Homer is the story of a Pennsylvania farm boy who struggled through the trials of a fractured family, unexpectedly went off to fight the Germans in WWII, and returned home to make a life with his young family in tow. It’s a story like many others of that time that are so easily lost or forgotten. I write this story so it will be remembered. And to me, it is a story unlike all those others, because it is the story of my own family.
What a great gift the author has given his family. Far too many times these heroic stories leave with our heroes. You can tell the author loved his grandfather and wanted to keep his legacy alive. Peter has done his Bonpa proud.
As for the book: This is a compelling and very fast read. I finished it in one sitting. Saying that though, I wasn't short changed. The story from farm life kid to war hero was captivating. I imagined it was a similar story for a lot of middle America farm kids back when we were swept into WWII. All nervous and scared I am sure but all answered the call to serve and honor our great country. Homer (a real person) was no different. He served his country bravely and settled into a good life. It's great to read stories like this about real Americans, especially when they are part of the greatest generation to have ever represented this country. I would recommend this book to everyone.
