For Zack Allen, it was supposed to be a chance to get away and relax. A page turner. It was a thriller. I was terrified for the campers and was exicited to see what was going to happen next. A Hunter was on the loose of Dirfters Folly Memorial Park and killing the campers. The Hunter considers this a game. Who will survive the game. A chilling thriller that will leave you with goose bumps. An excellent read. The main charater is Zack. As he goes thru this trauma, he has his own personal demons to fight regarding Lilly his ex-girlfriend. An excellent read.

An exceptionally terrifying novel which re-illustrates for me the perfect reason I don't camp: not Bear, not Mountain Lion, not Wolf, not Rabid Possum. The fear is of Human Evil, so excruciatingly defined in A SOUND IN THE DARK.
But that's not all: in addition to the rampages of human evil, this wonderful author gives up plenty of both character evolution and devolution, finely delineated to the degree that I as reader was totally emotionally involved in the story.
One more point: I resonated with that which I perceive as Lovecraftian influences. Without detail to spoil the plot, there exist distinct otherworldly resonances....or is it mania or schizophrenia after all? This reader thinks not.

This was an amazing book. I wasn't crazy about the flashbacks, however, don't think it could have been done any differently. a wonderful rollercoaster ride.

RECENSIONE A CURA DEL BLOG "GLI OCCHI DEL LUPO" - Pamela Perretta
Zack è un ragazzo che ha passato dei momenti difficili: la sua ex ragazza si è suicidata nel suo appartamento e lui non riesce a darsi pace, poiché si sente responsabile di questa tragedia.
Quattro dei suoi amici decidono perciò di organizzare una gita in campeggio per fargli cambiare aria. I 5 si mettono così in viaggio, e arrivano al famigerato campeggio.
Qui incontrano il Ranger Fields che gli raccomanda di stare attenti poiché c'è un serial killer, chiamato “Il Cacciatore”, a piede libero, che tempo prima ha compiuto una vera e propria strage. Appena arriva la sera i ragazzi iniziano ad avere delle strane sensazioni, anche dovute a quello che gli ha raccontato Fields, e in breve si rendono conto che non sono soli all'interno del parco, ma c'è qualcuno che li spia dall'oscurità, nascosto tra gli alberi, qualcuno che ha delle intenzioni non proprio buone.
In “Un rumore del buio”, dopo una breve introduzione alle vicende, ci ritroviamo subito catapultati nel parco insieme ai 5 ragazzi. Si entra subito nel vivo della storia, che durante la lettura si sviluppa molto lentamente, ma che tiene comunque alta l'attenzione del lettore grazie alle situazioni inspiegabili in cui si troveranno i nostri protagonisti. Il punto di forza del racconto è principalmente l'habitat in cui si svolgono le vicende dei cinque amici: immaginate di trovarvi in un campeggio, isolati dal mondo esterno poiché i cellulari non hanno segnale, lontani dalla civiltà, e vi accorgete che all'interno del parco c'è una presenza, qualcuno che vi osserva senza che voi possiate vederlo, soprattutto quando cala l'oscurità e il mare di alberi si trasforma in un mare di ombre dall'aspetto inquietante.
Altro punto di forza del racconto sono le situazioni inquietanti a cui ci troviamo ad assistere, che apparentemente non hanno una spiegazione logica, poiché tutto verrà svelato verso la fine del libro, non farete altro che chiedervi “ma com'è possibile una cosa del genere?”. La situazione di per sé è molto creepy, fa nascere nel lettore un senso di inquietudine perenne, causato soprattutto dalla consapevolezza che lì fuori c'è qualcosa che ci osserva e che potrebbe attaccarci da un momento all'altro, ma non possiamo prevedere quando questo accadrà, e questo causa ancora più ansia.
Il lettore si troverà catapultato, sin dall’inizio, all'interno della storia con i cinque protagonisti, gli sembrerà di stare nel bosco con loro, di sentire ciò che sento loro, di vedere ciò che vedono loro, può avvertire la loro paura, il loro terrore, la loro angoscia.
Alcune tematiche che emergono dalla narrazione sono il valore dell'amicizia, l'istinto di sopravvivenza, e il fatto che quando ci troviamo di fronte a situazioni di pericolo imminente, o in questo caso di vita o di morte, riusciamo a trovare in noi una forza che non credevamo di avere, e se l'istinto di sopravvivenza è abbastanza forte, ci possiamo ritrovare ad agire in modi che non avremmo mai nemmeno lontanamente immaginato: Cosa saresti disposto a fare pur di salvare la tua vita? Chi saresti disposto a sacrificare?
Lo stile di scrittura è molto scorrevole e il ritmo costantemente incalzante, sin dalle prime pagine del libro, La storia è un continuo susseguirsi di situazioni ambigue e colpi di scena che rendono difficile staccarsi dalla lettura.
Un libro molto coinvolgente che sicuramente mi sento di consigliare agli amanti del genere horror/creepy/thriller, e a tutti i lettori a cui piace il brivido.

RECENSITO DA QUEEN PER IL BLOG DI "LIBRI E SOGNALIBRI"
Un libro che promette violenza fin dalle prime pagine e di violenza, in effetti, ne offre tanta; del resto, come potrebbe essere diversamente per un thriller la cui trama prevede un serial killer che insegue un gruppo di campeggiatori in un parco?
Sto parlando di Un rumore nel buio di Kyle Alexander Romines, una delle ultime proposte della collana Hope Crime.
"Quando le circostanze si facevano disperate, le prede regredivano a uno stato primitivo. Questo li avrebbe aiutati a sopravvivere per un po’. Tuttavia, prima del termine della notte, tutti i visitatori del parco sarebbero morti. Andava sempre così."
Devo dire che sono rimasta letteralmente incastrata tra le pagine di questo libro, come i personaggi anche io ho cercato un nascondiglio, una via di fuga attraverso il parco del Drifter’s Folly (in italiano “la follia del vagabondo”…) sentendo l’alito dell’assassino sul collo. Sì, perché la bravura di questo autore è di saper descrivere le scene talmente bene da farle apparire reali: vedi gli alberi, il lago con i suoi riflessi, la scogliera, la pioggia. E li senti. Senti i rumori furtivi come se intorno a te sia davvero buio e l’udito sia l’unico senso che funziona ancora.
"Adesso, nel cuore del Drifter’s Folly, Zack capì di essersi perso, in tutti i sensi. Si guardò attorno, alla ricerca di un punto di riferimento intravisto durante la giornata. Ma non c’era nulla di familiare, e comunque in quell’oscurità non sarebbe servito a molto."
Tutto il resto, i personaggi con le loro vite, le loro debolezze, i loro pensieri e le loro emozioni, non sono altro che un contorno che amplifica la sete di sopravvivenza.
Dovrei parlarvi di Zack, del suo bisogno di redenzione che si materializza in Beth, della sua forza interiore che finalmente irrompe e gli permette di non arrendersi; dovrei raccontarvi di Will, di come il lato oscuro e l’egoismo prendono in lui il sopravvento facendogli scegliere sempre se stesso; dovrei dirvi di Beth, di come apparentemente fragile e sprovveduta si rivela essere la pedina vincente per aggiudicarsi la partita col cacciatore. Dovrei dirvi di Cole, Ron, e tutti gli altri campeggiatori che provano a scappare quando il loro peggior incubo prende vita.
E invece punto i riflettori proprio su di lui, l’incubo, l’assassino efferato, il giocatore crudele: il Cacciatore.
"Le vittime inconsapevoli che avevano deciso di visitare il Drifter’s Folly quel fine settimana avrebbero avuto bisogno di tutto l’aiuto possibile. I giochi stavano per cominciare, e tutti avrebbero partecipato."
Per una volta lasciatemi parlare dell’uomo nero, di uno dei più freddi e crudeli antagonisti che potete immaginare perché non ha un movente se non quello del puro divertimento. Il Cacciatore è spietato, è lucido e anche un po’ spavaldo nelle scelte che compie e arriva sulle sue prede proprio come un perfetto predatore deve fare: silenzioso e letale, perché a rompere il silenzio basteranno le urla delle vittime.
Insomma un ottimo thriller, costruito bene, in cui fino all’ultimo il lettore resta in attesa dell’esito finale.

I can probably count on one hand the number of books I haven't been able to finish, but at 29% I just know I can't do this to myself.
Our protagonist, Zack, is an absolute drip. His backstory and flashbacks seem completely unnecessary and at odds with the thriller/horror I wanted to get absorbed in. If you'd given me a strong, empowered character who I actually wanted to survive the "Hunt" I may have been able to get on board. I say "may" because my enjoyment would still have have been hindered by the unimaginative/unecessary prose ("it was the perfect time for dinner." - it's 7pm and you just got back to camp after hiking all day, of course it's the perfect time for dinner!) and apparent use of a thesaurus for every 10th word.
Obviously a lot of people have enjoyed this book and the concept is great but this one just wasn't for me. I can also probably count on one hand the number of reviews I've written on Goodreads, but feel that this one was necessary; it was the number of positive reviews (something I look for, particularly when reading horror, as it can be such a hit/miss genre) that encouraged me to pick up this book, so I guess this is me trying to restore the balance!

Not bad. Not bad at all. I was not expecting as much because lately, just about everything I've read has left me unfulfilled. This was a scary adventure/thriller. Not much in the way of surprises but still good.

A Sound in the Dark is thrilling. Although I usually dislike horror novels, I couldn't put this one down. I initially chose to read it because I loved Kyle's first book, Keeper of the Crows. One thing I love about this author's style of writing is that he doesn't just write to scare people. He isn't in the horror genre just to induce fear. Just like in his first novel, this book has an underlying thread of hope amidst the darkness. While there are interesting, crazy, horrific things happening throughout the story, we are given glimpses into the depth of pain that the main character, Zack, is going through. I was touched to read the character's thoughts after the death of his girlfriend, and I also desperately wanted him to make it out of the woods alive. Any time I feel that attached to a character, I know the book is well-written and relatable.
I knew from the moment the characters set foot in the park that something was about to go awry. I had no idea just how awry it would go! The suspense throughout the story is captivating, and the surprising twists and turns read like a roller coaster - quick, jolting, and stomach-churning. This is a marvelous book, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a thrilling read!

Questa volta mi sono immersa in una nuova uscita della Hope Edizioni: Un rumore nel buio di Kyle Alexander Romines, un thriller capace di tenermi incollata alle sue pagine dall'inizio alla fine, ma partiamo dall'inizio.
Cinque ragazzi decidono di andare a fare una piacevole gita al Parco Statale Drifter’s Folly; armati di tenda e zaini, iniziano il campeggio coi migliori propositi. Quando cala il buio, però, si accorgono di non essere da soli. Qualcuno si nasconde nelle tenebre ed è pronto a cominciare un gioco perverso. Lo chiamano il Cacciatore, è armato e ha disseminato trappole per tutto il parco; sfuggire alla sua presa sarà un'impresa ardua, ma necessaria per sopravvivere. Egli non ha pietà, non perdona, non risparmia. Finire nelle sue grinfie significa morire.
Zack, il protagonista, è tormentato dal passato, eppure non si abbatte quando deve affrontare insieme ai suoi amici la nottata peggiore della sua vita.

Già dalla trama si preannuncia come Un rumore nel buio sia un libro carico di adrenalina. La promessa della prefazione viene mantenuta: le parole volano veloci, frenetiche, proprio come le corse che fanno i protagonisti per sfuggire dal Cacciatore. Lo stile è diretto, conciso, d'effetto. I capitoli riportano l'ora in cui si svolgono i fatti e questo dettaglio non fa che aumentare l'adrenalina nel lettore.
La narrazione in terza persona racconta la visione dei personaggi, rivelandone le caratteristiche, le paure e i desideri più profondi.
Non puoi colpire ciò che non riesci a vedere..
La storia è originale e avvincente. Mi sono piaciute l'ambientazione e le descrizioni, così mirate da farmi immaginare alla perfezione lo scenario. È come se, ogni volta che accendevo il kindle, venissi rapita dal buio della notte insieme a Zack e ai suoi amici.
Un'altra nota positiva è la bravura dell'autore nelle scene d'azione, che risultano chiare e suggestive.

Tutti potevano essere la preda di qualcun altro. L’unico modo per ottenere il potere nel mondo era quello di diventare il predatore.
Un rumore nel buio è un thriller/survival dalle sfumature horror, in cui i fatti sono fitti e inaspettati. È scorrevole e ben scritto; lo vedrei benissimo anche in una veste cinematografica.
Mi è piaciuto perché mi ha lasciato col fiato in sospeso; staccarmi dalla lettura non è stato facile. Ho provato un mix tra curiosità e inquietudine, mentre il climax saliva alle stelle. Mi ha lasciato l’impressione di aver vissuto sulla mia pelle la sensazione di pericolo e mi ha trasmesso l’elettrizzante tensione che spezza il silenzio del Parco.
Emozionante, inquietante, dinamico: ecco come riassumo questo romanzo, che consiglio a tutti gli amanti del genere. Se volete una bella carica di adrenalina, non potete perdervi questa chicca.
Un romanzo crudo e potente, che racconta la paura innata nascosta da sempre in ognuno di noi: quella di essere le prede, mentre il predatore reclama la sua vittoria.

This is definitely one of the best horror novels I've read in quite awhile. From start to finish I couldn't put it down. I felt as though I was right there with the characters through the whole novel. This is a work of art anyone who likes horror, thrillers, and/or suspense would most definitely enjoy!!!

Not worth it... and it was free
Hate to leave unhappy reviews, but this book is terrible. Reads as though it was written by an excited junior high student, with ADD. Very simplistic prose and awful dialogue. Rotten story line and wandering plot. Really bad. I want my wasted time back.

Truly a memorable read.The suspense builds up to a slow climax. One of the longest nights ,yet. A sequel will truly follow when we can join the Hunter in search of his prey.

WHAT A BOOK
This book really scared the daylights out of me. The characters were excellent; this story was very believable. I have heard of people who do this. I'm not sure I won't get nightmares. But it's quite a read. Enjoy.

A Sound in the Dark, by Kyle Alexander Romines, is a dark thriller about prey endeavoring to survive in the depths of tragedy.
Zack is struggling to move on from the loss of his ex-girlfriend, Lily. In order to cheer him up, Dave, Will, Cole, and Steve decide to go camping with him at Drifter’s Folly, a beautiful national park with a very frightening history. After a series of strange experiences, the friends soon find themselves at the mercy of a ruthless serial killer called “The Hunter”. It’s a nightmarish fight for survival, as they themselves begin to unravel with each hour past.
I enjoyed the sorrowful romance between Lily and Zack. Everything she did influenced Zack’s willingness to fight, whether it be for his life or the life of someone else’s. I personally believe Lily helped Zack to absolve him of his guilt; she was, after all, a kind girl, no matter what anyone else may say. Will, on the other hand, didn’t have that kind of nature. He sacrificed everyone just to survive, even though he came across as a nice person at first. The fact that he was the one whom Lily cheated with was also another shocker. It was because of these relationships that made the ending as immaculately bittersweet as it was. With only the ghost of memories lingering behind, I couldn’t help but ask myself if Zack really was okay with moving on. Then again, it’s not my past to dwell on.
This brings me to the theme of letting go. Zack held himself responsible for Lily’s death for the longest time. It’s the driving factor of his self-hate and, ironically, his survival. He vowed not to abandon Beth the same way he had Lily, and though he was fighting for his life, he didn’t lose himself in the end. He will have to carry on the emory of his friends for the rest of his life, but even so, I believe he’ll be fine. Hunter did try to draw out humanity’s primitivity, but in doing so, I got to see something else, something vital that contributes to people’s strength. It’s why genres such as horror and thriller are so popular; it lets us see exactly what lingers in humanity, and how far a person would go to protect their loved ones. Morality has nothing to do with it.
As such, I would give this book a rating of a 4.7 out of 5 stars. The characters demonstrated that despite their faults, they still helped each other, even if it meant them dying. They also showed that humanity isn’t as predictable as we’d like for it to be, and that’s what makes the book such a wonderful read. Because of this, I would recommend this book to those who love post-apocalyptic worlds and thrillers in general.

Lettura ideale da leggere in questo periodo, si abbina perfettamente ai giorni vicini alla festa di Halloween. Paura, terrore, un'ambientazione perfetta vi faranno vivere da protagonisti una storia degna di un thriller dalle sfumature horror.
La scrittura di questo autore mi ha letteralmente legata alle pagine, mi sono sentita protagonista, concreta e viva all'interno della storia. Accanto ai suoi personaggi ho rivissuto ogni momento le loro emozioni e i loro pensieri erano miei.
L'ambientazione, con le descrizioni minuziose che l'hanno esaltata e resa reale nella fantasia durante la lettura, permette al lettore di trasformare il tutto in un vero e proprio film nella testa, a volte le emozioni e le sensazioni, soprattutto quelle legate alla paura, sono state così vivide da scollegarmi totalmente dalla realtà facendomi sussultare, tirare un sospiro o sentire dolore, tanto è palpabile il collegamento che l'autore riesce a ricreare tra il lettore e i suoi personaggi.
I protagonisti sono pedine di un gioco macabro e letale, l'istinto di sopravvivenza giocherà brutti scherzi dividendo il gruppo e galvanizzando il predatore che li insegue.
Tensione e suspense sono la vera chicca di questa storia, l'autore è stato bravissimo anche nel finale che sono sicura vi lascerà a bocca aperta e alimenterà la vostra curiosità.

I liked this book! I found the plot to be entertaining, and I did not see the plot twist coming. I think that the characters were very well written. This book is written like you're reading a movie, and I find that writing style to be really cool. There are times where this book is very fast paced and action packed, also like a movie :)
I hope that this book is going to be turned into a series because I do have a few unanswered questions about the paranormal aspect of the story; I think some further elaboration would be fun for the readers to have due to the interesting paranormal concept. I also hope that this will become a series because of how the ending was written. I would recommend this book to my friends who like mysteries and paranormal books.

Troubles Reveal What's Deep Inside
Thriller with a touch of macabre. A group of friends on a camping trip end up fighting for their lives as killers roam the dark forest. There's gore, but most of it's not spelled out.
The moral aspect of the book was good. The stresses of the situation bring out the good and bad in certain campers. One of them is a Christian and the hope Jesus offers is touched upon a couple times.
The reasons for that theme being present are the struggles of main protagonist Zack who's depressed over his girlfriend's death. The flashback aspect telling that story was ok at first, but it started to annoyingly break up the suspense later on.

Great book!
Plot twists and turns galore! Some I saw coming, others I didn’t. Still, I really enjoyed A Sound in The Dark including all of the background stories and friends tales and character build up. Seeing (I believe honestly) how a group of people might react in a crisis and life/death situation. Of course some are going to react better than others. I did figure some things out (yay me!) but I’ve been reading mysteries, horror and suspense since I was 9 voraciously, and I’m 46 now! Ha! But it in no way dampened my reading experience. I would love to see another in this series and will read more by this Author!

I stopped this one at the %53 mark. From the beginning this novel came across as a "rough copy". It never felt finished, or edited properly.
The character development was nearly nonexistent. The author tried making us care about the group of "friends" though he fell short, as I couldnt have possibly cared less. There were attempts at flashbacks throughout though they were very cumbersome and added nothing but confusion to the story.
I didnt feel laboring through the remainder of the book would have resulted in a higher opinion, so I called it a valiant effort to have read over half.
I suggest a solid pass on this one.

I had low expectations of this thriller from the start. And the book came in below standard. First off is the author's unsure timeline of how long the serial killer has been hiding in the park setting up his traps. There are at least 12 snares/pits/trip wires the victims set off, which couldn't have been set up in just a few weeks, even if the killer had help. Oops, maybe that's a little spoiler but that's fine, I'll save you the trouble of reading this... the plot was predictable, and the story doesn't really have an ending. It's like watching a B- horror flick, trite lines and simple plot.

I really enjoyed this book. I wasnt a fab of some of the characters Will and Dave just annoyed me. But Zach and his traffic background really pulled me in. Although I did predict some of the things that happened, such as, there being 2 killers and Feilds being one of them. I had Feilds pegged as one of them once he gave them the two way radio. Then with what happened to both groups like that and all the traps put in place it just makes sence for there to really be two people. Though I really did enjoy reading the story.

Outstanding!
I both loved and hated this book. It was full of twists and turns. It was fast action and not the kind of book you would EVER EVER read on a camping trip. I found some of the book a bit predictable, the body count was very high, but the plot was flawless and I am going to read this author again. But there is a warning, if you are afraid of the dark don't read this book at night, well ever, you will be looking over your shoulder and your heart will beat faster , and the snap of a twig might very well send you running headlong into evil . Good luck.

Scary...
First off, I usually don't read books like this. I don't like serial killers, hunters or stalkers...yet this book looked interesting so I thought to try it. If you like action, mind games and terror you'll like this book.
The characters were well written. The angst & despair that Zack felt really came across. It's also good to really know who you're friends are.

This book is an exciting, suspenseful, horror novel. Five friends go camping to relax and have fun. After several strange, scary experiences, the friends soon realize they are at the mercy of a ruthless serial killer call "The Hunter". The night is a nightmarish fight for survival. Unfortunately, not everyone survives. I definitely could not go camping after reading this! I received a free copy of this book for an honest review. 4 stars
