DNF 70%. Honestly, I would have at least finished it, but I just discovered this is a TRILOGY and the book has barely enough plot to cover the 200 pages in THIS book, let alone 3 full books and then a fourth about the brother!
Usually in these "enemies to lovers" books, both characters act equally horrible to each other and it's pretty clear that they just both rub each other wrong. But in this one, I completely understood *why* Dash (The MMC) didn't like the heroine.
Like I SHOULD have felt legitimately sorry for her, her boyfriend was a total ass to her, but then like....I got his point. She DID think she was better than everyone else and that her stuff was more important.
The heroine was that special brand of 2017
annoying. The kind where she gets to be immature, never reflects on herself or her behavior, never apologizes, yet the author lets her get away with it and somehow makes it the Hero's fault. 🙄
Dash was the only person worth reading about in this book. The heroine didn't like him because he was the only one to ever call her on her shit. (aside from her horrible ex) He was the only one willing to communicate and act like an adult. SHE kissed him first and initiated everything, then the next morning, even though it was far from his ideal scenario, he acted like an adult while she was a being lunatic. I think the author was trying to make it humorous, but instead it was straight up cringey. It's like "high-strung" was her whole personality and the author REALLY wanted you to know it, so she beat you and poor Dash over the head with it constantly. It's a shame because it took what could have been an interesting character and a good storyline and made it unbearable to keep reading.
Still, I planned to stick it out to the end until I learned there were 3 books of them together and then I just couldn't handle the heroine that long since it was clear she wasn't going to get a character arc and instead was going to double down on the heroine's insufferable immaturity. It's too bad because the sex was hot, mainly because it was the only time she wasn't bitching about something or playing an immature game.
