help find Chrissten. Following leads and help from a vampire ally, the pack comes close but miss Chrissten twice as her suffering continues but Hank is now enchanted by her scent.

Good story idea but there was too much sex. It was as if Bethany and Quinn had no control. It felt forced. Also the backstory should have concluded in the first story or at least moved further…mainly we get people eating, sitting around talking, being in awe of a vampire who seems to do nothing and the endless bouts of sex within a few hours of knowing each other. Part of me wants to find out more about the vamp and what happens to chrissten but probably won’t.

Great story

I really enjoyed duetting to know the smaller pack at Haven. Quinn fought his feelings for Bethany. Then things were getting hard for her to handle. He had to make and choice and he still messed it up until she set him straight. Can’t wait to read book 5.

I feel like I was waiting forever for this book to come out. Yesterday while roaming around on the Facebook, I was stalking looking at N.J. Walters' posts and saw that Quinn's Quest was released the day before and I didn't pre-order it! *gasp* I went right on and purchased it to my faithful Kindle (my second one in under 18 months because I burnt the other one out from reading so much. Lol.) and got to reading that day. I just finished it this morning and generally I don't write reviews right after I read books but I felt I just had to get down everything I was feeling with this book.

We were introduced to Quinn in the previous book, Legacy Found. Not exactly knowing if he was on the up and up, we found that he was a good person with a determination to do anything to find his twin sister Chrissten. In Quinn's Quest, we get a more in depth look at sexy beast (pun intended) he really is. Fully blaming himself for Chrissten's kidnapping, he feels it is up to him to get her back. After looking so long and not finding anything, he turns to the Haven pack that has graciously offered to help. It is all going well when Damek (the creepy ass vampire) agrees to help in the search, until he gets a early morning phone call from someone claiming to see his sister alive. He can't help but feel some of the hope that was extinguished come racing to the forefront. And that's not all that's at the forefront. One look at the woman who called and the only thing he can think of is to mark her as his own.

Bethany narrowly escaped her kidnappers. Determined to help rescue the woman, Chrissten, who was kidnapped before she was picked up, she calls Chrissten's twin brother, Quinn for help. At the sound of his voice on the phone, she can't help but feel a strange pull towards him. Shaking the feeling off, she tells him she wants to meet him to talk about his sister. Agreeing upon Haven, her taxi pulls up and she is floored with the presence that is Quinn. She has never been extremely attracted to men but the one in front of her has her thinking she was completely wrong. Bethany fights her attraction to Quinn and tells them everything she knows. Not feeling comfortable with all the huge, brooding men around her, she instinctively stays close to Quinn. Little does she know how close they will become.

My only pet peeve was that the story is basically continued onto the next book, Finding Chrissten, with Chrissten and Hank as the couple coming together. I know that isn't a bad thing necessarily but I am impatient! Lol! I want more sexy werewolves. :( I guess I will just have to put my big girl pants on a deal with it.

I really like the Legacy series by N.J. Walters but Quinn’s Quest was not the best book of the series. It was a short read but even short reads can be amazing, this one was not. The story felt rushed. Just rushed. In my opinion, you do have to read the other books to understand this one so I won’t explain the story because it’d too complicated but basically half the time the MCs were having sex. Seriously, I was under the impression that the entire book was based on that.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a good Erotica, I actually prefer when there are sex scenes in a book but too much is TOO MUCH. Like I said, they fell instantly in love, they didn’t know each other and the first time they met, they slept together.

Once again, I have nothing against insta-love when it’s well done and not too overwhelming but here it was. I also get that this is a PNR book and that the MCs are mates BUT in the first three books of this series the MCs were also mates and their relationship was believable. The stories weren’t rushed, in Quinn’s Quest I didn’t feel any kinds of attachment to Quinn and Bethany.

Even the plot wasn’t that good. There is one yes but, once again, the story was focused on Quinn and Bethany and sex. The plot wasn’t explored enough for my tastes. I felt like N.J. wanted to be done with this story so she just rushed everything and made them fall in love in one day. Yeah, it was very confusing.

Quinn is a good MC, I mean, I loved him the first three books, I still do but, arg, his story sucked. I’m sorry but I was hoping for so much more. His character wasn’t explored at all, it was all in the surface but nothing profound. Same thing with Bethany, she’s a new character and we know almost nothing about her. I felt for Quinn but not that much. Yes, he wants to find his sister badly and yes he’s scared and sad for her BUT all of this was shadowed by Bethany and the sex.

Their relationship was based on…yes, you guessed it, SEX, I’m sorry but when they “fell in love” I didn’t understand. Like, what happened? Did I miss something?

Anyway, 2.5 stars because I still love the world N.J. created and the secondary characters were good. I love Isaiah and his little pack and Damek the big bad vampire. I’m also looking forward to read Chrissten and Hank’s story. I hope that N.J. Walters didn’t rush that one because I think Chrissten’s story needs a lot of explanations and a lot of patience on Hank’s part.

Bethany Morris has been kidnapped and is being held in a laboratory with a Doctor who is experimenting with her and a violent werewolf who takes what he wants.

Quinn Lawnton is going insane searching to find his kidnapped sister Chrissten

Bethany manages to escape her captors with the help of the woman kidnapped with her. Chrissten Lawton seizes the opportunity but unfortunately she is unable to escape so she urges Bethany to leave and find her brothers.
Quinn receives a call from a woman named Bethany who says she has seen Chrissten. Quinn finally sees hope again and convinces her to meet him only it is not only the hope of finding his sister that Bethany brings with her she is also his mate.

This is another great instalment to the Legacy series by N J Walters.

As usual this book did not disappoint. I am looking forward the Book #5. Legacy is a great series. The love between each of the characters & the acceptance of one another is what we all strive for in life. To find the perfect mate, one that you fit with on so many levels. And the willingness to fight & defend one another. This series has great action, hot sex, love, friendship & a hint of mystery.

I did like this addition to the series. My only complaint is that the sex scenes in this series seem to be getting a little repeditive to me. I did read over them quickly and didn't like all the off track thinking going on.

I am still looking forward to Chrissten's story with Hank though. I would really like a story with Craig and Dameck as a m/m couple. That would make it so their brother Craig could have a longer life span like they do.

Once I realized that this book can be called a cliff-hanger and realized that the rest of Quinn's and Chrissten's story will be completed in the next book, I realized that I liked this book a little bit more.

I realize this is a paranormal romance (heavy on the romance), but to me the romance part seemed to be rushed. This one was not my favorite of the series.

This series is losing momentum for me....it's all very cookie cutter and the plots are simplistic. I enjoy the writing style and the paranormal world, but I need a bit more depth to keep me hooked in the long run. Something like the Demonica series or the Psy/Changling series, where the storyline is less predictable. I think I'll skip ahead to the vampire books, just for a change of pace.

I love this series! I couldn't wait for Quinn's story and I wasn't disappointed. I felt bad for Michael though. Hopefully there will be his book coming soon. ;) I really hope so. In the meantime I've got Chrissten and Hank to look forward to :)

I liked this one a lot. The only bad part was that I was in a hurry to read this one. The overall story of the series is so good that it may be overshadowing the individual books. For this story the next one in the series was the goal for me more than this book.

A Search for Quinn's sister. Quinn finding Bethany and love along the way. Sex, violence, and danger. This book was great, now I can't wait to read the next book where Chris, Quinn's sister will be able to tell her story.
