Heathens Ink #3

From Ashes

Rate this book
“When the broken man with scarred skin walked into Heathens, asked for a job, and showed me a sketch of a phoenix, it felt like fate.”~ Adam

It started with an anonymous post by someone who didn't want to live anymore. I read it over and over again, unable to get it out of my mind. What if my brother Johnny had posted something like this before he'd taken his own life? Would someone have been able to save him?

I've been living a lie for 16 long years and I'm not sure how much longer I'll be able to keep it up. And when a beautiful, broken man walks into my tattoo shop asking for a second chance at life, I know I'll never be able to turn him away.

“When I was so far down I couldn’t even see the light, a stranger reached in to save me”~ Nox
I didn't have anything to live for, until a kind stranger pulled me back from the brink. With physical and emotional scars I have nowhere to turn now but to that same stranger who saved my life without realizing it. But as my feelings for Adam grow, will I ever be anything other than a surrogate for the brother he couldn’t save? Am I even worthy of his love?

**From Ashes is the third book in the Heathens Ink series, each book in the series CAN be read as a standalone.

CAUTION: this book contains graphic descriptions of domestic violence and drug use that may be disturbing to some readers.

ARC received for honest review

When you read several books a week it becomes very easy to weed out the stinkers within the first few chapters. The ones that speak to you are easy to spot, too, they're the ones you just cannot put down, even at 3 in the morning. But, for me, when a book fits somewhere in between it's usually due to some personal preferences, and that's where this book falls for me. It's not a bad read and a lot of people will really enjoy it, but there's a few things here that drive me crazy and move this from a solid 4 star read, to sit at three stars.

I've read this series from the beginning and have to say that I do really like the characters. And in this book the romance between Adam and Nox probably deserves 4 stars. Nox is a beautifully beaten down and broken character who turns his life around and goes and gets what he wants- his character arc is pretty awesome. And when Adam was all in, he went all in. Their relationship develops over the course of several months online so when they meet and get together a long while later they have lots of lovely moments together.

But I struggled with a few things...

*The writing.
At times it's very stilted and unnatural. Making it hard to connect to these characters.

*The stalker plot.
I just didn't think it was necessary. There was enough here already without it, and it was OTT. And, like in Going Commando, all the drama was handled and resolved off page. So why bother having it at all?

*The constant references to other books in the series.
This is not something that is just relevant to this author. I understand wanting to advertise other books in a series to readers by giving a small nod to a previous book character or situation, but here I felt like I was beat over the head with them. And it even got taken to another level by Madden who says...
“Yeah. I took a few bullets and I won’t bore you with the details of my recovery but it was quite dramatic. There was a character arch, struggles to face, even a surprising, emotional twist. But I got my Happily Ever After.”
*grimaces and facepalms*

As well as the recaps of both Madden and Royal's books, we are also bombarded with references to the setting up of Dani's MMF sandwich with a hunky cop and bartender. Thankfully Gage's potential love interest was subtle and only worth a couple of sentences.

I'm aware that things that bother me won't necessarily bother anyone else. What my rating comes down to is that a 3 star book is still good, but not something I'll read again.

FROM ASHES was another great HEATHENS INK book and I'm really loving this series so much! This time we get Adam and Nox's story and it's a very emotional one. FROM ASHES is divided into two parts, the first showing Adam and Nox's online friendship and Nox's struggle to survive through his abusive relationship and his drug addiction and the second part when Nox shows up at Heathens Ink. It was hard to read Nox's painful experiences but his story of survival is one I'm sure many people deal with daily. Once the story moves into part 2, which takes place a year later, Nox's story is much more hopeful as he's clean and working at Heathens. Nox begins to find himself again and I enjoyed watching him not just fall for Adam but also create his own friendships with the Heathen's crew, especially Dani and Madden. I also like how Nox has maintained a very upbeat attitude even after everything he's been through.

I also really enjoyed Adam who has been struggling with how to come out as bisexual. Even though everyone else at Heathens is queer, Adam is still concerned how they'll feel about him hiding his sexuality and he's especially concerned how his best friend Gage will feel. They have a complicated history centered around Adam's younger brother who committed suicide. Even with Adam's struggle I liked that he went all in with Nox and never doubted how he felt about him. Adam was the quintessential protector but he's not overbearing about it; he just wanted to help people in the way he wasn't able to help his brother.

These two fall fast but I'm not complaining. Most of the story's angst comes from outside sources including some drama from both Adam and Nox's respective exes. The last quarter does get a little much in the drama department and everything kind of wraps up in a way that feels rushed but overall this was a great read.

Note: there was a decent number of typos so that was a bit annoying

Content Warning: On page drug abuse, prostitution as a means of survival, domestic abuse, and suicidal thoughts (Chapters 1-5); Nox is almost killed by his abusive boyfriend; Nox frequently struggles with negative self-talk, often referring to himself as a junkie or a whore (countered each time by Adam); references to Adam's younger brother who committed suicide after coming out and being bullied

I really liked the romance between Adam and Nox.

Nox has a long way to come in terms of putting himself back together. I love who a community of recovery forms around him and Adam honors who he is.

The connection between Adam and Nox and the love that builds is great.

The side plots are way less interesting and too much drama at times but I do like the cast and the series and adore this couple.

Nice comfort/hurt read.

Like Rescue Me and Going Commando (the first two books in this series), From Ashes is not a happy, carefree romance. K.M. Neuhold tackles some real-life issues here, like drug addiction, depression, and loss/grief. It makes both Adam and Nox into real characters, instead of cardboard figures. It’s one of the reasons why I love her books, because of the ‘damaged’ characters she portrays. It makes the happily ever after all the sweeter.

The romance was a slow burn at first, which fit the story well. And oh my word, Adam and Nox are so sweet and perfect together. I was rooting for them from the start. I fell a little in love with Adam, because he was so caring towards Nox, even when he only knew him online. And once they got together, he was so patient with him. I loved that.

I also appreciated Nox not keeping his ‘secret’ about his identity from Adam the whole time. It may be a pet peeve of mine, but I dislike stories where one character keeps a secret from his love interest the entire time, and it blows up in the end…or not, because too often this results in an anti-climax. That was not the case here, and Adam’s reaction fit completely with his character.

The only aspect of the story I didn’t like was Nox’ ex. That felt a little too cliché and over the top to me, but it was such a minor subplot that it didn’t get in the way of enjoying this book. Can’t wait for the next installment in this series.

(I received an ARC of this book in exchange for a brutally honest review)

This was pretty good, enjoyable, even though some of the details seemed a little off. Nox is a former junkie prostitute, who had anonymously chatted with Adam online, who kept offering help. After a hospital stay and rehab, Adam takes him on as an apprentice, not knowing he’s the guy he chatted with. The story follows a slow developing romance, that Adam has to hide from Gage, because he never came out, in spite of his gay best friend and his gay brother who committed suicide. There’s also a stalker/vandal subplot adding tension and drama.

I had a few problems reading this; how Nox could get into a rehab, find money to practice tattooing on his own and travel from Chicago to Seattle. Literary license I guess. I’m not the biggest fan of the first person, present tense used. The narrative sometimes felt very untutored and less than smooth. I did like the dual POV’s. I read these out of order and Shattered Pieces was a better read for me than the rest but I liked getting stories from each character in the shop. I would like to suggest a better editor and proofreader to the author though. I didn’t count that in rating because it wasn’t excessive but did get annoying at times. Decent read.

I loved the characters, I loved the storyline, and absolutely everything about this book. I am so bummed that I finished it because I’m going to have the worse book hangover ever! Lol.

Adam and Nox were so freaking sweet together. They were both a little flawed and each had their own little demons to overcome, but that just made me like them and connect with them even more. They made a beautiful and perfect match. This book made me laugh out loud and cry, and I just have so much love for these characters.

KM Neuhold is one of my all-time favorite authors, and she did not disappoint with this one. It hit me in the feels, and I loved every single second of it... so much so that I could even go back a reread it right now!

I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy from the author for an honest review.

This was an ok book but could've been much better.

This was true especially with Adam's persistence on keeping his sexuality a secret from his gay best friend for so long. It was for good reason at first but then became quite irritating as the book went along because it just didn't make sense to me as time went on and as his relationship with Nox progressed.

Gage must also either be the most oblivious or the most self-absorbed person in the universe simply based on how he managed to be so shocked at the news when he discovered it. See, EVERYONE but him noticed it and he lived in the same house with Adam and Nox. *face palm*

Overall, I liked the romance in the book but thought the ending was a bit predictable and the whole "problem" issues got wrapped up too quickly.

Enjoyable, though I didn't love it as much as the first two. Lots of hurt/comfort, but I expected a bit more from the "keeping it from Gage" storyline. Waiting for that shoe to drop was agonizing.

All in all though it kept my mind mostly occupied while I was waiting and writing in pain in the ER.

So kudos and thank you, K.M. Neuhold.

**** The third book in the Heathens Ink series.
* Triggers: descriptions of past heroin drug abuse, violence, physical and mental abuse.
Deep topics of a horrible life no one should ever have to lead. Then, amidst the ashes, scarred Phoenix/Nox rises up, strong, ready and willing to turn it around, and a year later he's headed to accept Adam's long ago offer of a job, but shows up as Nox.

During their one year online chats, Nox was Phoenix, which brought them friendship and a budding romance with an immediate link when they meet. It's the first time anyone has been nice to Nox, with soft touch, hugs and TLC. Sweet Nox never had a mother's hug nor a birthday party, and he deserves them. It's all part of what has made him so tough and enduring. Both men are resilient, caring, gentle and excited in their new opportunities.

The men find time for their secret sexy times, where Adam has his first M/M action. Closeted Adam needs to talk to Gage. Stories of pasts are told, acceptance is found, and the Heathens group is welcoming.
Nox's evil ex shows up with more evil in mind, and a co-conspirator.
Our men are well suited for each other.
We see tough topics, graphic descriptions that are balanced with care, and a big-hearted group of people. This is a rewarding read.

I highly recommend this story of strangers to lovers.
ENJOY !

Recensione a cura di Marika Schiavone per All Colours of Romance :)

Dolci e sensuali.

Reread 09/2024 review- 4.3~4.45 stars?

Reread 01/2024 review- 4.5~4.67 stars?? I don't know why, but I enjoyed this much more than the first time...I'm not sure if it's because it was an audio form or what 🤷‍♀️.

Original 04/2023 review- 4 stars. This was a very pleasant surprise. I finished this almost a month ago, so I can’t remember all the details, but I will leave you guys with the Quotes I liked.

Quotes:

Phoenix: I do what I have to do to survive
Inked: It doesn’t have to be that way. There’s more to life than just surviving.
Phoenix: Well, for me surviving is hard enough. If my addiction doesn’t kill me, my asshole boyfriend will.
Inked: You can get away from that fucker and you can get clean.
Phoenix: easier said than done
Inked: I didn’t say it would be easy but you don’t have to die
Inked: what can I do to help? name it
Phoenix: I don’t know, just be my friend
Inked: ... ok, but I’m serious when I say that if you need anything I’m here.
Phoenix: why do you care so much?
Inked: I don’t want you to die
Phoenix: why?
Inked: because life is worth it
Phoenix: Not mine
Inked: then make it worth living for
Phoenix: I still don’t get why you’re even talking to me…
Inked: Will it make you feel better if I have a selfish reason?

☆ The hole I’ve found myself in feels too deep to climb out of, but here’s this perfect stranger reaching in and trying to pull me out. But can he bear my weight or will I pull him into the hole beside me?

☆ I don’t understand why but he gives a shit about whether I live or die. At least he seems to. For some inexplicable reason I don’t want to let him down. I want to find a way to crawl out of this pit of despair rather than succumb to it. But fuck if that doesn’t sound like the most insurmountable task. I’m the spider in the sink, scrambling for a foothold, but inevitably being pulled down the drain.

☆ A world where I’m someone rather than something.

☆ “Yes, I need to take you on a date first because you deserve it. You’re not just a place to stick my dick, you’re a person who’s important to me. I want to do this right.”

☆ What can I say? tattooed as fuck, but I still love cuddles. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen that on a t-shirt before.

☆ “I love you Nox, you can tell me anything. Is this about the stalker bullshit? Or are you struggling with your addiction?” “You love me?” I ask in awe. “Of course, I do.” “I thought…” I take a deep breath and blow it out before finally meeting his gaze. “I thought you were saying it because of sex the other night.” Adam continues to look confused for several seconds before the problem dawns on him. “Oh, Bird, no.” He clutches me harder. “I’m sorry I made you question it, but you mean so much to me. You, not your body and not for sex.”

☆ “Oh please, I’m a phoenix baby, destruction only makes me stronger. You should know that by now.”

✩ ✩ ✩ ✩ FOUR-STAR ✩ REVIEW ✩ ✩ ✩ ✩

> > Judging a Book by it's Cover < <
Layered cut/paste composition with hard edges. Bold Title font and color. Title and series fonts are harder to read. Synopsis sounds moderately interesting.

> > Looking Deeper < <
POV ~> Alternating first person POVs, clearly defined, easy to follow.

Guilt has been an almost unbearable beast to bear since the death of his younger brother. Things that were said and done, things left unsaid, signs that went unnoticed or ignored... vicious in their self-incriminations. If Adam knew one thing, it was that he'd do better by other he'd meet from here on out that need help. And that started a year later when he opened Heathens Ink. And then a random message on an app from PHOENIX nearly sends him into a tailspin of desperation.
Nox never knew love and lost all hope of ever finding it long ago. The son of a junkie, he was orphaned at sixteen and lived on the streets, doing what was necessary to survive. Until Harrison came along. But even that silver lining tarnished and turned toxic - even deadly. A single thought, posted on a confessions app, draws the attention of INKED, who gives him hope for the first time.
Oh, this story has some sad content: Domestic abuse, stalking, murder, drug addiction, prostitution... Nox lived and witnessed the worst of things but, as his mother often said, From Ashes We Rise. He'd proven himself time and time again to do so, eventually landing on the doorstep of Heathens Ink after enduring the trials of hell itself.
Adam is bisexual but never came out as such. He's always played it straight but he can no longer pretend when Nox is near and soon the employees start catching on. The problem is Gage. Adam's kept this from his best friend for sixteen years and is terrified to confess now.
Add to it a crazy woman, a murderous ex, a hot cop and a few more great secondaries and you've got a full cast and a dynamic plot. There were a few conflicts but they seemed almost too easily resolved. An easy-to-guess whodunnit with no explanation on the main person's part, only the coerced player's, so the motive was unresolved and pointless. However, the conclusion is solid enough to imply a satisfying HEA. Bonus: Includes a sneak peek into Gage's story next and that... I truly look forward to.
.

Sigh.... Adam, Adam, Adam....
I wasn't sure about him... I wasn't sure about this whole book, being that it dealt with such heartbreaking issues, such as abuse, drugs, prostitution and all the angsty things that make me nervous. I shouldn't have been though, I've adored all the guys in this series, and I've loved all their stories. Maybe not their stories....but their happily ever afters.

So, here we have Adam, who lost his brother Johnny to a drug overdose.... if you've read any of the books you already know this... he and his best friend Gage struggle to find ways to cope with losing the most important person in their lives... but, they're making due.... sort of.... Adam's way, is helping people get second chances. He done it with Madden, with Owen, and now Nox....though it started a year before that, when he chatted with him on an annonymous chat site.....

Nox was in a bad way.... a serious drug addict who done questionable things to get his next fix, and who couldn't get away from his abusive boyfriend. He'd been given the dirtiest hand since he was born...and after all this, he was finding it hard to find a reason to keep going....
That's when he turned to the annon. chat app that put him in contact with Adam...
He was smitten, for sure, but more than that.... he had hope because after talking to Adam, he realized there might be good people in the world who could help him. Like a Pheonix, he could rise from all the devistation his life was and be something beautiful. Unforunately, the boyfriend tried to kill him before it was possible and a whole year went by before he could contact Adam again.
Adam, who never stopped thinking about him and wanted to help him so bad.

Adam was amazing... he's the glue that holds their makeshift family together, I'm convinced of it.
It's impossible not to love him and he ends up giving Nox a job, no questions asked. Nox was so appreciative because he didn't have anything to his name and needed a fresh start.
Now, in saying that.... I'm SO glad that he wasted no time telling Adam who he was. I thought it was going to be some drawn out hidden secret and it was going to drive me crazy.... but it wasn't. So, no angst there..... there was a little bit of angst, because Nox and Adam had somewhat of a stalker, but it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who it was... just which exes it was...
By the end, you know without question who it is and thankfully, they don't get away with it. You know, if you read any of my reviews that I do not get down with that, letting people get away with being terrible people. It's one of my biggest pet peeves. Luckily, that doesn't happen, though i'd love to have seen the ex girlfriend get more of a slap in the teeth.

ANYWAY.... overall...fantastic addition, and I can't wait for Gage to get his little piece of happy.
He deserves it so much. Also can't wait for more Liam, Owen, and bummer that Beau and Cas got with a chick, cuz I'd have loved seeing more of them too... now, not so much LOL
I'm biased... sue me.

4 stars from me!

This is my first book by this author and I will definitely be returning for more. Nox and Adam's story felt like an incredible roller coaster ride. Starting out sweet and intriguing, as you sit on your seat waiting for the car to move, anticipating the adrenaline rush that's about to hit. And then you slowly creep forward, climbing that hill and Adam and Nox finally meet and begin to build their relationship. And then you're hanging on for the ride, the dips and peaks, the feels rushing into you until everything crescendos in an epic ending.
So climb in, strap down, hold on tight as you enjoy the ride:
Adam's hands gently roam my body. Not harsh and demanding like I'm used to, but reverantly. Each breathy sound that falls from his lips between kisses burrows into my heart to make a permanent home.
Yeah, so, so good.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy.

Best one of the series so far. I liked how Nox isn’t introduced until a few chapters in and it’s just Adam’s side of the chat. It’s a nice Unknown and I really wanted to know more about Phoenix. The relationship like the others is easy. I think Madden was the only one so far that didn’t grab hold of his partner and refuse to let go. It was sweet, the brother was painful, as was the parents.

I didn’t agree with the secret keeping from Gage. It’s a bit worrisome what would’ve happened if he hadn’t been in the right place at the right time. The outside interference was obvious but made harder through Adam and Madden’s denial. I know the guy is trying to help but he’s not a therapist. I think it was just a good thing the bad guys were idiots or just plain arrogant. I’m happy they get a happy ending and I liked the mythic tattoos. Felt sorry for Gage though. He pretty much accepted he’d been abandoned. Mentions of drugs, prostitution and suicide.

I really liked Nox and Adam. Their romance was really good. Adam and Nox are really good together. Nox has really low self esteem, especially because of his asshole ex but Adam was super caring and you can really see how he respects Nox. I did think the stalker plot was bit over the top but I really enjoyed this book.

This is dual POV and can be read as a standalone, though there's lot of references to the other books. I think Dani's getting an mmf book? Is it already out? I'm looking forward to Gage's book! Can't wait!

Loving this series! I knew Gage must be the next to get a book but I wasn't sure how I felt about Gage. He is so distant and emotionless that I wasn't that excited to read his story. But then I read the first chapter at the end of this book and I was drawn in immediately! I forgot I was just reading the first chapter and then I turned the page and there was no more! I need to get the next book now!

“From ashes we rise,”

Wow, I just knew this book would be good, it's definitely the best one so far.

Nox has been to hell and back, It was hard to read and my heart broke for him. Adam may not have had it as hard as Nox, but he has not had it easy either. These two met at exactly the right time and saved each other's broken souls.

Gage is the next in the series and I'm sure it will be as heartbreaking as this one.
