It’s 1999 and Danielle is living the working in New York City, creating a brand-new life for herself, and looking for romance. On the cusp of finding just what she’s always dreamed of, memories of past trauma threaten to interfere with what may be the love story of a lifetime. As she moves forward, she will have to decide if she is defined by her past, doomed by her past, or perhaps made better because of it.
I don’t know if I can put into words how wonderful this book was.
As I sit here with a box of tissues next to me feeling like my heart has been ripped out all over again I can only say that this book is so much more than a romance story.
Following the story of Danielle originally from upstate NY and now working in the city, battling her past, grinding it out each day of her present and opening up to a future that is filled with uncertainty I recommend everyone read this and get to know Danielle her friends and New York City, a place that is very close to my heart.
The book that changed me and I will never forget it!
Danielle has moved to New York City to start a new life, to leave her past behind and build her new future in totally different place to her hometown. But her past will haunt her until she makes her own peace with it, which isn’t as simple in her case. Luckily or based on fate, she has the best friends that can help her to get through nearly everything and a man, fate or God sends to cross her life and change it forever. When she doesn’t believe she can move on and be in real relationship, it only takes that one person to change it all…but only if she has it in herself to finally deal with her past.
If you are looking for a book that will give you all possible emotions, book that will make you think, give you hope, show you forgiveness and love, so much love, you just found it. I can guarantee you will meet your ultimate book crush and carry him in your heart forever.
Writing a review for this book is one of the most difficult ones I’ve ever written. There is so much I would love to say or write, just to make you all read it. For the sake of the story and to make sure you enjoy it as much as this book deserves, this is as much I will say without giving anything away and ruining the plot.
Crossing Lex is heartbreaking story so well written you won’t even notice it’s 700+ pages long so don’t be scared. You will enjoy every page and will wish for more when it ends. It left me with serious book hangover and I will treasure this story in my heart and mind forever. My one piece of advice to you would be, keep tissues near by, you are going to need them!
Thank you to Debby Caruso for the read of Crossing Lex.
When I finished reading Crossing Lex, I had to sit back for awhile as it sank in, and then, I let it go.
It hits you where the hurt and terror of 9/11 lives - right in the heart.
Debby builds up her story slowly, giving the reader plenty of time to connect with her very real and vulnerable characters. She wholly captures and portrays each of them in all of their perfectly flawed human nature. Danielle is like a true-to-life friend who is always there for you, fun to be with and always has your back. Yet like most of us, life has bounced her around and she is left emotionally scarred by the dysfunctional relationships with her mother and father, and weighed down by love wounds from her past.
While it may not seem to have that happy-ever-after ending, I would say it could. Even though I cried for Danielle and Paul and their utter despair, all is not completely lost.
Danielle’s deep sorrow and broken spirit lifted up the person in her life who actually needed rescuing the most.
When God closes one door, even if He opens up a window by the tiniest crack, there is renewed hope.
You will just have to read this wonderful book to know what I mean.
I thank Debby Caruso for the pleasure of reading her book.
Danielle is a young woman who had a trying childhood. She is the product of a failed marriage and an even worse failed step father. Like many kids today, she lost her identity when her parents divorced. She spent her whole life not knowing her worth. When she meets the man of her dreams she hesitates and makes excuses for why she can't commit to a relationship. She had a difficult time coming to terms with her childhood experiences and learning how she could love and be loved again. When she finally meets the man of her dreams, her past haunts her and the future of their relationship lies in the hands of 9-11 terrorists. Although I loved Danielle's journey, and was moved by her realizations of life, I often wished she would offer more of her past life experiences instead of her day to day, minute by minute experience. The flashbacks to her childhood offered the reader a vivid picture of
her upbringing and why she hesitates the way she does in love and life. I wished many of the scenes could have been elaborated on and many that were elaborated on could have been summarized. All in all, this was a beautiful story of life, love, and perseverance.
Ms. Caruso pulled me into her first book Merry Hanukkah (or what I call the story of my life!) so when I saw she had published a new book I grabbed it. When I saw that it was over 600 pages, I confess I was happy – sometimes I like losing myself, and I am not ready to leave a book after only 320 pages. I really enjoyed this book. Great story, characters the whole pie. However, I had a few minor disconnects. First, the book takes place in New York City before 9/11 and ends a year after it – which made me figure out the ending pretty quickly. Second, the main character Danielle has had a tumultuous childhood that now impacts her life as an adult. I know I already said how long the book is, but I really would have liked more on Danielle’s younger years. Bottom line – I would suggest this book without a second thought, and this author makes my short list of “I want to read whatever they write.”
A young woman's journey to find the truth about herself and how she could love again.

You know how you read that one book sometimes and it just sticks with you? That is totally this book, Crossing Lex. I read this book almost a year ago and I am still thinking about this book. I'm thinking about it so much that I felt compelled to come back here and write my thoughts out.
Crossing Lex is about a young woman that had a very interesting (and not necessarily in a good way) childhood. As a result of that, she has a difficult time committing when she has found the perfect man. At first, it can be frustrating to see her hesitate with this perfect guy. We, the reader, can see how perfect he is for her. Through her flashbacks, we start to see glimpses of why she is the way she is and when she finally commits, you find yourself jumping for joy.
Debby Caruso does an amazing job with character development. I felt like I really knew these characters. So much so, that I wished they were real so I could be friends with them in real life.
I had be given this book as a gift from my friend who quite simply said, you have to read this. From the first page, I was transfixed into the story. I totally fell for Danielle and Paul, watching their relationship start from a chance meeting to love. I completely felt protective of Danielle and was willing her on through all her battles with her difficult past. It’s a long book but it didn’t feel like it, you become so submerged in the story that you don’t realise how long you had been reading for! I was so keen to find out the outcome, yet I didn’t want it to end. I’m amazed that this is the first novel by this author, her dialogue is absolutely amazing. The characters, you take them to your heart straight away. So many emotions from one book. I will be thinking of these characters for a very long time. They feel like part of my life now, how deeply this book as affected me. It’s just so brilliant and I’m grateful for the recommendation.
AMAZINGLY written. So much so that I felt myself so connected that I was in love with Paul (the boyfriend), I was best friends with Lanie (Danielle's best friend), and I understood Constance (the therapist) and loved to hate her. Seriously every minute of this story had me tied in. Any free minute i could find, I was sneaking a page or two in. Debby did an excellent job in portraying different time frames as she told the stories from danielle's past and then traveled throughout a few years in the present story. I didn't miss a beat, never felt lost or confused, and enjoyed every bit of falling in love with Paul and Danielle. Excellent all around! Now...... bring on the sequel!!
