I've tried to read one book from the Big Nate series before, but I don't know why I didn't like and finished it. I thought that would be the first and last time that I would have the chance to read any book from this famous graphic novel series. However, when I saw that there's an available ARC of the latest book, I grabbed the chance to check if it would change my view. And compared to the previous book in the series that I've read, which I can't remember the title, this latest installment is much better and funnier.
Big Nate: Silent But Deadly
Although it is meant for middle-grade readers, young adults and even older readers will love the comic panels and banters among the characters. Reading this change my opinion about this comic series and I would definitely check the previously released books of Big Nate.

This is my first Big Nate read. Nate is a sixth grader who is well acquainted with detention.
description
In this collection, Nate wants to be an undercover reporter for ‘The Bugle’. He also assists the school picture day photographer and discovers that students aren’t the only ones flashing their pearly whites.
description
Nate decides he wants to win the Student of the Month award, to the amusement of his long suffering teachers.
description
Gina and Francis face off in the Fact Town Smackdown, which ends with a cliffhanger.
description
Outside of school, Nate goes trick or treating, exchanges Christmas presents with his family and attempts to hide his report card from his father. He also surprises his father by doing some gardening. Sort of.
description
I had no idea who was who before I started reading but I got a sense of each characters’ personality within this collection. While Nate annoyed me in the beginning, he began to grow on me towards the end of the collection. If I kept reading this series I think my favourite character would end up being one of Nate’s classmates rather than Nate himself, but I can see why kids would enjoy this series.

The comics were a mixed bag for me; some made me chuckle and others made me wish I was reading Peanuts instead. I understood the pop culture references but only because I’m old; I doubt kids would have even heard of Magnum P.I.
These strips appeared in newspapers from October 6, 2013, through March 29, 2014.
Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the opportunity to read this graphic novel. I’m rounding up from 3.5 stars.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

My second Big Nate comic, I don’t know why I didn’t request the others when they were on Netgalley, since this comic is just too much fun!

The biggest focus in this one is Gina (and her silent, but oh so deadly farts). She pops in a lot of the comics + is also found on the cover (and the title is a reference to her farts). I have to say that I didn’t like Gina. Yes, when she was infatuated with that guy in her class, she showed something else than terrible attitude, but for most? I don’t want her around that much. Know-it-alls get on my nerves. Thinking they are way more superior than others. Bleh! I did love the Fact Town Smackdown and what happened there (though I sure didn’t see that Wacky Plot Twist coming).

I had a laugh at Nate and his amazing nose. Boy, that is one skill he could use later in life. Given his school-record, I think he will need something amazing, like his nose, to save him. :P It was quite fun how people doubted him and then he could just pick out everything + more.

I liked that Nate tried to go for that trophy. Of course, those who read these comics know that Nate is never going to get a trophy, well, maybe if there was a terrible student trophy (sorry, Nate) or guy with the most detentions.

Other topics include finding a new comic (and is it betrayal if you like that MC more than your favourite comic?), basketball, monopoly (no, Nate, that is not how it works), Christmas presents, School Picture Day, and many many more.

The only thing I didn’t quite like was that at times it got a bit confusing as we were in the midst of a topic (for instant the Fact Town Smackdown) only to have another comic pop up in between things. It would have been better had the topics stuck together.

The art was so-so. At times Nate didn’t look like a kid, but more like an old man, mostly when he turned around his head or tried to look sideways.

But I definitely liked this book, and I hope to read more Big Nate books in the future.

Thank you to Net Galley for a free copy of this book in trade for an honest review.

Ooh…wow…this is a funny, cute, witty read. It’s my first book of Big Nate and I totally L.O.V.E it. Honestly, I’m having another bad day because my client haven’t paid my fee. So, I landed with a Big Nate book this afternoon, courtesy of Net Galley and feel a bit better. There are some part that I really need to laugh because it’s so funny and logical.

Nate is obviously a smart and creative kid. He has the right answers for everything. In my country, they would call this type of kid naughty and unruly. It really gives the parents headache. Living in a place where you are expected to be perfect, it might be strange to read something like this.

The funny thing is, his best friends can’t actually stand him but they know sometimes he made sense. What I like is his interactions with the adults. The answers he gave them are smart, funny and somehow rings too much of truth we adults don’t want to hear. For example: what’s Mrs. Godfrey New Year’s wish? Losing weight! And he got send to the headmaster for being honest.

The story obviously made you want to get back into childhood again (minus the school drill of course). I have to admit, I’m quite impressed that a sixth grader could answer things logically like Nate. Some of the characters are also quite familiar. There are the popular kid who everybody loves, the cool guy, the bully, the nerd who knows everything and the regular kid.

Love the illustration style. It’s simple with solid lines and bright colors. It’s suitable for kids. The expressions of the characters are also comical and very expressive.

Recommend for those who loves to laugh, need an uplifting from a bad day, like comic books with solid color illustration and funny characters.

This was my introduction to the Big Nate series. My eight year old and I are big fans of graphic novels, and have read a lot of Stick Dog and Captain Underpants. Big Nate, in comparison, feels old-fashioned, reminiscent of the old Peanuts comics with a dash of Calvin & Hobbes. Like the older comics, Big Nate's adventures are largely non-serial, confined to a one or two page spread.

In Silent But Deadly, we follow Nate through Christmas festivities, school mishaps, banter with his friend/nemesis, Gina, and a short-lived campaign to become student of the month. I especially liked the vignettes of Nate in the comic book store - that's a scenario I can certainly relate to! His acute sense of smell was also funny.

There was a bit of dated pop culture (musical references, mostly), and some old-fashioned cliched sayings that made me wonder if kids would get them, or not. Other than that, I enjoyed this gentle, humorous collection.

Thank you to Andrews McMeel Publishing and Netgalley for an ARC.

Nate is navigating middle school as best he can. He helps the rookies in detention but can't really find his way as an investigative reporter. His noisy stomach disrupts the class, but his work as the Great Nose-ini, sniffing out potential food allergens, helps save lives. He is a loyal if annoying friend, even if he isn't really Student of the Month material. But most of all, Nate keeps things interesting.

Big Nate: Silent But Deadly is a collection of the Big Nate comics that takes you from Halloween through Groundhog Day, showing all the crazy adventures of Nate and his classmates and friends. It's a fun and entertaining collection for middle graders on up, celebrating the best of childhood as well as the challenges of sixth grade.

Cartoonist Lincoln Peirce uses his clever cartoons to entertain us while reminding us what it's like to be a kid. I loved Big Nate: Silent But Deadly, and I recommend it to anyone who needs a smile, no matter what your age.

Galleys for Big Nate: Silent But Deadly were provided by Andrews McMeel Publishing through NetGalley, with many thanks.

I received a digital copy of this book from Andrews McMeel Publishing via NetGalley.

I don't have much to say about this book. I didn't care for it. Some bits were funny, but only just. Given that there's stiff competition out there, Lincoln Peirce needs to try harder. I would much rather read an installment of Wimpy Kid or Timmy Failure than another Nate book.
Of course there will be plenty of kids from the target audience reading these books, and nothing I can say or rate is gonna change that. Hell, I could only read this one from NetGalley because there's hardly ever a Big Nate book left on the shelf.

But since it's my review I'm gonna give it 3 MEH STARS.

This is my first Big Nate book, I appreciate the opportunity provided to me by NetGalley to get a free electronic copy of this book.

This was fun, and I think I would have LOVED IT as a kid, it is defiantly for a younger audience but it was an enjoyable and a light quick read.

I think I would check out more Big Nate books in the future.

I must confess it’s been a while since I’ve picked up a daily newspaper, so I was not aware that Big Nate was a daily comic strip. Judging from the book covers and the proliferation of BN volumes, I assumed it was more of a Pilkey/Wimpy Kid genre. Definitely Schulz-inspired, but Pierce includes adult characters! I especially got a kick out of Peter, the Mayor of Fact Town 😂 who reminded me of that notable child actor Jacob Laval.

Celebrate your inner child with this new Big Nate & gang collection. This guilty pleasure is chock full of laughs and middle school hijinx courtesy of Nate & company. Nate's antics will have you in stitches. Whether it be his growling stomach or his amazing nose skills able to detect among other things classmate Gina's "silent but deadly" flatulence. Everyone's favourite 6th grader and his friends not only crack us up in this book; they also teach us some important life lessons including:
• REO Speedwagon tunes can fix any broken relationship
• Gift cards are a rip-off
• Weather forecasters cannot be trusted
• When playing Monopoly you should not cheat, but rather exploit loopholes
• Jedi Master Yoda, teaches us “always pass on what you have learned”
This collection is a barrel of chuckles regardless of your age, and is highly recommended to all fans of the Big Nate comic series.
Thank you very much to the publisher for providing a copy of the ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Silent But Deadly is a really enjoyable installment in the Big Nate series. One thing in particular that I love about this series (and other middle-grade books like it) is that it allows the opportunity for me to share a love of reading with my niece and nephew and that, more than anything, is what's so special about middle grade books; they open up doors for kids to share what is funny, special and meaningful for them. While Silent But Deadly brings lots of laughs, it's also a treasured way for families to share laughter, thoughts and, best of all, a good book.

Another installment in the Big Nate comics series, this book has all the trademarks of previous books: humour, good drawing, fun characters, and interesting new plots. The Great Nose-ini was especially hilarious, punchline everywhere, as was the trivia smackdown between Francis and Gina, which added a little suspense to the story. It was another Big Nate classic.

You know those little "f" bombs that sneak up on you when you least expect it, then "poof" they make themselves known, catching you unaware. That's what Lincoln Peirce does in his latest comic edition, Big Nate: Silent but Deadly, where the jokes catch you off guard, not quietly this time, but with a force which causes an explosive, deafening laugh that the reader can't quite hold in.

It's 6th grade (again) for Nate and his friends (there's even an inside joke about an endless loop of repeating sixth grade, over and over!) and they are at it again with Nate combating his nemesis, teacher Mrs Godfrey, and trying to find ways to outsmart teacher's pet & know-it-all Gina, such as a Fact Town Smackdown between her and Francis. Of course Nate and his friends are rooting for Francis - "You're a geek, but your OUR geek!" With a look at Detention (Note on pass given to Nate: The Usual), Class Picture Day (Where Mr Galvin is asked to show us his teeth, and his dentures accidentally fall out - Response: "These scientists are so literal."), and Romance (Gina has a crush on Chad whose C.Q. - Cuteness Quotient - is off the charts). Holidays are a hoot, from Halloween to Christmas (After taking Nate to buy a present for his sister, his dad quips - "And this is why gift cards were invented."), to a Monopoly Marathon on New Year's Eve playing by Nate's Rules.

School is in the fun zone and there's lots of chuckles when Nate attempts to be Student of the Month, interviews a teacher for the school paper, and finds himself outmatched at a school basketball game. Chad is able to outsmart a bully by opening Nate's locker, knocking the jerk over with all the junk unexpectedly spewing out. Nate's retort: "I might have to start charging a user's fee."

Nate's talents as the Great Nose-Ini are explored as well as his ability to irk all the adults leaving them shaking their heads and lamenting, "I hate my life", with even the Principal wondering "If could trade jobs with another" once he's done dealing with Nate.

The one two punch of each cartoon is enhanced by the descriptive illustrations with facial expressions, or lack thereof, lifting the comedy up to the next level.

To sum it up is the line - "He's confusing me." To which I respond "Welcome to my world." But in a good way.

Four stars and a thank you to Netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Big Nate: Silent but Deadly was written by Lincoln Peirce. I was very excited about the opportunity to read this book because my oldest daughter is a big fan of the Big Nate comic strip and I knew that she would be interested in reading it too.

Nate is an average American boy who goes to elementary school. He has somewhat of a contentious relationship with teachers and administrators, and he has friends and adversaries within the school community. He’s a bright boy, but he doesn’t like to do schoolwork, which is something most children can empathize with. He plays sports, and interacts with his family.

My daughter thinks that Big Nate is very funny, and this is one of her favorite comic strips. One thing that she pointed out to me was that one of the characters moved away in another book, but she has not moved away in this book. So, even though this book was published more recently, the range of strips appears to be earlier than some of the other books. This didn’t affect her enjoyment, but it’s something she noticed right away.

I would recommend Big Nate: Silent but Deadly to middle grade readers. Big Nate is a cute comic strip, and I think it’s one that elementary school students would enjoy. This is just a collection, so readers don’t have to read any of the other Big Nate books before this one. My daughter is already looking forward to more Big Nate collections, so she will be re-reading her other books while waiting for the next book.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book.

big NATE is a series of comics and readers for middle schoolers.  I've bought several of the readers to read with some middle schoolers that I worked with but never got around to reading them.  This was my first foray into the world of big NATE.

I have to say, I really enjoyed this comic series.  It stars Nate and his group of friends like Francis, Teddy, Chad, Peter and his rival Gina.  This comic really reminds me a lot of a mix between Calvin & Hobbes and Jimmy Neutron and I really like it.

The art work isn't anything spectacular but it does it's job in a nice clean way that I like.  Not too busy with shading or an overabundance of colors, fairly simple in its design and coloring that reminds me of a Sunday Comic Strip.

Overall, I found it to be funny, charming and very likable.  I think I'm going to enjoy reading the rest of the series.

Now, one thing I did notice is that several times in the book it indicates the book was printed in China.  Really?  Are we so desperate for a few pennies saved to print the books in China and ship them over here? That is really disappointing to me that a simple product like a book is now being imported from China now.

And the book as with all big NATE books does have DRM.  So of course I have to subtract 1 point for it having DRM.

The humor in the Big Nate series is something of a guilty pleasure, because most of the time he's such a jerk to everyone around him. Then, he'll save one of his friends from a bully with a well-aimed snowball.
I think that my only real complaint about the series overall is that none of the adults come across well, which seems odd at time.
This volume has some classic stories, including the nerd showdown of the decade. There are also strips devoted to the love affair between Nate's dog and the otherwise scary cat belonging to Francis, set to the music of REO Speedwagon. No, really. I'm sure it could happen...
I do wish there had been more of the "Great Nose-ini" sequence of strips, since the idea is very funny. I mean, being able to smell ingredients, down to beta carotene, is a pretty impressive power.

'Big Nate: Silent But Deadly' by Lincoln Peirce is the 18th (!) volume in the series of comics about mischief maker Big Nate.

This time around, Big Nate breaks in a new kid in detention. He also runs a campaign to be Student of the Month, and tries to convince teachers and fellow students. My favorite series in this collection might be his upscale movie reviews for the school newspaper.

This is a fun series, and it has stayed consistently funny, even if the main character is old enough to have graduated high school by now.

My name is merhawi and I'm in 8th grade and the book that I'm reviewing is Big Nate silent but deadly. The book is mostly about a kid who is in middle school and how his life goes by. It starts off in the summer and how they were enjoying it but then Nate starts to act delusional and starts seeing his history teacher everywhere. His friends started making fun of him. He hates his teacher because he feels like his teacher is bias. When he goes back to school on the first day he gets in trouble. I think it is a 5-star book and I suggest it to other people.

I recommend you read Big Nate in Silent but Deadly if you are an Comic fan, or a Big Nate fan, with the great Nose-Ini, who is Nate whi can smell trouble a mile away! Who
Can smell anybody about a mile away! Who can smell in somebody’s Lunch! Who can smell ANYTHING about a mile away!

One reason why I recommend this book is because of the funny parts. Like the look on Randy’s face (Randy is the School Bully) when Nate smelled in his lunchbox and told what was inside it, Randy’s look was like,”What the hell” when Nate told him and Randy thought that it could have been that he was peeking from the blindfold.
