Life was relaxed and carefree, right? Not the case for young Mac MacKenna. His father is an alcoholic. His mother is an enabler. His sister is a moody nursing school attendee who, like Mac, hopes to move away from home as soon as possible. Before Mac can escape the drama and repugnance of his home life, he goes head-to-head with his father in an attempt to make life better for his mother and grandfather. As high school graduation day and freedom are within reach tragedy strikes Mac’s family. There’s only one person to blame for the unthinkable crime—his father—Mac vows to get to the truth.
I'm so glad I read this book, having read Unknown Threat a few months earlier.
I really enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about a younger Mac, the main character, his family and the challenges he faces in his life prior to his decision to enlist in the U.S airforce, in this, the prequel to the first book.
Robin Lyons is a wonderful storyteller and I have enjoyed these two books immensley!
I enjoyed going back to meet Mac as a teenager, to see the events that helped shape him into the man he became. This story is a short but powerful statement on alcoholism, abuse, and the fissures of dysfunction within family dynamics when addiction is a factor.
If you've already read the other books in this series, MAC is a perfect flashback to where it all began.
I liked Cole 'Mac' MacKenna in Unknown Threat. Before he joined the U.S. Air Forces Special Operations and before he became the School Marshal at Blackstone Academy he had a rocky childhood.
Then a shocking death in the family. Murder?
Some families will not intervene when a parent is an alcoholic. Not so with the MacKenna family. Mac and his sister intervened. Yet, their mother (sadly, a typical wife in this kind of situation) became a facilitator, by making excuses.
I enjoyed this novella for it took me deeper into the life of Mac. I look forward to the next book.
A heart-rending novel about a high school student on the cusp of graduation is pressured by his dysfunctional family to decide his future.A story that touches you in ways you won't expect.
