I saw this book at JoAnn Fabrics so I checked it out from the library. It has some fun parts to it, such as reproduction pamphlets that are removable from the book. It was interesting to read the history behind Barbie in a concise way. Apparently, she was a teenage fashion model and it all really revolved around her clothing. The Barbies I grew up with were mostly from the 1980s and I don't recall ever thinking she was a teenager. When I played, it was more like a soap opera, with Ken dating the maid on the side (the maid was my Belle from Beauty and the Beast doll--maybe I was thinking of Cinderella?). There wasn't an explanation for the eye change from the shifty sideways look and closed, pouty lips to straight ahead with a pearly grin. I believe within the last year or two I went looking just for some clothes to purchase for some Barbies and Kellys I had picked up from the thrift store. No such luck. There were maybe a couple outfits for Barbie, but nothing for Kelly. Everything else was a play set or came with a Barbie.

I was excited to find this at the library. Most of the items in the pockets that you can take out and look at were - surprisingly - still there. That was fun. I guess I just wanted more pictures, more stories, more Barbie! I loved Barbie as a kid. Trying to put 50 years into one volume was just too much stuff and things that I wanted them to put in there were just missing.
Ah, memories - Malibu Barbie, Skipper (the one who grows boobs when you move her arm!), the Corvette, the house, the motor home, Ken with the painted on hair (and missing fingers, hmmm, a horrible accident in the Corvette?), all that yellow and orange! Yes, I did Barbie back when ORANGE was COOL. Then PINK became the new ORANGE. Sheesh. I only got in on the very beginning of that trend - I still can't relate Barbie to the color Pink.
This book is worth a look, but it will only leave you wanting more (if you're a fanatic. Of course, I'm not in any way a fanatic.)

Releer esta maravilla tras tantos años ha merecido la pena. Desde luego, un imprescindible para los amantes de Barbie y para los coleccionistas.

El libro es bueno, es pasta dura y la portada es muy bonita, ya que tiene las fotos de varias versiones iconicas de la muñeca.
El libro contiene varios detalles que me gustaron mucho, como una replica de la credenciasl y la carta que recibían los miembros del club de fans de Barbie en los años 60s, es muy bonito ese detalle, también contiene varias replicas de los primeros folletos/catálogos de las muñecas barbie, así como una copia de la patentes y diseños de vestuario para Barbie.
Nos describe sus orígenes, a sus Creadores, Mattel y la razón de su existencia. el como fue ganando popularidad entre las niñas y después en las personas mayores que como yo, jugamos con ellas siendo pequeñas. te mencionan algunas de la muñecas Barbie mas emblemáticas en estos 50 años de la muñeca.
Me pareció un libro muy bonito, y las imágenes son increíbles, aunque si me decepciono un poco, ya que yo pensé que contendría mas texto, es buena la información que contiene, pero yo esperaba mas, como los distintos familiares que ha tenido, a mi me toco la época de Kelly y ahora ya no existe. Me hubiera gustado leer un poco mas de eso. el libro esta bastante resumido, aunque que comprendo un poco ya que si se hablara totalmente de la historia, serian varios tomos.
El libro en si me gusto, pues Barbie me encanta, el precio original si se me hace un poco caro, dada la poca información que contiene, pero ya que yo lo compre con un gran descuento, si valió la pena. Directo a la colección Barbie.

Personalmente creo que este libro se merece la máxima puntuación, tanto por su contenido como por su presentación. Un gran repaso a toda la historia de Barbie, bien poblado de fotografías y materiales gráficos (algunos que de otra forma sería imposible ver), además de insertos que reproducen algunas publicidades de la época. Perfecto para amantes de Barbie y coleccionistas de figuras en general.

Fun book filled with little tidbits of info and things you can pull out to tell the story and evolution of Barbie! It’s not meant as a tell all definitive story of the toy but rather a scrapbook/highlight reel which is great for someone looking for quick read or just look at all the dolls/imagery but might not be for someone who wants nitty gritty details.

Not really a hugely informative or academic source for learning about the history of Barbie, but definitely a beautifully printed visual guide to Barbies various era’s, moulds, styles, and important moments. A quick fun read.

Es muy completo en cuanto a la historia de barbie desde un aspecto visual, es muy interesante ver todos los diseños y cambios que ha tenido, los diferentes trajes y todo el trabajo que tiene detrás barbie.
Me encantaria tenerlo en físico para tomarlo como referencia en algún trabajo.

I really enjoyed this book! It really was more of a scrapbook of Barbie; beautiful pictures of various Barbies during the different eras, some pamphlets, pictures of her cars, fashions, books and accessories. Liked walking down memory lane with Barbie.

Laugh it up, I read a whole book on Barbie.
It was an impulse buy as I was leaving the bookstore. I picked it up and started flipping throuhg it and couldn't put it down.
I was a huge Barbie fan as a kid and it was so fun to go through and see some of the Barbies I owned. I also found the buisness part of Barbie really interesting. This book includes a lot of pull out items (its like a pop up book for adults), such as a copy of the letter you would have recieved if you were in the Barbie Fan club in the 60s, or a copy of the original patent for the doll as well as the updated patent.
I also loved learning about the famous designers who have leant their talents to the doll's wardrobe over the years and seeing some of the collector pieces that truly are art (and sell for thousands of dollars).
It of course never dived into the controversial side of Barbie such as how some people feel it creates unrealistic expectations of beauty for girls, but I didn't actually expect that from this book.
It did talk about the doll going through social change. The first astronaut Barbie was in 1964 decades before there actually would be a real woman astronaut.
I actually felt I learned something from the book, which isn't what I planned when I picked the book. On the nostalgia level it didn't disappoint and I'm glad I own the book - although I probably am not going to be proudly displaying it in the living room.

Well! when I saw the word Barbie printed in big, bold, pink letters in that timeless font on this book, I didnt hesitate to pick it up and have a scan through, it felt as though my heart skipped a beat when I saw all the dolls i used to beg for and play with as a young child in those very pages.
Without having to think twice I thought to myself, if I let this go am I going to get the opportunity to celebrate Barbies 50th birthday with a book like this again? So I had to buy it there and then.
When reading through it I learnt alot more than I thought about what I thought was just a poxy plastic doll! Which goes to show, you learn something new everyday!
The book is also good as reference for me as I currently study textile design in college... my new favourite fashion designer? Along side many other top designers my new fav' is Bob Mackey thanks to this book. I recommend this book to any girl who longed to be just like Barbie as a young girl just like i did.

What makes this really special is all the take-out goodies: reproductions of vintage catalogues, fan club measurement cards, promotional material... Really fun.
