The World after the End of the World will never be the same again…
Sanctuary. Clichéd name, but the sentiment is still the same. Ten years after the end of the world, ex-soldier Mason and a small group of humans defend their fortified town against creatures of myth and legend made real. But with dwindling game to hunt and a lycan pack in the area looking for an easy meal, just surviving is getting harder every day.
Andy has a few screws loose, and she knows it. She’s been on the road since the bombs fell and changed humanity forever. Driven by inhuman instincts, she tracks the newly and soon-to-be dead and dispatches their souls to the afterlife. Sometimes they go quietly, most put up a fight. She doesn’t care either way. Her ambition in life is to find her next hit of coffee and one day, maybe, sleep in a real bed again.
Then Andy’s instincts bring her to Sanctuary and its enigmatic leader, Mason, and even the world after the end of the world will never be the same again…
Warning: Contains a snarky female Reaper with a hair-trigger temper and a caffeine addiction, a hot ex-commando with an attitude and a twisted sense of humor and a happily ever after that defies death itself.

Mina Carter is a New York Times & USA Today bestselling author of romance in many genres. She lives in the UK with her husband, daughter, a puppy who pays no attention to her whatsoever, and a bossy cat.
I loveva creative story, and this one definitely is. Andy is fascinating-a Grim Reaper more interesting than many of the others i have read. No, i take that back. She may just be The best. And the hero and townspeople are well drawn. Overall, it was great.
Earth, post-apocalypse, is changed forever when a scientific experiment changes the very fabric of life. Predatory zombies, werewolves, sorcerers, vampires, brownies, and more are common place requiring humans to band together in fortified towns to protect themselves.
One such place is Sanctuary. A fortified settlement that has survived the odds for the last ten years because of the efforts of Mason, ex military commando, who has devised physical and paranormal traps to keep predators out. That, along with every adult knowing how to shoot a gun, has kept everyone safe.
Andy was killed during the apocalypse, except Andy can't die as she's a Reaper. Her role is and always has been to send the souls of the dead on their way to their afterlife.
Coming upon a small settlement, Andy is intrigued by it's leader. Not often a man gets more than a cursory look but the feelings mutual as Mason is equally intrigued.
It's never been in the cards for Andy to settle down in one place or with one man but that doesn't mean she lives her life celibate. One night should be all it takes to scratch an itch before moving on.

This is a book that really would work as a weekly TV series. A different take on the 'Walking Dead' franchise, this pulls in multiple different paranormal beings though the next book in the series features a totally different cast of characters and scenario. I can just cross my fingers that the author might. in the future, reunite the entire series and characters.
At 103 pages, there really wasn't enough opportunity to include depth of any sort in the world building & characters. I did appreciate that the author chose a 'fade to black' option for the adult content scenes as otherwise it would have taken away from the central story line & plot which was already suffering because of that fact - superficial. I did enjoy that the main characters are both alpha and that Andy is a strong female type drifter character where usually it's the male.
The secondary characters supported the main characters and served as a foil for the world building but each and every one was what I call a 'disposable character' meaning I had no vested interest in whether they survived to the end of the story or not. Which is good because like 'Walking Dead' there are casualties.
This is a book that can and will be appreciated by fans of post apocalyptic dystopian world romance. The factor in making the decision to grab this book or not is (in my opinion) connected to any potential reader's feeling regarding purchase price, page count, and whether adult content scenes is a deal breaker.
It was awesome! ... And then it ended too soon. I feel like the climax was rushed, but still totally worth reading. (the awesome!) Also, hello, sequel?
Mina Carter is one of those authors you just keep coming back to. She never has failed to catch and keep my attention. When the world turns on its tits and the monsters we thought were only in the story book are alive and well? Your options are limited as a human or other than.
Join Mina as she spins this tail of a all about kick butt reaper and sassy to boot. That oh so bump heads with a more than just human male. Who’s the baddest in town ask her she’ll tell you. Not only do they threaten each other which may just have to go on the back burner next to their feelings that just happening to chemically ignite. They have more than each other to deal with. Danger is a foot and who you going to call, the Grim Reaper. ( smiles )
Quick easy read that will make you wish you had the other books in the series in your hot little hands. You love the post-apocolyptic world? The I need a hero or two? Smexy hot yummy hero and heroine. Grab Reaper and enjoy.
First I was caught by name and then by cover. (Mind you GR cover wasn't the one who caught my attention, but Amazon). The blurb sold it. I always loved h, who has special powers and is unique in the para world. Andy didn't disappointed. Though I have to say I love when h accepts and enjoys who she is. Andy did that but it took time and something to happen. Mason wasn't lacking either. They both were perfect match.
I saw this novella when it still brand-new and had a reduced price on the Samhain Publishing website. I read the description, got excited when I saw that it was a post-apocalyptic story starring a woman who'd been turned into a Reaper, read the excerpt, and decided I had to buy it. Unfortunately, although there were aspects of it that I liked, this novella didn't quite work for me.
The world is an interesting one, wide open for whatever sequels Ms. Carter might want to write. This is one of those "everything and the kitchen sink" worlds that includes every imaginable supernatural being, which I know really turns some readers off, but I thought Carter handled things fairly well. Several beings were mentioned in passing, but the only ones that made extended appearances were Andy (the Reaper), a small group of ghouls (they were only around for a few pages, though), and some werewolves.
I thought the werewolves and ghouls were so so (information about them was limited to "here's how they'll try to kill you, and here's how they can be killed"), but Andy's Reaper abilities were as interesting as I had hoped they would be. I also loved all the details about the ways Sanctuary's residents protected themselves. Those people were very prepared and very deadly.
Unfortunately, one big failing of this novella was that so much was left unexplained, and several world-details were a bit confusing. The Reaper stuff, for instance, didn't always make sense. Andy indicated that she couldn't reap souls until the beings with the souls were dead or about to die. I couldn't understand why this was even a minor problem, since, as far as I could tell, Andy could decide to try to kill someone, thereby making them about to die, and thereby making their souls reap-able.
I had assumed that Andy's kick-butt fighting abilities were simply paranormal instincts, something she gained along with her Reaper abilities. However, on page 62 (according to my Nook) Andy mentions "a healthy dose of martial arts training" - when did she get this training, and who gave it to her? What was her life like, prior to gaining her Reaper abilities? The more I thought about it, the more I realized I barely knew anything about Andy, or about Mason. I at least finished the story knowing a few small details about Mason's life prior to the bombs being dropped, but Andy's life might as well have begun when she became a Reaper.
Not only did I feel like I barely knew the main characters, character behavior was also sometimes inconsistent. Tough, disciplined Mason knew that Andy wasn't quite human and that there was therefore a chance she could be dangerous to both him and Sanctuary...and yet he had sex with her, and even fell asleep with her afterward, before finding out what she was. I thought that seemed very out of character and difficult to believe. Also, Andy and Mason's romance moved extremely fast - I think they knew each other a grand total of maybe two days before they decided they were in love. The "we're the same" factor was probably supposed to make this easier to swallow, but it didn't quite work for me.
My suspension of disbelief was still badly stretched by the time the novella's ending came around, and so I was less forgiving of the ending than I might otherwise have been. I'm not a huge fan of stories that end with pregnancy or babies, although I'll put up with those kinds of endings in most romance subgenres. Reaper's pregnancy ending didn't work for me at all. All I could think was, "Okay, so does Andy still have her instinctual need to reap souls, and how's she supposed to do that while 6 months pregnant?" And, after almost 80 pages of Andy being kick-butt, this line was almost painful to read:
"Six months pregnant, Andy was starting to waddle but she still insisted on pulling her weight." (p. 77)
She's gone from being the scariest, deadliest person around to almost waddling.
I really did like the setup, and all that action was nice after reading lots of more sedate works, but the limited number of pages didn't give Carter a lot of room to clarify things. Plus, writing-wise, a few more commas here and there probably would have helped, and there were way too many "Jul-" names. Thankfully, Julian (some guy who died early in the novella - see page 25), Julie/Julia (probably the same person, a resident of Sanctuary), and Julietta (an ex-girlfriend of Mason's) were all minor characters, or the problem would have been much worse.
I received a copy of this story for an honest review for Amber's Reading Room. Pictures used as part of this review are for fun and do not belong to me.
Reaper made me one very happy paranormal fan-girl. Author Mina Carter has created a solid dystopian/paranormal romance with a wicked sense of humor and a refreshingly simple couple. Human boy meets not-so-human girl, sparks ignite, and one may have to kill the other to survive if they both aren’t killed by other monsters first. See… simple.
Ten years ago the world literally went to hell. Vampires, Werewolves, Ghouls – every scary monster turned out to be real and the carnage they wrought was epic. With humanity decimated survivors are left with two options, either band together for safety or take their chances wandering alone.
Mason’s background as a soldier prepared him for the worst. Those skills coupled with his ability to detect non-humans have made him invaluable to the small community he has helped build. When a dark young woman enters looking for a place to stay for the night Mason’s loyalties are tested. He knows she’s not human but for the first time ever he’s compelled to get up close and personal with a monster.
Andy knows death. She’s killed herself several times but has the pesky habit of coming right back. It tends to happen when you’re a Grim Reaper. Resigned to her fate, Andy spends her days in solitude walking the roads looking for the souls she’s duty bound to collect. Drawn to a well-armed and well-warded community, Andy is thrown for a loop by the attraction she feels for a brawny military man who gladly wants to send her non-human self packing.
Can Mason and Andy give in to their attraction without betraying their responsibilities? Or will they need to turn to each other to face much scarier monsters?
For as dark as the plot sounds, Reaper was a really fun read for me. The writing was solid, the plot moved lightning fast and was a twist on the end of the world as we know it, both Mason and Andy got their own POV’s with clear/distinct voices, and the romance between the leads managed to be sweet and pack some zing. The best part for me was the balance of dark elements with humor. I have a weakness for any author that can work in some levity and Carter does that frequently with great dialogue and the lead characters inner monologues. One of my favorite lines:
“Oh, for God’s sake girl, get a grip. He’s a good-looking guy and you’re an intelligent woman. No need to start thinking with your damn ovaries.”
Do yourself a favor and read Reaper. Even if you’re not a paranormal fan, this is just an original read that is worth checking out. If author Mina Carter revisits Mason and Andy, I will definitely be back for more.
This is a sweet little read, it is short, only takes a few hours. I enjoyed it. I like both Andy and Mason. When I go into such a short piece- I have to manage my own expectations. I'm going to make a guess and say it's harder to write a shorter story and craft it well. You will not be getting any extreme character development (naturally, duh, it's short), and sometimes there are questions unanswered. Questions left hanging without answers happens in any book, sometimes they are more obvious and egregious and sometimes they are strategic and make sense due the finite world we live in. I would have given this four stars except
Every day tale of human boy meets not-so-human anymore girl in a dystopian future!
A decade after the world went to hell, Vampires, Werewolves, Ghouls, Brownies and all manner of other things that go bump in the night have become very real problems. Not only is Humankind scrabbling for survival, they also have to be very careful not to become someones dinner!
Sanctuary is little more than a crease in the map but somehow this little town has bandied together and are surviving more or less intact. With runes on the entryways, holy water in the coffee and a population with very itchy trigger fingers. Mason was a soldier before Armageddon and now he is "sheriff" amongst this little town. He still feels human but his body seems to find a way to heal from even the most heinous injuries, something he is keeping on the downlow!
Andy enters town and, due to her very otherworldly abilities, she can see through all the precautions the town has in place. She may not be human any more but she doesn't mean the town harm. She has a particular skill set now, she is a reaper and damn good at her job. But when the town realises that she isn't human they eject her.
But Mason is still an overgrown boy scout and goes after her, after she did help them vanquish the bad guys. But after an "adult entertainment" interlude they return to town and find the folks reeling from an underhand attack. Can Andy and Mason save the day? Or will the very things that make them "different" ensure that they end up alone?
OOOH this was fab! Andy is kickass but still very vulnerable, even if she would never admit it to herself. Mason is so sure he is human still...but is he. Andy and Mason together is very much sending a monster to catch a monster, especially when the monster doesn't know that is!! I can;t wait to read more about this cracking little town!
I got this book through Instafreebie. I first read this book back in '13 through Amazon but neglected to review it so I'm fixing that error right now. This story takes place in a post-apocalyptical world where humans are fighting for survival from paranormals of every kind. Enter Andy, a female Grim Reaper, one of a kind. She enters Sanctuary in search of souls to claim and stumbles upon the human Mason who has an unusual aura that Andy has never encountered before. Each is drawn to the other but don't want to acknowledge the consequences of such an attraction. Their meeting sets of a fire storm of action leading to dire significance for both Andy, Mason, and those humans who have survived in this world. This is one of Ms. Carter's early works and very much worth reading again and again.
Set in a post apocalyptic world, this story quickly reeled me in, I mean hoe often does a reaper like Andy turn up, especially in a town like Masons.
Mason has seen it all, vamps, weres, ghouls they have all walked into his town, into his bar looking for a quick meal, only to find themselves staring down several gun barrels. When Andy turns up, he is not sure about her, she doesn't threat, but he knows she isn't human and has to leave. When she turns up at a fight to the death, he knows this woman is more than she seems and is determined to find out why.
However when his town gets invaded and the vulnerable are stolen whilst he is away, the town he has protected suddenly turns, and it's left to Andy to pull out the big guns.
Fast paced, this story has the potential to turn into something bigger, so hopefully the author will give more.
"Reaper" is a very good story! Reading stories about ghouls is not really my thing, but Ms Carter has written a fascinating 'take' on what happens following a devastating war. I am intrigued, although the violence is a bit more graphic than I like. Andy has a new role since the war ended. She makes sure the dead reach the afterlife. A reaper - as in 'the grim reaper.' In her travels, she encounters a town with better than usual protections against the various non-human threats to their safety. There, she meets Mason, who protects the townspeople. He doesn't seem fully human, but what is he? This is a very good story, with many dangerous encounters, a bit of romance, an exploration of human frailties...a worthy read! I voluntarily reviewed an author's copy of this book.
Not sure how to classify this book but it was interesting. Normally not my favorite genre to read but this book was not bad. Kinda hate that the book was not longer for a more in depth look at Mason's past but overall the story kept me entertain for a lunch hour.
Andy was an interesting character and things will happen in the book that will make you question what you know of biology.
I have voluntarily read and review this book received from the author without obligation to do so.
I enjoyed this story! It was a fun read for me. I haven't been the biggest fan of post apocalyptic books but I really enjoyed this one. There was plenty of action in this story and it had a few twists. I enjoyed the pacing and flow of the story. The characters were good. The sex is glossed over for the most part. It's not very explicit and doesn't play a large role in the story at all. I enjoyed the humor and banter that happens in this story. It's a fairly short read and went by quickly for me. It was entertaining and I enjoyed it. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
I am not a fan of apocalyptic type books but this one grabbed me, dragged me in and would not let go. Mason was one hell of a hero and Andy, well she is something else entirely. Whilst I understood the panic when the children were taken, the townsfolk were idiots doing what they did to Mason. He is the only one who could/would have sorted things out and protected them. Loved it but I was not surprised at the lack of humanity from the humans. Sometimes the monsters aren’t always what you can see or believe. The ending with the Lycan fight and what happens is great.
Reaper by Mina Carter is Book 1 of the End of Days Series. This is the perfect book for those moments when you just don’t have enough time to commit to your regular full length read. Ms. Carter has a nifty lil knack of putting together the perfect to-go reads. While they are quickies, they are complete and filled with the right mix of characters, heat and world development.
Please note that an ARC was generously provided in exchange for an honest review of which this is both honest and completely voluntary.
I loved the way the story gripped me from the very first paragraph. I also love a kick ass woman who's not trying to out-man the men in the story. This powerful lady knows who and what she is and does not need to make others less to get the job done. A well built world with believable and likeable main characters and I wish it was a series instead of a standalone. I have every book this author has written and have never regretted a single one. A supernatural romance set in a future destroyed by science. Awesome on every level.
This was such an exciting book. I loved the darker and grittier feel of this world.
Ms. Carter builds world that I want to live in. I hope this is the beginning of a series because I loved this book. Reapers are fast becoming some of my favourite paranormal creature.
Who doesn't love a tough hero and a kick ass heroine?!
Wow! I know this is an older book by Mina but loved it. Andy is a post-apocalyptic Reaper and Mason was the town leader and a hottie. Still would like a hint as to what made him special. This ended well for a Mina book in that there was an epilogue with a bit of HEA!
Mina Carter has yet another hit with this post apocalyptic PNR. Andy is a reaper and wanders into Mason's all human settlement and things go pear shaped from there. With twists and turns Ms Carter spins a wonderful tale of action, adventure and romance.
Wicked post apocalyptic story. I was glued to the storyline, trying to figure out who was good, bad or indifferent. It spun a quick and fast paced tale. I appreciated that Ms. Carter took an honest approach to how people are when their backs are against the wall. Definitely ready for more of this world.
Interesting. This story is a little different take on how paranormals came to be. Andy is kicka** and Mason is a "whiskey" smooth talker. They are perfect together. Great read.
*I received an Advance Readers Copy of this book which I am voluntarily reviewing*
~ARC given by the author in exchange for a honest review.~
This is really good book. I enjoy reading it from start to finish. Even how the action was narrated was amazing. I can see it happening in my mind's eye. I look forward to reading more books from this series.
I couldn't put it down--so much fun to read. This story is an imaginative take of end of the world and a mashup of all paranormal creatures. I hope the author continues to write stories about this new world she created.
This post apocalyptic tale takes off from the very beginning. Lots of action with not only a tough alpha male but an even tougher female lead. They have to fight to reach their HEA.
I usually think this author writes stories that are too short. This one was Just right. Definitely recommending this story are a must read. I hope she writes more from this world!!!
I really loved this book. A powerful female charecter with a handsome strong soul mate. This apocalyptic world and the characters in it are fantastic. I wish it was a series.
