Charles Soule is a #1 New York Times-bestselling novelist, comics author, screenwriter, musician, and lapsed attorney. Another brilliant issue in this series, it's awesome to see Vader at full force and being truly evil. I'm also loving Giuseppe Camuncoli's art, he's got some serious talent.
EDIT: Ok, so I should really say more than just my standard verbal response to pretty much anything (being a native Californian at least excuses my reliance on the word, right?).
This is one of my favorite series at the moment. The writing is top notch and the art is gorgeous. I grew up watching Star Wars and Doctor Who and Hollywood noir films. My early years were formed watching good guys versus bad guys and sometimes they switched sides and sometimes everyone was bad or they inhabited that grey area that most people live in, imperfect and struggling and failing as often as not.
I remember my parents taking me to see Return of the Jedi when it cam out in theaters, so I my strongest memories and views of Vader are swathed in his redemption, his love for his son overcoming the Dark Side, sacrificing himself to destroy Sidious.
This though. This story shows what Vader was like before his redemption arc in Episode VI. When he was still descending into darkness, uncovering new depths of evil and chasing power. It's raw, horrifying, powerful, and revealing. It's incredible and I can't wait to read more.
This issue picks up right where three left off. We find Vader at the bottom of the cliffs. He has been torn to pieces from his fight with the Jedi Master and he is struggling to keep himself alive. Using pieces of debris from various left over parts of droids he and the Jedi Master tossed over the cliffs during their fight, Vader slowly starts to rebuild his armor.
The scene changes to that of the Jedi Master, who is in the city. He has come to reclaim the ship he had left here sometime ago. He has a new mission now and that is to go out there and find the Sith Lord that sent Vader out and destroy him. Afterward, he hopes to rebuild the Jedi Order. Unfortunately all that will have to wait. You see since he placed himself in a quite a long time of an exile, his ship has been sitting there kinda not being used. Because of this, it will need a bit of a tune up. While discussing matters of the ship, the Jedi Master feels a stir within the force.
We find Vader has not only climbed back up the mountain but he has also rebuilt himself. During the fight between himself and the Jedi Master, Vader has realized exactly what is the Jedi Master's weakness - his compassion for life. Vader decides that he will use this against him and begins to crush the dam. This causes the Jedi to run out and face Vader again. The Jedi Master pleads with Vader to take his life, rather than the life of those below the dam. Unfortunately for the Jedi Master, Vader does just that and also takes the lives of those who lived below the dam. All this and the Jedi Master's lightsaber.
This issue was interesting. Not only was Vader forced to rebuild himself but the idea that someone had managed to one up him caused him to realize that he had a lot more to work on - especially his human emotions - in order to fully become a Sith Lord. He now has the Jedi Master's lightsaber and kyber crystal. Does this crystal become part of his lightsaber? That seems to remain to be seen. I am looking forward to seeing what happens in the next issue.
Darth Vader #4 continues to build our Sith apprentice, with his journey to obtain his own lightsaber leading to some interesting, albeit predictable twists. Nevertheless the creative team fashion yet another thrilling turn of events, with the new direction Vader goes in to obtain his goal allowing the story to stay fresh.
This went by pretty quickly but it was a lot of fun! I wish we had gotten a little more time with the Jedi Master, but his was a cool defeat to watch! Finally glad we're getting a series focused on Force users. Hopefully the books will follow suit soon.
I am extremely impressed with the quality of work from Soule.
I've said it every review to the left of this one for this series, and I shall say it again: I love this evolution of Anakin to Lord Vader. You do not see an overwhelmingly overpowered nearly unstoppable demon-god that he becomes later on in the timeline, but rather a Dark Lord that is growing in power, each moment becoming increasingly more consumed with the Dark Side, every step gaining power.
Even when he is completely unmatched on the losing end when it comes to 1:1 combat versus the hermit Jedi Master Kirak, Vader uses the classic weakness of all Jedi - their compassion for others. Very well done and honestly a movie-level quality scene for this Kirak versus Vader fight. This moment here seals the deal for 5 stars.
With Darth Vader's first major mission complete from Lord Sidious, I cannot wait to see where this comic is going to go next. The map is wide open! Let's go Soule! Where are you going to take us!
Really dig how we see Vader is truly monstrous in endangering innocent civilians as he pursues the Jedi. Come to think of it, I don't recall Vader being in this kind of situation before. At least not in canon.
Oh my. Cold blooded Sith murder in this issue. On a fairly large scale, and yet people claim Star Wars is not the place for brutal deaths. I have one Jedi Master and an entire city in this comic issue that might beg to differ on that statement.
I was a bit disappointed that there wasn’t more of a fight between Vader and Infil’a. Vader is bad ass in this issue. It’s cool to see what he has become.
