Her Last Breath

Rate this book
In the quietest town of America, the loudest sound is murder.

With clues from a murdered journalists voice recorder, Jack Winchester sets out to rescue a young woman who has disappeared in a small West Virginia town where five women have washed up dead.

But this is no ordinary town. Cell phones are banned, radios crackle out and someone patrols the streets in a white van to ensure everyone abides by the rules.

Filled with the trademark suspense, mystery, and emotion that have made Jack Winchester the world's #1 anti-hero, Her Last Breath is Jacks toughest case yet — and an exhilarating thrill ride from start to finish.

This is first class reading. If you like Jack Reacher, you will love Jack Winchester.

Great writing, start with book 1 and work your way through as there is a very definate chronology inasmuch as Jack grows and matures with each experience and in many ways becomes more likable. If you have read Lee Childs Reacher, this is very reacheresque but it is very original and Jack Winchester is a totally different animal. Fantastic reading, can't put them down and as soon as you have read one you will be buying the next. Totally addictive. Jon Mills, please don't stop writing this series!

" Some stains are permanent."
Jack Winchester has a past, one he has mostly left behind him. He travels around, not staying anywhere for long and, if asked what he does might say that he helps people. One such cry for help came from Jenna, a journalist from a small town in West Virginia. She had become obsessed over the apparent failure of the police or F.B.I. to interest themselves in the deaths of five women, locally known as the Greenback Five. All had been prostitute, died of drug overdoses and were found in water, and Jenna was convinced that all had been murdered. Reluctant at first to become involved, Jack makes the ten your drive into Virginia after a final distressed call for help indicated that Jenna was in physical danger and he feared he'd be too late to save her.

Powerfully written from the perspective of several of the protagonists, Jon Mills builds a complete and complex picture of the area, the people and just what is going on. The clues are there, too, if the reader want to follow them. The characters are well developed and three dimensional. They are sufficiently real to engage our emotions, Both good and bad. The writing is also fresh and visual, bringing a place alive with few words as in the description of a room where a chair was 'stacked with books and shoe polish'. Very enjoyable.

The narration by Adam Good is equally good, his pacing and intonation suitably matching the text. His individual voicing of each protagonist is also well done. A fine performance, although there is the very occasional editing glitch where a line is repeated. Overall, this is a totally immersive, enjoyable thriller, a fair amount of action but none of it out of place or overdone. Winchester himself is a complex character: always good to have a strong but flawed, main protagonist.
My thanks to the rights holder of Her Last Breath, who at my request freely gifted me with a complimentary copy, via Audiobook Boom. I really enjoyed it and will be looking out for more in the Debt Collector series. Recommended.

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily leaving this review and all opinions expressed herein are my own.

This is the ninth book in the Debt Collector series. I have not read any of the prior books and had no trouble following the story or the MC Jack Winchester. However, I would bet there's a lot of character development that I have missed in the eight prior books and I am certainly interested to learn how Jack became the loner vigilante.

Here, Jack receives a call from a journalist in a small town who believes that the deaths of 5 prostitutes are actually murders and she needs Jack's help. Jack is initially reluctant to get involved but decides to make the trip out to meet with the journalist. But, before he gets there, the journalist calls him in a garbled call which sounds like she's in trouble and when he arrives in town, the journalist is missing.

This was a good story with a lot of the small town elements that you might come to expect in this kind of action story. I liked the fact that the journalist was pursuing justice for the deaths of the prostitutes, who are often society's forgotten victims. This story strongly reminded me of the Jack Reacher series -and if you like Reacher, you will like this series. This is a well written story with some good twists, right up until the end. I recommend it.

I listened to this book -- the narrator, Adam Gold, did a great job. He has a wonderful baritone voice, which to me, embodied what I thought Jack Winchester would sound like.

I listened to the audiobook version of this book.

Loved this thrilling listen and I followed along perfectly well as far as the plot for this book. The author brings us an intriguing story that is a nonstop listen and keeps us captivated throughout. This was the first book I've read in the series and while I think it was great as a standalone, I felt like I was missing some things for Jack. There were times where I didnt fully understand why he was doing some things he did and how he came to be in the vigilante that he is; things I suspect were revealed earlier on in the series. Regardless, this was well written and I'd be interested in more by this author.

Excellent narration. The narrator's deeper voice was perfect for this style of thriller and he captured Jack's nature as a character, perfectly.

Action, action, and more action!

I absolutely loved this book from the very beginning to the very end. Jack is a very enjoyable character. Full of angst, courage, and strength, he jumps into every situation guns blazing and comes out on top. The way that this book began was very unique and actually had me laugh quite a few times.

The author has a very unique style and excellent way of introducing every character into the story. I felt as if I was reading about real people, and the narration made an intense story even more so.

Any and all fans of action, thriller, psychological, and suspense novels will adore this book.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Very Good

I have followed this series from book #1. Although I feel there were initially too many characters introduced in this story, which caused a little confusion for me, it was still very good and I enjoyed the book immensely.

Jack Winchester tried to get his life back on track once he was released from prison (book #1) but this was not to be. Despite his vow to help those in need, it's not without personal cost and sacrifice. Now, here we are in book #9; Jack without a loving relationship, no dog and still wandering from place to place.

Jon Mills has done an excellent job with a very well developed, but sad, character.

Hit and miss!

The storyline was good. I do have concerns about the author not remembering or following through on his writing. Maybe Mills thoughts while writing pour out so fast that he forgets some particulars mentioned previously in the story that things don’t coincide, match up or just fail to make sense. Or, maybe, as i have mentioned in previous reviews of this series that a new editor or proofreader is not catching these issues. This makes for “what?” the story fails to make sense in several bits of dialogue or descriptions. Thats said, I still love the main character, Jack. A “B” movie at best if ever put to film.🤨😊

Her Last Breath

I think this book moved at a much slower pace than his other books. It took me longer to read it as I took more breaks. It just didn't seem to move very fast. Now whether that had to do with the book being written in a small town, I don't know. I have enjoyed most of the books in this series, but I thought this one was a bummer. Too much driving around. Too much taking to people who didn't want to say much. And bonehead adversaries. The action that did take place seemed watered down
Others may like this episode but for me it just put me to sleep.

Great series.

I have read books 1-9 and loved them all. Great character and thrilling story lines. Well written. Character doesn't get old or predictable. Stories move along quickly . Easy reading without being simplistic. Compare to John Sanford or James Patterson. Well developed hero, (anti-hero?) supporting characters and story lines. Great reads. Couldn't put them down.

The Jack Winchester of old

This was a page turner reminiscent of the earlier books that got me hooked on the debt collector series. The last few were too unrealistic with poor editing and were redundent. They were set in Central and South America and although the premise wasn't bad, how many times can you say a country's culture and prison system isn't like in the U.S.?

Should be 5

Stars that is... By far, my favorite book in the series. This one was just too good to put down. Jack finds himself in another mess (of course) and there is no way he is getting out this time. So many twists and turns, you won’t know who the guilty party is until almost the last page. BUT DON’T PEAK! Read this book!

This was about a LOT of women that were killed, some raped, some not, some left in the lake and some buried. And all the killers were nuts! Jack was called in by a journalist, but she disappeared before he got to her. This was a great story.

No romance and the F-bomb was used 34 times.

As to the narration: Adam Gold is wonderful!

Winchester does it again.

OK just when I think that the Debt Collector could not get any closer to a super hero, he goes and escapes jail, saves the damsel, and solves the case. Jon Mills' character has been entertaining all 9 books. Will there be a 10. If so I am so there!

Like the main character

I like this series mostly to learn how Jack will evolve, but the storylines are creative. There is always at least one turn that is a surprise, like the fate of a character or a plot connection. These things are what keep me reading the series for fun.

Decent Read

Jack character was a hard to believe. I fid like the character Officer Larson. The book was a bit predictable but it did make it seem like they were a lot more guilty. I do plan on reading another book by this author.
