AKA Wray Delaney

Sally Gardner grew up and still lives in London. Being dyslexic, she did not learn to read or write until she was fourteen and had been thrown out of several schools, labeled unteachable, and sent to a school for maladjusted children. Despite this, she gained a degree with highest honors at a leading London art college, followed by a scholarship to a theater school, and then went on to become a very successful costume designer, working on some notable productions.

After the births of twin daughters and a son, she started first to illustrate and then to write picture books and chapter books, usually with fairytale- or otherwise magical subject matter. She has been called 'an idiosyncratic genius' by London’s Sunday Times.

This brings me very good memories. I was just 7 or 8 years old when I read this. I think I was the only one who read the books in our 'classroom library' but gosh I enjoyed it a lot while my pals where just screaming or doing I-don't-know-what.
If you have kids they should read this very pretty book (:

So the whole respectable family needing to be respectable, etc thing made me think of Hobbits, so I basically pictured the family as Hobbits and the Fat Fairy as Gandalf, and it became the most enjoyable experience I've had in awhile.

What a delightful magical little book! A story about a boy asking for a wish from a silly-looking fairy has somehow turned into a reflection of the costs of adulthood and responsibilities with the most gentle reminder to indulge in the joy life has to offer. The book kids and even more so adults should pick up when life gets too loud.

This book made me cry a little..because it mixes in the very real world of adults seen through the eyes of a young child. Also, about saving a family's relationship.
