Garry’s at the end of his tether. He’s waiting at Glasgow Airport to meet his friend Will, on their way to a holiday in a Scottish Highlands hotel. Now there’s a ten-hour delay to incoming flights, the seat in the lounge is more like an instrument of torture, and he’s beyond tired of airport food.
He’s also dreading having to apologise for the pass he recently made at Will, his colleague at a London bank, under the influence of too many beers and a long-held crush. Now Will’s been offered a new job offer on a continent thousands of miles away, Garry realises it may be the end of their close friendship—let alone anything more.
To add to Garry’s stress, he’s treated to the company of Emily and Max, two young people who think he needs educating in the ways of the world. Struggling with their well-meaning help and the startling mess from spilled ketchup and noxious-smelling sweets, he’s encouraged to re-examine how he feels about Will and to decide what kind of journey he’d really like them to take together.

Very good short m/m romance about a guy waiting at the airport for a very good friend who's been overseas for a final job interview. Since his friend's flight turns out to be delayed 12 hours, he has plenty of time to think about how much he'll miss his friend and how much he screwed up the last time they saw each other. Some very unusual people sit near him and help distract him from his thoughts... or do they?
Sweet short, Garry is waiting on his best friend Will, whom he loves but he needs a bit of help to realize that. The help comes in the form of 2 kids. I enjoyed this story, it was a sweet, feel good story, my only complaint was the short time the MCs actually spend together in the story, I wanted just a bit more of them.
Heavy on the sweet and cute, this story was a fun, quick read that had me grinning at the kids’ remarkably precocious insights. Sometimes you just need others to point out the obvious to you, and Max and Emily did this for Garry in their adorable way while serving as a distraction from the huge delay of Will’s flight.
For the majority of the story, we don’t get to see Garry and Will together except for a few flashbacks; most of the plot centers on the kids Garry meets chatting with him and essentially helping him work out his thoughts about his best friend. I thought Emily’s word switches were funny, and I was trying to work them out right along with Garry.
While I wish there would have been more on-page time between Garry and Will, this story was more focused on Garry figuring things out for himself (with a bit of prompting by the kids) so it was like a mini self-discovery. Between A Rock and A Hard Place was a 4-star read for me, and is a good way to spend an hour or two when you want to read something light and sweet…with a tiny bit of spice thrown in at the end. Even though it’s short and sweet, there's still enough adult language and some sexual content that would make this book for readers 18+.
3.5 A warning in never underestimating children. You never know what their plans might be. Emily and Max are typical children, yet not, who "help" Garry while they are all stuck waiting out The Delay in flights in Scotland. Garry is waiting for his best friend Will, who has been I. America on a job interview and who Garry kissed in a moment of anguish about Will leaving London, and is now afraid their friendship is over; the children are keeping away from their parents, who are fighting while waiting for a flight home. The story is nearly entirely Garry's interaction with the children. The twist at the end was enjoyable. This is definitely a must like kids kind of book.
Gary is stuck in the airport in Glasgow. The deal was he would meet his best friend Will who is flying in from the US and they are going to meet up with some friends for a group holiday. Unfortunately The Delay is causing all flights to be late by about 10 hours and since he can't reach the organizers of the holiday and doesn't know the hotel he's stuck waiting, although he promised Will he would wait. He suddenly gets a couple of young kids as companions as he waits and their questions trigger him to do some thinking about his relationship with Will, what he really wants and how he feels about Will's chance to take a high power job in the US leaving London. This was a very cute story, Will and Garry only get together in the last couple of pages, the entire book is Garry and the kids and its at turns humorous and touching and a bit sad. A cute concept how something you are angry about like a delay can turn out to be a good thing in the end.
It's the story of Garry during "The Delay" on Glasgow Airport waiting for his best friend Will and coming to terms with his feelings.
I liked this short, cute story very much. There was a lot I could relate to (the adventures of waiting in public places) and the characters felt very real to me. Although the children talked wise beyond their age they were cute and likeable, just the little angles they looked like. ;-)
The airport lounge... not the most exciting place on earth, especially when you're waiting for a flight delayed by 10 hours. Not, perhaps, the first place one thinks of when they think romance (well unless like me you watch a gazillion Christmas films where there are inevitably snow-delayed flights and meet-cutes) but this short story captures a sweet story of friends to lovers - even though only one protag is present for a majority of it!
It's really a story of self-examination (of feelings people, a physical self-exam might be a bit much in an airport waiting area. Might.). Garry, stranded at Glasgow airport waiting for his BFF Will is contemplating the last time he saw Will and what it means for the future. Will is moving on, just when Garry realises it's the last thing he wants Will to be doing. Procrastination, examination, regret, fear... these all guide Garry's thoughts over the long wait.
Garry's not really a kid lover so of course he gets lumbered with two whilst waiting. Two kids who pass on sage advice in the manner only kids can, all offered in a sticky surrounding of sweets and junk food. It's cute.
I kinda had to look t'other way and not delve into the 'why is this man making friends with feeding these strangers kids and not trying to find their parents/family/the police' and just accept it as part of the story. It's sort of given a vaguely satisfying explanation at the end if I squint a bit and blur the edges and remember it's just a story.
As long as I didn't examine that premise too much I could enjoy the story as the cute, sweet, funny friends-to-more story this is. If you like cute shorts then go for it, a great read for a Sunday afternoon cuppa break.

This was a really cute short story and a total comfort read. If you like stories with adorable kids, then you'll enjoy this one. The best way to describe the whole thing is 'short and sweet' and at the end, I really wanted to hear more. I wanted to know what happened between Will and Garry once they were on their holiday in Scotland and I even wanted to learn more about Allen and Leonard ;) I really like the twist at the end - it made me smile!
Fantastic book! It was great to read a story that doesn’t do the formula romance and it’s was really funny. “Men strudel” and “piss moustache” alone made me laugh for 30 minutes each. Highly recommended - except for those of you who hate kids.
Lol, those two kids were amazingly annoying, but cute, too. Wow, it was really slow, novella about emotions and true feelings. In general it was a bit to boring for my taste, but the end was good, I liked it!
I need to start by saying that I am a fan of CL, Her easy writing style and way of describing the setting, makes her stories a pleasure to read and let's not forget the characters. Slightly quirky but always lovable.
Garry and Will have been friends for years. They both live in London and work together but Will is flying back from a job interview in America and Garry is currently waiting for him in Glasgow airport. With a ten hour flight delay, Garry is at a loss as to what to do to pass the time so he ends up reflecting on the ridiculous pass he made at Will, when he kissed his best friend and made a fool of himself. To help him sort through his thoughts, are two young kids who take root in the seats either side of him and have more opinions about his friendship with Will than he really wants to hear.
From the blurb, I was really looking forward to reading about Garry and Will's developing romance but to be honest, it felt more like the two children, Max and Emily, were the real MC's. I'm not a fan of interfering kids in stories but these siblings had a nice little running commentary and made it much more interesting. Although Garry and Will get their HEA, the reader doesn't get to spend much time with just the two of them to appreciate any chemistry. This was a fun story but it wasn't really the subject matter I was expecting.

Between a Rock and a Hard Place is book 5 in the London Lads series but each story can be read as a standalone. This is only the second story I've read by Clare London and I found it deliciously entertaining. It's not a long book but it was an intriguing and captivating story.
Garry is stuck in an airport waiting for Will and Will's flight has been delayed 10 hours. For anyone who's ever been stuck in an airport because of flight delays you know how trying this can be. Add in a couple of precocious kids and Garry's wait doesn't seem like it's going to be much fun. The thing is that the kids, who Garry has never met until today, begin to grow on him.
They boy and girl manage to help Garry pass the time while waiting on Will and keep him from worrying about how things will be with Will when they see each other again. Garry wants to be more than friends but he's afraid he mucked it all up by making a drunken pass at Will before he left on the business trip he's now returning from.
This book has only one hot scene but that doesn't matter as the story is what's important. And there is a wonderful surprise twist at the end that I absolutely didn't see coming. I'm looking forward to reading more stories by Clare London.
An advanced copy of this book was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.
This was a rather fun interlude - a short story set in the hell of an airport lounge with ten hour delays for arrivals. Garry, waiting for his best friend to return from an interview in America, is dreading the reunion after losing control at their last meeting. To add to this hellish experience Garry is sandwiched by two children who proceed to mercilessly grill him on every aspect of his life and force him to face the truth.
Partway through I wondwred if this was going to turn out to be one of those allegorical stories in which the airport lounge is in fact a waiting room in hell or that the children would turn out to be angels (shades of Clarence in ' It's a Wonderful Life'... ) but in fact it's all reality - really an airport lounge and the children are just children. However there is a delightful twist right at the end that I didn't see coming - which is part of the fun I referred to earlier.
The blurb pretty much say it all. Garry anxiously waiting for his friend's flight and dreading meeting him at the same time. The whole waiting period spent with him either flash back to his time with Will or engages with a pair of children who sit next to him at the airport lounge.
Between the flashbacks and present time, I enjoy the later where the bewildered Garry have to deal with Max and Emily. The character's awkward conversation with the children is often hilarious - especially Emily's awful pronouncement and Gary's confusion. At the same time, these kids unwittingly help Garry comes to term with his feeling and how to deal with it.
I don't particularly sympathize with Garry; he struck me as a worrywart. At the same time, I can relate to what he feels on the matter of dealing with children. The appeal of this novella for me lay on the seemingly innocent observations and perceptions from the children. Even that was slightly suspicious given the (predictable) revelation later in the story. But all in all, it's quite a cute and charming novella. And it could be read as standalone, even if you haven't read the other entries to Clare London's "London Lads" series before.

Stuck at an airport waiting for his best friend Will to arrive from New York, Garry has a lot of time to think when there is a major delay. With the help of two strange children ( and I mean strangers and odd)He comes to terms with his feelings.
Between a Rock and a Hard Place is a short sweet story. There are a few fun characters. ( Who doesn't like adorable kids?) The story is funny too. I adored little Emily and laughed out-loud at her mixed up words. My only caveat was that once Will arrived the story suddenly ended. I would have liked the story to be longer and see them on their vacation and how things would develop more.
If you like sweet short stories, cute kids and happy endings you will like this.
This was such a sweet, delightful little story! It was lovely how Clare London managed to give us enough of Garry and Will's backstory to see how they got to that point and give us a glimpse into what might be their future. My only complaints? That I would've liked to see them together as a couple and not just reuniting like they did and that I would've loved to have Will's POV, too. However, I really liked to see Garry interacting with Emily and Max and then finding out who they really were with. Recommendable!

This is the story or Garry, as he sits in an airport waiting for his best friend, Will. Garry and Will work together in London, and have been best friends, but nothing more has come of it, although Garry would like it to be more. The two men vacation with a group of their friends every year, this year they are heading to Scotland. Will has been in New York City for a job interview, and is traveling from NYC directly to Glasgow, while Garry is going from London. The two agree to meet at the airport and drive to the hotel together. Unfortunately Will’s flight is delayed, by ten hours. Garry can’t reach the friend that has arranged this trip, and can’t decide what else to do, so he stays at the airport waiting for Will. He snoozes a bit, until he is woken up by a little girl, who along with her brother, befriend the bewildered Garry. Eventually Will does arrive, and the truth of how they feel about each other comes out.
That is about it for the plot! The entire story takes place in the airport, and the main characters are only together for minutes at the end of the story. Most of the time is spent on Garry and the two kids he meets. I didn’t find it particularly interesting, and I found the kids to be very annoying. There are some flashbacks to Garry and Will interacting before Will leaves for NYC, but it wasn’t enough for me to get a sense of their attraction. Then at the end, after this long slow time spent in the airport, the two reunite and bam! It’s over.
This book was ok, I didn’t love it, but didn’t hate it. There was too much time is spent at the airport with the kids, and not enough time is spent building a relationship between the main characters. I do know there are more books in this series, which I haven’t read, so maybe there is more about these two in a previous book, but there isn’t enough about them here to have any sense of who they are. There was one unrealistic sex scene at the end, and that was it. Just not enough plot, not enough character development, and not enough emotional or physical connection for my taste.
This is great as a standalone and a super cute book!
Garry and Will have been friends for years, but it’s only now that they are re-examining their relationship.
Most of the book is done is flashbacks, but it’s done well. Garry meets some adorable kids who help him to examine his feelings and it’s both touching and sweet.
Highly recommended as either part of the series or on it’s own.
Kids! Kids always make a story better... and these two little devils were just the berries! Garry didn't have a clue what he was in for when The Delay came and he decided to wait for Will like Will had asked him to! Max and Emily made this story the delightful read that it was! I really enjoyed Ms. London's writing style and look forward to reading more of her work in the near future!
This is the fifth in the London Lads series and as different from the others and they are from each other. The story is of Garry and Will long time friends who went to college together, work for the same corporation, play together and generally fill out each others lives. Will has an opportunity to interview for a promotion to corporate headquarters in the states and Will is awaiting his return at Glasgow airport so they can begin then annual vacation with old friends. Due to delays Garry is stuck at the airport in Glasgow waiting in uncomfortable seats and stewing over a pass he made at Will and Will;s possible promotion and how all these things will affect their life. To make things worse two children Emily and Max decide to befriend him and proceed to tell him how the world works and make a literal mess of him and his luggage. After awhile he finds he likes the strange company and they help him while away the time. The children disappear just as Will's plane arrives and he stumbles to apologize and make things better with Will. Will however has a few surprises of his own. an interesting story without one sex scene but it's just what actually fits the story. Good read!
I loved this story. Short and sweet. Makes for a bit of light reading. A true feel good read without the heavy emotional baggage and turmoil.
However, I'm curious as to whether or not there is a novel that this was perhaps adapted from? Like maybe the uncles had their own novel where we first originally meet the children, even for a brief time, and our two MC's Will and Garry. If there hasn't been a base novel I think there should be. I mean, now that I've seen Will and Garry's story I'm curious to see how it all was beforehand. I want to see the story between 'Uncle Allen and Uncle Leonard'. Anywho, maybe I'm just wanting more of Clare London's writings which I will most definitely be looking in to. This story was absolutely adorable and I'm glad I found it.
