The plot and historical stoyline of this book are absolutely intriguing, and I think the factual basis of the ship's escape to a hidden port in the United States during the war makes a great story in particular. Unfortunately, this story was really slow to kick off and it doesn't end with much more excitement. I may be unfairly expecting this story to be more like historical adventure, when in fact it seems to be leaning more toward interpersonal relationships & character development. If characters and relationships are what the reader is looking for, this book won't disappoint. Unfortunately the mystery, action and intrigue that could have been harvested from the plight of the ship and it's crew are left on the roadside I think.

Well, in the beginning the story, the setting and the characters seemed really promising. But it seems she just forgot to continue writing the plot and it turned into quite a drag. I just skipped several pages multiple times and on the last 100 pages I found myself just scanned for some events happening.

Noioso dalla prima all'ultima pagina e scrivere 300 pagine di niente è davvero complicato. Una nave da crociera tedesca parte da NY per raggiungere l'Europa, ma è costretta a tornare indietro perché in Europa è appena scoppiata la Prima Guerra Mondiale. Il capitano (l'unico personaggio che avrebbe potuto essere sviluppato con un minimo di interesse, ma che l'autrice ha scelto di lasciare sullo sfondo) decide di attraccare a Bar Harbour nel Maine per evitare di essere intercettato dagli incrociatori inglesi.
La vita nella ridente cittadina si dipana tra flirtini, flirtoni, feste e attese. personaggi piatti e inutili, nessun interesse nella storia, in niente di niente... insomma davvero il nulla cosmico.

A leitura foi legal, a parte do meio do livro falou bastante do pessoal da ilha, e considerando o título e a capa, achei que não sairia tanto do navio, mas ainda assim foi bacana de ler, os capítulos são curtos e a narrativa é fluida. E claro, essa parte sobre o pessoal da ilha teve relação com a história e tudo o mais, mas ainda queria mais do navio em si, do capitão. Em relação a estes, achei a história triste, já sobre as pessoas, foi bem legal ver como elas estavam depois de anos do plot inicial. Durante toda a leitura eu meio que sabia o que ia acontecer, mas ainda assim foi triste, queria que o final tivesse sido diferente, mas no geral adorei o livro.

The best part about this novel is that it's based on a true story (about my beloved Bar Harbor!), and Paretti seems to have gotten the historical facts right. But while the cover claims this is "a novel of romance in old Bar Harbor," the story seems to lack a bit of...well, romance.
