We live hectic lives in a chaotic world. All this can lead to a confusion that fogs the mind, unsettles the soul, and leads to poor decisions. Amidst such chaos and confusion, we long to hear God's voice with greater clarity. God wants to put things in order. He wants to rearrange our priorities. If we let him, we will be happier than we ever thought possible in this lifetime, and finally, then we will come to know the peace for which we all yearn, but so few of us ever find. Our Catholic spirituality is constantly inviting us to establish the deep roots of order in our lives, and one of the best ways I know to do that is by praying the Rosary. The Rosary works. It's a very powerful way to pray. There is just something about it that settles our hearts and minds. It puts everything in perspective and allows us to see things as they really are. It reaches deep down into our souls and puts us at ease, creating a peace that is rare and beautiful. When I pray the Rosary, I am a better person. It makes me a better son, brother, husband, father, employer, neighbor, citizen, and member of the human family. It teaches me to slow down, calm down, let go, surrender, and listen. The Rosary teaches me how to simply be, and that is not a small or insignificant lesson. It is the perfect prayer for busy people in a busy, noisy, confused world. But don't take my word for it. Try it for yourself. Develop a habit of praying the Rosary, and discover the treasures of this powerful, ancient prayer.
Matthew Kelly is a best-selling author, speaker, thought leader, entrepreneur, consultant, spiritual leader, and innovator.
He has dedicated his life to helping people and organizations become the-best-version-of-themselves. Born in Sydney, Australia, he began speaking and writing in his late teens while he was attending business school. Since that time, 5 million people have attended his seminars and presentations in more than 50 countries.
Today, Kelly is an internationally acclaimed speaker, author, and business consultant. His books have been published in more than 30 languages, have appeared on The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestseller lists, and have sold more than 50 million copies.
In his early-twenties he developed "the-best-version-of-yourself" concept and has been sharing it in every arena of life for more than twenty-five years. It is quoted by presidents and celebrities, athletes and their coaches, business leaders and innovators, though perhaps it is never more powerfully quoted than when a mother or father asks a child, "Will that help you become the-best-version-of-yourself?"
Kelly's personal interests include golf, music, art, literature, investing, spirituality, and spending time with his wife, Meggie, and their children Walter, Isabel, Harry, Ralph, and Simon.
In the last two years I have read 14 books by Matthew Kelly. And I have found that all of them have helped me grow in my faith. From reading 'Why Am I Here?' with my children, many times over to just finishing this read and devouring it in 4 sittings over 2 days. It all Started with 'Rediscover Advent' back in 2015, and now in the fall of 2017 I am reading 'Rediscover the Rosary' and absolutely loved it. There are a number of books currently available in the Rediscover series, it Started with 'Rediscover Catholicism' and this books mentions another forthcoming volume 'Rediscover the Saints'. The books in this series are:
Rediscover Catholicism Rediscover Advent Rediscover Lent Rediscover Jesus Rediscover the Rosary Rediscover the Saints
And to be honest this book was so good I look to see if I could find a release date for the Saints book, and went back and bumped 'Rediscover Catholicism' up to the top of my to be read list. But back to this specific book. The sections in this book are:
Prologue Part One 1. My Journey with the Rosary 2. A Unique Perspective 3. Praying with Beads 4. Dynamic Prayer Part Two 5. The Joyful Mysteries 6. The Luminous Mysteries 7. The Sorrowful Mysteries 8. The Glorious Mysteries Part Three 9. A Scriptural Rosary Part Four 10. Every Family Needs a Prayerful Giant 11. Beautifully Aware Appendices The Basics: How to Pray the Rosary Quotes, Prayers, and Hymns About Mary and the Rosary Marian Feast Days
Kelly in the first chapter mentions that the first book he wrote was 'Prayer & the Rosary' and he intended to sit down and rewrite it many times. For Matthew first wrote and published it when he was just 18 years old. But Many times he came back to reworking that book. And it often fell to the side. But this is finally the book he wanted it to be.
Now you might ask why another book on the Rosary? A quick search on Good reads returns over 1100 results, Kindle almost 600, and books on Amazon returns over 4000 titles. And I have read 3 books on the rosary this year almost a dozen over the last 10 year. And I have two others I plan on reading that have been sitting in my 'to be read pile'. So why would I read another one? Well To start with everything I have read by Matthew Kelly has been excellent, he writes in such an engaging and succinct style. I find that when I read his books I often feel like he was writing directly to me. It was the same with this book. I have been praying the rosary almost every day for a few years now. And I feel this statement by Matthew is bang on:
"Prayer makes me a better person. It makes me a better friend, a better father, a better husband, a better son and brother, a better employer and leader, a better citizen of this country, and a better member of the human family. Prayer makes me a-better-version-of-myself."
And on why he prays the Rosary:
"It just works. When I pray the Rosary, I am a better person. It makes me a better son, brother, husband, father, employer, neighbor, citizen, and a better member of the human family. It brings an incredible peace; it teaches us to slow down, calm down, let go, surrender, and listen. The Rosary teaches us how to just be, and that is not a small or insignificant lesson. In some ways it is the perfect prayer for busy people in a busy, noisy, confused world."
And those two quotes sum up why we pray and why we pray the Rosary! I also really appreciated this statement:
"I don't know how often you should pray the Rosary. There are some people who think everyone should pray the Rosary every day. In my own life, there have been months, even years, when I have prayed the Rosary every day. At other times, I have gone weeks and months without praying it. Generally I have discovered that when I make time for this simple but profound practice of prayer, I am a better person. When I have the discipline to pray the Rosary regularly, I seem to have a certain calmness and a heightened awareness, which makes me more readily disposed to living a life of virtue."
Kelly does not present a formula, but he speaks from his own experience and the benefits from praying it more often. The book also focuses some on prayer life in general and the Rosary being a great tool for prayer. There are three appendices, the first is the predictable How To Pray The Rosary. The second is a series of quotes about the Rosary, and a collection or prayers to Mary. And the Final is a selection of Marian Feasts.
This book was an excellent read. Before I had finished it I had already purchased another from Kelly to start next. I know that I will also likely reread this book again in a few months. And I can think of dozens of people I would love to hand this book to. This is another great read by Matthew Kelly, and I know reading and applying the advice in it, will help transform your prayer life, your life, and help you become the best version of yourself!

Great book regardless of if you regularly pray the rosary or have never picked one up! Many options and things to think about throughout this book. This will be a book you keep on hand and check back with regularly.
It is always good to understand the prayers you recite and it is equally important to receive positive inspiration as was written in, "Rediscover the Rosary: The modern power of an ancient prayer." The prayers in the back of the book are priceless and the style Mathew Kelly uses is truly angelic in form and presentation. I really like the feelings his books reveals to my soul. Comfort, trusting, and true goodness. There is hope in his message to all of us, and god speaks passionately with him with great voice.
I've prayed the rosary off and on for years. This book has deepened its meaning for me. Kelly never fails to challenge and instruct, never disappoints. Though I've finished the book, it will remain at my side on an on-going basis. This form of prayer has become, for me, what mindfulness meditation is to Buddhists...an effective remedy for "monkey mind," and entry into the Gospel mysteries of my own faith. Highly recommended.
I've been praying the Rosary since a young child but seem to appreciate and need it more now than in the past. This book was a Christmas gift from my son and five into it immediately, absorbing each word written by Matthew Kelly. I recommend it to all for the renewal of this beautiful prayer of Our Lady.
Matthew Kelly explains about the Rosary Prayer. It contains lots of practical information on the prayer. You might need to take notes in order to be able to pray the Rosary without having to consult the book or internet. Unfortunately Kelly does not explain so much about the relation between Rosary and Prayer Process in your prayer life. It is open to interpretation and experiment.
Matthew Kelly is an inspiration. I love how he compares reciting the rosary as a type of mediation for him. It provide a single focus and way to get rid of all the clutter in your brain to focus on one thing; praying.
I noticed that while reading this book that I was able to pause and meditate on each chapter I read, especially when reading about the different mysteries-I have recently (November 2019) started going to Adoration 1x a week and say the Rosary.
I have not been a fan of Matthew Kelly's other books, but this one was fantastic! I highlighted so much and have been going back to reference it since I finished it. I found this so valuable and it really deepened my prayer life and gave me suggestions for meditation during the rosary.
This book was a very slow read for the first 50 pages or so; however, when Kelly got into the crux of the meaning of the rosary, it was extremely simplistic and easy to follow. This is a must-read for all newly converted Catholics (as well as other Christians who utilize the rosary).
Very very good book. Third Matthew Kelly book I’ve read recently. I love the ease and clarity that he writes with. Does a great job of explaining and describing without overdoing either. Will definitely continue to read more of his stuff.
This is a great book to keep with you and study from. I take it with me when I go to Adoration and pray the different prayer practices he describes. It’s an easy read. I’d recommend it!
Every once in awhile I feel like I am reading a book that Our Lady wrote to me. For most of the book, that is how I felt. Mary, My Mother was speaking to me.
Definitely includes some helpful tips and framework but overall this authors style is “this could have been a blog post, not a book.” 🤷♀️ Not bad, just not great.
This was a very enlightening book to read as someone who did not grow up saying the Rosary. It really explains the Rosary and its origins as well as how Catholics view Mary as the mother of Jesus.
"The world has its own gospel. The message of the world is incomplete, and nothing demonstrates this incompleteness more than the world's inability to make sense of suffering. The world cannot make sense of suffering because it views suffering as worthless. The world has no answer for the inescapable, unavoidable, and inevitable suffering of our lives." (p. 128, hardcover)
Does that ring a bell today? It does for an American living in America reading about the news of the extensive opioid addiction, prevalence of mindless celebrity-worshipping, finger-pointing in the highest echelons of office, and incessant subpar entertainment being spewed out in the hopes of curing people's depression.
Matthew Kelly has a gift for writing simply but forcefully. His message of the power of simplicity in today's complex world will forever change how you view the practice of Rosary-praying. If there was any one book that returned me_a once near hopeless, nearing emotional abyss, confused and angry Catholic_to my Catholic faith, this is the book that did it.
We were at our lowest and in need of a a miracle for a desperate situation - with nowhere else to turn the ROSARY and my grandfathers constant advice to us as kids came to mind: “Pray to Mary”! But how to pray to her after such a long time. This author, this book not only provided us the guidance, but hope while we doubted and bolstered our faith that “ prayer works”, especially this prayer! It reminded me of Jesus’ promise that “ Gods will shall prevail on earth as it is in heaven” - and that if God is for us, who can be against us - that “everything”is impossible! All glory, all praise to G-d! This book made me thankful to Mary for her magnificent and powerful path to God via her Rosary. and helped bring into perspective her kindness and love by reminding that it was she, who provided such a powerful path to God, her help in our times of need and a reliable and true way to salvation.
Thanks for reminding me of the Spiritual Blessings
This book has renewed my desire to better my prayer life, and what better way to begin that than with the rosary. Thank you Matthew Kelley for inspiring me so well to desire the spiritual blessings of the rosary
