That Man Next Door

Rate this book
From a New York Times Bestseller comes a sexy romantic comedy featuring a virgin who's had five (failed) one-night stands and all the hilarious hijinks that ensue when One-Night Stand #5 moves in next door...

I'm a twenty-two year-old virgin who's had five one-night stands. How's that possible? Easy. I've never gone all the way. I just chicken out and bail. Thank God, I've always selected men I'll never run across again...

...until that sexy-as-sin Matt from last weekend moves in next door...

...then shows up as a new in-house counsel at Sweet Darlings Inc. where I work.

Oh...crap.

But it was dark in the hotel room. If I put on a boring office outfit and Clark Kent glasses, he won't recognize me...

5 Stars!

Nadia Lee is brand new to me y'all and oh my god she was soooo freaking brilliant, sexy, hilarious, and crazy fun that I'm sorry I'm just reading her words for the very first time (but no worries I'm checking the back list).

The very first stunning book in the sweet darlings series...

That Man Next Door completely stole my heart in the most unexpected ways. This book was brilliantly penned and addicting right from the very start. I laughed, I giggled, I swooned, and I laughed some more. From the beginning these characters hooked me...but only in the best ways.

Jan Doe has been trying to lose her virginity but after the fifth failed attempt, she's moving on, grateful it's behind her...that is until Matt, (un)lucky number five comes back walking back into her life unexpectedly. What started out simple becomes anything but.

Love sometimes sneaks up when we least expect it. Beautiful. Sweet. Swoony. Romantic. Unforgettable. All of the feels. This book will have your heart racing and the smile permanently etched on your face.

I can promise now that I've popped my Nadia Lee book cherry...there's no looking back 😆

I highly recommend this book.

Title: That Man Next Door ( Sweet Darlings Inc. #1)
Author: Nadia Lee
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publication Date: October 24, 2017

ARC

That Man Next Door is a book you have to read atleast once in your lifetime.. Yup. I said that. It's chick lit galore! It has a 22 year old virgin with a tendency to have wild imagination/over-think things ( Something we have all done hahaha) and a sexy-as-in Man. Need I say more?!

This book has it all!
Is it fun and witty? Yes it is!
Girlfriend aka BFF Goals?! Yes! Yes! Yes!
A super Hot Man? Yes!

Nadia Lee has created a character thats relatable. Jan Doe, just like us is insecure of herself, she's her own worst enemy. She also tends not to notice the beauty and individualistic appeal that she has.

I loved this book and it taught me a great lesson!
If you are not what society deems you as perfect, Be different! If you want to wear a sunflower pendant, wear one with pride! hahaha

Happy Reading guys!

What a sexy, sweet, romantic and often funny book. That Man Next Door is the first book that I’ve read from Nadia Lee. As with any new Author it’s always exciting to find someone to add to your list of BTR. A fun read and OMG I can’t wait to read Nadia’s next!!

Jan Doe, truly her name in the book, is a twenty-two-year-old virgin. Afraid of commitments as a result of her own messed up life she has decided that all she has no desire for a relationship. Hence achieving her goal of “losing her V card” to a series of one-night stands, out of town and with a guy she’ll never see again. Yet, in her quest she has yet to do the deed because she never follows completes the task.

So, now after five failed attempts imagine her surprise when #5 moves in next door? Not only does he fall into her life there but she is even further subjected to him being around him as the new counsel at her office. It’s his close ties, college buddies, with her boss and cousin David which makes it an even tougher situation. But #5 also has a name now, Matt Aston!

It’s funny the lengths Jan goes through to disguise herself, hopefully throwing Matt off course of their one-night stand…. in New York. What becomes obvious pretty quickly is that Matt would like to continue this liaison. Even though there is smoldering chemistry between them Jan is quick to put Matt off, the thing that Jan didn’t count on was his persistence and not rushing her into a relationship.

I loved how their relationship blossomed and how red hot they were together. But wouldn’t you know just as they seemed to be getting somewhere Matt’s ex would appear trying to come between them? Not just that but Jan had family issues to work through too.

I totally recommend That Man Next Door! A well written, heartwarming book that leaves you with plenty of warm feels!!

What a Great RomCom! It’s funny (zany might be a better word), it’s flirty fun and sexy romantically as well!

Jan Doe is quite a character. She is unique (dares to be different) but sadly she’s sexually frustrated. You see, Jan is 22 years old, has had 5 one night stands and she is still a Virgin. How is that possible you ask? She uses her Bailey App and gets the heck out of dodge (can anyone say panic attacks-lol)! Jan usually picks guys while she’s out of town so there is no chance of running into them again, thus avoiding any embarrassing situations. This plan works well too; that is til #5 or Matt. Not only does he show up in her hometown, he moves in next door and Heaven Help her he’s the new lawyer for the company she works for.

Let the crazy begin! While Jan tries to hide from him, Matt can’t forget the night that almost happened and isn’t about to let her slip away again. Does the sexy ThaYuMNDo (read the book for that one-LOL) catch her or does she slip by once again?

Jan’s life is a series of OMG moments that will have you laughing with a big smile on your face. I loved the storyline, the characters and the fun flirty feel of the book! 2 Thumbs Up and I highly recommend 1-clicking, you won’t be sorry you did!

I loved this sweet and sexy romantic comedy! I fell in love with the book and with Jan within the very first few pages. She was so down to earth and humble with a wicked sense of humor, really someone I would want to be friends with!

Jan is the normal twenty-two-year old, except she is still a virgin. She’s done everything thing she can to pick a man to lose her V card to, but she has had no success. She always bails. She is careful. She wants no strings and only attempts it when she is out of town. She doesn’t want to face the man again. She has a hot encounter with sexy stranger, Matt. Yet again, she couldn’t go through with it. She’s not worried because she won’t to see him again, even if she can’t stop thinking of him. However, it seems fate has other plans for her. Imagine her surprise when she discovers sexy Matt is not only her new neighbor but the new attorney for her family’s business. Yeah, things are about to get really interesting for Jan!

Without giving too much of the plot away, the chemistry and pull between these two characters is RED HOT! Their relationship isn’t all about lust, but at times, it’s very sweet. They are a couple I couldn’t help but root for. Jan lives a somewhat colorless life. She has wonderful friends, and her family loves her, but she is unsure of herself and her place in her family’s life. Matt brings color to her life and helps her trust others and herself. He gets her to step out of her comfort zone. In other words, he helps her spread her wings and fly!

This is another favorite read of 2017! It was not only a great read because of well-developed characters but was also very well-written and done in a way that kept those pages turning for me. I loved the addition of the some of the secondary characters, especially Jan’s BFF’s, Sammi and Michelle. I hope they will get their own stories at some point.

This book could be used as torture. Just read it to the bad guys, and they’ll be screaming their secrets before the halfway mark.

The desk is L-shaped and contemporary, and her electronics include a laptop hooked up to a large external monitor and a black gaming keyboard, which one of the app dev team members convinced her to try. The keyboard is currently emitting pulsing waves of purple, pink, red and neon blue. She’s in a pale blue dress with hot pink flowers on her chest and hem. It’d look too tropical beachy on me, but she somehow pulls it off. She gives me that toothless smile, where she just curves her lips up without

The FMC describes every single move in tedious detail. She also dissects every single happening and dialogue - analyzing it, explaining it, questioning it… and it’s always a circle of stupid like this:

“What do I do? Is it too late to go shopping? Surely something’s open. Don’t people shop before nine routinely on Saturdays? If not, they should start. Like now. Michelle’s still asleep. I’m tempted to wake her up and borrow some clothes, except she’s taller than me, and her girls and hips are more bountiful than mine (she has the perfect hourglass body). I’d look like a fashion-challenged donkey in her clothes. Sammi might be able to help, but she’s really into black stuff, which would be, I don’t know, too funereal or something. Why am I fretting anyway? I can’t wear Sammi’s clothes either! She’s positively lanky compared to me, and showing up with my boobs crushed into a top a size or two too small won’t impress anyone.”

Yet, when something actually SHOULD be questioned and analyzed, she doesn’t… such as when the MMC’s sister’s friend says “since he needs to marry soon.” THE FMC doesn’t even question why the guy would need to get “married soon”… Doesn’t say a word.

Meanwhile, and entire page can be devoted to our pie charts vs graphs and how it reminds her of a dick or having a nervous breakdown about how many pancakes she should eat.

There’s NOTHING funny here. Nothing.

The FMC rolls around in self pity. The MMC is basically like a penis drawn on paper - no personality.

And the absurdity of all the Days Of Our Lives shit at the end…. 50 shades of eyeroll wouldn’t even cover that lame shit.

If this was the product of a new author, I’d have more constructive words, but THIS is the product of a seasoned author with dozens of books under her belt? How? Why?

Ok so... the idea of an insecure virgin who can’t realize how fast her life is changing is so annoying for me. That’s why the rating is so low. And because of the story too.
Jan is a virgin who is searching for a man to lose her V card with. The problem is that she always “bails” before anything even happens. Until she finds Matt, the guy she wants to sleep with, but not in the first night they see each other.
Matt is the kind of guy any girl would want. Lawyer, hot, stable, rich and caring. That’s why I can’t understand how he fell for Jan. Jan was awful... I really didn’t like her. At all! A woman should be more powerful. But Jan was like a little kitten who didn’t know anything about life. I felt like I was reading about a child, not a mature woman.
Anyway, the story had something original about it. The context, the friends and somehow the secrets. Those I liked. 😁

Meh. This is one of those books that came up as a freebie, and since I am a confessed book hoarder, I went to 1-click that ish, only to discover that I already had it on my TBR Mountain. It's one of the reasons I committed to a no-buy this year. With this in mind, I settled in to read, hoping for the best.

Yeah, I probably could have skipped it.

It has alot of the standard bits I enjoy in a romance (three besties that clearly will anchor this series, hot ONS that turns into more, workplace romance), but the real offputting part of the story, for me anyway, is the complete and utter lack of self-esteem that the heroine has. It's relentless and it doesn't gradually get better, but is miraculously taken care of by one conversation right near the end. There's barely any explanation as to why she feels this way, barely any time spent giving really allowing the reader to understand why she is the way she is. Her character arc was unsatisfying to me, and since the entire book is from her POV, I just struggled to get into it. The hero is ...he's there, serves his purpose but I don't know him any better than I did in the beginning either.

There are more books in this series, but I'm probably going to skip. Just not my cuppa.

I found this freebie on Amazon and I believe this was my first one by Nadia Lee. And it's definitely not going to be my last. Her writing is great, the ebook structured is smooth and comfortable to read and the humor is amazing. I loved this rom-com.

At first, Jan annoyed me a bit because of her insecurities and indecisions. I'm indecisive enough for myself... being in the Jan's head gave me whiplash. However, she turned out to be pretty great towards the end, gaining her confidence and the certainty that she deserved everything in her life and that she was always loved by everyone.
Matt was the perfect guy. In every way. I enjoyed his honesty in the end and loved the last chapter on his POV.

This was a funny, flirty, cute and great romantic comedy. It was a light read and I enjoyed reading it.
I'm anxious to read the other ones on the series, about Sammi and Michelle.

I cannot believe I actually finished this book. Probably did only because I was listening to it
I really could not stand Jan. There is insecure and then there is obnoxious. It was rather annoying. Plus she is soo dumb - really you think u are pregnant after 1 day late and had sex for the 1st time a week before with a condom?? I spent most of the time asking myself why am I even bothering with this

I can't even remember their names after less than 48 hours. She was really really sunk in low self esteem but doing absolutely nothing about it until Magic Penis (TM) arrived in her life and made her hear what everyone was telling her all along.
He was okay. Decent guy. Nothing too outstanding. Reacted normally to various relationship dramas.

When you finish a book and you cannot remember the characters names, you know it was not the book for you.
There were 3 friends and the whole plot was that one kept almost having sexual but then running off. That was it.
The guy moved in next door and she decided to have him ride her if her virginity. He has glasses, I think.

And that is the sum total of the book for me.

Fun, sexy, and totally addictive new adult romantic comedy mixed with a neighbours twist

That Man Next Door was a fun, sexy, and addictive new adult romantic comedy mixed with a neighbours twist that I just couldn't put down! I’m not always a fan of new adult style romances or romantic comedies but Nadia Lee completely captured my attention with this easy flowing and addictive read that I literally read it from start to finish in one sitting because I was that engrossed.

While the book is told mostly from Jan’s point of view, Jan and Matt have such a sizzling chemistry after a failed one night stand turns into something so much more when they become neighbours. Both Jan and Matt were really likeable characters who you just couldn’t help but root for as things quickly build up and their steamy chemistry heats up. Adding to the book were some great secondary characters who need their own books because there is just so much more there to tell.

That Man Next Door is very well written with a great flow and witty undertone. For me, this book was the perfect blend of romance and comedy, with just enough steamy scenes to get you hot under the collar, without there being too much emphasis on either element (I find romantic comedies hit and miss if there is too much emphasis on a comedic element). I have no doubt this book will leave you with a smile on your face with these two sweet and slightly quirky characters and is a perfect feel-good romance to escape in.

If you are looking for a fun and completely addictive light hearted romance with plenty of humour and heart, don’t hesitate to read this book. I loved it!

This book, oh my. It’s sweet, funny and dam sexy. I was sighing, laughing then fanning myself whilst reading this book. Nadia creates a heroine you can’t help but care for, you want to have her friends and you yearn for her family. It breaks your heart to hear about her scars and the inevitable heartache the story brings. Matt is swoon worthy!

The story is so easy to read and written in a way you just want more. This is my first taste of what Nadia Lee writes and I will be delving into her other books.

Spoilers towards the end of the review!
This book was great...until it wasn't. I started off loving everything about this story. It was funny, the supporting characters were great, and the heroine and hero had chemistry. As the story progressed, I quickly got fed up with the negative attitude of the heroine. She was always putting herself down. I didn't let it bother me at first because the people around her were always telling her how great she was and it was balancing out the constant negativity, but it got old eventually. She was always inside of her head. Here are a few quotes from the book:

This is when she is meeting the hero's parents for the first time at their house, and she is worried what his mom will think.
I take a plate and hesitate. Why couldn’t she have made just enough for us and then served a set portion? But no…How much am I supposed to take? Not taking any would be an insult, but I don’t want to waste food either. Is she going to think I’m a picky eater or…worse? God, I wish I had an app that can tell me so I don’t end up making an ass out of myself in front of Matt’s parents.

If this is a subtle dig that I didn’t go to Harvard like David, she missed the mark. I’ve already accepted that I’m never going to be as cool as my cousins.

People are constantly trying to get the heroine to see that she is too harsh on herself.
"You’re so busy worrying about what little flaws you have that you can’t appreciate the whole beauty of yourself.”

And this is how I felt the whole time.
Sweetie, you’re so self-critical, it’s painful for me to watch.
Replace the word "watch" with "read."

The heroine didn't change her way of thinking till the 90% mark and by that point I was done.

Would I recommend this book to people? Probably not, but don't let this stop you from checking it out for yourself. There were some funny moments in this book, and if the supporting characters get there own novels then I will definitely continue with the series because they were confident strong young women that I can get behind.

Just Blah. I just don't get what the fuss is all about. Are these ratings fake? The story is just so lame. The heroine is so insecure about herself, her virginity and Everything around her. Up untill the end she refuses to acknowledge this essential part of her anatomy- her Brain! I almost felt sorry for the guy. But even his character is poorly written. The romantic scenes are mediocre at best.

Verdict: consciously staying far away from books by this author.

Don't know how I missed reading this lovely book by Nadia Lee, but maybe it's a good thing after all because it helped stretch my string of winners to 11 in a row (there was a point over the Christmas break where I was batting 0 for 8, with a bunch of DNFs so upsetting I wanted to throw my Kindle against the wall!)

THAT MAN NEXT DOOR is definitely worth anyone's time to read. It's by Nadia Lee, so of course there will be plenty of...ahem...love scenes, in and out of the bedroom. But this book is so much more than an excuse for a bunch of sexy times.

Love is composed of little things. Like making your husband's favorite breakfast every Saturday, just because. Like him carrying your computer bag to the car and putting it in the trunk every day so you don't have to. Little things that denote a heart-deep devotion to making life better for the object of your love, even in small ways.

That kind of not-saccharine-but-oh-so-sweet caring is evident in every move Matt Aston (the hero) makes in THAT MAN NEXT DOOR. Yes, he's hot and sexy and has those washboard abs some women drool over, but it's his devotion to Jan Doe (the heroine) that raises this story above the norm. (Authors take note: MORE of this kind of hero, PLEASE!)

My heart bled for Jan. So insecure. So afraid of taking risks. So paranoid she'll fail spectacularly if she puts herself out there personally and professionally. Fortunately for Jan, there's Matt. And her best friends, Sammi and Michelle. And her cousin (and boss) David. And her grandmother, Alexandra. (The supporting cast of characters is so true-to-life, even the baddies, it's another reason this book is so appealing.)

I hate spoilers, so I won't insert any here. Needless to say everything works out in the end (this IS a romance, after all), but not before Nadia Lee demolishes your heartstrings with epic scenes of supposed betrayal and heartache.

THAT MAN NEXT DOOR is a definite winner, with a heroine you'll love rooting for and a hero who'll make you swoon. NOT because he's sexy as all get out (although he is) but because he makes your heart melt with his overall GOODNESS.

Hmmm...think I'll go back and re-read my favorite scenes.

Alright this was a book filled with a roller coaster of thoughts from me. At first it was super cringe and I actually almost put it down. But once Matt was introduced I was flipping the pages like nobodies business to see what happened next. I found Matt’s character to be what saved the book. He was incredibly charming and caring and his dialogue along with facial expressions really tugged at my emotions and had me rooting for him.
Jan was a whiney lil biatch. There I said it. I was so frustrating to have her freak out over every little thing. However I did like how the author tied everything up at the end including how she felt unwanted by the world since she felt her family didn’t love her but when she saw otherwise she realized she was worthy and she tried to fix her insecurities. I just found it so unnecessary to be cooped up for a whole ass week and not go to work because one man told you the truth and you didn’t like it.
Also she was way too paranoid about the pregnancy thing and it was SO ANNOYING to see her get nauseous over everything and feel bloated and sick and miss her period yet she had no clue she could be pregnant until the whole birth control scandal - like sis- we GET IT you’re pregnant like wake up!! Gosh.
I sort of liked the ending. I found it satisfying that they ended up together but it was so matter of fact like her grandma gives her soup and a pep talk and suddenly she’s showered and dressed and goes to tell Matt she was wrong and they’re suddenly perfectly fine again!?
Again this book was wild but I enjoyed the ride and it was super easy to get through it in a day. Glad I read it.

That Man Next Door was a sweet and funny book that I blew right through! There were some unexpected moments in this story that brought tears to my eyes. I find that the light-hearted novels tend to pack the most punch when you get down to the nitty gritty part of the story.

Matt and Jan were so freaking cute together! Jan is awkward and doesn't realize how beautiful and smart she truly is. All she wants to do is lose her virginity on a one night stand but always panics before she can get that far.

"He's all man and Matt and sweetness and all the things I didn't know I wanted."

Matt is sweet and charming, but also captivating and I adore the way he treated Jan.

That Man Next Door was an unexpected read that I will recommend to anyone looking for a fast paced story that packs a punch of feels. I can't wait to read the rest of the stories from Darlings Inc. The side characters were just as amazing as Jan and Matt.

Grab That Man Next Door today! *wink*

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first book by Nadia Lee so I wasn’t sure what to expect but this book turned out to be a great little read.

Jan has had 5 one night stand and is still a virgin, how? because she runs out on the guy before going through with it and thankfully never sees them again. That’s until Matt who is the latest guy she bails on, he moves in next door and then shows up as the new guy where she works!

The book is told in the first person from almost entirely Jan’s perspective. The last chapter is from Matt’s and its so swoon worthy!

The story really sucked me in, I started this last night and finished this afternoon because I enjoyed reading it so much. The pace of the relationship was a little faster than I would normally like, but there was no insta love, just lots and lots of lust and steaminess.

I found myself relating Jan quite a lot because she is very overly critical of herself and I’m largely the same way. I found her very enduring and easy to connect too. Matt was lovely, perfect guy next door material.

Tipped the scale to 3 stars.

2.7 stars. I found the female lead to be a tad bit immature, dramatic, over-analytical , made assumptions regarding her history that drove the arc of the story and it was mostly unfounded, which was incredibly annoying.

I think I’m spoiled with dual POVs because this book didn’t have one until the male lead’s POV in the last chapter. I think it would’ve helped greatly break up my annoyance with the female lead.

Debating if I will read the next one as her friends weren’t far behind on the annoyance factor.

Jan Doe has a series of failed one night stands in her quest to find "the one" to give her V-card to. She works with her family at Sweet Darlings and because of some of her history, she doesn't appreciate how wonderful she really is. Matt is failed one night stand number 5, but then they run into each other at work. He tries to convince her to give them a shot, but Jan isn't sure.

I liked how Jan took the time to discover who she is for real so that she can move forward with her life. She does get input from her friends and especially her Grandma, but she does her own work too.

This is my first book by this author and I loved it a lot. The plot caught my eye immediately. I love me some ‘never will see him/her again and then BAM’ 🤣.
I was worried at first that Jan, being in her really early twenties will not be a believable heroine... I mean, what do you really know about life and love at that age? Right??? But to my surprise, the author did a great job writing her journey and figuring things out.
On to the next one.....

Matt drives a hard bargain, “I mean it. Dinner. Tonight. You can have your panties back then. I’ll even have them laundered, dried and pressed.” Matt has a good eye, “those clouds over there…” He points. “They look like breasts. Yours in particular.” Matt likes to mke sure his girl is taken care of, “have breakfast with me. I basically only have bagels and cereal, but I can also whip up some eggs if you want.” I liked this book, I fell in love with Matt.

I liked it. I really did but I didn't love it. Can't place what didn't grab me and can't put this book in a 4 or 5 rating. Although it probably had to do with his parents and Emma. I will write a better review when I've had more time to digest it. I will say that I liked it enough to go to the second book. I have a feeling I can get behind Sammi.
