AUTHOR Q&A

How would you describe this series?

The books are fast-paced paranormal/urban fantasy thrillers with both action and romance. When I began writing this series, I set out to create something for readers who enjoy a thought-provoking book. Heartblaze books are told from the point of view of multiple characters and take place in the present-day as well as the past. These books are not for people looking for light and fluffy reading, nor for readers completely unfamiliar with the genre.

Is this series appropriate for all ages?

No. The series is written for adults, young adults, and mature teens.

What types of creatures are in the novel?

Quite a number: vampires, werewolves, werebears, ghosts, witches, and fae. All of them are portrayed in new ways. For example, the werewolves are shifters who channel animal spirits from the distant past. The fae have their own unique language that plays a role in some of the books. It’s a functional language that I spent a year developing!

Shay Roberts

Shay Roberts, a USA Today bestselling fantasy author, has a reputation for writing page-turning novels with captivating characters.

Shay began writing as a child, scribbling stories on the walls of the family home. In ink. As you can imagine, they were poorly received. But when the young author moved to pencil and paper, a career was born.

The medieval world is a frequent setting for the writer’s works. Passionate about Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA), Shay founded the Academy of Arms, a nonprofit medieval martial arts school in Los Angeles. As an instructor, the author developed expertise in various dueling weapons, including the longsword and pollaxe, and later discovered these skills are counterproductive in office situations.

Shay is also an instrument-rated pilot with a diverse educational background, including an MA in Screenwriting, a BS in Biology, and a BA in English. This is another way of saying Shay never wanted to leave college and join the “real world.”

When not slaving over a new novel, the author plays open-world RPGs and explores the latest tech gadgets. Shay enjoys a healthy lifestyle that includes cooking, working out, fermenting vegetables, and brewing kombucha. The writer’s cherry-ginger kombucha has been particularly well-received.

The author finds Pomskies and Russian Blues to be the most adorable of all creatures and will duel anyone who says otherwise. As an animal lover, there is always a place in Shay’s books for another furry friend.

Currently, the author spends much of the year in Portugal, embracing the culture and learning the language. É muito difícil! With its rich history, picturesque landscapes, and friendly people, Portugal is the perfect place for writing spellbinding novels. Be advised, if you ever want to visit this lovely country, you are required to love futebol and swear allegiance to Ronaldo.

This wonderful debut novel by Mr. Roberts is exceptional in its scope and ambition, its writing, its character development, and its plot. In fact, it's pretty damned difficult to find anything about it that isn't perfect.

Heartblaze does a brilliant job of combining vampires, werewolves and even historical figures with mordant humor, exhilarating action and a sensational gothic atmosphere. Whether you're twelve or twelve hundred, this is the book for you!

Trust me, you will LOVE this book!

ARC kindly provided in exchange for an honest review

4,5**** Dark & Mysterious stars

Well that was an unexpected wonderful story and i say unexpected because at the first pages i was a little confused about liking or not but then as the plot evolving i really enjoyed it and now i'm obsessed to learn was is going to happen next in the story.

That is a story full of suspense, intrigue, twists and secrets... you really don't know what is coming next, who is your enemy and who is your friend, who is telling the truth and who doesn't..(the whole thing just BLEW MY MIND )..
Although i can't say much not only because i don't wanna spoil but also for the reason that hasn't been published yet, i can say that i loved the characters Emma is surrounded by mystery but she has an interesting personality, the same about Stephan and Julian (ooh he has THE ATTITUDE but also a BIG SECRET).

Indeed here we have as the introduction says an emotional roller coaster, Emma and how she accepts her fleshly discovered facts also between her and Julian and even with Stephan that gave some intensity, another thing is the paranormal vibe (vampires, werewolves etc). I really have so many questions, as i said because it has a lot of suspense. The only thing that i didn't like was the switch from past to present and the opposite which is a thing that i understand because there are things (Cassandra) that has to be explained and talking directly about the past its the best thing but i'm not really a fun of that for the reason that is distracting me from the present.

Moreover the author did exquisite job as i felt the feelings that he was passing and i got into the characters especially in Emma. I definitely recommend everyone that loves paranormal/fantasy romance, it's really a very enjoyable story and i'm waiting to read the second book of the series.

I had heard good things about this book, and I really wanted to like it myself. The premise of reincarnation always seems to have such interesting potential, too. I just felt a little bit like this book was trying to do too much and jumping here and there and everywhere. In time, in place, from person to person or species to species.

At one point in the first third, I found myself wondering if I had accidentally started with the second book instead of the first. Things were eventually explained, but I felt a bit dropped into the middle of the story, and I guess I don't really like that all too much.

Emma seems to be one of those characters who has difficulty finding her way by herself, and would rather just throw her life into some male's hands. Of course, there are any number of male-types in this book who are happy to get involved. They all just seem to have issues of their own.

The voice was unique, at first. The main setting (Newport, RI) was great; I was married there and it's always been one of my favourite places. I didn't really connect with any of the characters, though, and the idea of searching for love based on a past life didn't really entertain me as much as I'd hoped. I did have fun, though, trying to figure out which character from Emma's was whom in her past life before it was revealed in the text. It was a bit like a game.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC to read and review.

Author Shay Roberts avoids all the pitfalls in this paranormal romance that includes familiar elements spun in original and inventive new ways. From the story's setting--Providence and Newport, Rhode Island--to the social hierarchy of vampire society, HEARTBLAZE blazes new trails. Roberts has a genuine talent for world-building and as we meet each new character, we're brought inside secret worlds and ancient organizations that feel organic to the story and not just thrown in there to flesh out pages.

there are two love stories at the center of the novel and they twine around each other the way a climbing rose twines around the columns of an old house. (There's a gorgeous Gothic mansion in the mix, and it figures in two levels of the story.)

The story is told in an almost cinematic style, "cross-cutting" between characters and among eras (in which real-life events are woven seamlessly into the fiction), and avoiding the sometimes tedious structure of many paranormal romances where pages and pages and pages of minutiae are laid in before the actual story gets started.

This is the first in a series. I want to read the next.

5 stars!

‘Heartblaze’ has the absolute happiest-ending/cliffhanger I’ve ever read, if happy-ending cliffhangers are possible. This emotionally engaging page-turner was devoured in less than 12 hours.

‘Heartblaze’ is narrated from four key points of view, connecting several characters in one clear central plot line. It is incredibly well-written and has a carefully planned plot and cast of characters.

There are soul mates, there is romance and adventure, there are vampires, were wolves, were bears, ghosts, and a powerful witch. This enchanting and expansive tale covers several different time periods and important historical events, as well as different landscapes such as a gothic mansion and a rural mining town.

An excellent choice for fans of fantasy, supernatural, or historical fiction.

When you love stories about werewolves, vampires and reincarnation, this is THE story for you! And if you don't, just give it a try. I loved this story! It was written from the view of 4 different main characters: Cassandra from the 18th century, Emma (Cassandra's reincarnation from the present), Stefan (a werewolf) and Cynthia (a ghost). Wonderful to read how Emma learns more and more about her soul's past and gets to know Cassandra's vampire husband.

I got a copy of this in exchange for my honest review. Thank you, Shay Roberts, for giving me a chance to read this! I can't wait to read part 2!

Great YA paranormal story with interesting and unique characters whose stories blend together to create a mural that pulls you in and leaves you wanting more. With past lives and paranormal creatures popping up to give Emma a bit more complications than her normal life entails, she embarks on a journey to find out who she really is, and who her true love was. Emma has high hopes and dashing disappointments, and she eventually finds what she was looking for, in a way!
The ending was surprising and anticipative, but a bit abrupt. I'm glad there's another in the series so I can continue with this story!

Mr. Roberts has written a story with a promising storyline, but I have to admit that it took me awhile to sort out the characters in this one. Stefan has gone undercover as Micah, Emma Sue is a reincarnation of a vampire named Cassandra, Julian is and isn't Julian.

The positives: well written and well edited, a nice mix of characters, good pace, and intriguing plot. I would have given it four stars if I hadn't had trouble keeping the characters straight. It's really as 3.5 star book, but I can't rate with half-stars. Now that I know the characters, I would like to see where the series goes.

A story revolving around the current and past lives of souls destined to know one another in flow of life and death. Emma, just turned 19, is a kind and gentle soul despite the horrors of the history of her current life. Once a promising Transcendent, assassinated before her time, she's grown in a cruel institutional system of orphanage and foster care; abandoned and abused because of her gifts.

Stefan, a soldier in past lives and the present, works for a zealot organisation, committed to the deincaranation of paranormal life. Tasked with surveillance and worse in Emma's life, he's been there for Emma before and finds himself repeating his past again; despite his orders from the Knights of Rome.

Julian is a contradiction of all Emma remembers from the visions of her past lives. Once joined forever by a ritual between Transcendents he, like her previous entity Cassandra, held a Heartblaze ring holding a piece of her soul. Destined to be in each other's lives in life and after death, when Emma awakens him he seems the complete opposite of what she remembers.

Cynthia, an abused child her grew to become the abuser, now stands as a ghost of her former self; being manipulated by a dark witch seeking a treasure gifted to Emma in her past life by Julian. Recovery of the treasure is promised to result in a new body for her to inhabit; but the insanity of her corporeal life has followed her into death. Placing this spirit, alongside the revived Julian, there's multiple risks to Emma's wellbeing, as there was in previous lives.

As Emma stumbles her way through her 19th year of life, all that she remembers leads to the opposite of what she pursues. Destined again in this life to be surrounded by others in her past lives, hints in the story reveals the significance of multiple characters. In a kind of The Notebook meets The Vampire Diaries, the stories are narrated by each respective life and the fated paths they were destined to leed repeat in new and similar ways. Often the results are the same despite the differing ways they were reached; Emma's past life visions of Cassandra reveal the action of the fates and tie together the lives of all in the story.

The scattered bits and pieces of trivia throughout, both natural and supernatural provide greater fulfilment. Whether complete truth or otherwise is insignificant, that they offer explanation for some things taken for granted is where the value lies. Through her past as a Transcendent Emma carries the ability of soulsight to her future lives. A gift that has in many ways led to a yearning in Emma to seek out that starcrossed missing piece of herself.

The soulsight ability and the nature of the storylines, with separate but ultimately linked lives rotating on the carousel of life, is as much about the eternal life of the souls within the storylines as it is the characters themselves. Through Emma's eyes and the little tidbits found within the subtext of the stories, the cycle of life plays out the karmic challenges some souls are destined to face in their past, present, and future lifetimes. Further, the destinies of some souls seem to forever revolve around the entities of others, regardless of the external trappings of the vessels souls embody.

A captivating and intriguing weave makes the chapters play out like snippets of a journal. The pages in this diary flip back and forth compounding the importance of decisions made in the past and now. Moving and entertaining, Vampire Soul is both a paranormal fantasy and intriguing mystery. The knowledge of what is and has happened emboldens the desire to read on; wanting to know if the past has no choice but to repeat itself, keeps the reader trapped within the stories of each life. With multiple components across a wide range of genres, this novel should be appealing to many readers, regardless of their predispositions to read one type of book over another.

This is a paranormal book containing vampires, werewolves, witches and a secret organisation that hunts these paranormal entities. The cover for this book are plain and to the point and pulls the eye of the reader.

There are multiple points of view for this novel – the main point of view is that of Emma Rue, a college student who attacks her college professor for reasons beyond her comprehension. She flees and, desperate for answers, turns to her psychiatrist who tries hypnotic regression. This backfires and opens her mind to a previous life as a vampire.

As she tries to understand the new life where she was a vampire, and what this has to do with her present life and ability, everything is turned upside down. She is captured by a vampire of her previous life, escapes, then she goes back to him after he threatens the closest thing she has to family.

Then there is Stefan, a werewolf who is posing as a fellow student to Emma. He develops feelings for Emma. The secret organisation whom Stefan works requests that Stefan capture Emma in order to kill her and stop that her soul reincarnates.

Julian St. Fleur is the 18th-century vampire who made Emma into a vampire. He is the key to Emma’s past life, flowing into her present life.

This book has intrigue, mystery, romance, suspense, and twists and turns. Most of the time you have no idea who is friend or foe, who is truthful and who is lying through their teeth.

Here we read about an underlying love triangle between Emma, Stefan, and Julian. This is one triangle that we do not see coming, and it’s clearly one where the general rules do not apply.

The writing and plot are intense and you keep wanting more. I finished this book in one day. It was one of those *just one more page* reads where I didn’t even realise the book was over until it was over. Was really upset about this. And immediately bought book 2, almost done with this one too.

Please know that if you love anything supernatural, paranormal, suspenseful and with kickass characters, plot, romance, and intrigue; then you must read this series! P.S. There is a cliff-hanger ending…

I found Heartblaze 1 to be one of the most interesting books that I have read in many years. Cassandra and Julian were married and she always felt bad about the man Tom that she had been married too before she met Julian she knew that she didn't want to hurt her father. But she was in love with Julian but she could't stay with a man she was not happy with and she and Julian lived a happy life until her head was cut one day they were out together and she has been gone from him for over two hundred years. Emma possesses the soul of a Vampire and she is driven to find out about Cassandra she has gotten suspended from school when she kicks her professor between the legs when he got to close. Emma meets Stefan Hilderbrand aka Micha who is in the KOR which is suppose to be her friend is really after her for the company he works for but he isn't aware he might not be able to put her in a box for the rest of her life. KOR are after all the paranormal's but the Transcendent's they are putting them in a box where they and their souls cannot escape, so cannot be reincarnated. Emma finds the mansion and the vampire she believes to be Julian but something is wrong Julian he is acting completely insane and she cannot figure what to do, then she decides she must release Angelo who happens to be able to control Julian if need be, She decides to release him because he is suppose to be in the sarcophagus in the back yard. Even though she still has some feelings for Stefan but she has to do everything first to save herself. Now this book has several other story lines going on but they all relate to Cassandra. This is book 1 in the series. I was given a copy for an honest review and I loved it.

The book is written from the point of view of 3 characters (or 4 as Emma begins remembering her past life as Cassandra). The three points of view gradually merge together as you read.

Emma, a college student who grew up in the foster care system; Stefan who is a werewolf working undercover in an organization that hunts and kills paranormals; and Cynthia, a ghost who is working for a witch. Poor Emma, Stefan and Cynthia are both supposed to kill her, and she starts out unaware of the supernatural world.

The book is gripping, with a number of plot twists, and very detailed. It builds a world and characters that I can visualize in my mind. It was hard to put down.

Spoiler: it ends in a cliff hanger, so now I need to read the second book in the series.

Slow and laborious start to this story. At first I wasn't sure if I would be able to finish - but honestly, as I continued the story did get better.

Emma - is a soul reader because she was a vampire in a previous life (not sure I got all of that straight). But basically, she can look into a person and see if they are a good, evil - etc. Pretty much during the whole book she was searching for answers - I did like how her previous life as Cassandra that she was independent and strong willed.

Be aware this does end in a cliffhanger - yes, there is a bit of twist at the end (I wasn't completely surprised because I had considered this option before it happened).

Putting the next book on my TBR - but still not completely sold on this story.

Absolute thrill ride from beginning to end, with lots of twists thrown in for good measure. If you enjoy a book mixed with reincarnation, shape shifters, and of course vampires, this is the read for you. Yes, as the author cautions you in the beginning, each chapter being the viewpoint of a different character does take a little getting used to, but oh man is it worth the time and effort. Started and could NOT put down until I finished it. Delightfully looking forward to #2 and the rest of this series. This is a voluntary review in exchange of a free copy of the book.

Shay Roberts gives us vampires, were wolves, were bears, and an organization that hunts the paranormal. But in all of this, we have a heroine, Emma Rue, young, naieve and in search of herself. As the story progresses, she starts to discover bits and pieces of her past; past life and past loves. She grows in strength and determination as she fights to save her own life as well as those she cares about. This is a wonderfully told tale from multiple view points that weave seamlessly together.

There were a lot of things that drew me to read this book. I was give this book as an ARC to read. The thoughts of vampires, werewolves, fae and pastlives all rolled in to one had me on the end of my seat as I followed Emma on her journey to the passed. There were times I was a little confused on what was actually going but that did not take way from the mystery and mystical journey that was going on in the pages off Heartblaze 1. It was worth the read.

I love Supernatural novels, and they have to contain a certain edge of your seat quality in order to keep my attention. You know those books where you start reading them and you get kinda bored so you start fidgeting and literally find ANYTHING else to do but read?? This is NOT one of those books!! lol This book is amazing actually. I loved it and I'm moving on to book 2 in the series. Emma has to be one of my favorite characters at the moment. I'll let you know how book 2 goes.

Poorly written and gaps of pages missing

Maybe it's just my copy but just about every other page was blank throughout the entire book. There was no way to understand the storyline. On the pages you could read the description was so poor you couldn't connect with the characters. I really hope I didn't pay for this book.
