Jasper Jelinek believes in ghosts. Probably more than he believes in himself. After living a life of relative solitude and misanthropy, he suddenly becomes saddled with some unexpected new friends. Their obsession with the paranormal forces them to face the thing they've been avoiding most: Life. Together they learn that there's more to being haunted than just ghost stories.
This novella was delightful, frightful, and heartwarming all at once. I loved reading about Jasper and his friendship with Wes as they try to solve the mystery of the Dead Oaks. The teens in this story were endearing and believable. Dez Schwartz excels at the fun combination of romance and the supernatural. This is a perfect read for Halloween or any time of year!
This could be the start of a beautiful, ghost-hunting friendship.
I have to be honest when I say I really enjoyed this read. It has sat on my TBR for far too long, and now that I've finally made time for it, it has a place in my reader's heart. Jasper, kind, soft boy that he is, reminds me so much of some of the places I've been in my own emotional life, so in many ways I felt connected to him.
Wes, and later Liv, are healthy and needed additions to help fill his world (which is also the overall setting's world) and bring more life and color to it. At the same time, Wes has a lot of his own depth, which I hope will be explore more, and Liv seems like she is going to be a VERY interesting character.
I'm looking forward to reading more about the adventures of the Dead Oaks Paranormal Society. I'm hoping to see more from Jasper, Wes, and Liv. It all has some serious potential, and from what I have seen so far, won't fail to disappoint.
