Former FBI agent Garrison Kopp suspected his teenage son was in trouble, but a midnight summons to the ER after an overdose reveals the problem is more serious than he thought. Desperate to get his son away from negative influences, he asks a friend who owns rental properties for a place to stay. This isn’t how he’d planned to reconnect with the beautiful woman he’d met a few months ago, yet spending time with Samantha makes a hard time more bearable.
Vacation homeowner Samantha Messenger is happy to provide Garrison and his son a lake cabin where they can regroup. She tells herself Garrison’s call had nothing to do with the chemistry they shared and everything to do with the fact that the other rentals were booked. She helps him search for a good rehab facility and tries not to hope for more than friendship. After what she’s been through, more isn’t an option, no matter what her heart wants.
Sparks fly between them as Sam and Garrison work together to help the resistant teen. But that becomes the least of their problems when a package planted in Garrison’s car lures enemies to the idyllic cabin on the lake. With their lives—and love—on the line, can they protect all they hold dear?
Robin Patchen is a USA Today bestselling and award-winning author of Christian romantic suspense. She grew up in a small town in New Hampshire, the setting of her Nutfield Saga books, and then headed to Boston to earn a journalism degree. After college, working in marketing and public relations, she discovered how much she loathed the nine-to-five ball-and-chain. After relocating to the Southwest, she started writing her first novel while she homeschooled her three children. The novel was dreadful, but her passion for storytelling didn’t wane. Thankfully, as her children grew, so did her writing ability. Now that her kids are adults, she has more time to play with the lives of fictional heroes and heroines, wreaking havoc and working magic to give her characters happy endings. Not even the strongest people can survive without at least some help from others, but choosing to be vulnerable enough to ask is a challenge. This struggle is a recurring theme in this fast-paced, heartfelt novel.
Garrison is a loving father trying to save his adolescent son from substance abuse. To further complicate things, he has to confront his growing feelings for Sam, a woman facing demons and struggles of her own. When a dangerous situation arrives to threaten them, Garrison and Sam must learn to trust God, friends, and one another to endure.
With vivid, relatable characters, drama, suspense, and inspirational themes about faith and love, Generous Lies keeps the reader engaged on multiple levels. I highly recommend this book. Just be prepared to want to read it all in one sitting!
Wow, I just love this series. Patchen got us right back into the Hidden Truths series and this time we got to know Garrison and Sam. No problem keeping those screens scrolling! Couldn't wait to find out what was happening with Matty & his dad, too! Can't think of a thing I didn't like about it...edge of my seat kind of read :) Can't wait to find out what is next in this series! The publisher provided me with a copy of this book. All thought and comments are my own!

What kind of trouble is Aiden really in and how will he deal with it? This is book 3 in the hidden truths series and can be read as a stand along however I recommend reading them all in order because the characters appear in the others as well. This book has anxiety disorders, broken marriages, killers and drugs as a back drop. This book deals with the difficult subject of drug addiction and how if affects everyone involved . There is also a mystery about a missing package and the trouble that with the package. I love this book The author has had to deal with drug addiction in family and she has a first hand look at how it affects the families involved .She did a fantastic job in this book. I recommend all the books in this series. This book also deals with anxiety disorders and how they can cripple someone's life if they allow it. There is a love story as well but it is the main focus of the story . It also talks about ones faith and how it can get a person through anything This is a clean ,Christian book. Loved it.
This book is book 3 of Robin Patchen's "Hidden Truth" series. Though I haven't read book 2, I didn't have any trouble keeping up as this book is able to stand on its own. Having read book 1, I was familiar with several characters and learned a bit about what happened in book 2, so I would probably recommend reading these in order, but they are fine to read on their own as well.
This book is a romantic suspense, and I find the balance of those two genres to be excellent in this book as well as the others I've read of Ms. Patchen's. The romantic aspects were true-to-life - there was groundwork already laid for it - and the suspense was intense. The book touched serious social topics, such as drug abuse, parenting, anxiety disorders, and relationships in the midst of it all. I found the difficult topics to be well researched and handled well. Since this is a Christian book, it is clean -with no foul language (several characters "swore", but the word is not put in print) or explicit sex scenes, and isn't overly preachy (only one of the main characters is a Christian). The plotline was well developed as were the characters.
This book has 2 overlapping story lines that come to a head at the end. We start out with young Matty who has been trying to have a relationship with his dad. When he gets the call to meet him at the airport, he's ecstatic to get to spend some time with him. Unfortunately, his dad isn't looking for quality time, but rather an errand boy. Through a series of events, this errand gets interrupted and the consequences are grave. The other story line comes into play with Aiden, Matty's best friend. Aiden has a drug problem, but a very supportive dad. When he lands in the hospital from an overdose, his dad decides to take him away from the bad influences for a while to help him get better. Both story lines come to a head at the climax with an intense plot twist. This story has some intense scenes, some heartfelt dialogue, internal struggles, and raw emotion. The book deals with real-life issues and scenarios. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. The opinions given are my own.
Generous Lies is book three in the Hidden Truths series. It can be read as a stand alone but I was thankful I had read book 1 & 2 because I knew who the characters were and how they related to one another.
In Generous Lies the focus is on Garrison, a retired FBI agent who is trying to help his seventeen year old son overcome his drug addiction. He takes his son, Aiden, away from New York to Nutfield to stay in the vacation cabin of Samantha, a friend of his. Aiden is fighting the side effects of all of the drugs he is detoxing from. Garrison is also working to rebuild his relationship with Aiden.
Samantha owns the cabin that Garrison and Aiden are staying in. She and Garrison met when they worked on a case together and have been talking by phone since. The two have feelings for each other but are both nervous to act upon them. Samantha is fighting her own battles. On the outside she appears to have it all together but on the inside, she is a ball of anxiety fighting agoraphobia. I liked how Patchen gives us a glimpse of both addiction and anxiety disorders. We get to see them not only from the person who is suffering with the issues but from the perspective of those who love them.
Back in New York, Aiden's best friend, Matty, who is also his drug supplier, has gotten himself into trouble. He was given a package and told to deliver it, but he placed the package Garrison's trunk unbeknownst to anyone but Matty. The package is valuable and soon Matty and his family's life is in danger if they do not recover the package. That means trouble comes to Garrison and Aiden in the form of dangerous people trying to recover this package that they know nothing about. Throw Samantha in there and stakes are really high. How can Garrison get the two people he loves the most out of the dangerous situation they find themselves in?
The book really captures your attention and keeps you engaged right up until the end. It features romance, suspense and action. It is also well written, a perfect formula for a five star book.
Generous Lies is the third book in Robin Patchen’s Hidden Truth series. This book is as wonderful as the first two. I love that the mysteries in these books do not feel patterned or predictable. This third book revolves around two youth: Aiden, the son of former FBI agent Garrison Kopp, is a drug addict; Matty O’Brien, Aiden’s dealer and best friend, is thrown into a dangerous situation created by his often-absent father. As Garrison strives to get help for his son, he seeks refuge in the town where the friends he made in Hidden Truth’s second book, Twisted Lives, reside. There Samantha Messenger supports both Garrison and Aiden in their path toward healing. Little do they know that they are being tracked by Aiden’s friend Matty and his father in an effort to retrieve a package that Matty stowed in the trunk of the Kopp’s vehicle. There are some very dangerous men who are determined to take possession of this package. Generous Lies promotes hope and healing, both physical and emotional. Patchen uses this platform to let her readers know about the Author of Hope without being preachy, but with characters who demonstrate love and mercy rather than judgement and condemnation. I recommend this book and this series to mystery fans, especially those who like a little romance woven into a good mystery. I thank Robin for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review. I received no monetary compensation.
Robin Patchen quickly draws the reader into the story of two teenagers caught up in the drug scene, one an addict and the other a dealer. Grab the book and come along on an intense journey as the father of the addicted boy, Garrison Kopp, seeks to remove his son from the environment he is in and find help for him. As Garrison and his friend, Samantha Messenger, research options for rehabilitation, the information they find is not particularly encouraging. Garrison had been drawn to Samantha in the previous book in this series, so a significant part of the book is their story. I think there are two important takeaways from the story. First, the message is very clear that an addict must want help before they can get it. The outcome is typically very poor without the buy-in of the addict. Second, although there are no guarantees, the best thing any parent can do is to avoid addictive substances and habits themselves in order to set a proper example for the children and do everything reasonable to monitor their activities. Although this is not specifically stated anywhere in the story, I think it can be inferred. I recommend that parents of young children and teens read this book now and pray that you never face any of this. I received an advance copy of the book from the author. This is my honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.
Very real, intense story about fathers and their teenage sons and how far a father will go to protect his son. Then add in drugs, bad guys, anxiety disorders, panic attacks and danger and you have a story that will have you rooting for the good guys and planning against the bad guys.
Absolutely loved this story, very real to life with intriguing situations. I loved how 2 different father son stories are contrasted in the storyline. One family is made up of a loving involved father who realizes it's time to take drastic measures as his teenage son spirals out of control. In fact at one point he questions whether it is more loving to shelter his son from consequences or send him away to get help. While this teenagers best friend has a father who not only is never around but who is involved in shady deals and ends up putting his son in danger. How will these fathers maneuver the muddy waters of angry teenage sons? And on top of all that is a friend of the loving father who provides a getaway place but reveals her own issues, she suffers from panic attacks and assumes no one could love her. Could this friendship become something more or will the parenting of an angry addicted son consume all his time?
So get your copy today so you don't miss out on this story about love, sacrifice, and bravery. A quote from the book defines bravery as facing your fears.
Generous Lies by Robin Patchen Hidden Truth Series Book Three Samantha “Sam” Messenger watches as her friends marry and have families of their own. Meanwhile, she knows she'll be alone the rest of her life. She has a secret she has held close. A secret that keeps her alone. Until she met Garrison. She wanted to believe her life could be different...but knew better. She'd tell him her secret. He'd be done with her.
Garrison Kopp had a slap of reality when he got the call that his son was going to the hospital. Another slap when they told him what they found in his system from the blood work. It was time to get Aiden out of New York and away from his friends...and his mother. Nutfield seemed the perfect place. Especially since he could see Sam again.
I love this series. The author gives you the point of view from the main characters and others. Aiden's point of view showed his struggles...the battle that raged within him. I felt pulled into the story. Feeling their struggles and emotions. http://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com/...
Wow! This first book I've read by Robin Patchen makes me anxious to read the first two books in the series! The suspense is gripping, unputdownable, and ranks right up there with some of the best authors I've read.
When former FBI agent Garrison Kopp receives word that his son, Aiden, is being rushed to the emergency room, he expects to learn anything but what he does - his son took some drugs at a party and got hold of some bad acid. Already reeling from this news, he's unprepared to hear that all indications point to this not being the first time Aiden was using. In fact, Aiden has all the indicators of being an addict. Desperate to get him away from the "friends" who obviously led him astray, Garrison calls his beautiful friend Samantha and asks to rent one of her vacation cottages.
Samantha Messenger would do anything for her friends, even brand new ones like Garrison. Anything, that is, but leave the safe cocoon she's built in her home community. A trauma several years ago has trapped Sam with panic attacks any time she tries to leave town. As she gets to know Garrison better and they fall for one another, can she begin to see that the God who led her out of her terror is still there for her today?
When Aiden's best friend brings danger to their doorstep, will he fall back into addiction? Will Sam walk away to keep her cocoon intact? Will Garrison give up on both?
Robin Patchen found a way to make me see that Aiden's addiction was not just some weakness in his character. It snuck up on him and stole so many things from him including his relationship with his dad. Thank you Ms. Patchen for giving your readers a glimpse into what it might be like to parent an addict and hope for those who are that they might be able to find a way out.
Readers who love romantic suspense will devour Generous Lies. The romance is just the right amount and the suspense that swirls throughout will keep you up trying to finish "just one more chapter"! I definitely recommend this one and, while it was perfect as a standalone, I plan to go back in the near future and read the first two in the series. This one was that good!
I really enjoyed this book. It is a drama about a single father dealing with his teenage son who is addicted to drugs and has just overdosed. He is an ex FBI Agent but is not prepared for this task. He turns to a friend he met a few months ago when he helped on a kidnapping case of a small child. The woman has rental cabins on a lake a few states away and agreed to help him. These two have been forming a friendship over the months by phone. She is willing to help but has problems of her own. Big problems...like agoraphobia and anxiety attacks. You would think this would be enough drama but the teenage son’s best friend and drug dealer has hidden a package in the ex FBI Agent’s car. This package has to be delivered by a certain time or lives have been threatened. This package is wanted by two factions of really bad men and things get really tense. You really need to read this book and enjoy the story.
This is book three in Robin Patchen's "Hidden Truth" series. They are all good! One of the things I love about this one is that it tackles the very timely - and scary for parents - issue of teenage drug addiction. Opioid addiction is on the news every night. People are dealing with this all across the country and all across the economic spectrum. Patchen does a very credible job of exploring how it can affect a family.
Aside from that important issue, the story is engaging from the start, picking up from the previous book. Any of these can be stand alone stories, but I recommend reading them in order. Garrison and Sam are introduced in the previous books, but in "Generous Lies" it's their story. We liked them before, but now we really get to know them. And they don't disappoint! No spoilers here but I highly recommend reading the whole series.
A stand-alone novel, Book 3 is based a secondary character introduced in Book 2.
For those who enjoy a clean romantic suspense will love this, and those who don’t mind not having ‘sexy scenes’ will love it too.
Garrison first meets Sam in Twisted Lies. They meet again when Garrison reaches out to Sam asking if there is cabin available to rent so he can concentrate on his son and help him through his addiction and problems. They move into the cabin by the lake but trouble soon follows.
Fast-paced, full of emotion, suspense, excellent characters and romance ensure this thrilling read is captivating to the end. This series just gets better.
I look forward to reading Innocent Lies the next book in the Hidden Truth series.
Highly recommend.
***I was offered this book in exchange for an honest review. These are my thoughts on the novel***
Suspenseful story, with a romantic addition Robin Patchen is a great writer of Christian suspense and romance. This book is about a father, Garrison Kopp, who decides he needs to do something drastic to get his son’s attention, and help him get off of the drugs he is taking, which were gradually stealing his son’s life. He calls a friend, Samantha, (who he wants to get better acquainted with) and asks if she has a cabin available; then he takes his son, Adrian, out of state, reducing contact with and calls to his friends. An additional plot weaves in and out of this, involving others in a potentially deadly situation. This book is one that is difficult to stop reading—you will likely be so wrapped up in the story, you won’t want to stop reading! Be sure to get a copy, and find out, for yourself. You won’t be sorry!
Some of this story can be relatable within families. Addiction destroys relationships in every aspect of life and is evermore prominent in society today. In this book Robin builds on her continued series with the same familiar characters but emphasizes the newly building relationship between Garrison and Samantha. Both have problems that are effecting their daily lives but can't seem to fix these alone. As Garrison leans on Sam for help with his son and his newly found out addiction, Sam eventually shares her grief with anxiety. What makes this book thrilling is along the way these three get pulled into a recovery effort, of the stolen kind, that leaves dead bodies in its wake. Will Garrison and Sam escape with their lives or suffer the consequences to save those they love. You have to read this book to find out!!!
When former FBI agent Garrison Kopp's teenaged son is found to have a drug addiction, he's desperate to find help for him. But what if his son doesn't want to be helped? Garrison feels it'd be better to travel out of town with his son--the further son Aiden is from his friends and connections, perhaps the easier it'll be to overcome the drug addiction. But one of Aiden's friends has hidden something in Garrison's car--and the rest is edge-of-your seat suspense to the end! There's murder, kidnapping, and danger with a developing romance between Garrison and his friend Samantha. An exciting read with relatable characters. I found the struggles of dealing with a child who's addicted to drugs realistically and honestly portrayed as well. I highly recommend this book--and this entire series!

GENEROUS LIES by Robin Patchen. Hidden Truths 3 Garrison needed help and seclusion with his son Aiiden to give him time to heal. He wanted to see Samantha also, been five months. His ex wife, Aiden mother, loved her son, but loved her drugs more. He had six months, before he turned eighteen. Garrison would like a grown up to tell him what to do for his son. His son was soon be a man, could they find a way thru this and be close afterwards. A friend of Aiden,, Matty was given a package, that he hid, which brought additional trouble for Garrison and Aiden. Powerful story of the path to get a loved one away from drugs, and finding a new purpose in life . Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
I keep waiting for the action to die down and this series to get boring or repetitive but it doesn't happen. We are now told the story of Aiden's addiction and battles and how they draw in and bring him and his father closer but jeopardize lives and more. When Garrison takes Aiden away from home and Sam helps they have no idea what they are in for because nothing is simple with this group of friends. And friends they are, helping supporting and sharing.
Another great story in the series. Yes they are standalones but they are so much more. They can be read out of order but don't. Enjoy them from the beginning and meet each of the characters and how they came to be. You will be glad you did. Awesome series that just keeps getting better.
Robin Patchen did it again in a fast-paced, riveting clean suspense, with a bit of romance in there to sweeten it up. Stories with teenagers, parties, drugs, cars, police and fear are probably a part of most family's lives, whether in the immediate family or extended families, and so this story becomes very relevant and is great clean reading for any age. I would have liked to learn a little more about how the rehab experience worked out for Garrison's son in the end, and also how the romance worked out between Garrison and Sam, and was surprised when the story ended. I enjoyed the first three books in this series and looking forward to reading Innocent Lies, Book 4.
Garrison, Sam, and Aiden, the perfect family. I love seeing them interact with each other. Even though Aiden is an addict, he's still very loveable. Sam is a solid rock for both Garrison and Sudan's foundation. And they kept her sane. This story was a bit long, and slow. But it certainly picked up around the end. I like all the actions that occur at the end. Well done Sam and Garrison. Looking forward to reading Innocent Lies book 4. Even though I like all the action during the end. The ending O felt was lacking full closure. I wanted to know that Aiden completed Rehab. And Garrison and Sam finally got together and got married. Too many open ending for my taste. A nice Epilogue 2 to 3 yrs later would have been nice.
I am a fan of Robin Patchen's writing and this book is another one of my favorites. It is filled with descriptions that help you actually see the town and the cabins by the lake; the characters are flawed and still wonderful works in progress and this particular book deals with addition. I found this honest and helpful - could appreciate the father wanting to trust his son and yet having to deal with the lies that he is told. There is suspense and lots of drama resulting from poor choices made by another teen - times where it is impossible to put the book down ... yet, not wanting it to end. I also love that characters from previous books are included as they continue to care about and help one another but the book can be read alone.
Generous Lies was a great book. There was action, love, healing, and redemption. If you're a parent, expect to have some tears.
I feel like Robin did a wonderful job showing the struggle of addiction and giving the reader a glimpse into the minds of all those involved. Seeing the internal battle that Garrison had as a parent trying to fight for his child and just not knowing what was the right decision or action was heartbreaking and I could easily put myself in his shoes as a parent.
I loved seeing Sam grow and overcome some of her struggles. It was also nice to see that while the main characters (in particular Sam) thought they had been hiding their issues, friends knew there was something wrong all along.
Garrison Kopp, former FBI, stepped away from that jog to be closer to his family. His marriage failed and he was distant to his son Aiden. Aiden is addicted to pain killers and alcohol and needs help. Aiden's friend, Matty, gets a package from his father to deliver. On his way home he stops at a party and with police raiding the party, he hides the package in the trunk of his friends car. A cabin retreat for Garrison and Aiden, a frantic search for the car to find the package by several unsavory people. This is a great story line that takes you in different directions that meet in the end. A exciting and heart pounding conclusion.
Former FBI agent Garrison Kopp suspected his teenage son was in trouble, but it's more serious than he thought. Desperate to get his son away from negative influences, he asks a beautiful and kind new friend (Samantha Messenger) who owns a lake cabin for a place to stay. She’ll help, as long as she doesn’t have to risk anything. Sparks fly as they try to help the teenager.
I sure can identify with this story. I have grown kids that haven't made good choices. I've said it many times, "It's easier to take care of toddlers than grown kids."
Exciting plot. Realistic characters. Wonderful ending. On to the next book in this series.
Still, as always, the consummate writer, Robin once again enthralls us with her continuation of her Hidden Truth series. She draws us into her stories as if we are among the characters and weaves the story around us so that even when we finish reading we continue to think of the plot, the characters, and the place. I am left hoping that there are more books to come in this series. Robin is able to bring God and romance into a book in an inspiring and all encompassing way. Once again, a must read and well deserving of five thumbs up!
This book was captivating. It explores the complexities of relationships... families, friends, and romantic--broken relationships, new relationships, becoming vulnerable, having your greatest fears exposed, feeling helpless, feeling hopeful, having trust broken, so many realistic issues we deal with. Robin focuses on the element of strong addiction, which severely affects every person who comes near the addict. Add a serious crime to the mix--from where there is no escape--and it's a thoroughly riveting book!
