Isabelle Karmazin is a Jew. And being Jewish in France during WWII is a dangerous thing. After her husband is killed, she is hauled off to a prison camp. She escapes with help from French allies (?), and is passed from hand to hand. Her fears of being deceived slowly ebb away.

Marcel Boussant, a young Christian Frenchman, longs to do anything he can to help rid their country of German occupation and help the Jews. One day his pastor tells him there is something he can do for the Jews—something inglorious, but something worthwhile. And dangerous. Marcel accepts the challenge, and begins by delivering messages to other people. It seems easy enough. Until one day, when a beautiful young Jewish woman comes to stay at his house.

Isabelle, pregnant with her dead husband’s child, but still thin, finds herself enjoying life with the Boussants. They accept her—all but Marcel, it seems.

Marcel fights the feelings that well up inside him for Isabelle. He doesn’t want to fall in love. He has a mission, and he’s sticking to it: deliver Isabelle to her next contact. But something goes wrong, and Marcel is left with the dangerous job of taking Isabelle to the border of Switzerland himself.

This book, though a bit confusing and slow at first, picks up and doesn’t let you go.
