I have always loved a good mystery. From my early years watching Murder She Wrote to more recent shows like Monk, Psych, and my absolute favorite BBC show ever, Sherlock, I have studied what it takes to make an entertaining mystery. I am truly blessed to be able to write and share my own mysteries with you. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I loved writing them :)
This is the first book I've read in the series. The author did a very nice job of making the reader feel comfortable with the characters right away so that people like me wouldn't feel totally lost. I really like Rachael and her friend Pippa. It seems like Rachael always has to be the voice of reason for Pippa.
In this book, Pippa called her friend in a panic, someone had stolen a lot of apples from her orchard and Pippa relies on these apples for selling at the local farmer's market. They weren't just any apples, the were "the best, freshest, most organic apples in Belldale." So Rachael and Pippa were at it again, attempting to solve the mystery of the missing apples. It was pretty hilarious to picture them trying to trap the culprit at night!
Later on there was something a lot more important to solve than missing apples when a customer of Rachael's main rival Blake's ended up dead. Pippa did a disappearing act for awhile so it was Rachael flying solo for awhile doing her investigating. Pippa was angry that she had seen Rachael at Blake's bakery and that she was also thinking about going into business with him.
There were so many good twists and turns that I had no idea who did it until it was time to reveal. Even though Pippa sort of flaked out on Rachael, she came around as all good friends do. I know I want to read this series from the beginning because even though the author did a nice job of making this so that it could be read stand-alone, I'd like to see what other escapades they got into in those first 12 books.
I volunteered to read an ARC version of this. Thank you to Fairfield Publishing for providing that.
The kitchen was a little cramped as Rachael and Bronson rushed around, bumping into each other while preparing the baked goods. It was made worse by the fact that Bronson had been an hour late and there wasn’t enough product to sell, so everyone was trying to hurry. To make matters worse, her assistant manager squeezed into the room trying to hand her a phone, despite the fact her hands were covered in dough. Pippa, on the other end of the call, was ranting and raving about her apple trees being stripped bare!
Rachael goes to see her friend and Pippa insists they hide and catch the thief red-handed. Surprisingly, they do hear a noise above and startle the thief out of the apple tree. However, he gets away! Who is stealing Pippa’s apples? Why?
The thief came back in the middle of the night to steal more apples, but the two women chased after him in Pippa’s truck (with the lights out!). The thief drove to Blake’s Dough Planet, Rachael’s largest competitor! They came back early next day and Pippa accused Blake of letting his employee steal her apples. The description matched his dessert chef, Alex. And little apple pies were in the case – made from Pippa’s stolen apples!
Later, Blake called Rachael. She assumed he was trying to apologize again, so she didn’t answer. But he kept on calling over and over! She began to feel something was wrong. She went over to see him and he told her one of his customer’s died – after eating an apple pie from his bakery! This was definitely something that Rachael could help him solve . . . maybe?
This was a cute cozy mystery. Pippa’s over-the-top reaction to the apple theft will leave the reader laughing, especially when she tells Blake she wants the apples back. He told her they were already made into pies and she demanded he “unbake them”! Poor Rachael had her hands full keeping a crazed Pippa under control! This is definitely a book you should read and enjoy! (Just avoid the apple pie snack with your coffee!)
Just when you thought you figured it out....you reach a dead end. A great who done it! A must read in this terrific series.
Another hit in Stacy Alabaster's Bakery Detectives cozy mystery series! A frantic call from Pippa has Rachael running to Pippa's little farm. Seems someone is stealing her Organic Apples right out of the orchard! The laughs pile up as Pippa gets angrier and angrier until they find out who did it and why and that the stolen apples my have caused someone's death! This leads Rachael and Pippa on a quest to find out how the victim died and who wanted her dead! There are so many laughs, twists and turns and red-herrings you get so turned around, just when you think you figured it out, You are wrong! A great ending that keeps you guessing until the final chapter. A great addition to this series and so much fun to read, you can't wait for the next episode in the lives of Rachael and Pippa! I received an ARC but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
Another brilliant book from the pen of Stacey Alabaster full of mystery, twists and turns. Beautifully written and full of delightful characters, humour and passionate emotions. Rachel gets a frantic call from Pippa raving about lost apples and thieves. So she dashes to Pippa’s farm to find out exactly what has upset Pippa so much, only to become embroiled in a mystery involving stolen apples, a business rival and potential partner, secrets and murder. Rachel then has to balance finding the truth whilst juggling friendships, business and partnerships. Will Rachel still have Pippa as a friend and colleague as she investigates the mystery? Will there still be a potential business partnership up for grabs? Will Rachel have help in working the case and will she be able to solve the tricky mystery? All the answers are within the book, to find the truth as to why and how you will have to grab a copy and read it. You won’t be disappointed.
When Pippa's "best, freshest, most organic apples" are stolen, right off the trees on her farm, Pippa freaks out, especially as she is due to sell her produce at the local farmers' market the following weekend. She enlists the help of her best buddy, Rachel and they manage to follow the thief to the doors of their rival bakery, a bakery that Rachel had been thinking of merging with. These amazing apples are being turned into delicious mini pies and if that is not bad enough, a customer dies from having eaten one of them. Are Pippa's apples not really that "best, fresh and most organic"? Is Alex, the baker of these mini pies a murderer with an apron? Or is Blake, the owner of the rival bakery a killer who makes good coffee?
I enjoyed this latest cozy offering from Stacey Alabaster, fast paced and laugh out loud with Pippa's antics as well as a good excuse to exercise those brain cells to find out who the murderer is - I didn't manage to do so this time!
Once again Rachael is faced with another murder. Only this time, it didn't happen at her bakery or have anything to do with her food. Someone bought an individual apple pie from Blake's The Dough Planet, and died! When Rachael goes to Pippa for help, she finds that Pippa has her own agenda going on....someone is stealing her apples. The apples she sells at the Farmer's Market. Okay, Rach and Pippa set up a trap for the thief and find out it is someone that works for Blake! This puts Rachael and Pippa at odds with each other. Then Blake tries to help Rachael find out about Valerie's death, and things get more complicated! Do they ever solve this case? Read the book to find out.
The Bakery Detectives series is now a teenager! this is the 13th book in the series and maintains the standard set by the previous books. The plot is clever and there are lots of misunderstandings to confuse Rachael in her attempts to solve the mystery. I didn't manage to guess the culprit until right at the end. The characters in this series are great, I especially like scatter-brained Pippa and her accident-prone husband, they provide lots of very funny moments. If you love cosy mysteries, then you will love this book with all its twists and turns. I did receive a complimentary copy of this book from the publishers (thanks Fairfield) but I have chosen to voluntarily write this review.
Another home run by Stacey Alabaster. This book was such fun to read. Rachel and Pippa are best friends who tend to get into trouble together. And boy do they get into trouble. The characters and the story are well crafted and this is a book I will read again. Ordering the paperback edition and will re-read the story when it arrives. This is a great series. I received an ARC but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own. Highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a fun cast of people thrown into crazy situations, with a good mystery thrown in.
A fast paced fun mystery. Is there going to be a partnership? Rachael seems to be having a difficult time committing or trusting, even Pippa. Who doesn't trust their best friend? Someone is dead and there isn't a lot of suspects, so maybe it's the apples. Pippa's apples? But of course digging deeper, there are a lot more suspects. So much going on, so much fun.
While this book is short and sweet it is my favorite. I love the characters especially crazy Pippa. The theft of a few apples turns into a murder case that needs to be investigated so that things can return to normal for the Bakery Bunch. So much fun in this story.
This little mystery was really good, also the characters were so real in their personalities. The way they acted towards each other. You can tell its a small thriving community. This one will keep you on your toes to figure it out. Can Pippa & Rachel figure out who the murderer is, before he/ she strikes again? Read it to find out. Debra.
It starts out with stolen apples and somehow puts a divide in the friendship between Rachael and Pippa. Once again they do what they can to solve a murder and the mystery of the stolen apples. Another fun Bakery Detective Mystery.
This is a delightful book, with a good plot and lots of action. S opp me one killed a woman with an Apple pie. There is a lot of suspicion and drama with a few bits of comedy. I enjoyed this and am looking forward to seeing the next book in this series.
This book has an interesting story and a good mystery, but needs better proofreading. I noticed grammatical errors. If that doesn't bother you, then I would give it five stars.
I love these bakery detective cozies as they keep you guessing and are a nice easy read. This one is the latest so far and not as enjoyable as the other previous ones. This is the 13th I believe of the series. Hopefully the next will pick up a little bit. I give this three and a half stars.
I've enjoyed all the books in the Bakery Detectives Mystery series. If you haven't read them, try one. Although, in this book Marcello didn't have any castrophes and he usually does.
Another must read moderately-challenging, fast-paced cozy mystery from author Stacey Alabaster. Great entertainment for an afternoon curled up on the couch! Highly recommend.
Such an amazing book. Totally enjoyable. Apples go missing and the detectives have to solve this as well as a murder. Just love these series of books and the author is extremely talented.
I truly enjoy these mysteries! This one is intense and kept me on the edge of my seat, holding my breath in fear that Pippa was involved! I am looking forward to the next one!
Someone is stealing Pippa’s organic apples!!!! A woman dies after eating some apple pie made at a rival bakery. This is the bakery that Rachael has been contemplating going into a merger. Even though Pippa and Rachael get off to a rough start, they eventually work things out to be able to work together to solve the puzzling murder, stolen apple mystery. A quick fast paced cozy with humor and many twists and turns. This is book # 13 in the Bakery Detective Mystery series. It can be read as a stand alone. This was the first I read in the series. I will be reading more.
Stacey's done it again. You'd think that after writing this series for so long it'd get boring but that's not the case. It's just as original and funny as when she started. Rachael and Pippa get pulled into another murder investigation. This time their friend Blake (the owner of Dough Planet) is suspected in the death of one of his customers by poison apple pie. The apples were stolen from Pippa's orchard by Blake's baker Alex. Their investigation takes them from one suspect to another. But Stacey Alabaster ties everything up to a very funny conclusion. I received this ARC for an honest review.
