Your Move is a lively romantic comedy, charting the blossoming friendship between modern heroines Gemma and Pandora, as well as the amorous entanglements that criss-cross both of their lives.
Silvia Forrester writes novels and short stories, has an MA in creative writing and teaches at the Open University. She lives in Kent with her husband; they have four grown-up daughters and three granddaughters. Silvia enjoys writing contemporary fiction exploring love, friendship and family.
Your Move is such a charming Romantic Comedy about two very different women in two very different career paths. Each looking for love in different places.
Gemma works with Dorothy at Hot Properties Estate Agents. She isn't necessarily looking for love, until in walks laid back Marcus! Marcus is a photographer and Gemma hires him to help take picture of their listings. Marcus and Gemma have an instant connection.
I really liked Gemma she was charming, warm, friendly, down to earth and passionate and desperate to make it onto the property ladder.
Then we meet Pan (Pansy) who is in her 30s and lives at home with her mum still. I didn't particularly like Pan she is very vain, obsessed with looks and money, uses her looks to gain freebies from men such as free cab rides etc.. Ok so she may not expect them too pay but she takes and in turn kind of gives the men false pretences. Pan also has a secret.... she is 27 thousand pound in debt due to her addiction to looking good.
Pan joins millionaire dating agencies as she's looking for a man to help pay for her habit. Yet so far things are not quiet going according to plan with disastrous dates.
The story is told by Gemma and Pan which was really lovely as there paths do cross.
I thoroughly enjoyed this gorgeous book. It was a nice paced read that easily passed the time away as I was swept along with Gemma & Pan's lives.
If you are looking for a enchanting and charming read with disastrous mishaps, gorgeous properties, quirky characters, love and friendship, plenty of humour then this is Definetly the book for you.
Thank you to Brook Cottage for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
My Review is also on my blog website & a Fab book Giveaway:
Let me just get this bit out of the way first - I wasn't overly enamoured with the first part of the book. For me the storyline came across a little stilted and even though the characters were very promising, I did feel like they weren't showcasing their full personalities.
However, after the half way mark something just clicked. Gone was the stilted storyline, and gone where the characters who were hiding. Instead there was a storyline which made me laugh, had characters which oozed reliability, with an overall vibe of cosiness and modern day kick-bumming. I was so glad that I was able to watch the book reach its full potential as it had the bare bones there, that was what frustrated me to begin with!
Luckily that did change, and I found myself showing a bit of empathy towards Pandora (eventually), even though she wasn't my most favourite character that's for sure! The whole debacle with Humphrey's house had me in hysterics - good on him!!! Even though I disliked Pandora at first, her situation is incredibly relatable and, if you take away the millionaire intentions, I am sure a lot of readers will be relieved to know that you can actually get out of a situation just like Pandora's, just as long as you actually do it. Her heart was in the right place and I cannot fault her for that.
Overall 'Your Move' ended up being such a light-hearted, laugh out loud, modern read with elements of darkness and surprise floating in-between. This book has a character for everyone, with situations a lot of readers will be sitting there nodding at.
I am so glad that I persevered with this book as it turned out to be such a memorable and hug worthy read that I can honestly recommend.
Your Move by Silvia Forrester is the first book I've read by the author and I'm totally hooked by her writing style. The book follows two young women..............Gemma and Pan. Both women don't initially know one another and both lead very different lives. Gemma is happy being little miss average while Pan strives for nothing less than total perfection looks wise. Gemma is quite happy blending into the background and Pan adores the attention her supermodel looks get her. The two are complete polar opposites so its a surprise when their paths cross and lives change.
Gemma is thrilled with her job in a new estate agents. She adores finding people their dream homes. She can just about tolerate her completely bonkers boss Dorothy with her eccentric ways and completely insane dress sense. Working for Hot Properties with a rival estate agency next door is actually Gemma's idea of a dream job even though she doesn't have enough money to get on the property ladder herself. New photographer Marcus with his less than conventional looks soon leaves Gemma wondering if there could be more to their relationship than a working one. But, his life is complicated and he has suffered real loss. Throw into the mix a wonderful and very wealthy elderly gentleman who wants Gemma to sell his very grand house and a mysterious buyer who Gemma senses isn't all he says he is and her life becomes a whole lot more complicated.
Pan or Pansy as is her real name works in a beauty spa / cosmetic clinic called Perfect 10. Her stunning good looks make her a poster girl for the establishment. Pan loves nothing more than to shop. Unfortunately, her credit card bills and what she can actually afford to spend are at odds. ( I know how she feels!). Things soon come to a head when Pan is being hounded by debt collectors and she soon realises she needs to gain back some control. If only she could find a nice millionaire. So, she joins an exclusive dating agency but that doesn't all go according to plan.
When Gemma's boss decides to rebrand the business she also decides that Gemma needs a bit of rebranding herself and buys her a voucher for Perfect 10. She and Pan instantly hit it off and Pan helps her create a new look. Little do they know just how many ways their lives would parallel one another.
Silvia Forrester has managed to create two main characters that develop and change throughout the course of the book. Their very different personalities and their outlooks on life are forced to change because of their circumstances and each must confront the things they don't like about themselves. I loved them both and yes at times they could be frustrating but that's what real life is like. A variety of themes are explored throughout the course of the book. The humour in the book provides a good balance to the more serious issues.
The secondary characters, and I hate calling them that because they add so much to this book are absolutely brilliant. They are funny, sad and sometimes not very nice. There really is such an interesting and eclectic mix of characters. Your Move is definitely right up there on my highly recommended books list. I simply couldn't put it down.
This review was originally posted on Star Crossed Reviews I received this book for free for a Blog Tour in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Thank you to JB for letting me take part in this tour. I was grabbed by the cover of this book its bright and inviting. I then went on to read the blurb which sounded like something I would really enjoy.
The book follows Gemma and Pan as they both struggle through their life and fall in love.
Gemma works at an estate agents. She is very passionate about helping people find the right home for them. Her childhood saw her moving from pillar to post and she would love nothing more than a place of her own. Gemma is rather guarded with her heart and doesn't want to end up like her mum. I really liked Gemma. She was down to earth, she was funny and given her past she was also very strong.
Marcus joins Hot Properties as their photographer. At first he seems a bit like he lives in the moment and doesn't exactly plan for tomorrow but the more I got to know Marcus the more I really liked him. He has had a family tragedy and this has made him step up to the plate. Marcus needed to be strong for his family and he did exactly that. Marcus acts like an idiot at times and I really wanted to bash Gemma and Marcus' heads together at some points as it was obvious they liked each other and both were too scared to say anything.
I really disliked Pan at first. I couldn't understand her need to have so much stuff especially considering her situation. I've never been one for big brands and paying over the odds for things so I really struggled to understand her character. As her story progressed there were some aspects of her that I liked. She obviously cared about her friends and family and she really helps Gemma out too. Once you move past the superficial aspect Pan is quite a sweetie.
There were some parts of this book towards the end that I thought were a little far fetched but it didn't ruin the story for me.
Pans mum Rose was one of my favourite side characters as was Humphrey Littlejohn. Rose just wants the best for her daughter and she'll do whatever she can to help her. Humphrey is just a lonely man. He has all this money and no one to share it with. He is a man who worked hard and was rewarded greatly in some areas but not so much in the romance department.
The story was well written. It had good pace and I could relate to a lot of Gemma's part of the story. I think my lack of relatability to Pan is a personal thing. Her character is well written and I know of people like Pan I just struggle to understand her.
If you are looking for a light romance that will have you giggling then this is one for you.
I was given an ecopy of this book by JB at Brook Cottage Books in exchange for an honest review as part of the blog tour. This is something I'm more than happy to do.
I was initially drawn to this book by the lovely cover, on a dingy, grey day it looked like just the thing I needed to read, it hinted of spring and made me smile.
Your move is told by two characters estate agent Gemma and beauty therapist/receptionist Pan. On the surface they couldn't be more different. Gemma wants to blend into the background and isn't comfortable under the beauty spotlight and Pan who loves showing off every aspect of her perfectly buffed, polished, plumped body. She lives for a treatment. You could say she's addicted to them.
The girls meet when Gemma is sent to Perfect 10 for a make over by her boss in preparation for a publicity campaign aimed at attracting high end clients. Both are looking to the next phase in their lives - Gemma wants to settle down and own her own home, she comes across as homely, honest, sweet and reliable. Whereas Pan is bold, brash and has her designs on finding herself a millionaire boyfriend to settle her not insubstantial debts and keep her in the manner she's been living which is way outside her budget. She's not adverse to bending / twisting the truth to get there.
Your Move is fun and light-hearted, it has the right mix of 'feel good', romance, drama and humour. Allowing you to laugh and cringe in all the right places.
It is a beautiful story about love, friendship, family and discovering what is important in life, as the book progressed more of the 'real' characteristics were revealed. Gemma and Pan each discovering in different ways that to find true happiness, you have to be happy in yourself first - and sometimes you have to take a leap of faith, sometimes you have to lead with your heart and put your trust and happiness in the hands of someone else.
Thank you Silvia Forrester for creating delightful characters that appeared as vivid pictures in my mind, because of this I was fully engaged from the beginning - quietly mouthing my thoughts and advice to 'the girls' throughout - I thoroughly enjoyed this slice of escapism into the worlds of two very different characters.
This book grew on me. I wasn’t sure I liked the character of Pan too much at first, but in fact as the book went on I came to really enjoy the way both characters developed. It wasn’t much of a rom com for the bulk of the story, but both Pan and Gemma were fresh and interesting, and I liked the way the story established a connection and friendship between them. Gemma in particular had a life and goals that didn’t revolve solely around a man. The romances were very sweet although Pan’s was explored less than Gemma’s. The secondary characters were interesting and didn’t feel like bolt-ons. I did feel that the book was perhaps a tad over-long, and I spotted several typos in the version I read, so the editing could have been a bit stronger for my taste. Nevertheless, it carried me along and I enjoyed the gentle humour and the themes of family, self-discovery and self-development in the book. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review, but will happily read more of this author’s work in the future.
Gemma is a budding real estate agent with great aspirations to own a home, something nearly impossible living so close to London so she is determined to make a success of it and prove to her new boss that she was worth hiring, even though she hadn't passed her driving test yet. When man boy Marcus starts in the office as a new photographer with his long hair, facial piercings and laid back air, Gemma has no time for him. Her goals are set and they certainly don't include anyone like him.
Beautiful Pandora, with her high maintenance regime has her own goals and the top one is to marry a rich man so that her huge burden of debt can disappear and her life will be free of worry. But her job as an assistant at a beauty salon and spa leave her little opportunity to meet anyone. When her financial matters come to a crisis point she resorts to desperate tactics and tries dating apps.
Both Pandora discover that appearances and goals can shift and take on new meaning in this light and enjoyable romance that strikes a warmhearted tone throughout.
Your Move is a Romantic Comedy. With a passion for people and property, nothing gives newbie estate agent Gemma Cole more pleasure than matching buyers with their ideal homes. After a nomadic childhood with her ditzy mum, Gemma longs for nothing more than a place she can call her own. When Marcus, the new photographer, arrives at the estate agency, he's the epitome of laidback, festival chic. Sexy, laidback, festival chic. But Gemma dismisses him as another commitment-phobic, eternal student, just like her ex. Pandora works at Perfect 10, a premier beauty and cosmetic clinic. She is always effortlessly glamorous – with model-looks, bucketloads of confidence, and bulging designer wardrobes – she appears to have it all. Gemma and Pan's characters are well contrasted. Silvia Forrester has created delightful characters that kept me engaged from the beginning, and her research into estate agency and the beauty industry certainly pays off. Your Move is fun and light-hearted; it has the right mix of happiness, passion, drama and joy. I recommend this feel-good read to all.
This was a really good read and a slightly unusual one.
Gemma is an ordinary girl who is working very hard at a real-estate agents and trying to save for a house deposit. She works with Dorothy, who has forgotten that the 80's are over, and her fashion choices gave me many chuckles throughout this book. Particularly because I remember the 80's very well myself and my own choices were dodgy - in retrospect, of course!
Pandora is a beautiful girl with a lot of confidence. She seems to have it all but she is struggling and still living with her mum.
The tale of these two women (and the loved ones who surround them) was the basis of this book and even though they appeared to have nothing in common, their paths crossed or nearly crossed, quite often.
I think the author did a really good job of skilfully weaving the different threads of the story together. I liked both of the main characters but I also liked their respective mothers and this was definately a modern tale which a lot of readers would be able to relate to.
Your Move follows two single women trying to get their lives on track. Gemma is in her late twenties, working as an estate agent and harbouring dreams of owning her own house and Pan is thirty three, drop dead gorgeous and a complete spendaholic with a need to get her debts sorted out.
To begin with I didn’t warm to Pan’s character at all, she was selfish and a bit of a cow. I didn’t like her motivations or her actions.
Gemma on the other hand was likeable and just not very lucky in love, thinking of herself as Little Miss Average.
As the story went on I enjoyed the style of writing and the alternating storylines that intertwined. It kept the pace going and was an enjoyable read. I even started to like Pan after a while. I would definitely recommend this to my friends, it is a realistic account of what a lot of women go through trying to deal with the expectations they think people have of them.
I loved this book! It was an interesting tale of two different women; Gemma and Pandora (Pan). Gemma is a newly trained estate agent with a phobia of learning to drive. Pan is living above her means as appearance is everything, even if you have to go into debt to look good. Pan decides that the way to solve all her problems is to find a millionaire man and the dating part is hilarious!
Gemma meets new photographer Marcus and after time, develops a friendship with him. Old ex boyfriend Dan thinks he is still in with a chance with Gemma.
A great storyline with funny bits and two main characters that you can engage with.
This book has the potential to be great, but really needs some serious editing. Saying someone wore a white skort instead of skirt, and using the word 'scrummy' for delicious food really grates.
I did enjoy the middle of the story, and the characterisations of the different people, but the storyline was really spoilt by the ending which was implausible to say the least. Nothing in life is wrapped up quite in the way it happens in this book, and it therefore becomes annoying. With a different ending and some judicious editing this could be an excellent novel.
This turned out to be a lovely read. I found the story slow to begin with and couldn’t really be drawn to the character of Pan, in the beginning she irritated me a little. As the story progressed a started to like her a little more. I was surprised by the ending of her story as she appeared to take a whole new turn in her life, which I found a little unbelievable as she seemed to have a whole new perception on life. I loved the characters of Gemma and Marcus, and enjoyed seeing their story develop. A lovely lighthearted story.
I loved this book. The characters were relatable, likeable and deep and the plot was engaging, with plenty of substance. I particularly enjoyed the way the individual stories of Gemma and Pan were woven together as the book progressed. Silvia Forrester has a lovely, easy-to-read writing style and a great sense of humour- I had several laugh-out-loud-on-the-tube moments!
Your move is a light romantic feel good read, perfect for a lazy few days in the sun. The humour is at times a little twee and I found the plot somewhat contrived in places. The tale of synthetic Pan and down to earth Gemma has a moralistic undertone on subjects like debt and the importance (or otherwise) of appearances, but this is-thankfully-undertaken with a light hand. Overall, I enjoyed the read despite the convenient and predictable ending. 3&1/2 stars rounded up to 4
Gemma's passion for selling houses comes across well. Pan's desperation for a rich man to solve all her credit card woes provides a good balance, and between the two of them, they eventually figure the way forward. This book was really enjoyable, undemanding but still thought-provoking. An ideal holiday read, or for any time you just want to chill out with a couple of fun women who manage to take control of their lives and their problems and find their own happy ending.
Pan and Gemma story is an enjoyable one. Abit of a slow starter and not a typical rim con Pan and Gemma are both reflective of many woman in society. Pan spending beyond her means to strive for perfection and what society judges as perfection, whilst Gemma's goal is to own something that is hers. Her own house. There stories interwine is a natural way and there isn't a handsome man that eventually saves them but their own determination to achieve what they thought they wanted
Of all the characters Humphrey is my favourite- I can so easily picture him with his devil may care attitude, classy but slightly dishevelled appearance and twinkly eyes! This is a good read, plenty going on in the two seperate lives of Gemma and Pandora, with chance overlaps that lead to true friendships, some laugh out lound moments and a general feeling of wellbeing as you close the final page.
A pleasant read about 2 women who are polar opposites, looking for love in very different ways. Although the story started a little slow for me, it soon picked up pace and the interesting mix of characters and a good balance of humour and rom-com, make it a ideal book to relax with.
Thank you to the author and TBC Reviewer Request Group for the ARC.
Really enjoyable book. Liked how long the book was, you could really get to know the characters. Able to relate to both main characters and their difficulties with life and love. Characters had good energy which kept the pace of the book moving to the end. Will hopefully read more by this writer. Thank you
Loved it! Rom-com at its best. Wonderfully fun British setting, like taking a little vacation. The parallel stories of practical Gemma and glamorous (and broke) Pandora were so well-done. I highly recommend.
I was lucky enough to be chosen to read and review this...it was a absolute brilliant read from start to finish with plenty of laugh out loud moments ! The differences between Gemma and Pan were brilliant bit led to a friendship and happiness for everyone and Gemma boss sounds hilarious !
This novel had an echo to my own life having dealt in property when I was younger and the desires of the characters.. it was actually quite thought provoking .. I enjoyed it thoroughly and was a lovely read while snuggled on a Sunday afternoon in rainy Blighty . An easy cosy read 5*
For me, this book was a little hard to follow bouncing between people. I enjoyed the book but if I needed to put it down for a day or two, it took me awhile to get back into it. I did, however, enjoy the storylines.
If you like a good laugh and an intriguing story then this is the book for you. Two young women trying to sort out their individual problems and the way their journey makes them grow in the process makes this book a real page-turner. The characters of Gemma and Pan are well drawn and contrasted and the minor characters also stand out as real people. The story isn't all froth and bubble though, Silvia Forrester has done her research into estate agency, the beauty business and the intricacies of finance impeccably, so that the story rings true from beginning to end. I couldn't wait to find out what fate awaited Gemma and Pan - and I wasn't disappointed
Two very different young woman - their lives interwoven throughout the story. The characters were easy to like. I was a little disappointed in part at the ending but an easy enjoyable read.
A beautiful romantic comedy about two very different women looking for love. Both leading very different life’s.swept away with Gemma and Pans lives. An easy read
Enjoyable. You can truly relate to women trying to find their ways. They show us how to navigate new love and friendship. It’s a fun summer read, one that you will talk to your friends about .
