Chris Honeysett #5

Worthless Remains

Rate this book
Chris Honeysett’s latest assignment – babysitting TV archaeologist Guy Middleton during filming at an aging rock star’s mansion near Bath – seems straightforward enough. It turns out to be anything but. While his brief is to protect Guy from over-eager fans, when the TV presenter starts to receive threatening letters and spiked drinks, Honeysett realizes that there’s a lot more to this job than he’d been led to believe. As the menacing incidents escalate in intensity, it becomes clear that someone intends Guy Middleton serious harm. With his highhanded ways and less-than-professional attitude, the presenter has annoyed a lot of people. But who would hate him enough to try to kill him?

Meanwhile the archaeological dig unearths some unexpected it’s not only Roman remains that are buried in the mansion’s grounds …

Cute. An artist does occasional PI work on the side to pay the bills. He's pretty lazy and not particularly good at it, but gets there in the end. He gets hired for two gigs at the same time. Lies to his employer that he's actively on top of one gig while actually hanging out at the estate of an aging rock star while the Time Lines TV series (a copy cat of the actual Timeline TV series) does an archaeological dig on the estate. The MC for the series is a drunken has-been who is getting death threats, and our protagonist is supposed to protect him (which he does half-heartedly and badly). But all ends well, of course.

I quite like this series...and am hoping the author keeps writing a few more books before he moves on and leaves Chris Honeysett in favour of his other series character.

Chris is once again on a crime adventure...this time to "babysit" Guy Middleton, star of an archaeology television show. What should be a simple case, turns deadly.

Returning characters make their appearance. And there is lots of talk about coffee, which is always a bonus for me, in any book.

Chris Honeysett combines vocations--he's an artist, a private detective, and a foodie. He's hired to protect the presenter of an archaeology show on location near his Bath home, but soon finds himself as a full-time bodyguard and sleuth, staying in the stately home of a one-time rock star, where the dig is taking place.

Fifth in the Chris Honeysett series, another entertaining romp starring the private investigator/painter and foodie this time solving an intriguing case at an archaeological dig which is also a television show set in the country estate of a retired rock star.

I thought this was quite a good book. I did not find the narrator particularly sympathetic despite which I was happy to follow him as he went on his way. Again I felt the ending might have been rushed, with a few loose ends dangling in the breeze, but not enough to be a serious defect.

Read an advance copy of this book. Chris Honeysett continues to find himself in challenging circumstances but manages to solve the mystery and make me smile.

First half is slow enough I considered not continuing. However, it picks up speed and interest. after it ends i wondered if i needed to go back and see if there were hints that led to the conclusion.

Not the first in the series, but they do not need to be read in order. However, I am interested enough to go find the first one to see how the series began.
