Set in San Francisco, California in 1875. Jade has returned find out the secrets behind her father's death. She meets a handsome rancher who has just inherited an huge estate. Thanks, to her susposed best friend Babs, she is hoodwinked into spending time with this rancher. Things progress from there. Liken the ending. Interesting story and ending.

Jade was an all-around classic 80's-90's romance with all the things I love, and don't love, about those novels. The sex was, the first time around, not-quite-consensual, and the Mexican and Chinese supporting characters played to stereotypes. The author's research into Chinese culture correlated with what I was reading in academic literature at the time and impressed me. The quotes from Chinese literature throughout piqued my interest in the culture even more. The heroine and hero characters were complex and well-developed, and the details putting the reader into the historical setting were lush and enjoyable. I felt ready to book a trip to San Fransisco immediately.

This was official the first real romance novel I ever read, so I remembered the title very clearly.
