WARNING: THIS IS NOT BOOK 4 OF THE LEGEND OF ZERO SERIES. The Misadventures of Flea, Agent of Chaos is a mind-bendingly complex stand-alone novella featuring the Baga character of Flea from ZERO 2. It contains lots of hints as to what's to come in ZERO 4, so it is best read after Book 2, but before Book 4.
Author's Note: This is NOT a run-of-the-mill ZERO story. First, it has over 45 illustrations by the fantastically talented graphic artist Lance MacCarty. Second, it was written AND illustrated in 14 days. (14 sleepless, zombie-shuffling, caffeine-powered days). Flea, Agent of Chaos is best read by people who are already smitten with the ZERO series, as Lance and I wrote and illustrated it for fans of The Legend of ZERO who wanted to donate money to help with the repurchase of the rights to Outer Bounds, but for whom we wanted to create something fun and entertaining in return for their amazing support. Thanks again, and please enjoy. :)
After a long, twisted road, Alaskan Fury is my 15th book. The rest (aside from the first five or so ‘practice books’) spent the last 3-6 years languishing on my hard drive as I waited for some really cool editor at a big, traditional publishing house to notice me. It didn’t happen, even with a world-famous agent doing his damnedest to get my books out there.
So, because I’ve got a stubborn streak a mile wide—and some say because I’m a naïve, dumbass Alaskan—I’m striking out on my own and putting my books out there. Basically casting my dice to the Fates, and seeing what happens. If you like my books, please tell your friends. I don’t have a huge advertising team behind me, so word-of-mouth really helps.
On that note, my books never went through a copyeditor. What you see is the result of a few dedicated volunteers, all of whom have poured untold hours into the crafting of the book in your hands. They are awesome, steeped in awesome, sprinkled with awesome. Thanks, guys!
Further, I write fast. I can easily write 6 novels a year—8 if I don’t get distracted—and during those long years waiting for somebody to notice me, I was finding myself in the extremely frustrating position of watching my manuscripts pile up because traditional publishing companies can only take 1 or 2 novels by a single author a year. Keep an eye out for a bunch of new books from yours truly, as I've finally got an outlet for all that creative drive. :) Enjoy!
To be completely honest I disliked two chapters in this book. (The one with the AD&D scheme, too long, and the one with the lab's ghosts) All the other chapters were awesome, as incredibly good as usual. It's the best scifi universe i have read for a very, very long time. The characters are great, the plot is incredibly rich, incredibly smart, and the humour is omnipresent. Can't wait to read the next one !
I can't stress enough how much I am loving the Zero Universe. Great character depth with plenty of twists and turns. Sara King is what writers of fun Sci-Fi should strive to be!
I love character driven books! From sci fi to fantasy, for me the story is all about the characters and getting to know them, not necessarily if the or when the good guys win. Sarah King does this with expertise. Of course plot and setting are important but I love to know the characters as if they were my friends or enemies. I picked up Legend of Zero through Amazon unlimited and haven't looked back. In fact even though I got to read the series for free I went back and bought the books so I could always keep them in my library for re reading.
If you like Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy, The Wheel of Time, Dune, Star Wars, V, The Dark Tower...you should be able to love and appreciate Sarah King. Happy Reading!
Once again. This woman intrigues the living daylights out of her books. I started off with the alaskan series. Then on a whim because they sounded so far out of what I would normally read decided to read outer bounds then went looking for her other books. And Zero was the next set. I am now chomping at the bit I need to know I NEED the next book.... Please Miss Sara have mercy....
This was free from a favorite author of mine. I tried to read the first in the series, but the "kidnapping children to become soldiers and killing lots of them in training" starting point triggered me in ways that had me putting the book down. I've also read one other story from this series, and liked it a lot - it was choose your own adventure, and very funny. If you can get through the names for alien species and alien terms without full context, this story is funny in a mad-scientist-with-ADHD sort of way. Honestly, I think the ADHD-esque "where did THAT idea come from?" aspect of this author's writing is one of the best parts. And she's just a good writer, period.
So, if you like the intersection of sci-fi and fantasy, and great character-led stories, give this independent writer a chance.
This one is about Zero's bother Sam and his lady love, an assassin named Rat. They are on earth a couple months after it was sent back to the bronze age by intergallactic edict (The authorities dumped a bunch of souped-up dragons on the planet that are VERY hard to kill, and Earth will be under punishment for 600+ years.) And Ant was sent to kill Sam, but doesn't really want to. He's now her slave 6 out of 7 days each week, and she his one day a week. Something to do with a battle of wits, I think. Sam started out insanely smart, then experimented on himself with alien tech, and now is a hybrid creature who doesn't see that well, and worm-like hair, weird eyes, and is impotent for all women except his mate (Ant). He's literally humanity's best hope of survival, and he's very easily distracted. There's a whole lot of background politics going on that unravel at the end of this story, but in the meantime, it's mostly about survival, human mutants that were experimented on, dragons, and pesky shape-shifting aliens.
I was so engrossed by all the books from this author that I couldn't stop, I read 3 novels and 2 novellas by her in one month then 2 novels in another series from her the next month! I haven't read a science fiction author this fantastic, this exciting and non formula since the greats like Azimov and Clarke. You never know what to expect from her, just when you think you have the plot figured out, she throws in a curve that comes out of nowhere!
She doesn't go by the numbers, there isn't always a happy ending but you will be sacrificing your children and skipping meals to make sure you can buy the next novel in the series! Read this book, read the others, you can dko them in order or not, they're that different, that new, that enthralling, you won’t regret it!
This is not a spinoff... this book has a lot of what I feel is important information to know before reading the next book in the Legend of ZERO series. I loved it from start to finish and it has a lot better pacing than the last one. I feel taking this out from the next book and making it standalone was a good decision although something should be done to inform people that reading this is IMPORTANT for continuity. I don't want to spoil but there is a heap of information you can get from this book.
Now the waiting starts for the next book... while I'm waiting for that I started SPIN from Robert Charles Wilson and I'm enjoying it quite a bit.
Absolutely thrilling! I first found Sarah King with this series two weeks ago and she’s jumped to the top of my favorite authors list. Her books are compelling, tear jerking, and laugh out loud amazing. The characters worm their way into your hearts and I’ll be burned if Congie dialogue hasn’t tried to come out of my mouth in daily conversations. Find a chair, a mug of your favorite brew, and don’t bother making plans for the rest of your day - you’re not going to want to put these books down.
The book takes the series along all sorts of new turns, with the question of human extinction still open. There are new characters introduced and the power struggles are more complicated. The various forces determined to extinguish humanity are merging and the humans who can prevent extinction are beginning to merge also.
The book is fast and the characters, old and new are becoming more better known to the reader. They are also changing as they interact. The story is very interesting.
The final chapter of this book was worth the whole series. I wasn’t happy with book 3 and how it seemed the author was portraying humans as nothing but raping and pillaging savages. It was my hope that in book 4 there would be an explanation to this...and I believe there was. Either way, book 4 was a savage read and the end chapter had a chiller reveal that the author pulled off to great effect.
This novella has a lot going for it. Action, snarky dialogue, mutants, and violence enhance the plot. The end of the world is a minor threat hanging over Slade and Rat's heads. Somehow I don't think it will be a problem.
Sara King has actual writing talent. Fantastic character construction, amazing dialogue and funny as hell at times as well. This might be one of the best books I've ever read on Amazon.
Very enjoyable series with plenty of sarcasm, wit and excellent dialogue. I recommend the entire series so far and I am looking forward to the next book. Very happy to have stumbled upon Sara King. Recommend to young adults on up.
Loved this little "detour" from the main storyline because it spent some quality time with great characters who may not have otherwise been featured so prominently. Highly recommend.
I absolutely love these three, and this book is just like candy to a baby...Give me more please!!! Cannot wait for the next Zero book and to follow these three into the next chapters.
It's a well written story, that entertains from start to end, with characters you care about, and grow to love. Of of the best scifi's I have read in years
Just keeps getting better.... More twists and turns then a roller coaster. Epic story. The first book needs a good editor, but every other book is amazing!
Four and a half stars. Sara King does it again! The story line in this short novel is not as tight as her other works, but her characters are as great as always. Possibly even better then in her other works. I like the crazy mixed-up universe of aliens all interacting as if meeting friends on a street corner. It has a natural quality that I haven't found in any other author.
This really helps to wet my appetite for Zero 4. Keep up the great work Sara!
