Evangeline of the Bayou: A Southern Gothic Middle Grade Adventure of Haunt Hunting for Children

Rate this book
A standout middle grade debut with a sassy, memorable heroine and a charming Southern feel, perfect for fans of Kate DiCamillo and Natalie Lloyd.

Twelve-year-old haunt huntress apprentice Evangeline Clement spends her days and nights studying the ways of folk magic, honing her monster-hunting skills while pursuing local bayou banshees and Johnny revenants.

With her animal familiar sure to make itself known any day now, the only thing left to do is prove to the council that she has heart. Then she will finally be declared a true haunt huntress, worthy to follow in the footsteps of her long line of female ancestors.

But when Evangeline and her grandmother are called to New Orleans to resolve an unusual case, she uncovers a secret that will shake her to the soles of her silver-tipped alligator-skin boots.

Set in the evocative Louisiana bayou and the vibrant streets of New Orleans, Evangeline’s is a tale of loyalty and determination, the powerful bonds of friendship and family, and the courage to trust your gut no matter how terrifying that might be.

I'm all for the recent trend of middle grade supernatural horror featuring strong female leads. Last year had the excellent Small Spaces by Katherine Arden and City of Bones by Victoria Schwab. Evangeline of the Bayou ranks right there with them! I admit, I thought it might be a fun read and nothing more. But I was really surprised how great the story was and how much I enjoyed it. The Lousiana setting is vivid and vital to the story, the action is fast paced and featured a few twists that I did not guess. And wow does it get dark and bloody! But in the good way - the stakes are high but you know it will turn out right in the end. But Evangeline is the heart of this book, and it wouldn't succeed nearly so well if she didn't have the heart that Jan Eldridge writes her with. I really hope this is the beginning of a series. The mythology is built up well to grow on and I have a feeling that there are many bayou creatures left to visit in Evangeline's future.

It makes me sad to give this book such a low rating because I had high expectations for it :(

I love the concept of the story but it just wasn’t executed well.

It wasn’t well written, I felt no connection with the characters and I’m so so disappointed because it is set in the bayou and also in New Orleans which is why I had such high expectations because I love New Orleans but we hardly got to see any of the bayou OR New Orleans and it just wasn’t descriptive or atmospheric enough.

I just found myself utterly bored throughout and skipping pages because I wanted to get to the end (which rarely happens to me!)

I think this MIGHT be okay for younger people but I think even they may find parts of this boring.

It breaks my heart to write this as I was soooo looking forward to this book! I just soooooo wish that we had gotten to see the bayou and New Orleans more and had gotten more description and atmosphere for both as that would of made such a difference!

Cute and charming as all get out. Jan Eldredge was born & raised in Louisiana so she gets points and despite the endless (endlessssss) "bayou" similes & metaphors that I'm not sure anyone uses (but maybe they do?? I am a city Louisianian), all the descriptions of the bayou, New Orleans, and the swamp creatures that abound rang really true. Kids into fantasy should totally read this. If they are local, they'll identify with Mardi Gras culture, family ties, local magic...and if they aen't local they won't get a totally made up image of the bayou. Great message too. AND bonus points for male/female main characters with no romance. Cute romp through Louisiana magic with strong messages about family, friendship & bravery.

I really enjoyed the setting of the Louisiana bayou, the atmosphere of the swamps thick with cypress trees, and "foggy mist, croaking frogs, and bugs chirping." References to golden catfish, hush puppies, and especially the beignets from Cafe Du Monde. Definitely a sense of place and the magic of the South. The first part of the book centers on Evangeline's first assignment to banish a banshee. It introduces the concept of a haunt huntress, some of the typical supernatural creatures that Gran and Evangeline hunt, and the tools of the trade, everything from powdered beetles to dried fish eyes. In New Orleans, Gran and Evangeline meet Mr. and Mrs. Midsomer, and their son Julian. At first, Evangeline and Julian don't hit it off. Julian can be rather blunt and asks lots of questions. He likes things orderly, regimented, and he's happiest when he keeps to a strict schedule. He's also very intelligent, logical and so has doubts that Evangeline and Gran can figure out what is ailing his mother. To Julian, a swamp witch or haunt huntress is nothing more than a "smoke detective or faith healer." Despite Julian initially appearing rude to Evangeline, she is determined to do her job and because of her tenaciousness, she even manages to win him over.

The city of New Orleans makes the perfect backdrop for the legendary Rougarou. In the story, the identity of the alpha is part of the mystery, little hints to possible suspects are given, but the reader is left guessing as to which character it truly is. There are also revelations from Evangeline's families past that might hold the key to destroying the Rougarou. Going in I didn't know the story would include werewolves. Aside from a few movies I've watched, it's the first book on the topic I've read. I actually found myself enjoying the setting and even the magical elements of New Orleans. There's a special trip to Papa Urbain's shop to purchase a gris-gris bag and a prediction from the voodoo priest that two people are about to die adding to the supernatural mystery and suspense. Most of all I enjoyed Evangeline and her silver-tipped gator-skinned boots, she's smart, feisty, eager to prove that she's not a "middling" and make her Gran proud. At the end of the book, there is a glossary of monsters, ghosts and assorted supernatural entities included in the story.

Favorite Line: "It's when we start to believe our doubts that we fail at the things at which we should succeed."

I've been trying to think of something to say to review this book other than 'I liked it' for about a week now and you know what ...I liked it! It was cute and fun and everything you would want from a paranormal type book some great Southern flare. Evangeline was a great protagonist and I hope we get to see more of her in the future. [and that is my very short review lol]

If 10-year-old me had read this book she would have been beside herself. Even pre-Buffy I loved stories like this, where girls are tough and equipped to fight supernatural forces. I was so into horror and ghost stories, even when I was a kid, and there weren't that many stories out there that featured young girls as the adventurous hero type. (The Buffy movie came out when I was 12 and I saw it in the theater like 15 times. The show came out when I was 16 and I was, and still remain, a die-hard fan.) Evangeline is tough but flawed. She's brave, smart, impulsive, stubborn, aggressive, curious. She's not just a stock character. She has depth and life. The same can be said of her grandmother, who is a tough old broad who's been fighting the supernatural all her life. Granny is definitely a badass.

Good characters alone don't make a great book but thankfully the story was also compelling. I read this in one sitting because the story moved forward at a nice pace. There were no lags or boring passages, no fillers. The language and vocabulary were age appropriate but not simple. The author handled some complex emotional issues with a pretty delicate hand. The book felt like the pilot episode of a really great series. I hope there are more adventures starring Evangeline of the Bayou to come.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I can see this being fun, but I just couldn't get into it. I couldn't get past the amazing amount of Cajun cliches and stereotypes, mixed with Voodoo stuff. Hmmm. The two cultures don't really co-exist, do they? Okay, okay, yes, it's a supernatural fantasy, so why can't the author do whatever she wants with this setting. Maybe I had too high of expectations since I am from Louisiana and was really looking forward to a Louisiana themed middle grade fantasy book. It definitely has a cute, plucky young heroine, though!

Would you like to be in the business of chasing monsters and spirits? Evangeline is from a long line of haunt huntresses and fighting these demons is in her blood... or so she thinks. Whenever she tries to go off on her own things don't always go as planned and she seems to make things worse. Plus, every haunt huntress gets a familiar, some type of animal that is fiercely loyal, and Evangeline still has not found hers yet. She is beginning to doubt that she even has haunt huntress powers. Then her Gran accepts a job in the big city of New Orleans to help a family whose wife/mom is very sick. It is not long before they realized that Mrs. Midsomer has been bitten by a rougarou, a human that turns into a werewolf-type beast. At the next full moon Mrs. Midsomer will turn into a rougarou and if she makes her first kill, then she can never turn back. But if Gran can kill the alpha rougarou before all of that happens, then she will be released. This task seems impossible when Gran falls, breaks her leg, and is taken into surgery right before the moon is full. Gran's last words before she is knocked out is for Evangeline to run away back to the bayou. This is Evangeline's plan when she realizes that she is not a haunt huntress, but that is not what happens. Does Evangeline really not have any haunt huntress powers? Will Mrs. Midsomer turn into a rougarou and make her first kill? Is there anything that Evangeline do to save Mrs. Midsomer and her son, Julian? Read this high-paced, action-packed, slightly funny about family, friends, and finding yourself.

Evangeline Clement works as a haunt huntress with her grandma. They find and eliminate wraiths, demons and other unpleasant supernatural creatures from their home in New Orleans. When they are called to help a woman who may have been infected by a werewolf, they find a much bigger plot to take over the town. Even more disturbing, Evangeline finds herself taking the lead long before she has completed her training.

This is a good series for fans of the Nicolas Flamel and Inkworld series.

A girl struggles to claim her power, which she is not sure will ever come. I liked the mix of Evangeline's superstition and Julian's science, although it seemed a bit unfair that he turned out to be wrong for not not believing in werewolves. Some bits I could predict although there were also some surprises.

This was so cute! It made my little cajun heart happy. As with most middle grades, and as an adult reader, I saw some things coming a mile away, but the book still managed to keep me on the edge of my seat. I wish it was a series! I'd love to read more about Evangeline and her Gran. 💜

A Haunt Huntress battles all sort of ghosts and monsters using her wits, potions, the tools of the trade and a bit of magic. Evangeline Clement’s thirteenth birthday is fast approaching. That’s when a Haunt huntress or Swamp Witch finds her animal familiar and proves she has heart in order to awaken her magical powers. Evangeline is getting a bit worried though because time is running out and she has yet to acquire her familiar.
This middle grade novel has so much to offer a young reader. A brave heroine with a big heart, she has to learn to trust her gut and believe in herself while battling a sinister foe. A gripping plot that will have tweens totally engrossed. Evangeline’s wise Gran’s adages were wonderful. I especially liked this one, “Fear is a steel trap. It keeps you from moving forward. It binds up your courage, as well as your smarts.” The illustrations throughout the story are bold and striking. There is also a Glossary at the end of the book of monsters and other otherworldly critters for those readers wanting to know more about shadow crouchers or rougarous. A fun, fast paced spine-tingling read with a feisty heroine that will delight any tween.

A dark but at times light hearted story about a girl training to be a haunt huntress: a woman who fights the things that go bump in night.

Each parish in Louisiana had a family of female haunt huntresses, and Evangeline’s mom was one of the best before she died in the field. Living with her huntress Gran in the bayou, Evangeline hopes to be a great huntress like the rest of the women in her family line.

When a dangerous new case sends Evangeline and her Gran to New Orleans, Evangeline must come face to face with the same monster that killed her mother. Using her grit and smarts, she must defeat this threat to her family for good. All she has to do is believe in herself.

I think this is a cool departure from normal MG fantasy, kind of like a Southern Lite Supernatural. While the writing was good, there were far too many (bad) metaphors.

EVANGELINE OF THE BAYOU is an MG fantasy that stole my heart. I love a good monster hunting story (😉) and this is a great one featuring a strong female lead in gatorskin boots who wants to be a haunt huntress just like her Gran. Jan Eldridge is such a good writer, you feel the eerie creep of the bayou and the dangerous voodoo magic of New Orleans, at once enchanting and scary. Evangeline's skills are sometimes doubted and she even doubts herself, making this a great story about bravery and standing up against the darkness (whatever that darkness may be). A great read for humid, summer nights.

I LOVED this story and hope Jan Eldredge writes more! The pages of EVANGELINE are filled with humor, wit, and adventure. Jan Eldredge brings Louisiana culture and lore to life in this fun, mystical book. It should be on every library shelf because even the most reluctant reader won't be able to stop until every page has been devoured.

Not "Darker", More Like "Richer"

I wasn't sold on this book when I first started it. Evangeline lives with her Grandma, who is a "haunt huntress", (bayou swamp witch). Evangeline's Mom was a huntress who was killed in the line of duty. Evangeline is waiting to come into her powers, but she's late and she's afraid she may be a powerless "middling". Now, I've read this before, and not to be a wiseguy but I wanted something special to get me into another version of this familiar story. Well guess what? Excuuuuuse me for being a grump, because this is a deep and rich treatment that is well worth a look.

We start off slowly, with spunky and spirited Evangeline getting in over her head on what should be an easy assignment. Even then, though, the way Evangeline's methods and materials are described, and the haunted atmosphere that's created, suggest good things are around the corner. Sure enough, Grandma and Evangeline are soon headed to New Orleans to take on a major case, and at this point the tale takes off.

Lots of times these voodoo-ish tales set in New Orleans settle for dropping a few place names, making a reference to Mardi Gras, and mentioning a gris gris bag. Not so here. Evangeline and Grandma are the real deal and the reader really feels like they're watching a serious haunt huntress getting ready for a serious case. Between the foreboding atmosphere and the detailed immersion into the fine points of swamp witchcraft this feels eerie and legit.

SPOILER. When it turned out that we were dealing with a ragarou, (swamp werewolf), which I usually try to avoid on general bored-with-werewolves principles, I was still happy to go along because the story had been set up so well. Evangeline is a feisty pip who you just have to root for. She has all of the smarts and vinegar and gutsy spunk you could ever want in a heroine, while still being vulnerable and relatable. Interestingly, she gets saddled with a pasty, apparently spineless boy from the threatened household who is maddening, very funny, odd, and surprising. Giving Evangeline a sad sack and grumpy sidekick was a fine stroke, and added humor, interest, and variety to what could otherwise have been a predictable coming-of-age heroine story.

The writing is particularly worthy of note. There are some edgy throwaway lines and observations, and a bit of vinegar in the characters' attitudes. Evangeline is not terribly impressed by big city life and her comments can be withering. Grandma's wise contributions are actually wise and pertinent, so there are interesting insights peppered into the action. As to the action, there is a grand confrontational finish that should please anyone who likes their werewolf stories to end with mayhem, so the book has that covered.

The upshot was that I liked these characters and admired the way the author gave them some depth and style. The plot was predictable, but that was no surprise. It actually had enough twists and turns to be engaging throughout. The voodoo style details were carefully placed, and treated with enough respect to make them interesting instead of just passing window dressing. All in all, this ended up being a satisfying and action packed tale with some fine touches. A nice find.

(Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

Wer New Orleans einmal anders kennenlernen möchte, kommt an diesem Hit nicht vorbei.
