This is me rating a cutesy chapter with an okay rating because of my frustration on the match between the two basketball teams. Ugh. And also because Naruse Shou's being senpai obsessed but not in a good way. I mean, I love his character to bits but nope, this is not it.
Niente.
I just don’t think a whole ton is happening. Still wishing our FMC was more sure of herself. It just seems like she creates a lot of issues on her head and by not communicating. Oh but you do not have to ask your partner to join a club or get a job.
Okay I am loooooving their relationship development. There's a bit of....well Naruse is kind of controlling and definitely like codependent relationship vibes. But I eat that up in (fictional) romance. And there's also a bit of just....lack of communication between them?? And I could see that getting frustrating for some readers. But to me it just reads really realistic - the uncertainty and doubt with a relationship like that. But talk about a slow burn - they have been 'dating' for awhile now and there's not been too much happening. But I'm loving this change up of her getting her own place and going to college and the new characters introduced.
the only issue i have, which is quite major is naruse's possessiveness. it's bordering on controlling now and I'm not happy with that because he's such a sweetie otherwise. like, you can be concerned for her safety but you can't tell her where not to go and whom to hang out with or not. what confuses me even more is that it is addressed in the manga but no satisfying conclusion us reached. yuki says that she doesn't like it if he gets so jealous, but also dislikes it if he shows complete disinterest which is totally fair. i hope this will be addressed more properly and naruse will grow out of it because it's toxic otherwise.
Yuki is still getting settled into her new apartment, and decides that getting her first part-time job is the next logical step. Meanwhile, Naruse is getting ready for his last chance at winning the Kanto tournament against Misuzu and his rival, Hakamada.
I'm a hopeless romantic, and as such, I am a sucker for fluffy love stories. What I like most about this particular manga is how realistic it is in showing two very different people trying to figure out what works for them, all while framed in the awkwardness of first love.
The biggest issue for this couple has long been their lack of communication or their ongoing misunderstandings of one another--a staple of the genre, honestly--and while it's getting better it still is very much the biggest thing holding them back. Add that onto the mix of jealousy and aimlessness that comes from being in two very different chapters of life (Yuki now a freshman in college, Naruse finishing out his last year of high school) which is further putting stress on them and, by extension, their relationship.
I still have big hopes for this series, but know that some people are burned out with how redundant the communication issues are. I've seen fan-translations a little further than this and know that there's a lot more that we haven't seen yet, so I hope readers will stick around!
Cheeky Brat is a thoroughly enjoyable young romance. Yuki is the high school basketball team manager, a very stoic and dedicated individual who is always professional in her job and in her personal life. Stumbling upon her when she's showing an unusual bit of emotion, Haruse, the team's cheeky playboy, is intrigued with Yuki and pursues her romantically. Their romance continues to be about opposites that attract. Her dedication to avoiding romance is infuriating, but it doesn't make it any less enjoyable to read. I see many comparisons to Maid Sama, but My Little Monster also comes to mind. I enjoyed the story, and especially the likeably awkward third point on the love triangle. Additionally, the illustrations, especially those of the basketball players, are excellent.

Yuki has started her life as a college student. New classes, new students, new neighbors, new job, new temporary club activity, same old Naruse… or is he?
Naruse and Yuki are still trying to figure out their (now official and public) relationship while also figuring out how to do that while they’re apart food most of the week.
Lots of jealousy, lots of confusion, but they’re trying and making progress little by little. And I like how the story extends past high school, makes the characters feel more real.
And I still hate Naruse’s jealousy. And Yuki is still a little stiff around him. Haven’t they been dating for at least 6 months yet???!
I should just stop reading this series but then there’s those once in awhile cute moments that make me hold on… *sigh* It’s a struggle with shojo, I swear.
I love this series but I will continue to be frustrated over the relationship aspect sometimes. Sometimes she can be so frustrating with how long it takes for her to get it.
