This is the first book I've read from this author and I ended up enjoying it a lot. I have to be honest though, it did take me a while to get into this story because it is definitely a different type of read from my typical books. I had to look past a lot of the stereotypes associated with these African American characters and just take it for what it is, a story. If stereotypes easily offend you then this book will definitely have you feeling some type of way. I enjoyed the characters a lot; Oni, Gia, Jamil, Shock and for a while I even enjoyed Iverson. This story definitely had some twists, turns and surprises that I didn't see coming. I absolutely loved the "sisterhood" between Oni and Gia and I enjoyed quite a few laughs with these two characters and their antics. Jamil was a great character even though he didn't have the best role models and I loved the way he treated and protected Gia at times. The ending was sweet and I enjoyed it a lot. I would definitely love to read Oni's story and I look forward to reading more books from this author. I just have to start each story with an open mind and not be all up in your feelings. If readers are looking for a good thug type read then I would recommend this book because in the end I did enjoy it.
I received an ARC from NetGalley to read and review.
Jamil and Gia come from opposite sides of the tracks, with Gia being a college grad and athlete, and Jamil being a drug dealer, The two meet by chance and Gia breaks down Jamil’s wall of distrust. The two quickly fall in love. Of course, this romance is threatened, mostly by Jamil’s past, but the two persevere. Street literature fans will probably like this book, as this novel has all of the elements of a street lit book, plus this book has a few twists and turns. Being that I like street lit and urban fiction, I have read this type of story line before and wasn’t surprised by some of the happenings in the book. In addition to the book being predictable, the romance between Gia and Jamil read like a teen love story instead of a romance shared by two grown adults. All in all, it was an ok read.
I enjoyed this story. When I picked this book up in my local library I was a bit hesitant to read it at first. The sypnosis didn't sound too exciting at first, but I took it anyway to give it a chance. I thought the author did a good job with the characters. I didn't actually pick up on who Isaac was until he his discussion with Iverson. Pieces begin to unfold and I thought at first it was jealousy because Milli never got in trouble in the streets and they were trying to bring him down some kind of way. I'm glad Shock was a true friend til the bitter end. Oni had some issues of her own by looking for love in all the wrong places. Gia was the girl who always saw reason and she was someone to have as a friend. I only wish there was a story to follow on how Oni and Shock turned out later. Good read.
I enjoyed this book so much! I like the way it was romantic and hood at the same time. The characters in the story were well developed and extremely interesting. Gia and Jamil's love affair was fast and furious! I loved them together, but Gia was annoying at times. I found myself asking "how old is she again?" Overall, the story was great, the love scenes were HOT, and the characters were entertaining and relatable. This is the first time I have read anything by this author but it will definitely not be my last. *I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review"
I love me some Milli and Gee. I love how much they loved each other. How they push each other to be better, and to do better. Milli showing his emotional side to her had me crying like a baby and even though she didn't know him she was still willing to help. True power couple. Girl you did the same thing with this book and I can't wait to your next release 💜
I knew this would be a good book because A'zayler never disappoints but this story was just so sweet. I've read a lot of urban fiction but I don't know if I've ever seen a thug be so emotionally vulnerable like Milli. Milli and Gia were so different from other people their age and they truly were a love at first sight type of thing. Watching their love grow and blossom was so good. This story kept me guessing and on the edge of my seat with the drama and the deceit.
Yes girl you’ve done it again!! This read was so refreshing and I loved I everything about the love in this book.. the only thing I wished to see more of the development love between the two I know it was there from the beginning but I wanted to see more into it like what happened next, how Is life as a married couple and the new baby more background with the friends and family etc. Azayler never disappoints make sure you catch up on this great read!!!
I absolutely can't stop weeping, this book was phenomenal. Milli can only become better from here, Gee is so classy and the type of friend everyone needs. Oni finally got what she was looking for, would love her story. Great job
I truly did not expect this book to be so good, this is best book I've read so far. I know for a fact I'll be reading this again. It don't get no better than Milli Rock's love. I appreciate that the story wasn't flooded with drugs and appreciated a great story.
Milli had it so hard growing up, that it was hard to think that he was someone who deserved to be loved but Gia she pulled at his heart strings, their was was so intense that anyone looking at them could feel it.
This was an awesome read. Jamil and Gia's story was super cute. I like that she was able to bring out a side to him that he didn't know existed. She loved him through his storm and the way it worked out for them both was beautiful.
I really enjoyed this urban love story. Great story line. I couldn't put the book down. I enjoyed the characters and that special touch A'Zayler puts in her books.
First time reading this author but not my last. This book made me late for work because I could not put it down and overslept the next morning!!!! The writing had you drawn into the characters, and made you feel many different emotions. Usually the woman is the one that needs the strength from another, but in this book it was the man. It was nice to read a book that may be labeled urban fiction, but a strong black woman is the main character. Kudos to the author. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for this book in return for my honest review.
