How do you dream of freedom when you can't remember ever being free?
Lydia has never known freedom, but she knows she's been lucky. She has a good Master, a good home, and sisters who love her. Yet... something is missing. She longs to know more about the world around her, and the universe she can see from her window at night. But knowledge is for the men, and written in a language she'll never be allowed to learn. The penalty is too steep, the punishment too harsh.
When an opportunity to find out what she's been missing falls into her lap, she can't ignore it. She studies and learns in secret, hoping she's never found out. And one day, she does something careless that almost reveals her secret, and she pays with a penalty that is severe, and very public. What follows, though, launches her unexpectedly into a world she never imagined she'd ever get to see, and provides her a champion who teaches her to question everything she's ever taken for granted.
James has been invited to Midros to help his friend solve a decades-old mystery about a drug that's made on the planet. He stands to make more money than he can imagine, if he succeeds. Finding himself entertaining a beautiful woman for the week is not in his plans. But she quickly becomes so much more. She's incredibly smart, feisty, and brave. When he learns her secret, he finds he cannot bear the thought of letting her go back to face an uncertain future. And when they stumble on the truth about the deceptions her world has created, they must risk everything - their future, and her life - to right a wrong so great it will change the history of that universe she's always longed to explore.
This book has themes of dark desires, unequal power exchange, and adult themes. .
Sophie Kisker started composing dark stories of love and capture long ago, but it wasn't until she met others on the internet that she realized she wasn't alone. Her stories are sometimes dark and uncomfortable, but they will always have a happy ending.
During the day, Sophie is busy with job and family, but in the evening, her laptop comes out, her imagination gets going, and she morphs into a recluse who would be happy living in a cave, as long as it had wireless internet and an espresso machine.
I devoured this book in one day and now I'm a very sad reader because I have now read all of Sophie Kisker's available books. This author has a deft touch with a difficult subject - non consensual vs. consensual slavery.
James is from a society much like ours, but has been asked to spend time doing research on Midros where all women are owned and the constraints on their behavior is truly onerous. As James enjoys the BDSM lifestyle as a dominant, he is horrified by what he sees done to women.
The blurb does a better job than I can laying out the story, but it's the contrast between consensual and non-consensual slavery that really drives the story. I found Leina's master to be one of the most interesting characters, because he is a good man within the society on Midros but does horribly cruel things in the name of being a responsible master to his slaves. I liked both Leina and James and was pulled almost immediately into their story. Although horrible things happen to Leina, the author doesn't become overly graphic in describing them. I absolutely hate to admit I would have liked a bit more description in a few cases - particularly the public punishments - which the author does so well in her other books.
3.5 stars. I really enjoyed the premise of the story: a world which removed all women's rights and legally made them slaves to men, while other worlds look the other way bc they value the natural resources too much. If you're not correlating to places on earth and oil, you're missing the underlying intelligence in it all.
Lydia lives on a world where all women are property of their masters. It is forbidden for women, even, to learn to read in the language used for all written works. Lydia, however, came across a dictionary which she secreted away, and despite the penalty of death to be applied to women who read, she studies the book in order to learn the forbidden script.
By happenstance, Lydia is up for compulsory service as a temporary public slave - a week of her "skills" to be auctioned off. She is reluctantly acquired by an off-worlder who, while having enjoyed a Master / slave lifestyle before, declares that he is not OK with the non-consensuality imposed locally. As it turns out, he is in need of some help translating some texts leading Lydia to dive in wholeheartedly to peruse forbidden books.
Of course, severe complications ensue with severe ramifications.
I love the premise of this book! I was hoping for some serious peril followed by some serious redemption for the heroine. Unfortunately, I felt that the story fell a little flat. The world building was too thin to apply an appropriate degree of peril. In fact, I describe this book as an Mf BDSM fantasy with a noble, yet not quite satisfying, attempt to be wrapped up with a plot. As the fantasy seemed to lean towards a male dominant / female submissive structure, in the end, I felt that the story was nothing more than a Gorean tale spritzed with a dash of feminism.
I suppose that the erotica aspects were well written - Mf, spanking, and light bondage (mostly!). I prefer Ff, so, I'm not the best judge, and with such tastes, the plot did not do enough to rank the story with great reverence. There were simply too many holes in the society and too many very severe transgressions were too easily waved away (which cause very much grumbling - believe me).
So, in general, in my opinion, this story was a great idea with a so-so execution...
WOMAN OF MIDROS! YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE SLAVES! I AM NOT A SLAVE!
I found this to be an emotional, heart-wrenching, spine-tingling tale. On Midros, woman are slaves; they are taken from their families by the government at the age of five and placed in school, trained in obedience, then at eighteen sold to a master. Lydia is one of many slaves owned by her master. The government also demands that slaves serve one week a year, sold to a bidder, or bidders for use. James is on Midros to help a college friend with a mystery to a drug, hoping to unlock a secret. Seeing Lydia undergo public punishment for touching a book, and then finding her in the slave market for sale, brings these two together, and then the story begins.
The plot of this story will take the reader on an emotional roller-coaster ride, from the use and even abuse of women, not allowing them to learn, having no rights, and being subjected to a life of slavery. No other planet treats women this way, and basically they are brainwashed into subservience from a very young age. One man, a dominant, but with respect to women and only believes in consensual M/s relationships becomes a champion for his temporary for a week slave. How far will they go to make things right? What memories will haunt Lydia and help unlock the mystery to so many female slaves?
I adore Sophie Kisker's books! Memories of Surrender is the first book in the Midrosian Chronicles series and it is truly wonderful. I fell in love with the characters from the very beginning and was captivated by the entire book. In fact, I was so involved in the story that I read far into the night and only laid my Kindle down when I realized that I had to be up and out of the house really early that same morning!
Memories of Surrender is set on the planet Midros. At one time, Midros had been a dirt-poor, agriculture-based planet. But when paeolate was discovered, the mineral that transformed interstellar space travel, suddenly Midros was the wealthiest planet in the known universe. But with that wealth came unwelcome change. The social structure suddenly transformed. While women had never attained equality, now only men have the privileges of freedom, education, and wealth, while the women are forced into slavery. Not just any form of slavery either...sexual slavery with each master owning as many slaves as he can afford.
James is on Midros from off world as a favor to his father. He is researching Oblita, a drug that only works on Midros, although there are ancient Midrosian records that state it used to work off world as well. It could be a very valuable addition to his father's company's product line. His friend, Raym, a native of Midros, is attempting to help him in his research. James spends days and days combing through records of all kinds, accomplishing absolutely nothing and exhausting himself in the process. Raym suggests they go in search of a service companion, something each female slave is required to do for a week every year or two. They can be rented for one, two, three or up to seven nights. James is disgusted by the idea but accompanies Raym anyway. There he meets Lydia. He's enchanted. She's beautiful, beguiling, yet innocent and well-spoken. After an awkward conversation and impulsive decision, James rents Lydia for the entire seven days of her service companion obligation.
From this point, the story becomes an enthralling mix of complications, entanglements, confusion, and hair-raising adventures. James and Lydia become embroiled in events of epic proportions that will not only have a phenomenal effect on the two of them but on all of Midrosian society, the repercussions of which will be felt far across the galaxy. Memories of Surrender will keep you on the edge of your seat (or, as in my case, chained to your bed...pun DEFINITELY intended) for the duration of the story. It's just that fantastic!
Sophie Kisker is one of my favorite authors, and she has created a lyrical, entertaining, absorbing, erotic, and spellbinding tale. I honestly couldn't put this book down! Memories of Surrender is certainly one of the best erotic romance books I've read in a while and it's all due to Ms. Kisker's talent as a writer. Thank you, Sophie, for giving us an amazing book that shows just how impressive an author you are! I highly recommend all her books but this particular series is among her best.
One final note. To ensure that all readers are informed consumers, I want to say this is an ADULT book. It contains explicit language and some non-consensual sexual scenes. If you don't enjoy this genre, think hard before buying any book you know you won't enjoy. There are book synopses and reviews available on Goodreads and all booksellers' websites. USE THESE RESOURCES. DON'T LEAVE A NEGATIVE REVIEW WHEN YOU KNOW YOU WON'T ENJOY THE BOOK. IT'S NOT FAIR TO THE AUTHOR! She works extremely hard to provide a quality work product. If you know you'll object to the book's subject matter before you buy it, you're doing yourself and the author an extreme disservice.
I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
RATING: 4.5 / 5 ⭐ GENRE: Sci-Fi, Romance TYPE: #1 in The Surrender Series but can be read as a Standalone. CLIFFHANGER: No. MAIN CHARACTERS: Lydia and James POV: 2 POVs SPICE: 3 / 5 🔥 INCLUDES: Master/Slave (forced slavery), Corrupt society (gender inequality), A little bit of torture and almost death Will I re-read it? Yes, I might in the future.
This is not my first book from this author so I kind of knew what I was getting into. This type of book is kind of dark with forced slavery and strong gender inequality and can sometimes be hard to read because it causes a lot of frustration in the reader. But, here’s the thing. Even though it sometimes gets hard reading about forced slavery like in this book, the author manages to create a feeling of caring and caretaking. There is genuine goodness in the characters and even though there might be a little darkness in them, it gets balanced by goodness and in the end, you are left with a feeling of happiness. I loved Lydia’s intellect and curiosity and I loved the caring part of James. The development of the characters and the storyline was wonderful. There were parts where I got a bit nervous but the author did a great job at solving these situations and the ending was what Lydia and James deserved. The one thing I would like to have a little bit more, was descriptions of characters. I had a bit of a hard time picturing the characters and would have liked to have them described a bit more.
You can definitely read this book as a standalone but I’m really excited to see where the author are taking us in the next book.
Secretly searching for information to enhance a local drug, a scientist is invited by a Midrosian to his home planet. Midros is the only planet where slavery is the way of live. Men are the Masters, women are slaves. Male children are raised in their fathers house, female children are taken from their mothers at age five, raised to be slaves, and sold at eighteen. Witnessing a public slave punishment session, the clandestine scientist wavers between outrage and fascination. Although no stranger to a M/s relationship himself, involontary slavery is not to his liking. Almost by accident he acquires the woman he saw punished through a rent-a-slave event. For one week she is his. At first not knowing how to handle his temporary slave, they soon grow very close and he finds out her secret. By Midrosian law an offence punishable by death for the slave, is a blessing for him. Together they unearth secrets that will not only make him rich, but will also shake the foundations of Midrosian society. With an incredible sense for detail, Ms Kisker leads us through the construct of a society that is based on greed and coercion. The narration of the atrocities forced on Midrosian slaves, and on the other hand submission given freely to a trusted Master, is one of Ms Kiskers trademarks. You will feel immersed in the feeling of helplessness, and liberated by the trust and love of two consenting people. And last but not at all least, the scenes that develope between James and Lydia are a submissives, and a Dominants delight !

Choices Lydia is a slave. James is an other-worldly pharmaceutical scientist. Being not from this planet, James is both shocked and captivated by observing Punishment Day. Remembering Lydia’s screams, he decides to “rent” her for the eight days she must endure as a sex slave. How can he balance both sides of his nature to provide a safe and caring place for Lydia?
A secret---James knows Lydia’s forbidden secret. She can read! She also enjoys erotically submissive sex! James is besieged by indecent and illicit emotions as he watches Lydia move. Will he find a way to entice her surging passions while also protecting her limits?
Darn, this is one pleasurably yearning, erotically stimulating, passionately sizzling, and intensely satisfying story. I have placed it into my “excellent” category, and I highly recommend you read and enjoy!
Enforced or given? Ms Kisker writes books about all aspects of the BDSM lifestyle and writes them really well. This one is about a planet where men rule and women are slaves. Enforced to be submissive to their Master, left little educated, except in the art of giving pleasure. When the two MCs find each other and spend time together, James realizes that Lydia is a very intellectual young woman and he is smitten forever. This part of the story is wonderfully sweet and endearing amidst the horror of the repercussions and punishments of her official Master and the law. I read the book in one day and am definitely looking forward to part two. Highly recommended!
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Enjoyable read with some kink and hot sex to make this romance interesting. Sophie weaves this complex story without making it difficult to read I was prepared for the male dominated society that gives way to slavery of women, even free women. My one wish is that it would have been longer. I liked the HEA ending and even though the ending is not a cliff hanger, you just know there is more to come. I am looking forward to the next book.
Enjoyed this read. As a woman, I felt frustrated by the happenings in the book. There is much to be said about submission given freely and just taken on demand. Loved the two main characters. Loved the story as it unfolded and found myself wishing for justice and cheering for Lydia. Can recommend this book.
3.5 stars. Well written and edited book. Very thoughtfully done. I really enjoyed the main male and female characters. I struggled with the world as a whole though I see the analogy to current earth countries. The story was good. Just not quite to my taste.
Memories of Surrender by Sophie Kisker is great! What if the planet on which you live is the only one that allows all women to be enslaved with no rights? Lydia thinks she has a decent life as a slave as her master is good to her, but she’s caught holding a book and has to be turned over for public caning as punishment. James is a human researching a drug that only seems to work on Lydia’s planet but would be extremely helpful across the universe. He buys Lydia as a temporary slave and gives in to his attraction to her, ultimately finding the answers needed for the drug and getting his dom side flowing again. Eventually the two escape only to return to lead a revolt against the oppression! Lots of steam!

The women have no rights or privileges. They are owned and basically uneducated. It is specifically forbidden to speak or read in Br'ini, the ancient language of Midros. In fact, if a woman is caught even holding or opening a book written in Br'ini, she is...well, let's just say it's NOT a good thing. Lydia has not only learned to read Br'ini and do math but she is rebellious, not a good combination for a slave with no rights. When she's caught by her master handling a Br'ini book, she is sent to Punishment Day where, as her sentence for just holding the book, she is publicly whipped before a crowd of several hundred other slaves and various spectators.

Sophie Kisker is very much like the minstrels of old. She has the ability to weave a tale and make it lyrical, entertaining, absorbing, erotic, and spellbinding. Memories is certainly one of the best erotic romance books I've read in a while and it's all due to Ms. Kisker's talent as a writer. I highly recommend all her books but this particular series is among her best. There's one additional book in the series (Longings) already in publication with a third to be released in the not-too-distant future (Tears).
One final comment. This is an ADULT book. It contains adult themes, explicit language, and sexual scenes. If you do not enjoy erotic romance with explicit sexual scenes then PLEASE carefully consider your purchase before buying ANY BOOK IN A GENRE YOU KNOW YOU WILL NOT ENJOY. There is always a synopsis of the book at the seller's website or on the dust jacket of the book. There are also reviews of the book available not only on Goodreads but at the booksellers' websites. PLEASE avail yourself of these resources so you are certain the book you are purchasing is what you want to read. ALSO, PLEASE DON'T LEAVE A NEGATIVE REVIEW OF A BOOK YOU PURCHASED WHEN YOU KNOW YOU WON'T ENJOY IT AS IT'S NOT FAIR TO THE AUTHOR! She works extremely hard to provide a quality work product and if you know before you purchase a book that you will object to the subject matter contained therein, you are doing not only yourself, but the author, an extreme disservice. But if you do enjoy hot, erotic romances, I highly recommend Memories. I give it my highest rating without reservation!
I read this book in one day and got grumpy with anyone or anything interrupting my reading. I loved it. It is very dark in places so maybe not for the feint-hearted, but all the scenes are well thought through and integral to the story line. I loved naturally dominant James. He is caring, resourceful and sweet. Knowledge hurgry Lydia is sweet and a natural submissive. This is a full and interesting story with full and real characters. I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book and I recommend it. This story is a very interesting and entertaining read.
Well what a delicious dark alien romance, it had some great characters.
Lydia and James's lives collide together unexpectedly, and a romance fraught with many obstacles.
A planet called Miro's which is cruel, oppressive and dystopian especially with the female population. Full of secrets, lies, and betrayal a planet ruled by men.
I loved the story and the twist at the end I can't wait to read the 2nd book.
James has traveled to Miros for a special research project. The substance Oblita removes bad memories, but only on Miros. Miros is unique in that they have relegated women to the position of slave. Holding a book requires punishment, actually reading is treated even harsher. Punishment is publicly applied.
Life is complicated, the research is difficult. Another aspect of slavery is if you are not a “first slave” you must be auctioned off for two weeks every two years. When a set of circumstances has James “buying” a slave, more for protection, an alliance is created.
Research results in an astounding finding unrelated to the original cause. This has an interesting trigger warning, but the reader will be captivated and intrigued regardless. Very interesting chain of events!
This story is a rewrite of a book that originally came out in 2017, but it hits completely different now. I read this story in one sitting, late into the night, and had a deep emotional reaction to it. I love it when a book is so much more than I'm expecting.
The romance is dark and steamy, and the love between Lydia and James is deep and profound. They are beautiful together. The backstory is rich, the world building is great, and we have some amazing side characters. I was swept up in the pain Lydia lived with and her bravery and determination are inspiring. James is the perfect hero and does a fantastic job of stepping up to provide her with both what she wants and what she needs. And the ending, and glimpse of the next story, has me super excited.

Midros is a planet that has become extremely rich because of a mineral that is only found there. That particular mineral makes the lives of everyone in the galaxy easier. That very wealth lets Midros do just about anything it wants, which in this case is to enslave women as sex slaves. At the age of 5, girls are taken away to special schools, and at the age of 18, they are sold off to their new owners. The women aren't taught to read the language that men use and have no rights. Even off-worlder women must wear collars when visiting Midros and adhere to certain rules.
Along comes James, who is visiting Midros to help a friend come up with a solution to a medical problem. He is a Dom and has had a voluntary M/s relationship in the past. When he comes to Midros, he is both appalled and turned on by the idea of sex slaves. One day, his friend convinces him to go rent a companion slave. That's when he meets Lydia.
Lydia is a slave who has always wanted more. She taught herself to read the forbidden language in secret. When she gets caught holding a book, she gets punished, severely. Then her week to become a companion slave happens, and she's worried because she still has the marks from her punishment. Luckily, James sees her and rents her.
Lydia and James end up having a lovely relationship, with James supporting Lydia. She actually gives him a lot of help. He does everything he can to fight for her. Can they manage to change the whole world or will the world burn down around them?
I love Sophie Kisker's work. She weaves such excellent worlds. You can feel her characters' emotions and get caught up in them. I cry when they cry and I love to cuss the bad guys.
This is an adult book with adult themes. There is BDSM, spankings, some violence. If none of these things do anything for you, don't buy this book. Otherwise, grab it, read it, and love it.
James is a guest on the planet of Midros, invited to help a college friend uncover a pharmaceutical issue. A consensual BDSM Master on his home planet, he is somewhat intrigued, but more sickened by Midros’ culture of forced servitude for women. When he sees a recently punished Lydia at an auction for temporary slave placement, he seizes the opportunity to take possession of her for a week. Lydia has never known freedom. Like all women on Midros, she was trained from an early age to serve men, then auctioned off to a master at the age of 18. James exposes Lydia to ideas she has no idea even existed as she is suddenly allowed to make her own decisions. Unfortunately those ideas make the idea of returning to her life of slavery even more difficult for Lydia.
This is a very dark story that features the true enslavement of women. The author did a really good job of creating a society where women truly have no hope. I thought the plot was very well developed, and the mysteries of Midros kept me interested to the very end. A few times the dialogue felt a little flat, particularly between James and his friend Raym. Overall though, I enjoyed the story, and look forward to reading more from the author.
"She means so much to me now, and the future looks bleak without her."
What can I say without giving the plot away? How about I start with this. Memories of Surrender is a beautiful, moving and complicated love story about two people from totally different worlds who find each other and deny all odds to be together.
Unlike many of Sophie's books, this one isn't really dark. Yes, Lydia is a slave and yes, James is her temporary master, but there is no darkness between them, only passion, submission, admiration and pleasure. I read and relished ever single page from the first heartbreaking moments until the joyous end. I love this complex, rich world-building Sophie has done, even as I detested the way things were allowed to exist on Miros. And you can't even hate all the Mirosians as some were good, or as good as possible. I especially liked James's BFF Raym and truly hope to see him in a future book. As for now, bring on book two!
I adored this story. Lydia has been a slave most of her life. She was stolen from the home she knew and taken to a new planet where she is given a drug to forget her former life. She is then trained as a slave. When she meets a man that is to rent her for the week, she accidentally finds a room full of books that tells her how women used to be equal. However, the men on this planet have made it illegal and punishable by death for her to read their language. Will Lydia be saved from a horrible death or made an example to the other female slaves? Will she be able to live a life a freedom with the man she loves in a true M/s relationship? Read this endearing story to find out. It is a wonderful story I couldn't put down.
The story is set on a future world where women were forbidden to have any access to knowledge. James is a scientist that is invited by his friend Midras to visit his planet and help with a development of a new drug. James is a Dom but he prefers his slaves to be willing participantes. In a twist James ends up "renting" the slave Lydia. He soon discovers her potential and intelligence. Together, Lydia and James started to uncover many secrets that will have dramatic consequences not only to their future but also the mankind. The author did a very good job describing the differences between willing and forced slavery. Well done!
I enjoy a book that gets my attention from right at the beginning all the way through until the end and this book definitely did that. It started with Lydia being caught with a book written in Br'ini which was forbidden for women to even touch on the planet of Midros. James was on Midros trying to find in their archives why Oblita, a drug, would work only on Midros. I don't want to say more then that a risk giving away any part of the rest of the story. There is so many twists and turns that the way the story ended surprised me. You won't be disappointed if you pick this book up to read.
