Rate this book
For the past 40 years original pioneers of punk The Damned have been thrilling fans across the world with their awesome, yet often unpredictable live performances and genre defining music. In 2017 The Damned are still going strong and along the way have influenced countless other bands that would follow in their footsteps such as Black Flag, Nirvana, Rancid, Bad Brains, Green Day, Offspring, TSOL and Guns n’ Roses to name but a few. This biography, written by longtime fan and author of a popular Damned website ‘Second Time Around’, Barry Hutchinson, celebrates the first 20 years – often referred to as the Chaos Years, and arguably the most prolific of the band’s history. It records their crazy antics both on and off stage, their often troublesome gigs and their memorable music. With exclusive interviews from all band members past and present, plus never before published photos, this book is a must read for all Damned fans wanting an insight to the band’s iconic history.

Well researched and balanced look at the first twenty years of the Damned. First punk band to release a single, release an album, tour America and split up. The line up with Lu Edmonds and Jon Moss was my first Damned gig. Next was the Doomed with Gary Holton not knowing the lyrics. Barry Hutchinson claims that the audience at Clouds wasn't happy. I thought that most enjoyed it, even if it was shambolic but we were just happy to see them back. Now the Captain was a bit naughty that evening resulting in a short ban from playing gigs in Edinburgh. Perfect for me as they chose my home town for my next Damned gig.

I digress. The Damned have had numerous line ups over the years with falling out a common theme. From the classic first line up, that had all four members as strong willed characters. I have even seen (and enjoyed) the Not of this Earth line up. Aye, they have played some poor gigs over the years, but this applies to virtually every band. A bit of a shame that Rat Scabies is no longer involved. I would have said the same about Brian James but he only wanted to play Damned songs from his spell with them. Did see the original line up on their "farewell tour".

Definitely a book aimed at fans of the Damned, written by a huge fan of the band who has also written a book about the Phantom Chords (seen them live too) but this should also appeal to fans of punk rock in general. An interesting look back at one of the main players in the UK punk rock scene.

Dampened fans will enjoy.

Enjoyed reading the history of one of my all time favourite bands. I had never realised the twists and turns in line ups over the years.
