I randomly picked this book up at a bookstore when I last went as I was intrigued by not only the cover but also the blurb. Who isn't intrigued by animal companions where you have an epic bond and connection with them?

Anyway when I picked this up to read I didn't realise that this was the second in a series until I was already halfway through and updated my reading on Goodreads. This being said yes I am sorry that I missed the first book however I wasn't confused at all with the plot or the characters and found it really easy to follow.

I loved every single one of this crew. Bailey and Taleth have such an incredible bond even without having the time to work together to help their bond grow. There were quite a few plot twists and I know I do this everytime however Jackal was definitely the lesser of the two evils and I really liked his character. I'm such a loser for the villians ;). I'm on the good side I swear..

I'm so happy to have come across this book and I look forward to reading more of their close friendship in the next book.

I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, and I'm sorry to report that I didn't like. It supposed to be a middle grade novel, and they are often simplistic, but here a simplistic plot is combined with a not-thought-through world-building. Like, yeah, people love animals and bond with all kinds of animals.... and keep farm animals. Apparently, just because they love them, not for eating of course. Any 10 yo would surely believe that. So in essence, it's just a naive version of fighting for a throne, where a rightful (but oh, so evil) heir must loose to her very nice little brother, who makes others fight for him. There is very little world building, absolutely no character development. And the author has no sense whatsoever of the space-time continuum. The map makes no sense; the "kingdom" is apparently smaller than an average city, surrounded by wild (!) areas; the same distance is traveled in two days or five, depending on the mood; people going somewhere important for them arrive an hour late without any mention of what kept them, even though they started in like five-minutes walking distance. I don't even want to know how exactly they are going to live happily ever after in the next book.

Kurzbeschreibung

My favorite part was when everyone made it safely away from the thing that went on where the kin attacked the people, and they were mostly okay, excapt for some cuts. My least favorite part was when it eneded up being Jerri was the one who was working for Viviana. I suspected that Carin was the bird that stole the pack of Gwen when when she dropped it, and I was glad when Phi came and joined her. I was surpsied about Phi being there though. And, why didn't Hal or Bailey question Phi being with the others and not where she was said to have gone earlier? I don't know if I like this book better than the first, or equal. The only problem is, I don't have a copy of the third book, and neither does the library.

Well I had to read it because it was the 2nd in the series. Enjoyed the first one. I’ll read the third- if I can find it- but hope the third is better than the 2nd. I enjoyed it, but it didn’t compare to the first book.

A fun book for young readers. Although even my son pointed out the inconsistencies. Humans have a bond with animals yet they still eat chicken for dinner?

I thoroughly enjoyed the first in this middle school series and was eager for the second installment. Set in the prestigious Fairmount Academy (Do we ever really get tired of this trope? It is the easiest way to remove young people from a parental situation and provide plenty of other youngsters in a microcosm), Bailey Walker and his friends have returned from the winter break.

Of course, all is not well, and the academy awaits a visit from Viviana Melore, whose evil intentions Bailey and his friends are only too aware of. Who is the current spy that Viviana has implanted in the academy? What is up with the Seer's Glass? Bailey and Hal are on one quest; Gwen and Phi on another. A battle approaches that could decide the fate of the country and change the human/animal kinship forever.

Plenty of action in Flight of the King, but in order to have the appropriate background and familiarity with the characters, it is important to have read Legacy of the Claw (Animas 1). I have to admit that I didn't enjoy Flight as much as Legacy, but then it has been a year since I read the first book, so it was over 100 books ago...and, uh, I am a little more mature (OK, read ancient, if you must) than the target audience.

This series should appeal to young people, especially those who feel strong bonds with animals. It isn't Harry Potter, but it is entertaining and has embedded themes of friendship, animal kinship, loyalty, unbridled ambition, and courage.

Bailey is eager to get back to school, where Taleth, the last white tiger, awaits him. But Viviana is looking into the students now for the death of Joan Sucrette, and if anyone discovered Bailey's Animas was tiger, Viviana would kill him. Even without that, Viviana has her own plans for the country. Bailey is determined to stop them, but he'll need all the help he can get.

I adored the first book, but I couldn't help feeling a bit let down by this one. The worldbuilding doesn't expand much on what was presented in the first book, nor do the characters feel like they've really grown. Bailey does have some good moments, though, where he realizes his impulsiveness isn't always the most helpful response. Gwen tries to have an important role but comes off feeling as though she's just there (however, with some revelations that could make the next book very interesting).

I suppose it's also a question of stakes. I clearly see what the stakes were in the first book, and how that directly impacted Bailey and his friends. I'm not really sure what was accomplished in this one. The aftermath of the Progress Fair will of course be ongoing, but immediately, the implications are fuzzy. Did Bailey really win anything? Or just escape with his life?

Either way, I'll be hunting down the third book when it comes out, and hoping it wraps more up. This book doesn't stand alone as everything assumes you've read the first one, so read them in order. I rate this book Recommended.

Review: Extra

Flight of the King by C. R. Grey is another great book in a rapidly emerging new series. This book shows the perspectives of many different characters, a feature that I really like. It is also quite fast-paced and adventurous, definitely more so than the first book. I enjoyed this novel greatly, and I can't wait for the next book, Song of the Sword, to come out!

I received a copy of this for free through Goodreads First Reads

I was also lucky enough to receive a copy of the first book along with the one that I won. I absolutely loved these books. As a huge fan of J K Rowling and Rick Riordan, I was very surprised to find that I like Animas just as much as Harry Potter and Percy Jackson. This could be an absolutely fabulous series if the author keeps on the right track with it.

winterbreak #bookaday. Part 2 of the Animas series continues with the action from the big cliffhanger in part 1, but it doesn't stand alone, taking a while to reintroduce the characters. I was still disturbed by the Dominae mistreatment of their bonded animals, even though it is a main plot point around which the conflict revolves. Ending is left open for a potential part 3.

SO SUSPENSEFUL–the smaller surprises were hiding the bigger ones! I figured out that Jerri was the spy, but Gwen is a seer! WHAT??
