Oh this was gripping enough but...well, we'll come to that.
Over the last seven years three prepubescent girls have disappeared from the same street, Poppy Drive. Detective London McKenna has a lead on a paedophile who might be involved. She and her new partner, Ben Chase, go to the house. They find evidence that links him to the missing girls but there is also an over powering smell of gas...KABOOM. There house and their evidence goes up in smoke. London wants the case of the missing girls. No leads have surfaced over the seven years. She goes back to speak to the families but they are hostile.
She thinks there is something fishy but just can't put her finger on it. In trawling through the paedo's computer she finds a link which finds a girl but it all too late. One of the parents finally cracks and an affair comes out of the woodwork. Soon lies and secrets are piling up like garbage at a rubbish dump. This is much worse that she could have imagined. It then got very, very dark and disturbing.
OK so as I said it was gripping enough but - I think this time it was all over-egged a bit. London was too pushy and insubordinate, she was too gung-ho and the plot was a bit too perverse. I know you have to suspend disbelief somewhat to read any fiction but no amount of that would convince me this could ever happen without others picking up on it. Also, I'm getting a bit sick of female leads that are so twisted up with guilt that they can barely function and who won't allow themselves to have any happiness. We all know why London is screwed up but maybe she needs a therapist, a new job and a life!
Three girls from the same street have been kidnapped at different times. While pursuing a registered sex offender, London McKenna stumbles upon a clue that could break open the seven year case of the missing girls. It isn't long before she has everyone including the reader second guessing everything they thought they knew about everyone involved. Soon family secrets are being drug to the surface and nobody is safe on Poppy Drive.
If you're a fan of shows like Cold Case and Law and Order SVU, this book is definitely for you. At times it was a little hard to read due to how horrendous the crimes were. I couldn't put this book down. I had to know what happened to those precious girls and I cheered London on the whole way. Even though it's the third book in a series it was still easy to read as a stand alone as well. I do plan on going back to read the others and it seems the wait for the next book won't be long. We will have even more London McKenna by the end of the year and I can't wait.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. A gripping thriller from start to finish, could barely put it down! Detective London McKenna is tasked to investigate a missing persons case which soon escalates into something more horrific when she takes the lead on a case involving the disappearance and subsequent abuse of three little girls who all lived on Poppy Drive…. Alex handles this subject matter in a calm and not overly graphic manner. The book gives you an insight into the horrors detectives working these types of cases suffer, and the torment family's endure. Gate’s skill lies in putting across the horror without being graphic. You feel the disgust, horror and reluctance of the detectives working on and around the case. The need to know the final outcome of the case pulls at you, begging you to follow London from clue to clue, through twists and traumas until the full horror of what she has uncovered becomes clear. As London fights her way to the truth through the challenges of remaining within the law and proper procedure, and the demons of her past, you feel the pressure and emotion that fuels her drive to work the case to it’s horrifying conclusion. A brilliant work.
I was given a copy of this book from the author and chose to leave this review. Three little girls are taken within seven years. Girls go missing all the time so what's so unusual about these missing girls you ask? All three girls are from the same street, Poppy Drive. When Missing Person's Detective London McKenna wants the case, no one wants her to take it, they think it hits to close to home for her, especially her fiance James and her partner Ben. What follows is a cat and mouse game between London and the kidnapper. This is a great story and I really enjoyed reading about a flawed heroine who knows she's messed up but keeps trying to save lives. It's fast paced and kept me turning the pages to see what happens next, and the ending WOW!!!!! This is the first Detective McKenna novelists read and I'm going to go back to read the first ones and can't wait to read the next. Independent reviewer for Romance Authors That Rock
While each book in this series is a stand alone I highly recommend you start with book 1 (Girls in White Dresses) and move forward from there since it gives you more back ground information on London and her boyfriend James not to mention their relationship.
The Girls on Poppy Drive was the most dark, depraved, and heart wrenching of the three London McKenna novels I've read which is why I only gave it 3 stars instead of 4. It follows London's quest to find 3 little girls that have been abducted from the same street and have been/are being sexually abused. I guessed pretty early in the beginning of the book who did it but there were a few twists and turns I didn't see coming. It held my interest seeing how she was going to solve the case so I do recommend the book just be warned that it will hurt your soul.
I voluntarily review an Advanced Reader Copy of this book
I love this series!!!! I couldn't get enough of London.
London is back at it, she was ask to do a wellness check on Eddie. Eddie brother hear a little girl in the back ground and haven't hear from his brother since that day. When London and her partner Ben show up, they could hear a girl voice. And saw a video of a girl, thats when she realize its one of the girls from the Poppy Drive. Nobody have seen or hear from the girls.
London ask to be on the case of Poppy Drive. The first girl been kidnapped 7 years ago and then the next girl several years later and most recent another girl. 3 girls from Poppy Drive and nobody seen who took them. She couldn't leave this case alone and feel the need to help them.
London is back at work after mostly recovering from her injuries she sustained at the end of her last case (Hush Little Baby) now just a slight limp and cane are to show for it. Her missing persons case crosses over with a case that has remained unsolved for over 7 years and now come Hell or high water she is going to find those missing girls and find out who is behind it. We also see the ongoing development and changes of her and James relationship as well as see her delightful mother again and sister. There are plenty of twists, turns and surprises you do not see coming that keep on the edge of your seat and addicted to this book literally to the very end! I can not wait for the next book in this series!!
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
WOW!!! This book was nothing short of intense. I loved it. It was at times a challenge to read as it gets pretty dark. The reality is that the world looks like this more often than we like to say. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. I am excited about the realness of the characters, their lives and relationships. The suspense is exciting and scary. I read this boo in one day. You may not want to use it to unwind before bed. It may inhibit sleep. Definitely a great addition to my library.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book...
Detective London McKenna is so awesome!!! She is my hero! Alex Gates has brought us another amazing story about London McKenna. The plot was another exceptional plot with lots of twist and turns. I never saw them coming. The characters are well-developed. London is easily relatable especially the way she cares about her cases. I'm always hooked from the very beginning! I hope to see her and James get their HEA eventually. I can't wait for the next book!
Thrilling and awesome suspense from an author that's new to me! London is a former victim herself, truly damaged and desperate to save three little girls from her pedophile abuser. I loved the way the author built the story, showing London's determination, insight, frail emotional condition yet internal and physical strength. And her relationship with James, her fiance, was also gripping; each time they spoke it seemed would be the last. Excellent read!!!
I received a complimentary advance copy of this book and this is my voluntary and honest review.
I’m at a loss for words. Such a disturbing subject yet I was hooked. Couldn’t put it down. I volunteered to read this book in exchange for an honest review and I wasn’t too sure about it based on the story blurb. Such a brutal subject but wow just WOW. I would compare it to a James Patterson novel it was that well written definitely want to read the next book in the series and the ones before. Wish I could give it 10 stars instead of 5
This was a great read that had me captivated from start to finish. It was my first read from Alex Gates and I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style. The Author did an amazing job at explaining the torture but without all of the expilit details and I like that. The pacing of the story was on point and the twists and turns numerous. I look forward to more from this Author and in this series. I voluntarily requested and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
London has skeletons in her closet but that doesn't stop her from trying to be the best cop she can. This book had me hooked from the beginning and I didn't see the ending coming. I am going to read the other books now in this series because I want to know more about her. There are 3 missing girls and they are all being used and exploited. Twists and turns and unexpected things happen in this book. Sometimes it gets a tad confusing.
this book was excellent. kept me on my toes until the end. cant wait to read more of your books. its about a detective who wants to solve a case of three missing young girls that have been gone for years. even if it will cost her her life! you wont believe who the kidnapper is. thanks for giving me a chance to read this book!
Intense suspense thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat. Three girls go missing, all from Poppy Drive. Detective London McKenna wants the case but her fiancé James and Ben her partner don’t think it’s a good idea. This was the first book I’ve read by Alex Gates and I was blown away. I voluntarily received this book to review for my honest opinion.
You won’t be able to put this book down until you have finished it. You will be glued to the edge of your seat and you will feel every pain. This was a heart wrenching story that will bring you to tears more than once. Alex Gates is an excellent author and has quickly become a favorite of mine.
Great but hard to read mystery. 3 little girls all disappeared from the same street 4 years apart. London McKenna, a cop investigating the case, is a kidnap survivor herself. Will this case help her or erase her sanity?
You want action, intrigue, suspense, heart pounding excitement-read this series. Every page brings you back to see where the mysteries and murders will trundle. Thanks Alex Gates, few as good, but, none better.
