Tinyville Town: I'm a Mail Carrier

Rate this book
In Tinyville Town: I'm a Mail Carrier, Rita the mail carrier makes sure everyone gets their mail, rain or shine.

The Tinyville Town series is set in a cozy community where the people are kind, everyone says hello, the bus is always on time, and all the townsfolk do their part to keep things running smoothly. Everyone has a job to do in Tinyville Town. With a nod to the busy world of Richard Scarry and the neighborhood feel of Sesame Street, this new series will become a favorite read for preschoolers and is ideal for story time and class discussions about occupations and community helpers. Tinyville Town is a growing, thriving city full of interesting people. They can't wait to show you around!

First sentence: Whatever the weather, I have a job to do. I get things where they're supposed to go.

Premise/plot: I'm a Mail Carrier is one of the books in Brian Biggs' Tinyville Town series. The series includes picture and board books. Other books in the series include Tinyville Town: Gets To Work!, Tinyville Town: I'm a Librarian, Tinyville Town: I'm a Firefighter, Tinyville Town: I'm a Veterinarian, Tinyville Town: I'm a Police Officer, Tinyville Town: Time for School.

This one is a board book. It introduces little ones to the job of mail carrier, obviously. She is a hard worker! Perhaps because she lives in Tinyville Town, she does everything herself.

My thoughts: I liked this one. I did. My absolute favorite in the series is I'm a Librarian. But this one finds a way to work books into it as well! The Mail Carrier carries packages, and one of those packages is a book.

Teachers, doctors, grocery store cashiers- children love to play pretend using their favorite community helpers. Tinyville Town, I’m a Mail Carrier teaches young children about the importance postal workers are to a town. The main character, a single mother, sends her own children off to school and then begins her job. She battles a variety of weather elements, showing children how she must continue her duty because it is crucial in order for their society to function. There is strong vocabulary interspersed throughout the book that is not usually seen in books made for this age group- words like “route”, “architect” and “parcel” are excellent terms in which young children should be exposed. In addition to the narration, there are also dialogue bubbles which add to the story’s complexity. For a board book, it is much more complex than one would imagine all the while teaching children about perseverance and the accomplished feeling of a job well done.

not as good as i'm a librarian but better than I'm a Police officer. There is a lot to like about tinyville town, but the accuracy of the drudgery of work is always a little lacking.
