Kim Reaper, Vol. 1: Grim Beginnings
Part-Time Grim Reaper. Full-Time Cutie!
Like most university students, Kim works a part-time job to make ends meet. Unlike most university students, Kim's job is pretty cool: she's a grim reaper, tasked with guiding souls into the afterlife.
Like most university students, Becka has a super intense crush. Unlike most university students, Becka's crush is on a beautiful gothic angel that frequents the underworld. Of course, she doesn't know that.
Unaware of the ghoulish drama she's about to step into, Becka finally gathers up the courage to ask Kim on a date! But when she falls into a ghostly portal and interrupts Kim at her job, she sets off a chain of events that will pit the two of them against angry cat-dads, vengeful zombies, and perhaps even the underworld itself. But if they work together, they just might make it... and maybe even get a smooch in the bargain.

Diversity does not equal a good book
I love diversity in comics.
It can enrich a story dramatically and act as a backdrop for enhancing the story. Kim Reaper focuses so much on diversity and representation that the story falls absolutely flat and relies on internet humour that is subpar.
"Characters"
I'm not too fond of Kim. I don't like Becka much either. The plot is centred around internet and humour found in Gravity Falls. I don't feel like this comic brings anything new to the table. The weirdness seems forced - it seems as if it took on weirdness in order to feel special or different when in fact it is not at all unique. It's all centred around pandering to internet humour and PC. The romance is completely rushed and I feel the characters had no connection or prior knowledge on which to build their relationship. Kim and Becka already go on a date in issue 2! The romance is the central focus of the story, and yet it is so poorly written. Becka and Kim already experience relationship issues from issue 2 and have no healthy way of solving it. This does not bode well for them or for my sanity.

Kim is a terrible Grim Reaper. Kim is such a horrible human being who does not have a trace of empathy despite having such an important job that is rooted in morality.
The plot
The plot does not include an outline or goal. The comic mostly consists of the rambling and wandering of Kim and Becka. Whatever the two of them do, there is no consequence. A plot without consequence is a poor plot and a character without consequence is a poor, poor character.

This comic has terrible writing. It’s staler than the toast I forgot to eat this morning.

Kim Reaper is a positively adorable story about two college girls falling in love and fighting baddies! Becka is an innocent baker looking for a fun date with her crush, only to find out that her crush, Kim, is a part-time grim reaper! Antics ensue, and the entire ordeal is precious, hilarious, fun, and diverse! While the writing was cheesy and young at points, I had so much fun reading Kim Reaper and would totally pick up the next volume.

What would you do if you encountered a soul reaper? I would be curious just like Becka and I will hide to watch what that reaper will do. But I would never have the guts to talk to him/her, no matter how tame-looking that reaper looks like. However, Becka is quite different because aside from the fact that she's a very inquisitive character, she likes Kim the Reaper. Because of this, Becka got entangled with Kim's situation and problems as a reaper.
The story of Kim Reaper is narrated in both the equal perspective of Becka and Kim. The illustrations are also adorably drawn just like the story; the author, Sarah Graley, did an awesome job on the pacing of the story and on the plot line. Graley is not only a comic artist, she is also a good storyteller because she was able to come up with not only a good plot, but on how to make readers engrossed in the story.

Too cutesy and squee for me. Becka has a crush on Kim Reaper. She accidentally gets pulled into one of Kim's jobs as a grim reaper while trying to ask Kim out. The rest of book revolves around Kim's reaping job. There's a lot of stream of consciousness story here and no larger plotting going on. It almost feels like a web comic where it's just a couple of jokes and then you return the next day for another dose of the same thing.

Kim Reaper Vol. 1: Grim Beginnings combines the first four issues of this fun new series. Becka and Kim are both studying fine arts at university but Becka’s crush on Kim, which consists of staring dreamily at the back of her head in class, is the sum total of their interaction. Becka’s friend Tyler finally convinces her to ask Kim out so after class she follows Kim, who disappears into a portal in the corridor.
Naturally this is a job for social media so Becka gets ready to capture this moment for internet posterity but then her phone and Becka both get sucked into the portal. It turns out that Becka’s crush has a part time job to help pay her way through uni and to fund her expensive goth clothes. Kim is … 🥁 … a reaper … of animals because she hasn’t been promoted to reaping people yet. 😊
What follows is a process of the two girls getting to know each other, visiting each other’s favourites places and a few other fairly typical getting to know you scenarios, like encountering a cat hoarding gym junkie energy drink addict hulk, zombies 🧟♀️ 🧟♂️, bed cookies, ghouls, and going to hell via the employee’s entrance.
I wasn’t quite sure what I expected from this collection. I was sucked in purely based on the wonderful cover image and its implied promise of purple tones throughout. I got the purples I was looking for along with a beautiful soft colour scheme. All of the illustrations were really sweet and I was impressed that both girls actually had curves.
The stories were interesting and the budding relationship between Becka and Kim was cute, with arguments along the way before their first kiss. Aww! 😘 While the language used came across as a bit too young for the characters, I was entertained for the entire ride. The strange occurrences in the stories took me deeper into this world instead of the jarring effect I sometimes experience. I had no problem believing anything was possible in this world and I look forward to finding out what’s next for this cute new couple.

Hmm wanted to like this but it fell pretty flat for me, both in terms of random meandering plot with no consequences for anyone's actions and superficial characters that didn't feel like real people and whose relationships felt rushed. Plus, the internet speak that everyone talks in is super annoying. Some of the art is cute but nothing to write home about. Even the queer romance couldn't save it. Too bad. ☹️

I love diversity in books and we need more of it. I'm queer and disabled. My queer goth heart thought i'd love this. I'm sorry but diversity in and of itself does not make a good book.
I couldn't stand the characters, the writing or the plot. And if I hear the word "cute" one more time, i'll scream.

This was really funny and a quick read. I really liked the premise and the execution was okay. There's not much depth to the plot or characters but that's okay for such a comic, it promised to be funny and to have a cute and diverse f/f relationship and it definitely delivered on that part.

I must admit, I’m not usually a graphic novel girl, but oh boy! This book completely changed my perspective. It was an absolute delight—cute, funny, and filled with excitement. The vibrant illustrations and dynamic storytelling drew me in from the very first page, making it a wonderfully immersive experience.
One of the standout aspects for me was the introduction of diverse characters, particularly those who aren’t heterosexual. It was refreshing and heartwarming to see representation that reflects the world we live in. It added depth to the story and made the characters feel relatable and authentic.
The premise of Kim having a part-time job as a grim reaper is nothing short of genius. It’s a clever twist that brings a unique spin to the typical coming-of-age story. Watching Kim navigate her responsibilities as a grim reaper while also dealing with the ups and downs of life made for a captivating narrative. The blend of humor with darker themes kept the tone light and engaging, making me laugh out loud at times while also reflecting on deeper issues.
The pacing was just right, keeping me hooked and eager to turn each page. I found myself invested in Kim’s journey and excited to see how her story would unfold. The cliffhanger left me craving the next installment—I can’t wait to see where the author takes us next!

Welp...this is one of those instances where I'm glad that I picked this book up through Kindle Unlimited. The cover made it look cute, but I wasn't really digging the story itself. Kim Reaper Vol. 1 follows main characters Becka and Kim who go to the same university. From the beginning, it is clear that Becka has a crush on Kim and plots to take her out on a date. When attempting to catch her after class, Becka sees Kim walk through this portal and follows behind her. She gets sucked into a random house and quickly learns that Kim works as a grim reaper. While the premise of this one was interesting, it read like a bad episode of something on Adult Swim. I was never a fan of a great portion of the shows that came on Adult Swim, so I'm not surprised that this one didn't necessarily hold my attention either. And the artwork wasn't my style. I think I understood what the author was going for, but everything from the disproportionate body parts to the extremely large eyeballs bothered me to my core. I've never really considered DNF'ing a graphic novel, but I came damn close with this one. I won't be continuing the series.

This was so goddamn cute I can't even handle it. I was giggling to myself while reading it. I couldn't get over how cute Becka is. The little hair buns! Her little tummy!! Honestly, seeing that she had a little tummy outline all the time gave me life. Plus this funny and goofy and has a cute little romance. Definitely lives up to the premise.

Kim Reaper is an adorable graphic novel about a college baker who gets swept up in her crush's drama with her job as a grim reaper. The storyline was interesting, but I did feel there was a certain something missing. Perhaps it went a little too fast for me, or maybe it just went in a strange direction. However, the graphic novel was really easy and quick to read, and for the most part, I did enjoy it - especially the parts where Becka and Kim interact and talk to one another.
All in all, Kim Reaper was a sweet and fun graphic novel, and I'm definitely be picking up the next volume.

What a wild ride, holy shit!! I was honestly in love from the very first page when our protagonist said she definitely is at uni to stare at btfl girls... I mean, talk abt relatable content!!
So yeah, this is a story abt Becka and the goth girl she has a crush on, Kim, who's a grim reaper. Totally no big deal, that happens all the time, right. They get into some hilarious & ridiculous shenanigans together, it's truly a great fun! But one of the things I loved most is that Becka is very unapologetic in her beliefs and gets to call Kim out on her bullshit one or two times. Pls, get me more bi heroines of color like that!! Cute and strong, that's my type.
The art is also real fun in this one, doesn't take itself too seriously which works out Great with a story like this one!!! A truly amazing choice.
I will definitely buy a physical copy of this & oh boy, I can't wait to see how this story further unfolds.

We are first introduced to Becka who has a MAJOR SERIOUS crush on this goth chick named Kim in her class. She follows Kim down a hallway trying to get her attention when all of a sudden, Kim walks into a portal that looks similarly to a vortex of death. Low and behold, Kim is actually a part time reaper. Whodathunk?
This was intensely hilarious and intriguing and fabulous! I really loved the art! It told an awesome story and it was lively and the expressions were perfect. I giggled quite a few times, it's just really hilarious. Who doesn't like a sassy LGBTQ+ couple??
THIS GRAPHIC NOVEL IS AN ABSOLUTE TREASURE AND I LOVE IT.

This was super cute, and the premise really drew me in. There wasn't a lot of depth to the story though. I didn't really have a connection with the characters, and I felt like the story was kind of all over the place. We were jumping from one thing to another so quickly.
It was just okay for me. I did enjoy the artwork, and I think a lot of other people will really like it though, especially if they're looking for a cute, quick read.

- This kind of read like a middle grade graphic novel even though it’s obvious they’re college aged or older
- It was kooky and ridiculous at times but that’s it’s appeal, I would say
- The romance was adorable and I hope I actually read the next volume so I can see them together after the ending 🥺

I have been eyeing this book (and well this comic) for a long time. Ever since Sarah posted bits and pieces of it, told us about it, showed the comic issues. I knew I wanted it. But I wanted to wait for the bundled volume to come out as it isn’t easy to find the issues.
This book is about Kim, but also about Becka. We see things happen from both perspectives, and I loved that. We see Becka (whom I loved instantly) and her crush on Kim. Little could that girl have expected that her kick-ass girl crush was a Grim Reaper. :P I had such a laugh when she saw Kim go through a portal, and instead of screaming, just started making pictures for internet usage.
After that the story really starts. Instantly we find out that Kim isn’t just your normal average goth, oh no. To fun her college, rent, and epic clothes she took a job as Grim Reaper. Yup. That must be the best job ever.
You won’t be able to have a breather, believe me. It will be a rollercoaster of cats, creepy Reapers (with an enormous bunch of egos), parties, skeletons, and lots of sparks flying.
Because these two girls are in lurrrrveee! I wasn’t sure at first if Kim was also in love/liked Becka (as she first seemed very put off by Becka’s kind of stalking), but that all changed when she was so sweet to go on a sort of date with Becka to show her the Grim Reaper’s powers. And especially later it got more obvious as she has to save her girl from certain doom (stupid Grim Reapers (not Kim)). The romance between was really cute, and I liked that Sarah Graley added some more extra to it by having Becka not approve of Kim’s powers. Or well, at least not the whole reaping thing. And it was also not much of a disapproval if more of a worrying thing. It is a dangerous job, and Becka would like many more dates and many more romantic events.
Becka and Kim couldn’t be more different, though Becka also shows she can kick some serious butt if the need arises (never mess with a girl who works in a bakery).
The art was fabulous, I just adore Sarah’s style of drawing.
It was just a shame that the ecopy I had didn’t have that high definition on the images. The text bubbles were clear and HD, but the rest was a bit fuzzy. Which is a shame. It is not the first time I have noticed this happening when I get a copy from Netgalley.
All in all, I could rave about this one for a long time, but I think I have said what I wanted. I will just say that I want a second book! I want more Grim Reaper adventures, more romance, more kisses! Give me more Becka and Kim!

I wasn’t sure at first if Kim was also in love/liked Becka (as she first seemed very put off by Becka’s kind of stalking), but that all changed when she was so sweet to go on a sort of date with Becka to show her the Grim Reaper’s powers. And especially later it got more obvious as she has to save her girl from certain doom (stupid Grim Reapers (not Kim)). The romance between was really cute, and I liked that Sarah Graley added some more extra to it by having Becka not approve of Kim’s powers. Or well, at least not the whole reaping thing. And it was also not much of a disapproval if more of a worrying thing. It is a dangerous job, and Becka would like many more dates and many more romantic events.
Becka and Kim couldn’t be more different, though Becka also shows she can kick some serious butt if the need arises (never mess with a girl who works in a bakery).
The art was fabulous, I just adore Sarah’s style of drawing.
It was just a shame that the ecopy I had didn’t have that high definition on the images. The text bubbles were clear and HD, but the rest was a bit fuzzy. Which is a shame. It is not the first time I have noticed this happening when I get a copy from Netgalley.
All in all, I could rave about this one for a long time, but I think I have said what I wanted. I will just say that I want a second book! I want more Grim Reaper adventures, more romance, more kisses! Give me more Becka and Kim!

The story was nice, 5.5 out of 10. The art work was very pleasing to the eye and I really liked the story and how diverse the characters were. I read a comic a while ago, also with two queer main characters, but there it felt like the author was using (for lack of a better term) their 'queerness' to try and push the story forward, rather than it carrying its own weight. This wasn't the case here, I thought the story for the most part was balanced and natural. What I didn't like however was how fast things were moving between Kim Reaper and Becka. Kim at one moment says 'I care about you and want to keep you safe.' When scroll back a day ago she didn't even know who Becka was. It felt like it took maybe 30 minutes to fall in love and another 30 to have this huge fall out between them. It really put me off at first, but after some time I got over it, and could enjoy the rest of the story.
Also, The Board of Grim Reapers was pretty cool! :)

A collection overloaded with cuteness that stars a sweet f/f romance while an underworld cast supports the main characters. The art is definitely my favorite bit because while the writing was resonating with the young adult demographic of the characters, it wasn't what stood out the most to me but the character sketches and that grim-purple color scheme really did. Will definitely look out for the next installments and will recommend this to everyone who's looking for a cute and different love story.

Kim Reaper Vol. 1: Grim Beginnings
This was a really cute LGBTQ+ graphic novel. Super easy to fly through and finish in one sitting.

Kim Reaper.
Wow, did you surprise me.
I really enjoyed this comic. It's from 2017-2018, it's set in 2018, and the 2000's fangirl/emo/goth phase zeitgeist is painted gloriously all over it. Like, imagine your super-goth subculture-inspired tween fanfiction - sparked by the likes of Evanescence and Within Temptation - got mixed up with every modern cartoon you can think of, such as 'Rick and Morty' (makes sense, since the author, Sarah Graley, did write a 'Rick and Morty' comic), 'Adventure Time', 'Star vs. the Forces of Evil', and 'Gravity Falls'; also a F/F romance that is naturally represented - uncensored, explicit - enough to make the 'The Legend of Korra' generation proud. Then you'd get the absolutely, adorably silly, cartoony, and the cutest of cutes that is 'Kim Reaper'.
Seriously, above everything else, 'Kim Reaper' is cute - the two female leads, Becka and Kim, even refer to each other as "cuties". Its horror elements, like, of course, the grim reapers, plus ghouls and zombies, are played for comedy, and it is very funny comedy. The dialogue and banter between the duo are a hoot.
The dramatic writing and character development takes place with the relationship between Becka and Kim. Both are university students studying fine art in England, and Becka, an optimistic, hyperactive, chubby POC, has a huge crush on Kim, a pale, cool, quiet goth girl. However, Kim has a secret - her part-time job is unlike any ever heard of for students. She is a Grim Reaper, tasked only in guiding the souls of animals to the afterlife. And Becka is accidentally thrust into Kim's ecstatic but dangerous world when trying to ask her out.
As a special, pleasant surprise for me, both girls do develop nicely and believably throughout this short comic volume. What appears to be a goofy cartoon on the surface does take human emotions and natural human reactions to heart.
Becka, starting off as a silly, impulsive girl with a crush who talks a lot and acts before thinking, does come to realize the dangers that Kim's life might have on her. Kim's recklessness gets Becka in terrible trouble and nearly killed, so she backs out, angry at Kim, and considers forgetting about her, because, as much fun as they have together, it's not worth the risk of death and being scared all the time now. There's a hint of PTSD. Becka, with candor, is smarter and more reasonable than she often lets on, while still exhibiting her own unique brand of humour. That's great maturity coming from a cute comedy comic called 'Kim Reaper', even though it is a temporary setback on Becka's part.
Kim starts off seemingly cold, aloof and antisocial, like a typical goth girl from the 2000s. But over the course of her grim reaping adventures with Becka, she comes out of her shell and shows how much fun she likes to have with her job. She loves her scythe, and is revealed to perhaps be even more immature and impulsive than Becka, whom she grows fond of and wishes for a closer hookup than friendship. She's probably not used to feeling like this, as a lonely goth Grim Reaper girl. She needs to be responsible and pay heed to the safety of other people now, and be less selfish.
But does Kim learn from her mistakes? Does Becka forgive her too quickly? Well, apologies are verbally expressed, and trust is earned again. From the way it is framed, the two do learn life lessons from each other, and feel safe when teaming up in the future.
Like any couple, they have their ups and downs and mood swings, as well as sweet, comforting moments of support and forgiveness. Kim's scythe allows her to open portals for them to travel anywhere in the world together; you can't get any more romantic than that! Turns out, they are just as funny as each other. They are beautiful for one another.
Kim mentions she had a girlfriend before, and Becka is implied to be bisexual. And it is all treated as completely natural. 'Kim Reaper' would make for an excellent cartoon series that kids can watch as well, if only same-sex relationships weren't still under strict censorship in terms of entertaining the younger demographic (the best gotten is vague implications and blink-and-you-miss-it teases - and, spoilers but I don't care, Becka and Kim do kiss here! - for less panty-twisting from homophones, though why anyone would want to cater to them is beyond me). It isn't that violent or "sexually-explicit" either, so no excuses, Disney or Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network!
That, my friends, is 'Kim Reaper Vol. 1: Grim Beginnings'. It's short, but oh my ghoulies what hilarious and touching fun! From the generation that brought us the Emo, for the goth, macabre kid in all of us. It's about a lesbian Grim Reaper, featuring a mixed-race F/F romance - what more, may I ask, could you ask for!?
There is a mystery concerning the Grim Reaper Board of Directors and the Underworld, as they observe Kim's true potential as a reaper, developing through her reciprocated love for the mortal Becka. Additionally, what makes the book better in my eyes is that it is British; something that I did not know before reading. Imagine, a comic like this written and drawn by a British woman!
As vibrant as a purple rose; as funny as a skeleton wearing trousers; as poignant as a gay person coming out of the closet, dusting the skeletons free of cobwebs. Did I mention the cuteness? It is as cute as it gets.

I lack the words to describe the cuteness of this book. It was such a fun entertaining read and the illustrations were totally adorable.
The story is about Kim, who is a part time grim reaper to put herself through college. And it’s about Becka, a fiercely sweet girl with a huge crush on Kim. When Becka accidentally follows Kim to work our story begins.
This book is funny, adorable and heartwearming. I enjoyed every second of it. I really loved the bits of banter between the main characters and adored Becka’s down to earth but stil larger then life oersonality. She’s the best!
I secretly hope this graphic novel somehow get’s picked up by a Dutch publisher so my fellow Dutchies can meet Becka and Kim as well 😊👌🏻👌🏻

Weird.
Maybe that’s ok?
It started out really cute, but the cat-man was…I can’t even.
I couldn’t tell what age it’s intended for. For the silliness factor, it seems like elementary school. But the story itself seems like more early YA.
I like the art.
I like the story.
I like the characters.
But the writing was weird. The pacing was off. It seemed to jump around. Almost like the author wasn’t sure where it was going and kind of wrote it on the fly. It seems like something that might have been self-published without a good editor.
There’s more to being a Grim Reaper than hooking up with babes.

This is a fun, quite ridiculous story, but I mean that in the best way possible.
I did feel it started a little slow, but picked up quickly; I believe this is because at first, I wasn't sure where the story was going to go or what the point of the opening scene was, because it was just of Becka crushing on Kim, and I hoped the whole book wouldn't be like that, because I found it boring.
Luckily, there is so much sustenance to the book than just crushes. (Not that there is anything wrong with having crushes!) It doesn't have any full out romance, but there is hints of some for later volumes.

it says "cute" more than a 13 year old fawning over a boy band. enough so it started to get nauseating. i'm also fairly certain by issue 4 they had the art budget cut or someone else was drawing it. becka always said she was "all in" and then was the first to back out, then she'd flip it around that kim was reckless. everything was repulsively superficial, tyler was the best developed of them all and got virtually no time on the page. reading this made me angry because i kept seeing glimpses of something promising, and then it was back to "cute" and shallow. it doesn't get better after issue one.
