The Cat's Pajamas

Rate this book
Everyone has somewhere they belong...

Cat Milsom ran from her life in the USA - from a career as a hospital doctor, and from an engagement just to please her family. When she stopped running, she found herself on the other side of the world in a little town called Cable Bay, New Zealand. Now she runs a bar, and tells herself that living up to people’s expectations is overrated.

Archaeologist Ryan Sanders has never settled anywhere. Travelling the world, he thinks that settling down is for little people who can’t see beyond their own front door. When he’s sent to investigate a report of fossils discovered in Cable Bay, he thinks it’ll be simple; done in a few days, and then on to the next job.

Problem is, the fossils are directly underneath Cat’s bar, and she’s not about to see it demolished without a fight.

Sometimes it takes digging up the past to open your eyes to the future.

‘The Cat’s Pajamas’ is an 80K romantic comedy with a little bit of steam, a cast of quirky characters, and a guaranteed HEA!

Soraya May

Soraya May writes contemporary romance with silly jokes, sweet (but strong) heroines, and likeable (but sometimes infuriating) heroes. She grew up on a remote New Zealand sheep farm with only books and animals for company, and she’s been using her imagination and making her own fun ever since.

Soraya has been a dance teacher, project manager, fashion model, voice actor, cancer scientist, technical writer, and short-order cook, not necessarily in that order. She believes that there is no such thing as ‘too many books’, or ‘enough dance shoes’, and the only thing in the world she really can’t stand is beetroot. Not even her cat likes beetroot, and that cat will eat most anything.

If you want to know when Soraya’s next book will come out, you can sign up to her mailing list here:

Warning: may also contain free stuff, giveaways, silly jokes, and minor grumbling about beetroot.

This is the first book I have read by Soraya May and I will definitely keep my eye out for more of her books in the future. It was an engaging small town contemporary romance set in New Zealand. Cat and Ryan were definitely not looking for a relationship. In fact Ryan was so focused on his career everyone else had to remind him that there was more to life than simply preserving the past, there was also the present. While Cat on the other hand had already realized that life was more than just a job but was still reeling from her own experiences. However, neither could fight their attraction but will it be enough for either of them to ever admit their feelings to the other? With a great cast of secondary characters, I can easily see more books taking place in Cable Bay and I look forward to them.

Received an Advanced Review copy for my voluntary review for Hidden Gems. This book was cute. And I enjoy small towns, since I have did not grow up in one, I am only familiar with the concept by reading of them. We meet Cat and Ryan and they were made for each other, they make me laugh and cry. It was adorable, and I think you will enjoy.

Cat's Pajamas Act 1
Soraya May

A little story with a sassy gal whose knows what she wants in life and to do. But destroying her new life because of a cute man and some bones isn't gonna cut it.

Cat Milson is not anyone's welcome mat. Tired of her pushy parents when she lived in Boston and a job she didn't really want as hospital doctor in the USA. She runs away from it all to a little sleepy town called Cable Bay,  in New Zealand on the other side of the world. Far away from everything in her old life. In the  months she has lived there she is the proud owner of a bar and has a mix of friends that help out when needed. Only what she needs now is some money for her bars upkeep and tearing up her bar for some old bones isn't going to cut it. Even if the Archaeologist Ryan Sanders is a cutie. What will she ever do?

A fun and exciting new book by Soraya May, "The Cat's Pajamas", is the first in a new series that captivates from the beginning.

"The Cat's Pajamas" is set in the scenic seaside location of Cable Bay in New Zealand, plentiful with colorful small town characters and original dwellings, including the Wunderbar. Cat Milson, like others, fell in love with Cable Bay, wanting a new place to belong. Cat, formerly from the USA, was on a mission to take control of her life, leaving behind her parents her fiance and career, for a chance to start over. She quickly set anchor, purchasing the Wunderbar, which became a central gathering for the town. Little did she know her life was about to change when contacting an archaeologist about some bones in her pub basement. From the moment Ryan Sanders enters the pub Cat knows there is electricity between them. Ryan might be here to examine the bones in the basement, but he was easily distracted when the local bar owner decided to heat things up and passionately kiss him on arrival. However, as Ryan's findings could mean the end of her new life, is Cat wiling to take a chance at love and to risk it all? And will Ryan want to give up the focus on preserving the past and focus on today and a possible future with Cat?

Soraya May's portrayal of many Cable Bay characters, in "The Cat's Pajamas" evokes a familiarity with the small town. Many interesting characters are depicted from the local green grocer, the mechanics, the ladies knitting circle, even a bicker with a strange dog, adding depth to the story.
Most significantly, the lead characters, Cat and Ryan, are depicted so well, that it is easy to invest in their stories. With their backgrounds, personalities, likes, and even flaws detailed, their fragility of wanting to belong and be loved, evokes emotions in readers from passion to sadness to happiness, and wanting a happy ever after. As the story continues to develop, and Cat and Ryan's stories start to become more inter-woven (helped by the two-way narrative), each assisting the other in overcoming their biggest fears that are holding them back from their future.

Soraya May captivates readers from the front cover, with a passionate and enticing couple embracing, the scenic backdrop of Cable Bay, a cute little cat, and a title that brings intrigue. Immediately followed by a plot that is fun, tantalizing and suspenseful, that compels readers to want to know more. Even the detail of a small cat emblem at the end of each chapter shows the thought and detail Soraya May has given to this book. Aside from the passion and fun elements, humor is also a key element in the story, and many times, readers will be laughing to the point of tears. One memorable scene will jump out with readers when Ryan comes to town (no spoilers). All elements combined, from the front page, to an exhilarating plot with an epic cast of characters,"The Cat's Pajamas" easily stands out as a must-read small town romance.

I thoroughly recommend all lovers of romance, who love humor and passion, to read "The Cat's Pajamas" by Soraya May. However, with some mature scenes, this is recommended an adult reader. At the end of the story, a sneak peak of the second installment is given, a romance for Beatrice the town mechanic. I can't wait to read the future installments of this series and see what love has install for the different characters of Cable Bay, and see who cupid hits!

I received this book in advance in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I thought this was going to be more on the humorous side rather than a typical romance but that turned out to be an okay thing. The romance was believable and unhurried. Lots of sexy times sure helped things along as well... There was also good pacing throughout the story. Many details from Cat's past were mentioned in conversation between them but we never saw the discussion where he learned all those things so that was a little confusing but not a deal-breaker for believability. The humor came out in their interactions and kept the couple from seeming too stagnant or sex-focused. Together they were a good match.

Ryan was a modern-day Indiana Jones, minus the life-threatening situations, and despite his misguided attempts at keeping things with Cat going by keeping secrets, he was a tender, passionate man. He had love, a complicated situation with his father, and incredible intellect. He was also just a dude who made a mistake.

Cat was complicated, hard on herself, and just trying to find where she belonged. She found a place in the Wunderbar at the end of her travels and stayed. Was it where her heart was home? Perhaps not, but she couldn't see if that was really the case because she couldn't help but hold her heart aloof and separate from the community. Something was missing. Until she found Ryan.

The way that they came together was cute and steamy. Their resolution seemed obvious to the reader and the side characters but Cat and Ryan remained frustratingly oblivious to how they could make amends. In the end I was happy with how things came together. The epilogue was a bit more day-in-the-life but it did intimate what we could see in the next book with Bea as well as how sweet Ryan and Cat are together. Overall, this was a really cute story that drew me in to their community and I'm looking forward to the next book.

This is the first book I have read by this particular author and it was very pleased with it. Cat ran away from her old life and ended up as a bar owner in Cable Bay. When her friend Farrah’s daughter, May, discovers a bone in the basement of the bar, Cat promises her that she will contact someone to see if it is anything important. Cat emails the archeology department at the closes university and receives a response from Ryan who is going to come and check out the basement for other artifacts. When Ryan arrives, he is not the older nerdy man that Cat expected. Cat is not what Ryan expected to find when he asks for the bar’s owner either. There is an immediate attraction between the two of them. What will happen to the bar if Ryan finds any important artifacts there? What will Cat do if the government ends up taking her bar away from her to make it an excavation site? Are the sparks flying between Cat and Ryan something worth investigating?

This book switches back and forth between the 2 main characters POVs which I enjoyed. This author did a great job of portraying both characters. Both Cat and Ryan are well developed characters that I felt like I knew well by the end of the book. There are a ton of secondary characters in this book that will make a wonderful series if the author continues with it- which I hope she does! I knew where the plot was headed from the beginning of the book but that didn’t make it any less enjoyable for me. Having never been to New Zealand, the descriptions of Cable Bay and the surrounding area were very important and I think they were done very well. I can see these places in my head and would love to visit! Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sweet and steamy contemporary romance.

This was another great read by Soraya May. The book was well written and very descriptive, I was clearly able to depict and visualise each scene. At times the story made me laugh and at times it was tense and emotional, twice I was nearly in tears and I was literally asking the heroine just to hear him out. It is written in dual POV and it also includes a lot of side characters which strengthens and adds to the scenes. Especially the older characters were a blast.

The story takes place In a fictional coastal town named Cable bay which is located in New Zealand. It's about a romance between a flighty doctor Katherine from America and an adventurous archaeologist Ryan from New Zealand. Their attraction was instant but their relationship was not without hurdles. Their story does prove that you don't know where you will find true love.

I'm enthusiastically looking forward to the second book, this time about Beatrice the local misunderstood mechanic. Can't wait!

Favourite scene/quote;
“I want you to not forget me, okay? That’s all I ask.” Looking down at the floor, he almost mumbled. “Please, just don’t forget me, that’s all.” Excerpt From: May, Soraya. “The Cat's Pajamas - ARC Version.”

It was such a memorable sweet scene. I would recommend this book for anyone looking for some humour, and light heart romance.

Cat and Ryan are making history in this hot and steamy HEA! Cat is finally living life on her terms. After years of doing what was expected of her and placating her family with her medical career and a fiancée she just meh about, she finally decided to hit the reset button and do what makes her happy. After traveling the world for a bit she settled in Cable Bay and impulsively buys the Wunderbar. After pouring her heart, soul, and savings into revamping the bar she is finally happy where she is doing something that she choose. Along with a lot of hard work and a stove that needs some TLC, Cat also appears to have also inherited some sort of archeological find in her basement. Ryan is driven by his need to preserve the past. It wouldn't take Freud to figure out the underlying reasons behind these urges- with his father's illustrious career in archeology and subsequent slow submission to Alzheimer's, his need to preserve memory is understandable. When he is sent to Cable Bay he expected to go in do his research and be on his way with no issues. He is used to this lifestyle after all, but from the moment he meets the beautiful Cat he is thrown for a loop. All of a sudden persevering the past doesn't seem nearly as important as what's happening in the present and even more important what could be in the future.

I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book.

Great book diving into finding a place where you feel at home. Cat was an excellent student and then doctor. She gave it up and traveled around the world trying to find the answer to her unhappiness. She landed in New Zealand and bought a bar there using most of her savings. Ryan was a archaeologist with a PHD. He was intense on preserving history. A find of bones under Cat’s bar has him headed to Cable Bay. When Cat and Ryan meet there is an instant chemistry between them. What will happen when Cat finds out Ryan is the man coming to access the bones in her basement? Will the bones really be a find? Will Cat and Ryan get together? Will they both find their happy ever after ? Grab a book and your favorite reading place and get started. You will be so glad you didi.
The book includes attraction, demons from the past, sexy scenes, disasters, deceit, love, remorse, heartbreak, decisions, family problems, and some funny scenes.
This is the first book of Soraya May I have read but it won’t be the last. Soraya is a new author whom I believe will become well know. Her writing style is complex and she blends everyday problems with funny situations to make you laugh. Her plot and her characters are pushed out to where you feel like you are in Cable Bay meeting all the natives there.

This is the first book in the Cable Bay series.
Cat Milson was a Dr. in Boston before breaking up with her fiance and buying a one way ticket to travel the world. Now a few months later she is the owner of the Wunder Bar in Cable Bay New Zealand and life is throwing a few obstacles her way. When her best friend Farrah's daughter finds an old bone in the basement of the bar nothing can prepare her for what happens next.
Archeologist Ryan Sanders has received a photo of an old bone found in New Zealand. He knows it could be an important discovery and that he needs to see the site in person. What he doesn't know is what will happen when he gets to Cable Bay.
I'm so glad the author wrote a longer book then she has before. It gave us a chance to get to know both Cat and Ryan along with some of the eclectic residents of Cable Bay. The story is about romance, small town friendships and love.
I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Dr. Cat Milton is going against her parents traditional lifestyle when she flees her hometown leaving a promising career and boyfriend to escape to a small town atmosphere in New Zealand. She buys an old bar (Wunderbar) on an impulse which requires an enormous amount of work. One visit from her bestie and her besties daughter, May fumbles upon an unusual bone in the basement. Archeologists Ryan Sanders enters the bar to survey the bone but is greeted with a weird kiss from Cat. The attraction between the two was strong enough to be noticeable, but there's a problem neither Cat or Ryan is seeking a relationship. The bar is Cat's life and Ryan findings is holding the keys to her future in the quaint small town. The story is filled with great characters and the storyline was nicely written. I'm looking forward to reading about Beatrice, the mechanic.

Oh my. The banter, the snark, the teasing, the sarcasm! I'm in my element. The chemistry between Ryan and Cat is incendiary - the sparks between them can probably be seen from outer space. That means they're passionate in everything they do; from flirting to fighting to f... well, you know. Cat's landed at the Wunderbar after finally deciding to be responsible for her own choices rather than allow her family to continue to make them for her. Ryan arrives there looking to preserve vital pieces of history but is forced into a position to learn that he won't have a history worth remembering if his days aren't filled with things he can't afford to forget. The townsfolk that populate Cable Bay are a unique collection of characters that left me asking myself "did I just read that right?" and snorting with laughter. I can't wait to read more about their lives and loves.

Normally I am all over a fiction book that has anything to do with archaeology. I love reading about someone making a great find, especially if it is mysterious. Sadly, this book didn't deliver. We barely found out anything about the find itself. The focus was almost entirely on the romance, which is fine, but there wasn't enough tension in it for me. I didn't feel like there was much of a hurdle to overcome, and I lost interest near the beginning. I kept hoping it would get more interesting, but it didn't.

Cat continually talks about how much her bar means to her, but I just didn't feel it. I didn't end up caring enough about the bar to care one way or the other, and I felt that Cat would almost be better off if it ended up being demolished.

I'm still baffled about how she could give up being a doctor, with all the time, money, and training involved. She obviously liked helping people, I'm sure she could have found another way to utilize her training.

Soraya May has another winner. This was a great romantic read. I fell in love with Cat and Ryan and felt like I was right there with them in New Zealand. This was an emotional book with lots of twists and turns. Loved that it was written in a dual POV so we were able to see what each was thinking. A well written book with strong and often quirky characters and a very entertaining plot. Cat's a former Doctor who ran away from her career and an arranged engagement. She's running a historic bar in Cable Bay when she meets Ryan, a world traveling archaeologist who's in town to study some rare fossils. Things get a little testy when it turns out the fossils are under her bar. No spoiler here, but this is a book that you'll love reading. I received an advance copy and voluntarily chose to review it.

I loved this book. This is Ryan's and Cat's story. He is an archeologist and she is a bar owner, having moved to New Zealand from the U.S. When someone finds bones, she sends pictures and asks for someone to investigate, not knowing that if the bones are significant, they would have to tear her bar down to investigate the site of the bones and dig up whatever else is there. Ryan is the archeologist sent to investigate. He does not tell Cat he thinks the bones are significant, until she finds his notes, and thinking her bar will be torn down -- well, the story goes on from there. The path of true love seems insurmountable, but eventually things work out. I would love to read more from this author. I voluntarily reviewed this book from an advance review copy, and this is my honest opinion.

I loved it! Sure makes you want to find out what happens! I can picture the bar and how old it is and I'm particular the bar. She keeps polishing it! I can see the archeologist Ryan with his dry sense of humor and his jacket that draws women to him! Cat has a complicated past but, still seems to keep a good sense of humor even, when she's kissing unknown patrons of her bar.
Her best friend, Farrah is a card and you can just see her getting her best friend in a pickle! Of course, May is the sweet young lady that is always skipping around and asking so, many questions. I can just see her with her hair braided or perhaps, long curly pig tails with them bouncing as she skips I'm Reader for the next act!

I found it really good.

After Cat left the U. S. A. to travel around the world and find a place for herself while deciding what to do, she buys a bar in a small town named Cable Bay in New Zealand.
Her friend Farrah's little girl May finds some bones in the basement and Cat writes to the Archaelogical Department, where a Dr. Ryan Sanders answers her letter saying that he would go the following week.
When he arrives, and heads over to Cat's bar, she thinks he's a client and he thinks she's just a bartender. She kisses him and the story of bones, beautiful historical buildings, friendship and all else is about to go up in flames as did her oven.
It's a great story, funny at times with a HEA. Very recommended, so please enjoy it.

I like this story line and the way the words flow of the pages. It is very well written and that in a way that makes this story believable and the characters real. I like the couple Cat and Ryan. They are so suitable and cute together. Their chemistry is amazing and they just fit.
It is a romance but it has moments where you laugh, sigh and go through the whole emotional rollercoaster with the main characters. They supporting characters gives the story the needed edge to keep you reading from first to last chapter. A bit slow with to much filling sometimes, but a good read.
It is a story that has humor, is sweet and very enjoyable. I can only recommend it.

Some books just grab you and won't let go, because that is the last thing you want them to do. This is a story so engaging, from the detailed descriptions of place and characters to the easy flowing read that speaks almost conversationally. You will find yourself caring about the characters, from the quirky to the compelling. You will laugh, nearly every few minutes as I did. You will cry, and I rarely do that, but admit to it here. The romance has its heat when it happens, but you will be so drawn into the story that rushing to it isn't necessary. It satisfies in every way you hope. Soraya is a consummate writer, and this book is a "do not miss."

Cat has left her demanding career, family and fiancé behind and found a new home operating the Wunder Bar in New Zealand. She was enjoying her new life until a bone is found which brings trouble in the form of archeologist Ryan into her world.

Ryan is focused on his career and he wants to ensure that the past is not forgotten. The only problem is if he is successful in his quest with the bones it will mean the destruction of Cat’s bar and dreams.

I loved the banter between not only Cat and Ryan but all the people in town as well. I have read every book by this author and this is my favorite. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

I liked the latest book from Soraya May, set in a small town in New Zealand. Cat and Ryan meet when he comes to her bar to investigate some bones found under her bar. When the sparks fly Cat will try to ignore them and Ryan will try to downplay the meaning and with the added stress of what will happen to the bar if the bones are deemed an important find and you have the recipe for a wild ride of a story. There were times I was frustrated with them both because they forget that communication is an important aspect of any kind of relationship, but they figure it out in the end. Enjoyable read with some humor mixed in. Got caught up in the story and didn’t stop till finished. This is the first book I have read by this author and would be interested in seeing what she does with the other characters in the book. Really came to like the main characters but the secondary characters were well placed and added a lot to the story. So much so that will be looking for the next book this author writes. I did receive an ARC of this book from Hidden Gems for an honest review. Would I recommend this book to others, yes I would. Matter of fact brought a copy after I read it so could read again later.

I LOVED this book! The great storyline, interesting characters, and occasional laugh-out-loud humor combine to make what is guaranteed to be a bestseller!!! I was literally LOL-ing as I read through it (especially the part about the opossums!), unable to even put it down! This was an outstanding book that gives readers both hope and purpose. It wasn't too raunchy/sexually-graphic, but also not too skimpy/too little on romance. It was the perfect combination of the two! My only question after finishing, is what were the archaeological finds and what was their significance? Definitely a must-read for romance-lovers that enjoy a good story, as well!!!

This one was a little on the longish side. I am not sure but for this read I slowed down and took my time reading every single line as if it would be the last. The host of characters were just fun. The location was enticing. Small-town Cable Bay, New Zealand was just delicious. Small town life has a pull on me and my senses. Cat & Ryan were both career focused and at different points in their lives, but that did not stop them from forming a chemistry. While they each were at different points in their lives and careers, they made a good fit with each other. This was a sweet read of romance, small-town, life, and love.

This was a very delightful, enjoyable and delicious read about people struggling to find out what they truly want in life as they try to leave their mark on it. It was also a story about finding out who people truly are beneath their exterior appearances. Of course, it was also a superb romantic story about life, love, and creating memories in the here and now, not just in the past. I look forward to future tales about the people in Cable Cove from Soraya May. This is a voluntary review of an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

Truly fabulous book. Can't recommend highly enough. The main characters Cat and Ryan are so right for each other and the frantic attraction between them is breath-taking. The love scenes between them are really hot. Apart from these two, there are a wealth of other loveable characters. Farrah, Cat's best friend with her cute daughter May, Bob the bartender, Jack the taxi driver, Daisy the guest house owner, Bea and Andy the mechanics and Harriet and Matilda the members of the Knitting Circle. All add to the charm and humour that runs throughout the whole story.

Fabulous read

I really, really, really enjoyed reading this book and not just because I live in New Zealand. I loved the back stories and the misunderstandings and how the characters grew together. Cat and Ryan were always going to make it - it was how that was interesting to read. Soraya has done a great job of transplanting an American from Boston into rural New Zealand and made the story totally believable. Not my first Soraya book and definitely won't be my last. I was very privileged to have an ARC and I have honestly and willingly reviewed this book.

I absolutely loved this book. Cat and Ryan had a few obstacles along the way. I can only imagine the amount of time and research went into putting this wonderful story together. Cable Bay sounds like an ideal place with wonderful people who support you no matter what. Cat found herself and what she was missing. A HEA.
I cannot wait for the Soraya's next book.
