This was the second book I read of Marc McGowen. It's the first in the series.

I enjoyed the story. The main FMC is a feisty older female who is full of spunk. The pacing is a slow burn for most of the book. The closing did have me on the edge of my seat. The characters are believable. I liked the interaction between them, especially the good guys.

I look forward to reading more from this author. With this book i received several character cards that were really well drawn.

This book series would make a good limited series.

Update: Hell’s Embrace is 1 book in a series of interconnected standalones. I didn’t know that going in, but that makes more sense.

Overall I liked the story. The beginning hooks you and the ending is epic, but you do have to push through the middle a bit because the pace slows down. I was frustrated however that we were left with so many questions about Kim’s husband. I didn’t feel like the mystery surrounding his death served a purpose and it muddied the plot. If there’s a sequel that I just don’t know about where these questions get answered, I’m happy to update my review.
