Gerard Reve was een Nederlands schrijver en dichter. Samen met Harry Mulisch en W.F. Hermans wordt hij gerekend tot De Grote Drie: de drie belangrijkste Nederlandse schrijvers van na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Tot zijn bekendste werken behoren De avonden (roman uit 1947) en Werther Nieland (novelle uit 1949). Tot 1973 schreef Reve onder zijn oorspronkelijke naam Gerard Kornelis van het Reve, maar vereenvoudigde deze later tot Gerard Reve. Hij debuteerde in 1946 in het tijdschrift Criterium met de novelle De ondergang van de familie Boslowits, een jaar later verscheen de klassieker De avonden. Reve zou uiteindelijk een enorm oeuvre voortbrengen, waaronder een groot aantal ‘brievenboeken’. In 1969 ontving Reve de P.C. Hooftprijs en in 2001 werd zijn werk bekroond met de Prijs der Nederlandse Letteren. Zijn werk wordt tot op heden nog altijd veel gelezen en besproken.

Bij deze wil ik mij erkentelijk verklaren aan Joopie die mij op deze gewezen heeft. Geweldig hoe de personages alles bij elkaar liegen. Ik vond vooral Darger en George goed. Ook George's oom John heeft een kleine maar glansrijke rol met zijn reacties op de moeder van George. Het verhaal met Darger vond ik goed, omdat het mooi laat zien hoe fantasierijk je kan zijn als jongetje en hoe verhalen in je hoofd een hele andere draai en betekenis krijgen op zo'n leeftijd. Bij George vond ik het goed dat het zo'n klootzak is en dat hij dat uit richting jonge jongens waardoor het een extra narigheid eraan meegeeft.

blij dat ik dit boek heb gekierd want ik vond dit hilarisch. blij dat ik dan eindelijk met reve begonnen ben en het was het dubbel en dwars waard. henk en darger waren fenomenale personages.

Grappige ventjes

Dit is ook weer zo'n boek van Reve waar je wel voor in de stemming moet zijn, want anders zal je snel afhaken.
De vier lange verhalen in deze bundel staan bol van de triestigheid, maar toch wel op een komische manier. Maar dat zijn we natuurlijk wel gewend van Reve. Schitterend hoe hij zijn hoofdpersonen - vaak jonge mannen, jongetjes ook - de meest fantastische gedachten door het hoofd laat gaan. Personages die geheel in een eigen wereld leven, zoals met name kinderen dat natuurlijk ook vaak kunnen.
En dat alles uiteraard weergaloos opgeschreven. Ja, je moet er van houden maar de beloning is er dan op vrijwel elke pagina.

Dit boek van Gerard Reve liet me eerder achter met gemengde gevoelens. De vier verhalen zijn bizar en bevolkt door figuren die lijden onder allerlei psychische en fysieke gebreken. Hoewel de stijl soms scherp en ironisch is, miste ik inspiratie of warmte. Voor mij bleef vooral de bevreemding hangen.

I have an infinite fascination for Gerard Reve perhaps because the novel of his that I want to read 'Nearer to Thee', were the main character fantasises about having sex with God after his descent to earth in the form of a donkey, has never been translated. Instead I try and track down whatever of his is available in English which includes this curiosity, a collection of stories and a short novella written in English by Reve when he was attempting to reach a wider audience than he would in his native Dutch. It was an interesting experiment but one he did not pursue for very long. I have no idea if these stories have been translated back into Dutch or if they are simply a failed experiment largely unknown to both English and Dutch readers.

I like them, the connection with his earlier novellas 'Werther Nieland' and 'The Fall of the Boslowits Family' is easy to see. There are also clear relationships with his famous novel 'The Evenings'. There is the same immediate post-war setting and atmosphere.

I love Reve but have to admit that although he may be one of the giants of post war Netherlands and European literature he is not, in translation, as accessible as Wilhelm Hermans or Harry Mulisch, the only novel of his, aside from 'The Evenings' available in English is 'Parents Worry' and while it is extraordinary it is not easy to really love and admire.

This collection is for Reve fanatics, it is only available second hand and though not ridiculously expensive (I paid £50 for a very nice edition with dust jacket) I could not honestly recommend anyone to spend that much money to acquire the book. It has been said that because Reve wrote frankly about homosexuality he was not translated like Hermans or Mulisch. There may have been some truth in this in the 1960's but I don't think that is the true reason so little of Reve is available in English. That his style is hard to translate is no doubt true but I have a suspicion that Reve, though a good writer at times, produced a great deal of second rate stuff which had shock value but little real literary merit. Once writing explicitly about homosexual acts ceased to be shocking or controversial Reve lost his unique selling point.
