Sometimes the biggest risk we take is with our hearts.
1821 London
At twenty-four, Lady Helen Kinsey has her future carefully mapped out. A life of gentle quietude in the country caring for her unmarried brothers and walking with her dog. It does not include marriage, a dream she banished after her first Season. But when a handsome earl enters Kinsey House in London on a mission to find out why their footman was poisoned, she finds herself drawn into solving the mystery. And despite resistance on her part worthy of an army maneuver, she is irresistibly drawn to the earl himself.
After Whitehall receives a letter warning of a plot against the Crown, Jason, Captain Lord Peyton, is sent to investigate. Surely the famous explorer, Lord Lawrence Kinsey could not be behind it. He is engrossed in roaming ancient libraries and tombs in the East and bringing back their treasures for the museum. But after Peyton finds a fragment of a burned letter it appears that something dangerous lurks in Kinsey House, and Peyton becomes determined to keep the defenseless family safe, and one member particularly. Lady Helen has built a wall around herself and holds him at arm’s length. But arm’s length is not where Peyton wants to be.
As the mystery unfolds it becomes imperative for Peyton and Lady Helen to work together, very closely indeed.

Maggi Andersen’s latest release, Unmasking Lady Helen, is a heart-warming regency romance. I had previously read two of the author’s earlier works and been quite impressed so kind of binge reading her backlist right now. I found Unmasking Lady Helen a bit different in tone than the other two. But it’s a very lovely story that you’ll definitely end up loving.
Unmasking Lady Helen is the first book of The Kinsey Family. Lady Helen, the eldest daughter of Lord Kinsey, a researcher and an explorer, is what you’d call a ‘mother hen’. Well, our hero definitely thought she was! A loving eldest daughter who loves to take care of her family, Helen is an all around sweetheart. Her siblings range from 22 yrs. old heir Harry to 18yrs. old Diana the debutante, 14yrs. old Toby to the youngest, 4/5 yrs. old Alexander whom everybody affectionately calls Zander. Helen herself is 24. She was never married and hopes to become the spinster aunt as time passes. She likes helping around the house, take care of her siblings, especially Zander who is completely crazy for her. She also likes to help her mother with her charity and everything else that may need her attention in frequent absence of their traveler father.
In truth, Helen would love to marry and have her own family. But a tragic incident during her first season ruined her chances. Today Helen is afraid to trust a man who is not of her family, to that length, let alone thinking of a future with him. Her parents are very protective of her, though her siblings have no idea. Not their fault, all 3 were pretty young and Zander wasn’t probably even born. Helen would also like to spread her wings and travel with her father. It’s one of her dreams that she knows won’t come true because of her gender. Plus her father still thinks of her as a fragile thing, though she’d recovered quite well and doing fine now. But one can always dream and Helen has been dreaming about that for a while now.
Unbeknownst to Helen, things were about to change as Lord Peyton enters her life one fine morning. It was the ever curious Diana noticed him walking and keeping vigil close to their house. Helen wasn’t that interested in a stranger, while Diana was way too interested. She’d even taken note of his noble feature and handsome physique and was beyond intrigued by him! They do end up making an acquaintance when Peyton or Jason (wish I could remember his surname :/, don’t think I read any in the book) decides to drop by. He was actually keeping watch for an unknown informant who was to meet him in front of the Kinsey House. When that individual failed to show up, Jason had been quite disappointed. But he also noticed that one of the Kinsey girls and a boy who could only be her brother, surreptitiously watching him. It was one of those things you can’t really ignore. He knew about the famous explorer Lawrence Kinsey quite well, why not introduce himself? After all he’s supposed to be investigating and already guessed that his elusive informant may live around this area.
Jason is also the eldest in his family, the heir to the title. He has a windowed younger sister called Lizzy who has just gotten out of the mourning, while his scamp of a bother Charles is always getting entangled in one scrape or the other. Jason isn’t unhappy in life but he sometimes wishes he had more to look forward to. Marriage wasn’t one of the things he wanted to jump in, especially after the death of his fiancée in a reckless riding accident. But I don’t think he didn’t find the idea abhorrent either. And he was assured of the fact that if he doesn’t sire any heir, Charles can always take over after he’s gone.
Jason has weathered the war, been a spy to the Crown. When it was supposed to be a time to settle down, and relax into boredom, he was called by his superiors to take note of something important. A letter sent by the above mentioned unknown individual, wanting to meet Lord Peyton to exchange some valuable information. Since he was specifically asked for, Jason had to get involved in the investigation, which led him to the Kinsey House as the meeting place. But where was this person? Jason wasn’t sure if it was some kind of joke or not and was getting impatient.
Jason’s meeting to the Kinseys was rather interesting. They were a jolly, tight-knit bunch. Jason had to figure out something to tell them about his presence in front of their house, but he considered this particular visit a success. Though Lady Diana was a tall, willowy blonde beauty who’d surely win many hearts when she debuts, Jason’s attentions were instantly captured by her more subdued older sister, Helen. Helen wasn’t as chatty as Diana but her reserve gave her a certain elegant air. She wasn’t as tall and rather curvy but she was all Jason could see. So much so that when he learned from Lady Kinsey’s words that recently, a manservant had fallen violently ill rather suddenly and passed on, he became instantly alert. This can’t be a co-incidence, can it? Was this the man he was looking for?
The answer to his question was revealed when he found Bartholomew or Bart had indeed been the man he’s been looking for. He knew Bart while in the army, who worked under him and was someone he liked. His sudden death that looked suspiciously like poisoning brought many questions and no answer. But above all, Jason became worried for the Kinseys, especially Helen who has already stolen his heart. He instinctively knew that they maybe in danger. With the absence of Lord Kinsey, he takes it upon himself to be the protector of the family until he found out who is behind this nefarious plot and why.
Helen, who was determined to never marry almost as much, if not more than Jason himself, couldn’t shake Jason off her mind. She was sure this won’t go anywhere but forgetting him was easier said than done. Jason was all she could think of. He was everything she could dream of in a prospective husband; tall, handsome and a veritable gentleman. He’s also kind and gracious with her, never behaving in a way to rouse any apprehension. Yet he let her know in so many ways that he wanted her. To Helen, there was no greater aphrodisiac because she felt safe with him. And if you read her backstory, you can easily associate why that was so, so important for her! Helen also appreciated the fact that Jason loved his own family, his siblings as much as she did hers, which was a boon in itself. She could so fall in love with a man like him! If only.............
Though both of them thought it was best that they try to stay away from each-other, it would’ve never happened, for Jason was almost always around Kinsey House because of the investigation, and Helen decided to become his assistant. LOL They soon figured out they liked being together way too much to overlook it. The attraction was there, so was the longing. So how could they stay away?
The rest of the story was rather uncomplicated. No headache-inducing drama anywhere which I absolutely loved. You just know that Jason and Helen belong together as you cheer them along the way when they investigate the murder of Bart and uncover the truth. There was another sub-plot concerning Jason’s sister Lizzy too. I can only hope that that’s leading to her own book. And it seems Charlie and Diana have already formed an attachment. ;) We’re not introduced to all the Kinseys yet but I really hope to in the next installments. Eagerly looking forward to the next in the series. 4 stars and recommended!

Well Written! This is the kind story in which one can immerse oneself and enjoy. There is a murder, an adventure where a baddie is tracked down, two lovely main characters, a really nice family support team and to top if all, I really enjoyed watching the two main characters fall in love. In addition, it is well written and I can happily recommend it. I felt I had been very nicely entertained, thank you!
Lady Helen Kinsey suffers a traumatic incident during her first Season, and now at twenty-four has given up on love. As she prepares her younger sister, the vivacious Diana, for her first ball, the sisters wonder why a strange man is watching their house. Lord Peyton works for the government and seeks the truth about a threat to the Crown. His information brings him to the home of the famous explorer, Lord Kinsey. He meets the Kinsey sisters, and is impressed by Helen's intelligence, but she has an underlying sadness and hides behind an emotionless wall. Maggi Andersen knows how to weave intelligent, realistic characters into an intriguing plot. I thoroughly enjoyed Peyton's espionage adventures, and Helen's painful secret isn't revealed until near the end. Will either of them shed their pasts and find love? The story keeps you guessing.
A wonderful book!! Peyton has has vowed never to marry, he is taking care if his widowed sister and scamp of a brother when he is asked by Whitehall to investigate something. He stands outside the Kinsey home for several days waiting for his contact to no avail. When one of the Kinsey's footman die and it's discovered to be poison Peyton becomes suspicious when he finds out the footman used to be a man in his unit. This is a wonderful read with a little mystery, intrigue and finally love for two hearts that need healing!!
Romance, mystery, intrigue and spice. An excellent book! I couldn't stop reading this book. Helen is smart, funny and so sweet. Jason is smart, funny and strong. This is one of the best feel good stories I have read in a long time. Highly recommended.
Everything I want in recency romance plus a bit of mystery
Well-written storytelling layered with detail and backstory and the interplay of several mysteries among the numerous characters. I was so fulfilled by the racing experience, I was surprised that the book is not overlong. I was never confused by the characters or the dialog. I never had to re-read sections to clarify who was speaking. I was able to be completely unfolded in the story and love the characters as their characteristics unfolded.
The mystery itself brought the characters together. It was not terrifying, horrifying or gothic. It was an investigation, surrounded by ancient Egyptian artifacts. I loved how Anderson deftly wove in many details of classical gods and goddesses, ancient and current languages without interrupting the flow of the story.
Lady Helen was intelligent straight forward and lovely! She had her confidence stolen and has resigned herself to spinster status. Lord Jason is a retired spy of sorts and in his 30s also resigned to just oversee his estates although his reasons for not marrying are disclosed but not to Helen! Jason and Helen are thrown together after and untimely death of a footman! All the people in Lady Helen's home are not what they seem! Jason is very attracted to Helen and can't stop kissing her! As matters heat up in both houses will Lady Helen past define her future?
This book has all tbe properties of a great romance with all the trimmings. A sometimes absent father who is immersed in antiquities, a beautiful lady who is several years beyond her debut, a villian in the past as well as one in the present to muck things up all around this charmingly written book. I am looking forward to reading tbe next in series of the Kinsey Famjly. It promises to be excellent.
I got this book through a giveaway. I hope others enjoy it as much as i did.
I really enjoyed reading this book about the Kinsey family and the Peyton family. When a servant in the Kinsey dies by arsenic poison Bart was trying to give information to Lord Peyton. Now the family is wondering if they have a killer living in the house? I recommend this book!!
Sweet and comfortable read. Characters were well developed. I wish the mystery was a little more intense. I look forward to reading more of this author.
I really enjoyed this book. I love a good mystery add a love story to that equals a wonderful read. The characters are fabulous and entertaining. I look forward to the next book in this series.
What a lovely story, if you enjoy historical romances this is definitely for you. Well written it’s exciting and sooo... romantic. I’m looking forward to reading more from this author.
I really enjoyed this book. It was different from other romances but Jason and Helen are an interesting couple. The addition of the mysteries gave the story an additional twist. I hope we get to see what is in store for Lizzy next.
I enjoyed this story very much. Helen wanted true love so badly but was scared to give her heart and Jason was just the man to whittle away that wall around her heart. Very enjoyable read and I recommend this book.
A sweet, clean tale, expertly woven to ensnare attention and capture a reader's imagination. A new favourite to be daughter after and each book treasured!
Unmasking Lady Helen - Kinsey Family # 1 by Maggi Anderson. My thoughts: This is a delightful historical romance with lovely characters set in 1821 London.
A little mystery and intrigue sets the scene for a lovely romance, with engaging characters and well written plot. Helen and Jason make a great couple and I enjoyed their romance and journey.
This well-written and researched regency mystery-romance started off a bit lofty and slow, but soon the reader was able to emerge into the mystery aspect of the story. Appreciate the time that went into the research of the era amidst learning something new in the process. Enjoyed the overall plot making a regency romance into something more and intriguing. Though somewhat confused by the sudden ending via appearance of Helen's dog out of nowhere (unless this leads into the next novel). Overall, enjoyed this unique novel.
I am one of Ms Andersen’s many fans. Her well-researched, spicy Regency romances always sweep me from the present to times past. I knew I would enjoy Unmasking Lady Helen but with a hero, who spies for the government, a murder, Lady Helen who longs to accompany her father, an Egyptologist on his travels the story captured me. In addition, neither Lady Helen nor Jason, Lord Peyton, wish to marry, but mutual attraction slowly develops into passionate, tender loveR
This is a delightful story of love that develops during a murder investigation. Jason and Helen’s story is enjoyable. The other characters are well drawn and there are several mini plots to explore. A good example of Maggi’s books.
