Dead Streets is the last of three very enjoyable novels that blend horror and humor with urban fantasy and private-eye tropes. The first one was originally published in trade format by Five Star as Necropolis in 2004, and a few years later Angry Robot re-released it as Nekropolis in a mass market pocket edition, as well as the other two. I was at first little lost by some of the changes (how long did it take to replace all of those c's with k's?) but found my way fairly swiftly. (I've still never read the expanded Angry Robot edition of the first book, just the original. Not to be confused with novels by Maureen McHugh or Dan Abnett.) Anyway, the series stars Matt Richter, a wise-cracking zombie detective in a world of the supernatural, a little edgier and darker than Green's Nightside or Resnick's Mallory stories. The second one, Dead Streets, and this one were quite a bit longer than the first edition of the first book, with a little gorier content, or so it seemed to me. This one is a vast, panoramic, apocalyptic, cosmic story, but manages to keep the human (well, you know) element, too, especially in the relationship between Matt and his half-vampire lady love Devona. Lots of fun! This one is rather poorly copy-edited, and the annoying errors do become a distraction. It's a shame that the publisher didn't have Waggoner continue the story; the ending is something of a cliff-hanger, though if you squint you can call it a conclusion.

It took me a while to get into this series, but now I'm sure I'll be following it to its conclusion -- which I certainly hope this book wasn't, with that ending. It's opening out more and more from a simple story of a PI whose gimmick is that he's a zombie: he just saved the underworld for the third time and there's no way he's getting out of the spotlight now. Besides, his wife's bearing twins.

The writing improves throughout the three books, or at least I didn't notice as many things that jarred here. I did notice some typos -- skipped punctuation and the like -- which should ideally have been caught, but eh. He has a female character front and centre, for the most part -- less so in this book because of the kidnapping thing that goes on, but she's still there and pretty kickass, and there are other strong female characters as well. Pretty good, for something based on the PI/noir genre.

Not the highest of literature, maybe, but fun.

I received this book via Goodreads First Reads.

This review is TERRIBLY late but here goes…I have enjoyed this series very much – I purchased Nekropolis and Dead Streets on my Sony Reader (am I the only person who doesn’t have a Kindle – grr!) because I won the third book!

I thoroughly enjoy Matt Richter and the undead detective/underworld idea. I believe that this book would be fine if read alone but I highly recommend reading the books in order – you miss out on sooo much if you don’t!

I do not want to include any spoilers in my review but Dark War follows our favorite zombie private eye, Matt, as he once again tries to save the world – this time against a more ominous presence than before, causing the “last battle” to ensue. Waggoner does a great job describing the dark and sordid city of Nekropolis and I personally found Dis and the Darklords interesting. I really enjoyed the ending of this book and the news Matt had to break to Devona!! :)

Bottom line: I found the book to be an easy read, full of action and colorful descriptions. I was pleased to read that Mr. Waggoner is adding on to the series – I can’t wait to read the next book in this captivating series!

I received this book through a firstreads giveaway.

This is an amazing series thus far, and I eagerly await the next installment. I have been a fan of Simon R Green for a bit over a year now, and so I was very excited to get a free copy of this book, which seemed very like The Nightside. I immediately bought the Kindle versions of the two previous Matt Richter books, which are fairly inexpensive. These are also excellent, although they feel like displaced Green novels. This one is entirely unique. It draws heavily on the other novels, but is likely readable by those who have not read the series.

Waggoner has found his stride in the urban fantasy genre, and it would greatly surprise me if his subsequent Richter novels are not equally engaging. Please, Angry Robot and Tim Waggoner, more!

Dark War was a great conclusion to the Matt Richter series. Tim Waggoner did a bang up job of bringing together all the disparate elements from the earlier parts of this series and ending things in an enjoyable way-answering a lot of questions and still leaving room for more stories at the same time.

Dark War (Matt Richter #3) by Tim Waggoner is the conclusion to the Matt Ritcher series. What could be better than a mystery series led by a detective named Matt Ritcher? How about a story that also includes pretty much every urban fantasy supernatural creature imagined? Hey, why not have the protagonist be an undead...zombie? Make it all fit together by taking place in a world adjacent to our own... This is the making of fun stuff.

This really is a dream series for urban fantasy lovers that enjoy a bit more satire and current culture references in their books. Matt is a private investigator who happens to be undead, and who also happens to be the only self aware zombie ever known, and also is an excellent cop, and finally is a man with a hot half vampire girlfriend who isn't afraid to be a monster.

Dark War is a page turner that I found to be a great deal of fun. I really enjoy the writing style of Waggoner and the characters that lead the way. The combination of action along with the humor makes the series fun, and that is probably what is most important. I could read these books all of the time.

Nekropolis explained...

"Monsters are real. So are witches and ghosts and just about any other thing you can think of that goes bump in the night. They co-existed alongside humanity for thousands of years, peacefully enough for the most part. But several centuries ago Father Dis –who supposedly was worshipped as a god of death by the Romans –decided that humans were becoming too numerous and more importantly too dangerous to share the planet with."

This is an easy read that I enjoyed a great deal.

Received a free copy via Goodreads First reads.

I've really enjoyed this series (picked up #1 & #2 because I won #3 :)). It's a unique concept for a series, both from a setting as well as character standpoint. I highly recommend reading the books in order to get the full impact of the story.

Without giving too much away about the series, this book follows Matt (main character) as he once again tries to save the world and remain in one piece. It's been entertaining to see his development as a character, as well as how he finds his place in the world he now inhabits. And I'm not sure if Mr. Waggoner meant to do this, but I think Matt is a walking (or limping) billboard for Murphy's Law!

I haven't yet found a section of any of these books I didn't like or felt was slow. And based on the teasers provided, I'll be awaiting the next two books (one set between Dead Man and Dark War) and one set after this one (Dark War). Tim, I hope you're writing fast!!!

This is the third book in the Matt Richter series by Waggoner. I really continue to enjoy this series and was sad to see that this was the last book released in this series (most likely because of Angry Robot publishing shutting down).

After solving a particularly strange case in an alternate dimension, Matt and Devona end up joining up with a new character named Shamika and trying to unravel the mystery behind a whole bunch of magic users who have gone missing.

This series continues to remind me a lot of Simon Green’s Nightside series. There are a lot of wacky and zany things in the Nekropolis and I continue to enjoy the creativity and unpredictability of it all.

Things were really picking up in this series and I was incredibly disappointed to find out that this was the last book released in the series. I just enjoy the quirkiness and humor so much in these books and would love to read more about this world and these characters

Overall this was a great continuation of the Matt Richter series. This series is a wonderful blend of mystery, urban fantasy, horror, and humor. I was very disappointed to see this was the last book in the series. I would definitely recommend to fans of Simon Green’s Nightside series.

This was such an amazing "conclusion." I say that, because at the time, it was. However, being a Graphic Audio fan, I know that they recently released a sequel short story after this book. I can't wait to listen to it.

If you've ever found yourself wondering what it would be like to live as a Zombie Detective in an alternate universe ruled by Darkfolk Lords and monsters, then this is the book for you! Dark War, by Tim Waggoner, is the third book in this action-packed, Urban Fantasy series featuring "Matt Richter. Private Eye. Zombie" as the chief character and narrator. Richter is supported through his journeys by an all-star cast that consists of his wife, Devona, a Human-Vampire half mix, a seemingly young woman that goes by the name of Shamika and a Pureblood Vampire, Varney, who is assigned the task of filming Richter on his adventures. Though there are many other very important supporting characters, Devona, Shamika and Varney are the three that are by his side throughout, nearly, the entire story.

I could only find one bad thing to say about Dark War... whomever was in charge of proofreading really slacked off. There were far too many instances of simple words like "to" and "of" being either left out of the sentence or being repeated, like, "to to". However, what I found most important weren't proofing errors, but the way I was drawn into the story from the very beginning, with the first few pages being more than a little gruesome. Wagonner does an amazing job of familiarizing you with the characters and their background very early in the story. I, myself, have not had the opportunity to read Nekropolis or Dead Streets, the two novels that proceeded Dark War. Even if you haven't read the first two books, Tim Waggoner has developed the plot and story line in a way that fills the reader in on previous events while still advancing the current.

Dark War was a perfect mix of Science Fiction, Fantasy, Comedy and Horror. Though I felt that many scenes were a little "spoofy" or "cheesy", I also felt that there was plenty of action and gore to level it out. I imagine the creatures that traverse the streets of Nekropolis to look something like what you'd see on Comedy Central's "Ugly America" series. I found it especially comical, on page 330, when Matt and his team are entering the Hidden Light and are introduced to a weremadillo who gives Richter "...a hard look. 'Don't mess with Texas,' [Houston] growled." I found that single exchange very worthy of a good chuckle. It was silly, but fun. In the middle of all this mayhem, there's this witty, zany exchange between a Zombie PI and a weremadillo named Houston, of all things... It just makes me smile. There were several other instances of comedy like this throughout.

I will definitely be reading Nekropolis and Dead Streets in the future, along with trying out some of Tim Waggoner's other works of fiction. I would be especially excited to see Waggoner expand on the series and give us a taste of what it's like for Devona and Matt post childbirth. The way Dark War ends leads me to believe that Waggoner may already be heading in the right direction. Here's to hoping I get to read and review many more books put out by Time Waggoner and The Robot Army! I hope you enjoy Dark War just as much as I did!!

ALL THE LOVE!!!
Review: After falling to pieces and getting thorough all of that, Matt Richter really just wants to settle down with half-vampire girlfriend Devona. But, this being Nekropolis. That’s really unlikely. After sorting stuff out in parallel world, he goes home to find even more problems. The Arcane (witches and wizards) are blaming the Demonfolk for recent Arcane disappearances. The Demonfolk aren’t happy and a war threatens to break out. But there’s something else bugging Matt…
Following my total love for Nekropolis and Dead Streets, of course I had to get hold of this. I like the fact that old favourites are brought back especially Lazlo, his tazi, and Vavara. I didn’t like the return of Gregor, but that’s only because he’s annoying and hard to understand. But he is essential to the plot, so I can’t really complain.
The darkly funny, slightly sarcastic writing style from the earlier books acre carried over into this one. I love Tim’s writing style and there’s always something to make me laugh.
There’s a ridiculously varied cast. From zombie detectives to demon overlords (well, lady. You get the idea) to scarily intelligent oversize bugs- you name it, you’ll find some variation on it.
Plot wise, it’s a bit different, with all out war between (factions? Districts? Denominations?) of paranormal creatures brewing. I like the fact it’s something a bit different, but still believable for this kind of book.
Benny makes a welcome, major-y appearance. I really love Benny in both forms. Because demon-y thingys that shift gender every few seconds are just cool like that. Vavara comes a close second, followed by Matt, Devona and Varney the Vampire (reporter that tags along to everything). I feel really attached to all the inhabitants of Nekropolis now…
The ending. Damn. The really important bit happens in eleven lines, and leaves your imagination to run wild. I can’t spoil it for you, but wow. A whole new world just waiting to be explored. And no news of a fourth book.

Overall: Strength 5 tea to a strong finale(?) to a series I really love.

The story begins with Matt Richter -- zombie PI -- and his beloved, half-vampire Davona, helping Darius, the Sideways Man, to fight Hydes who are making havoc at alternate Nekropolis. This opening sequence throws me a bit because Darius is a new character that hasn't been introduced before. So, even if it opens with an action fight, I have a bit trouble to hang on to the story.

Then, it gets a bit domestic, when Davona, who turns out to be pregnant in this book, , ends up having trouble with the pregnancy. I'm still not into Matt and Davona's romance very much, so the whole pregnancy issue is not something I actually care about.

Luckily, the story then picks up its pace very quick, when three Arcanes under Talaith, Queen of the Arcane are destroying bridges, asking Varvara, Queen of the Demons, to return missing magic-users. After that, it's all good adventure!! Papa Chaith, one of Matt's friends, are also missing, and Matt (along with Davona, Varney, a new vampire introduced in this book, and Shamika, Papa's niece) must find out the missing magic-users to avoid open wars between the two Darklords. I totally enjoy the twists given, finding out who is responsible behind it all (which related to book #1, very smart, Mr. Waggoner)!!

Now, the ending leaves me wanting more. But I heard that this is a trilogy only?? That is just not fair!! I want more adventure of Matt, zombie-PI extraordinaire. Plus there a lot of juicy things can come out from that plot alone ...

Oh, well, over all, it has been a fun ride. Even if the first 20% of this book drags a bit ...

In compliance with FTC guidelines: I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

Very entertaining, dark, witty, and well-paced novel following the exploits of Matt Richter, a private detective who happens to be the only self-willed zombie in Nekropolis. Alongside him are three other interesting characters: his love and partner, Devona, a half-human, half-vampire woman, Varney, a full-blood vampire, and Shamika, who is a new character in this series.

The world-building continues to be fascinating, with each novel in the series adding more depth to the environs and the DarkFolk living there.

I'm glad to say that despite a few small editing issues (and at least one minor continuity error), that this was a much more readable novel than the Kindle version was of the second novel, making it a bigger pleasure to read.

Out of the three books, I found the third to be the weakest of the three. By now the characters are established, things are going along swimmingly, and all should be good...right?
Unfortunatly no.
Though still chalk full of little Easter eggs, witty dialogue, and a really good joke here or there, the general story just doesn't come across as interesting as the last two books. It's not that bad of a read, and I still enjoyed the story, but as far as something that will keep you on the edge of your seat and flipping pages, this isn't it. The plot doesn't move as fast as it seems it should, and the mystery of who started the war just doesn't grasp the reader as much as it could.
But again, if you enjoyed the other two books, you will enjoy this one as well.
I still hope there will be more in this series.

I like Waggoner's Nekropolis series and this, the third in the series, doesn't disappoint as Matt Richter, Waggoner's Zombie detective continues to solve the problems of this dark realm.
These easy reading novels are a good mix of fantasy, humour and detective noir and Waggoner's strange characters are well realised and the plots complex enough to hold your attention all the way through. For a light hearted read for those who like something a little on the weird side I thoroughly recommend this and the previous two novels in the series.

Do you like a good thriller? Do you like surprising plot turns? Do you like a book that keeps you guessing till the end? DO YOU LIKE ZOMBIES?! Then this is definitely the series for you, Matt Richter, zombie PI is a brilliantly written character filled with self humor and a sharp mind (as well as a few discomposing body parts) that solves mysteries and saves the world in a fun and thrilling way. The fact that the story takes place in a city of undead and mythical beings adds a whole new level to these kind of books. Greatly recommended.

I was reluctant to start this series, as I tend not to like books about zombies, but I am so glad I did! This third book in the series, which I received as part of the goodreads giveaway, lives up to the standard set by the first two. It is humorous, has plenty of action, and, of course, has the requisite mystery. But do be aware that it is a little dark. Don't, however, let that drive you away, either. Do yourself a favor and read this series. You won't regret it; I didn't.

I really enjoyed the third instalment to this series and I really hope that Tim Waggoner write more books set in Necropolis. I highly recomend this series for anyone who loves Urban fantasy and is looking for something quirky as refreshing.

So not fair that this is apparently the end of the series. He did that mega-cliffhanger on purpose, I just know it! Gyah! But yeah, an amazing book all around, possibly-never-to-be-resolved-cliffhanger included. I just absolutely adore this series, and loved every page of each book.

I am still comparing these to the Nightside series, but I find that the universe's although similar, have enough differences to be entertaining. It does kind of end with an interesting cliffhanger and I would love to see what happens next!
