Got bored right before the chapter featuring raging homophobia. It honestly shocks me how readers were okay with that tirade. Good translations though!

4 stars, since I feel like it dragged on at the end.

It's a Wuxia story with a female protagonist. It's overall, a rather short (compared to other Chinese translated novels) and fun romance novel. I'd recommend it if you're looking for something interesting pass the time~

3.5 | okay. i enjoyed this novel a lot, honestly. i love the fact that we have all the wuxia elements but also the mixture of modern day internet slang/culture - zhu yao is honestly such a good character, it’s so refreshing to read about a strong, smart, and kind female character. yeah but.
my main problem was the length of this novel - i had to take a break somewhere in the middle because it was really, just So Much. i definitely feel like it’ll be better off half the length but i suppose i do see why it’s so long (everything had to develop and connect). also really sad how some characters never reappeared after a reincarnation/movement to another world like. yeah u have yue ying and yu yan but like????? little radish and mushmush???? good characters i want more :( (also the romance was kinda wack everyone saw it coming miles away but it still felt weird and kinda too much in my face tbh.) lastly. this may just be me being sensitive but like? was there really the need for zhu yao to act all shook/scandalized whenever one character looks like they like another character of the same gender? and unsure if it was written like this or if it was the translator’s choice but damn. why did i have to read the word homosexual buddy at least 20 times in the last arc? it just feels like the author/translator is making fun of the lgbtq community and saying that being gay is their only defining trait which is. ugly to say the least.

tl;dr: i really hate when hets add lgbtq characters for the sole purpose of a humor break.

'My Disciple Died Yet Again' is a quirky novel in a format that reminds a lot more of a tv show of several seasons than a book. On one hand, by the separation of "missions" through the arcs, on the other hand, by a writing style that is rather visual. With its eccentric characters, pop culture references and a heavy reliance on humour over logic, it is a fun and entertaining read. For the most part.
Unfortunately the structure makes it feel incredibly repetetive and truly drags on, as every new arc comes with a setback in cultivation, new setting, characters etc, at the price of some more character development. Unfortunately, the plot relies heavily on a main character that is goodhearted and lightheartedly violent (I guess... it's for laughs?), but whose main attribute is the ability to not change... at all. So we have a main character who is maybe not perfect, but still sold as 'ideal person' in many ways, which leads to the read dragging on weven more.
Coming back to it feeling like a written tv shows, rather than going towards a goal, the structure of this is more circular. Whenever one thinks there is some actual overarching plot, it just reverts back to another new "mission".
Unfortunately the ending does not fix this issue with a really clever tie up of all the events in the previous Arcs, but instead relies on a pretty generic: "It's all to make the world a better place through this chosen heroine" logic. The solution relies on a pretty creepy, almost authoritarian solution, while most side characters are simply dropped.
Leaving aside a lot of pretty offensive terminology in the handling of both obesity and homosexuality, which are constantly playes for jokes (and for homosexuality being unnatural and a problem that needs solving.... great...), it is, if considered as one book, really a piece of light entertainment.
I acknowledge that under the consitions of writing (regular updates, chapter by chapter on a blog) of these chinese novels, it is possibly a bit unfair to rate this as I would a 1 volume book, but after reading the works of MXTX (Mo Dao Zu Shi etc), it is clearly possible to still write a plot-heavy, cohesive novel. This is is considerably less professional.
That said it is not horrible, I assume it is really hit or miss. If you expect a novel, even if it's comedic entertainment, to have a satisfactory build up and solution, then this seems indeed rather sloppy. If you are only reading it for distraction, focusing on humour, pop-culture references and simple characters, I am sure this has a lot of potential. I just expected a tiny little bit more plot and character delelopment in a work of this length.

To be clear, I didn't finish this whole book. There are 12 arcs / 395 chapters total, and I got through the first 6 arcs / 195 chapters. Maybe I will revisit this again someday, but the whole cycle of reviving and removing the bug in a new mission kinda got old. To be fair, we finally found out a little bit more at the end of arc 6, and Realmspirit did promise to spill the beans after Zhu Yao's next mission, but who knows.

I enjoyed seeing what kind of new form she'd return in each time. The bigender form reminded me a bit of the main character in Ranma 1/2. The dragon was probably my favorite, given how she was able to subdue all demonic beasts with her presence, including the devil-inhabited rabbit god at the end. The piece of jade rock was the most interesting, since she kept on ending up with owners she didn't care for.

I did get a kick out of the main character's internal monologue. She was quite funny and had a very blunt way of putting things. I read on mainly for her and for the romance. Speaking of which, I kept waiting for the romance to get further along, and after 195 chapters in, I gave up on Zhu Yao's completely clueless master, Yu Yan. For example, see the below interaction between them right before I dropped, where Zhu Yao is trying to take off his clothes and sleep with him:

Yu Yan took the outer garments, turned to look at her unknowingly, and then approached her. His two hands brushed past the sides of her waist, forming a kabe-don posture. He gradually leaned closer… and closer…

And then…

He put his outer garment on her.

“If you wanted this mystic robe, say so directly.”

Crackle.

Zhu Yao heard the sound of something shattering. That was her dead young maiden’s heart…

She really was stupid to the point of piercing through the sky, for believing that a certain someone could have been enlightened!

A certain master, however, stabbed her with another knife with a stern look.

“I placed down a special defensive formation on this mystic robe, and regular people aren’t able to move it.”

Puaaah! A steel knife stabbed right into her heart.

“Though, the size might be a little big for you.”

Puaaah! She received an additional 1000 damage.

“If you sincerely like it, your master shall help change it to your size tomorrow.”

Puaaah! Her heart received long-lasting damage.

“I shall make some others for you while I’m at it as well. Mn… You seem to have grown a little fatter.”

Puaaah! Her HP was emptied!

It's a pretty long novel, and as per the summary, it involves quite a few rounds of reincarnation.

TBH, the premise is unique compared to the other novels I have read. It involves QT/ reincarnation, but it plays out differently from most other novels using these kind of tropes. While there were brainless "FL" characters, I am fairly relieved that MC/FL was not that dumb. I felt that she was pretty headstrong/ idealistic with a strong sense of ideals. She may make some dumb decisions unwittingly, but it does not really elicit an exasperated face-palm moment.

The novel was pretty hilarious - I love the comments/ commentary provided by FL, and it does have some tear-jerking/ heartwrenching moments as well. As usual, we have very cold, stoic and handsome ML(s). I agree with one review regarding the homophobic tirade... I felt that it was pretty unnecessary. It seems the author does not really approve of same-sex relationships, although she does not joke/ suggest it sometimes, but there is a ps moment like "oh, they can actually identify themselves as either gender".

However, I still like reading this novel, and it has been quite a while since I could immerse myself in a novel for a long period of time.

"My Disciple Died Yet Again" is one of the few titles that popped up multiple times when I started looking for recommendations for female-led xianxia novels (I really liked watching The Untamed, and really liked their female characters, but mostly came away wanting more of them. Since the novel of that is going to take a while, I thought I'd try a few others.)

I feel like I could spend some time about how absolutely WILD it is, flailing about in the wildernesses of amateur translations. There's SO much weird drama, there's footnotes that go from passive aggressive (this translator just links to wikipedia, which I think is hilarious) to like, squeeing translator inserts, or footnotes that just don't exist for some ...more obscure content... but there's clearly this community doing a lot of work for free on really intense schedules, which is just :O. I appreciate their work immensely.

ANYway what I am looking for in these xianxia novels (and finding) feels like classic pulp - it's incredibly readable, the action moves along, and (perhaps this is different) there are character relationships you want to see develop. In My Disciple Died Yet Again there's all those things and also a lot of humor, but frequently slapstick/cultural misunderstandings sort of thing. The best humor is when it's about someone being incredibly sincere and caring and going over the top. The worst is the characters that are mostly just fat jokes. However, there does appear to be some heart in it, and I appreciate that and also the competent/accessible translation.

Also this is a series of 12 books, not one, so I'm going to mark it as read/reread for however many books I actually finish.

Dropped at chapter 144/393. I almost dropped it at chapter 30 at first because it was so so slow, but then it picked up and was great and I had a bunch of belly aching laughs. And then it reset and then got boring again and then picked up a bit, and then it reset. After the fifth (?) reset I’m just really tired. Like, just thinking about having to go through this for another 250 chapters makes me want to lie down in bed for a few days.

I quite like the MC, actually. There’s just not much else about the plots or other characters that really stands out much for me. I was holding on for some romance but I realized that it wasn’t going to happen any time soon. Many many many other things would get in the way and the progress was like watching a huge program loading on an old computer: futile and infuriating. I’ll reserve my time for something more worthwhile.

Now this one is not recommended.
It's a great idea, but it quickly goes from being a parody to being exactly the same sort of story it was making fun of. About halfway through the author loses the plot and stops all character development. By the end it feels like a bad videogame, going from fetch quest to fetch quest. To top it all, not only it ends in a cliffhanger, the author also left several plotlines hanging from older arcs.

But Is It Funny? Only if you don't mind the casual sexism, homophobia, transphobia and colorism.

This is one of those books with a weird but usual theme. Fortunately, the plot was so different that it's comical and a face-palm at the same time. If you want to be entertained, then enter this weirdly, coolish, game novel.

The book started off great. Unique plot, unexpected twist but then it got too draggy which is pretty common in chinese webnoles as I heard the authors there got paid based on the length of the book. Need to get the yuan I guess.

This book made me laugh uncontrollably until the very last chapter. This is exactly that one where the chosen FL hated the idea of being the chosen one but the ML just wont let her go.
